GTA is a PC franchise. RDR isn't. GTA will sell good on PC. RDR probably wouldn't. You can't make assumptions about GTA games based on other franchises.

Massive install base and a massive success for Rockstar. They could not have seen those kind of numbers on PS4/XBO, just impossible.

Yeah. Them releasing it on new consoles is actually kinda unexpected because the sales here will probably be small compared to the prev gen versions. Probably has something to do with new consoles being close to PC in architecture and R* using the old game to understand their hardware.

And you can't make assumptions based on the lack of a pre-existing presence. Alan Wake PC made back its entire budget within two days and it wasn't a "PC franchise". Mortal Kombat 9 exceeded expectations and it's even less of a "PC franchise" than what's essentially a third-person shooter. The idea that RDR would do well on PC has more data to back it up than the opposite, and it certainly doesn't hurt that beginning with Redemption the series is practically GTA in the Wild West (meaning it'd hold at least some appeal to the GTA fanbase on the PC).

RDR would probably go the LA Noire route on PC which isn't bad but not good enough to warrant a port of a badly documented code.

There is no evidence outside of Redemption's absence that supports the "badly-documented code" rumour, and I don't believe it holds up under scrutiny:

"Not viable" doesn't really mean anything when it lacks qualification. Many seem to flock to the butchered code rumour whenever RDR pops up, but it's always been incredibly dubious in my eyes since RAGE was developed specifically to facilitate "next-gen" PS360/PC development. The notion that R* had to throw the baby out with the bathwater and stitch together some sort of frankenstenien solution for RDR simply doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and even if it were true it doesn't mean a PC port "isn't viable", anyway -- GTA4 PC was, to begin with, little more than a dump of the X360 version, being completely unplayable on anything that less than a tri-core CPU (it's still a prime example of a sloppy PC port, but it's slightly better now than it was).

Naturally this raises the question of "Well then, why isn't the game on PC?", and I threw my 2c into this as well:

I think, due to the rather modest success of the console-exclusive Revolver (920k LTD in the US, but that's across six years), a PC port wasn't planned at all initially and the immense success of the game caught Take-Two off-guard; with Redemption being followed by LA Noire (somewhat), Max Payne 3 and GTAV, there was no room to slot in a PC port amongst the work that the various R* studios were already doing, so it was put on the backburner.

I think that there is a chance that PC may get RDR as a byproduct of an XBO/PS4 "remaster". But it is more likely that RDR2 will be PS4/XBO/PC instead of this. Doing a PC only port of original so long after the console release isn't financially viable.

You're grasping at straws here. People didn't buy Alan Wake in droves because of an affinity due to Remedy's multiplatform, PC-inclusive heritage. You could instead make the argument that, yes, Remedy was well-known among PC gamers and so naturally they'd anticipate its next release, but again this can also be applied to R*. The idea that RDR wouldn't sell well on PC because Red Dead isn't already on the PC simply doesn't make sense.

It was a PC game in 2005 when it was used to demo Intel's upcoming Core2Quad CPU. It was a multiplatform game when a trailer hit in late 2008. It became an exclusive in early 2010. Yeah, I hope people aren't getting their hopes up. I'm betting on 1080p/30fps for PS4 and 720/30fps on XB1. I'd say there's a possibility of 900p on XB1, but definitely not 1080p... I'm going with 720p simply because an open-world game is really intensive, so it may take a bigger hit on XB1 than linear, smaller games. There are enough graphical upgrades that I don't see this being 60fps on consoles. Fine be me... I'm just as happy with a steady 30 as I am with 60. Just don't drop below 30fps.

Anyway, I'm reeeeaaaally getting tired of waiting until Fall for 90% of the games worth buying every year.

I'm so stoked this is coming to PS4 that i'm not in rage mode over a Fall release, I just think this game could really take advantage of a Summer release slot. August would be a nice month for it... close enough to the holidays to still get some nice sales in late November and through December, but also technically in Summer before school/university/college starts for most gamers.
