Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

We are in the 6th year of the generation and typically console cycles last 7 years. Base consoles are starting to feel dated already. RE9 doesnt even feature ray tracing on base consoles and runs at 1080p using FSR1. They didnt even have enough processing power left for FSR2. Games will only become more and more expensive to run in the next couple of years. No harm in releasing a next gen console that will effectively act like a mid gen refresh anyway. Let's face it, we will be getting cross gen PS5 games until 2031-2032 at the latest. A lot of games that started development in 2023-2025 will not come out for another 5 years and they will be designed on the PS5 era hardware.

I think there is a good chance they delay both the PS6 and next Xbox by a year or two. Unless of course they have already signed the RAM, SSD and GPU/CPU silicon contracts. SSD and RAM prices have doubled and APUs are not getting any cheaper as they shrink. But both companies have to keep pumping out new products so they might just pass on the costs to the consumer and hope we pay $700-1000 for path tracing.
I hear you, but for some reason I still feel like we didn't get the most out of these consoles and this gen in general, like I feel there is still some juice left in these consoles to tap into. But it is not just that, I feel like the gen hasn't truly run its course yet, I dunno how to explain it. Usually when they announce new consoles I say "yeah okay it's right on cue, we need a new gen of consoles" but this time I don't say that. I have not been totally fulfilled yet.

Whats funny is that its Xbox in name only. it will effectively be a PC in a closed box running windows and play the PC version of Xbox games. There will be no xbox SKUs going forward.
Which begs the question, are Sony gonna stop releasing their games on PC now? Also, will mods be allowed on this console ala PC?

Ok gonna reply to myself I think Sony are ditching PC/Steam ports now.

I agree. Feels like we haven't had the big hitters this gen yet. Most games still being released feel like they could've been PS4 games (and most started as PS4 games).

The PS5 has yet to really shine. I feel like I haven't seen this thing really struggle yet. To your point it doesn't feel like it's time for a new generation.

Because most games have been cross gen, and Sonys first party have been graphically underwhelming compared to how high they punched above their weight with PS4.

Really? There are games running in 720p or below. RT performance in abysmal, no ML hardware support. PS5 is only really good at rendering last gen games in 60fps, this is a sad reality. You can of course make games 30fps with increased fidelity but there is so much you can do without using RT (that performs badly on base consoles).

you feel that way because its been an extremely underwhelming gen. all the big players have been MIA this gen. It feels like a gen that never got going.

And yes, Sony will no longer be porting their SP games to PC. Jason confirmed that yesterday. Most likely because the next xbox is a PC and releasing Intergallactic on xbox would be counterintuitive.

What.... That thing has almost struggled since day one the moment it had to play anything but upscaled ps4 Games. Every slightly more advanced game is running at pitiful internal resolutions with features either cut out completely or scaled down to next to nothing.....
Seriously what....

My only semi-serious question after this is whether the next Rockstar Games' game will come out on PC day 1 or if Playstation will become the de facto timed exclusive system for their games.
Rockstar knows many of us will double dip, hell sizeable chunk of playerbase gonna tripple dip too, so ofc ps5/series versiongonna have at least full year of breathing room, likely ps6 version late 2027 or sometime in 2028, then half a year later pc version, it makes sense simply coz of the money.

Yeah, I haven't beaten one game this gen not even one no cap. Count with me, I havent yet played: gow ragnarok, spiderman 2, Horizon FW, Yotei, DS2, Ass Creed and this is just off the top of my head.

Underwhelming gen! If you told me that this gen was gonna be this underwhelming when I was playing The Matrix demo I woulda called you crazy.

Not talking about GTA VI, talking about Red Dead 3/GTA 7/Whichever else next gen game they launch.

It's funny. The console has been 'struggling' since day one.

- No RT in performance mode of Spiderman Miles.
- RT shadows were cut from Demon Souls at launch despite being advertised on reveal.
- Cyberpunk shipped with just RT shadows while PC shipped with RT reflections and RTGI, and RT Sun shadows.
- No RT in performance modes of several third party games like Guardians of the Galaxy, Callisto, Hogwrats and Watch Dogs.
- 1080p sub 60 fps in performance modes of games like Guardians of the Galaxy.
- 1080p 60 fps in first party games like Returnal.
- Sub 60 fps in GOTY winners Elden Rings and Baldurs Gate.

All this before next gen games finally started showing up in mid 2023 and we all know what happened after that:

- Sub 720p 60 fps in Star Wars Jedi Survivor.
- 720p 60 fps in FF16
- No 60 fps at launch in Starfield
- 720p sub 60 fps in Avatar and Alan Wake 2

The generation started off really poorly but console gamers were just happy to finally play games at 60 fps and higher resolutions and ignored all of the bad stuff. They then found a scapegoat in UE5 and blamed all the mid gen problems on UE5 instead of realizing these consoles were very weak to really push next gen graphics.

The fact that current graphics kings AC Shadows are Re9 are running at just 1080p in their 60 fps modes, and dont even feature ray tracing should show everyone that its time to move on.

why not? you are a thread regular. We have had some stunning games this gen. It took a while to kick off but i think things turned around mid 2023. Why skip so many games?

