Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Yeah, if a PS6 comes out it will be at best between a 4090 and a 5090
The very best AMD currently has is ~40% slower in raster and ~60% slower in RT than a 4090. That`s nothing you just make up for in a single gen with barely any node progress, especially not for cheap.
The PS5-PS6 jump will be either very expensive or very lackluster...or both. Sony will have FSR4 and framegen built into the next gen and we will see the same crappy PR lies we got from Nvidia with the 5xxx series.

btw, the cpu upgrade you did was actually pretty good. you shouldve seen a difference coming off of that trashy zen 2 card.

i am looking to upgrade to the 7800x3d and benchmarks show a fairly decent performance increase even at 1440p and 4k for the same GPU. a lot of RT games are CPU heavy and can hold back the GPU. Same goes for Ue5 games which are also CPU bound, at least they used to be prior to UE5.4.
there is a big difference. cyberpunk runs twice as fast

What do you mean? Wouldn't a 4090 tier PS6 make a 1500 dollars card essentially obsolete? Who's gonna pay that much when your 700-800$ PS6 gets there?
How is Sony going to be able to offer that in 2027-2028 with how silicon prices and node shrinks have developed? 700-800$ for a 4090 level card + fitting CPU + Storage + Controller + +....
They`d have to eat considerable losses on each device. If there isn`t a rather drastic change in the fab landscape in the next 2 years...get ready to be disappointed by the raw power of the next gen.

Many sony fanboys think differently, they think ps6 portable is here to stay and it's gonna be sony priority...

think for a moment dude, if sony is ok with doing crossgens, why do you think they are not ready to do cross-platforms? you think they care if forum rats think bad about them for not pushing the envelope.
Sony fanboys think death stranding 2 is the best looking game of all time. I dont really care what they have to say. they also thought sony would never port their entire lineup to PC and yet here we are.

Regardless, Sony studios dont give a fuck about pushing the envelope anymore. i was talking about third party devs like Massive, Ubisoft, Rockstar, Remedy and CD Project. Their games already run just fine on steamdeck thanks to their studios wasting the ps5 gpu rendering native 4k pixels in every single game they have made this gen. they will run even better on this handheld.

Storage, controller, cpu are all cheap. CPU wont need a big upgrade anyway.

4090 would be 4-5 years old by then. Same as the 1080 Ti which the PS5 was able to match in raw performance, plus ray tracing features which the 1080 ti lacked.

The UDNA architecture will need to be 50% more efficient per CU for them to be able to hit 4090 performance. The 3nm chip should already double the performance for the same chip size. That's 3x the performance already. 4090 is roughly 3.5-4x more powerful than the PS5. The higher clocks will let help them close that gap even further. If the IPC gains are mid like in the 25% range, then expect 3x better performance which should put it somewhere between a 4080 and 4090.

Remember it will have AI upscaling, and way better ray tracing performance on par with nvidia's. 9070xt is already up there with the 4080 which is only 6% more powerful than a 4080. And thats on 4nm RDNA still.

No dude, those were very very different times. Moores Law wasn`t completely dead back then and 35k Wafers literally weren`t even in people's nightmares. For that reason neither is the 1080ti situation in any way comparable to what hardware manufacturers have and will have to deal with from now on nor are components like CPUs cheap by any means, unless you want to completely forego further developments and aim for another PS4 situation.

Looking at AMDs PC parts.....nope. The necessary gains within a single generation are in the 40/60 (raster/RT) range to close the gap to the 4090 from AMDs current best 800€ part. That pretty much exceeds every best case scenario

I'm running a 9800x3d and 9070XT and am maxing out cyberpunk with psycho RT at 1440p fsr4 90+ FPS in dogtown.

You can stack the die on the APU and squeeze out even better performance
Triple the TOPS and split 2/3 on PSSR2
1/3 on Custom Sony Framegen

And you can beat a 5090 now.

Pretty much, something close to 9070XT but on next gen architecture will be powering PS6.

The difference in capacity between a portable and a ps6 is gonna be super huge, you have to fundamentaly make 2 completely different version of your game if you are actually an ambitious dev that wanna push the machine to 110%.

So the solutions are 2, they are gonna make way less ambitious games that can run with only lower graphical settings on a portable but without any leap forward in physics, destruction, ai, npcs\enemies on screen at the same time.

Or they are gonna waste a shitload of money making 2 completely different version of every game they wanna port on ps6 portable.

One solution sound horrible for us, the other seems impossible for greedy ass sony\third parties, maybe third parties are gonna ignore the portable, but not fucking sony since it's their machine and they have to support it.

