Google changes Safe Search in the US

Those aren't categories, they're just suggested search terms. Similar in effect, though.

Yeah, I initially thought they might be categories, but trying it a bit more I realized they're just related and suggested searches. Some of the suggestions that come up from different searches are pretty funny.

This change actually doesn’t prevent anyone from getting to the content they want to see. So, if you search for explicit content, you’ll be able to find it -- just make sure your query reflects this intent, and Google will show the most relevant content for the search.
That's some grade A bullshit. What pictures are more relevant when searching for porn models? Not the family-friendly ones that you get with the new change.

Edit: It doesn't seem that difficult to bypass the filter using additional keywords, but it's backwards logic for a search engine to do this.

Yep. Searching for a cam model name, one that's not generic in any sense, reveals no explicit images now. Using the UK site w/ safesearch off produces what I used to get.

Fuck you and your censorship google.

Almost as annoying as Google removing the option to search by specific image height/width (or at least I can't find it anymore).

It's like they are trying to make their image search more and more useless by the week.

Yeah they did take that out. super annoying, im guessing it was little usage and they thought it wasnt worth it to maintain :(

I used to use it all the time.

I still wonder if this is an official change or something accidental.

Google's Statement:
"We are not censoring any adult content, and want to show users exactly what they are looking for -- but we aim not to show sexually-explicit results unless a user is specifically searching for them. We use algorithms to select the most relevant results for a given query. If you're looking for adult content, you can find it without having to change the default setting -- you just may need to be more explicit in your query if your search terms are potentially ambiguous. The image search settings now work the same way as in Web search."

Hey Google, don't make porn harder to access. It's the most surefire way to piss people off, me included!

I'm getting my pitchfork ready as we speak.

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal for me about censoring image search since I don't use it much anyway, but this is probably the last straw for me until Google can prove that they're not going to continue to increase their efforts to sanitize their search algorithms for arbitrary behind-the-scenes reasons. This is hardly the first time that they have done funny business with altering search results and rankings, so this just added to that.

For now, I guess I'll go take my searches to Bing... but the whole set of web crawling, indexing, and search algorithms should be open sourced, not controlled by closed entities.

Yeah, people discovered that searching for a particular image pixel size got them results that were primarily Eastern European child models. I think it had something to do with that.

First, no need to use Google for porn, that's why Bing exists...

Second, doing a GIS for "blowjob" right now is hilariously sad. This is Blockbuster levels of filtering.

this is with their current version of 'safesearch off'

and the same with 'safesearch on'

What blows my mind about this image is not that the results aren't porn. It's that the results are entirely demotivators and rage comics. Every day the Internet finds new ways to become more shitty.

Bing is King. Go ahead. Try it out. http://bing.com

This. I may not use google for porn, but I use it for "research", and they block so much stuff that bing doesn't. Bing might become the new image search king.

edit:
bahahahah, I just did a bing plugin search for "bamboo fun pen nib change" and the results page is identical to the google results page, except for the understated bing icon in the upper left where the size reduced google icon would normally be. Same color scheme and adspace and everything.

Bing is trying to take that inside corner.

now they just have to make a viral set of ads starring James De Franco doing quirky searches, highlighting the bing sound effect. And we have an engine war on our hands.

i do not get those results.

and NO i'm not posting the results as they a NSFNG or most other public forums.

This is awful. I tried searching on Google with a site search (not sure I can say the name of the site) and the name of a model, and there were no results. Bing works just fine though. Google, you just lost ALL my porn searches.

Maybe it's a good thing. I remember taking an Astronomy class back in the day and we were doing research projects. I did a search for black holes and let's say that it was not the type of celestial bodies that I was hoping to research.

Of course, I use bing nowadays for porn. That is something that MS definitely got right.

Things seem fine on my end. Though I have to be a bit more blatant in my words now to find dirtier images of some talent.

Gonna jerk off for a living.

:lol

Moderate Safe Search is on (by default? I don't remember configuring that), and I'll get porn once in a while when I'm searching for video game stuff. Stuff that isn't porn. So weird, because it'll be totally unrelated to what I'm looking for.

Searches for "Girl with huge melons"

I wasn't asking for fruit!