The Matrix Demo fooled me as well. But it became pretty clear around 2023 that the consoles were not going to deliver that this gen. At least not in an open world. Hellblade 2 blew me away but that just made it even more obvious that Matrix was just a pipe dream despite it being fully playable. Still, id say we've had some nice contenders. The lack of Sony first party, rockstar, cd project, and rocksteady really hurt this gen.

Unless something changes Rockstar is still releasing at least 1 game per generation.
Its too hard to predict, man.
AI could make releases much more consistent which would be best case scenario, wost case would be AI somehow fumbling it and on top rockstar devteam experiencing all kinds of shit(unionisation/riots, some internal struggles etc).
Its so far away, lets see gta6 launch first and work from there :)

times have changed. RDR2 took 5 years. GTA6 has taken 8 years and lets face it, there is a good chance, it will get delayed again.

If they do start development on RDR3 or GTA7 in 2026, we are looking at 2034 at best. By that time, we might be talking about the PS7 lol And thats the best case scenario, their next game might take even longer seeing as how they want to take their time animating people eating food, nailing fences, voicing every single NPC, animating motorboating strippers, masseuse happy endings, and semen fluid simulations.

Rockstar has gone full retard and its best just to let them do whatever the fuck they want and pretend they dont exist. They are like that absentee father that shows up once every ten years on birthdays, buys you a dozen presents, and then disappears for another ten years.

Infinite money allows you to do infinite money things sure, including developing a single videogame for more than a decade without a worry but I still find it hard to believe they'll take more than 10 years to release their next one.
And I also find it hard to believe we'll have a PS7 by 2034 as things stand. We'll see.

Loved your analogy though :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I think its insane that both Sony and MS are going ahead with their next gen consoles in this economy, with these shortages, and these RAM and SSD prices. But here we are. Either they know something we dont or they dont have a choice and those contracts are locked in and they have to release a console every 7-8 years.

Oh nothing against the games themselves I actually have most of them lying at home, it's just life man, became a dad almost a couple years ago and that little gorgeous thing is taking up most of my time.

It's safe to say I have actually spent more time on this thread than I did playing games haaa:messenger_grinning_smiling:

Yeah The Matrix was always a pipe dream, one can dream it'll be the norm next gen!!

Congrats! yeah, kids can be draining. Good luck with the terrible twos. I actually had a great time the first year or so when they just feed, shit and sleep. Put in a 100 hours into Skyrim literally a week after my first one was born in between feeds. And played detroit non stop while taking the night shift a day after we came back from the hospital with my second. Surprisingly doable. Now, 2-5 is when they wont just leave you the fuck alone. Just gotta find the time for yourself or you will burn out. My advice? Put your gaming setup in a separate room, maybe even the bedroom and lock yourself in for an hour or two everyday. Living room gaming setups just dont work with kids. Men nowadays are way too involved with kids, and while it can be good for the kids self esteem and future confidence, they will walk right over you because they will see you more as a mother or as a friend. Trust me, ive been through it all lol

Agreed, but do you think they're locked in their contracts for several generations? I know these things are negotiated years in advance but still, negotiating hardware for a generation that's 15 years away sounds a bit insane to me. A PS7 by the late 2030s at the earliest sounds way more reasonable to me.
We'll see, I'm still wondering how in the hell they'll make a PS6 look enticing to a regular joe if the PS5 Pro still costs as much as it does currently.

Haha I know exactly what you mean man. I barely play nowadays and when I do it's mainly sports games as my little one doesn't let me play (just like her mother:messenger_grinning_smiling:) so I don't have the attention span to play single player games. Having said that, I have warmed up the wifey for GTA6, told her I won't be around much when it comes out; never knew you could do so much with one arm:messenger_winking_tongue:

I dont think ssd and ram contracts would span generations, but i know they have contracts with AMD that were signed around 2022 when intel and amd were in a bidding war for ps6, and intel lost out at the very end. So at the very least AMD owes Sony some chips and they have contracts with TSMC that span well over a console generation. Who knows how any of that is going in todays market.

like i said, i dont see any other reason why both sony and MS would jump in head first in such an uncertain market. It's good for me because i can play intergallactic and other sony first party games on a 35 tflops machine, but for them as a business? makes zero sense unless they are somehow being forced to. personally i would delay it by a year or two, so 2028 or 2029 to avoid the RAM and SSD price fiascos. I think AI will crash or at least stabilize by then, but MS execs believe AI is the future and waiting for a crash for a cheaper console makes no sense to them.

I do think AI is certainly the future just not in the way techbros think and that's why it's quite likely it will crash.
AI currently is being heavily subsidized and tokens are already expensive AF, I'll be surprised if they get any cheaper if energy won't. They're expensive enough to make outsourcing to countries like India the cheaper choice, hence the meme word "AI = Actual Indians".
That said I don't think we'll ever go back to the times when mid to high tier personal computer hardware was quite affordable.

What AI already is doing and will keep doing is changing the software development paradigm and bring a whole lot of innovation for sure. AI generated art from scratch is not my thing, I do believe a human hand should always be involved but apart from that I'm honestly interested to see how games will evolve with AI in the mix in terms of gameplay, simulation and graphical tech.