The "best" option would be for third parties and sony to make apposite, different games for the portable that are not mixed with the ps6 games, but even that would translate in dev studios wasting menpower and money in portable games instead of dedicating all their efforto for big boy games.
Every aspect of this shit is nightmerish.

P.s. you have no idea what the dev downgraded in their games to make it run on series s, you only see the final product, not what they cut during development so you have absolutely no way to say if a dev is limiting themselves.
My hope is it's not functionally a PS6 Portable but a PS5+PS4 Portable (fingers-crossed for PS1/2/P/Vita too) and that they're using a heavily cut down PS6 UDNA/Zen6(?) chip instead of an RDNA2/Zen2 chip not to play PS6-only titles, but so they can utilise the hardware-level back compat inherent to it and leverage its far greater efficiency to run PS5 & PS4 games at a much lower clock with lower thermals/power requirements than they otherwise would using a simple, shrunken PS5 chip.

They can also go heavy on cache (particular L3/Infinity Cache) and apply an additional layer of aggressive memory compression/decompression to get a much higher effective bandwidth out of slower LPDDR and/or a smaller bus.

He's right tho. Sony is going to want to maximize profits, as will the companies that make games for them - and if the handheld does well they will focus on bringing everything to that - will be similar to series s

switch sold a gazillion units. no one gave a shit. switch 2 is the fastest selling console of all time. no one gives a shit.

sony first party, maybe. they have turned into lazy hacks with no standards. real devs with ambition would never design games around a 4 tflops handheld in 2030. especially when they didnt design their games around a 4 tflops series s in 2020 when ps5 and xsx were literally out of stock for 2 years.

From 2027-2030, PS6 will basically be getting ue5 games designed around hardware ray tracing at 800p 60 fps on base ps5 which should run at 1440p 60 fps reconstructed to 4k using PSSR on the PS6. or with path tracing at 30 fps. By then, the ps6 should have sold 50-60 million units to maybe 10 million ps portable units and most developers would switch to ps6 only.

I don't mind a PS6 if its slightly above PS5 Pro. Just depends on the launch catalogue. PS will have to come out guns blazing for me to consider getting back to the platform. No remakes , no remasters, no GAAS. Give me fresh new IP that's taking full advantage of the hardware set.

Completely with you. I feel burned on the PS5 "pro" needing a stand and a disk drive separately only to show up every year with various remastered games from the last decade.

If there isn't a solid 2 year slate of games on the radar I'll be waiting.

Though, who am I kidding,

I see Phys!nt being a ps6 launch title and doing some next gen-Kojima shit and it's over

we did this last gen as well. we looked at what AMD had back in 2019 and figured thats the best PS5 could do. I remember Alex using the 5700xt's specs to suggest that ps5 cant have RT. And a lot of folks here dismissed 2.0 ghz clocks as unrealistic on a console. sony shot well past that. and used rnda 2 gpus that werent even out by the time the ps5 came out.

i think a lot can change between now and 2027-2028. we will see what happens, but i wouldnt look at whats available on the market from AMD today.

5700XT and PS5 GPU are very close in power (6700 is actually a bit more powerful than PS5).

You're more optimistic than me, if the ps portable outsells the ps6 that's when I think we'd have problems but yeah

I do lol. It should be at least as powerful as a pc with a 4090 imo

Yeah but it didn't have RT and was maxing out at 1.7 ghz . People in the next Gen hardware speculation thread used that to dismiss the leaks that had the gonzalo chip at 1.8 ghz and the Oberon chip at 2.0 ghz. Cerny shot past both of them to deliver 2.23 ghz that has traded blows with a 1.8 ghz 12 tflops xsx gpu all gen thanks to its higher clocks. All the While offering rt.

Whatever bottleneck amd is hitting into today won't be an issue next Gen. cerny has confirmed an AI partnership with AMD which might help them get more out of fewer tflops and smaller chips to get around expensive tsmc pricing.

Even though inclusion of RT hardware etc came as a surprise last gen`s expectations concerning the silicon`s raw capabilities became mostly reality. And that was when we still had a good fab progress cadence.

We´ll get about half a classic node shrink step from RDNA4 to RDNA5/UDNA and another 30+% higher wafer prices at the same time. Closing the 40/60% performance gap to a 4090`s raw power within that one generation would be a leap we haven`t seen since back when Moore`s Law was still in full effect, and then we`d probably still be talking about a ~300+W die with at least a 700+$ price sticker just for the GPU.
Let`s just say I admire your optimism :messenger_grinning_sweat:

As I see it there are limits to how expensive you can make a console and still expect it to sell and I don´t see Sony eating huge losses on each console ever again.
My bet would be that we´ll get something around 9700-9700xt raw performance coupled with a zen 5 (maybe even x3d) and a lot of ML upscaling/framegen and whatever else they can come up with. Maybe we´ll get ML features like what we`ve seen from Nvidia`s Blackwell AI suite custom-hardware accelerated. As standard features things like that could maybe make a difference..but that is to be seen.

Finally found a ue5 game where the stutter is really egregious and make the game almost unplayable at times.

(Dune awakening)
UE5.4 and actually UE5.3 added automatic shader gathering and compilation so devs dont even have to do anything. They just have to upgrade to the versions that are now officially 3 versions behind the latest one.

Stuttering should never happen anymore. Expedition 33 devs with a total of 4 graphics programmers were able to upgrade to that version last year, and there are virtually no stutters in that game. And it's a huge open world too.

maybe 4090 is too optimistic then. 4080 should be doable though. thats only 2.5x more powerful in terms of raw power and 3.5x in ray tracing.

i was just excited to see kepler mention 3nm and more importantly the IPC gains per CU. we havent gotten one since AMD moved from Polaris to RDNA1. that was 6 years ago.

This is coming tomorrow.

Doesnt look like a big upgrade like Indy. Big misfire from ID software. Or maybe thats just the cost of 60 fps at higher resolutions this gen.

Looking forward to testing it out, RT maxed out looks very mediocre in the current build. Indy looked a lot better with the PT mode, but still quite inconsistent in a lot of areas. Doom seems to have some mediocre assets and similar issues which PT won't be able to fix.

Agreed.
I fired up Indiana Jones on my 5080 yesterday, put FULL RT on and was seriously underwhelmed. IdTech 8`s PT still can`t hold a candle to CP2077`s implementation.
Just like their RTGI it`s just too far scaled down with no option to scale it up.

This almost looks like the difference between software and hardware lumen. Their RTGI coverage is just way too low to be even considered RTGI. Shouldve probably used software based techniques like Software Lumen, Starfield's realtime GI and the Crytek's realtime GI we saw in KCD2. It's much more performant, and they couldve probably used the rest of the GPU on better asset quality/materials.

The game is massive and i understand why they went with RTGI to save time, but software based realtime GI wouldve done the same.

Interesting! They've also shown AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor with an Xbox logo inside the render images in the video…

I am surprised they are even bothering with a next gen xbox. Dont expect much from this. MS has effectively become a third party publisher this gen. This will probably be something windows based PC instead of an actual xbox console.

This is next gen.

New gameplay at 3:14

This looks great but I think people are maybe underestimating how much heavy lifting the fluid animations/motion blur are doing. We should be seeing this kind of shit in EVERY major release but instead we're getting enemies that barely react to weapons or environment which totally breaks immersion.

Yeah, if they're partnering with third parties to put out official Xbox handhelds then my money is on them basically releasing a modular PC box for the next console. They can even sell co-branded upgrades every time there's a new advancement in PC graphics. Imagine being able upgrade your console's graphics card on a whim. Sounds annoying but I think they could print money off the accessory sales alone.

You'll take your PS6 The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered Remake and you'll bloody like it.

Is it normal that i can't max out control at 4k60 on my 4080?

Is a 2019 game still this fucking heavy? It doesn't even look that good anymore...

But on this one rtx is unfortunately super noticeable so i have to keep it turned on.

It's quite an early RTX implementation so doesn't have new optimisations like ray reconstruction , mega geometry etc so it's just not as efficient as new games. Running it natively at 4k is just going to be very heavy regardless, even with the new optimisations.

Kinda absurd that i can't max out a 2019 game with a 1100 euros gpu...

Does anyone remember what are the heaviest settings so i can play a bit and find a balance?

The game has dlss but i can't chose the quality of it and if i put in 4k it tells me that i'm using dlaa...how the hell do i only use dlss quality without dlaa?

Maybe you can override it in the nvidia app or that dlss override tool.

it lets you pick the internal resolution. 2560*1440 is the internal resolution you should be choosing as the internal resolution.

i ran this at 864p on my 2080 back when it came out. It has like five RT effects so it was always very expensive. I vaguely recall running this at 4k dlss quality (1440p) 60 fps on my 3080. so you should be able to run it fine as soon as you figure out the issue with DLSS.

DLAA is basically rendering at over 100% the resolution iirc so you are rendering more than 8.2 million pixels and then downsampling to 4k. its very expensive for any game with RT.
