Grasshopper Manufacture remaking The Silver Case for PC in Unity 5

Man, I'm so excited, and that other logo looks so slick, as well! Autumn can't come soon enough~~!

I'm definitely getting in on this. I wonder what the odds are for getting Flower, Sun and Rain remade, too? Maybe I should just get the DS version.

Wow, that was fast. Pleasantly surprised that its getting such a fast turn around. The new screens look great. I hope they can maintain that level of quality all the way through.

Have any of the existing graphics, such as the live action clips, posed a problem?

great to have it announced officially, that modern logo looks pretty nice.

It's interesting that they're going the full Remaster route, the first screenshot looks like they're putting in quite a bit of work.

Hmmmmmm.

That screenshot of the UI has gone from cool, unique style to that kinda low-budgety kinda UI seen in a lot of games before.

I'm a bit worried now that they'll end up changing TOO much for this game. I know it's still in dev but I hope it doesn't end up like a New n' Tasty scenario.

There’s a long interview up on Famitsu, I only skimmed it and can’t translate the whole thing right now. Two rough summaries of the most interesting bits I read:

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201605/06105241.html

They are using Unity as the engine so ports to other platforms are possible. They are also considering a PC Remaster for the phone game “Silver Case: The 25th Ward”. Both those plans depend on the reception of the Silver Case PC Remaster.

The Remaster will have 1080p/16:9 support. Since the PS1 version ran at 480p/4:3 they have to update the UI. But their goal is to keep the layout as close to the original as possible, which is a challenge.

M. Bison_Yes, yeeeees.jpg

Exactly what I wanted to hear, all of it. Guessing they are keeping the same music also from Masafumi Takada?

As far as I can tell, there's nothing mentioned in the interview about updating the soundtrack or who's doing the music for the Remaster. I think they would have mentioned it if they were making big changes.

Fall is so far off... but it might be a nice time to play it. I think I'm going to pick up a used copy of Flower, Sun, Rain and try to play it.

That is a loooong interview. Would love to read the whole thing.

The UI(lower right) looks identical. But all the backgrounds are rendered in 3D in the original. And I'm pretty sure those will be 2D now.
I'm not sure where you're getting that from?

And I'd be surprised if the hud looked like it did on the PS1, especially if it's going to have any mouse controls. Though I don't get why the game screenshot clearly isn't from the same part of the game as the WIP hud is for.

The one of the police building is from the same segment. The other one... that could be anything. As for the 2D, the newer one doesn't seem like it'll work in full 3D like the original HQ... Could be wrong, though.

It's coming in the fall? Yessss. I'm also assuming that this can run on low powered machine because I have to get a laptop for college and it won't be a gaming laptop

Oh man. A REAL Suda game in 2016. I must be dreaming.

Fuck everything else coming out this year. This is the real megaton.

I think it's hilarious that Suda keeps claiming the game has 'no blood', when you're on the trail of a psychopathic mass murderer.

It's still fairly tame, but there is definitely some very unnerving imagery in the game. Way worse than anything in FSR.

So where's those updates? ;)

Haha figured I'd get called out for taking so long to come back. Sorry about that. Was on vacation in the Nagano countryside for Golden Week. Wasn't doing much internet out there ><

I already see some of y'all's questions in here about stuff like ports, controls, what remaster means for graphics/UI. Let me confirm when I get back to work tomorrow what I'm allowed to say and I'll try to answer some stuff. If you have something specific feel free to ask, but I can't promise I'll be able to address it. Annnd in the meantime I need sleep because I played far too much Overwatch tonight.

Since no one bit...

Do you foresee anything in the game being controversial? Are all the rights issues clear, I.E. the music, live action content, and such?

Also, in the Art of GHM, Suda mentioned that the Parade case's art was being redrawn for the DS re-release.

(^Original Version)

The new art shown in the book looks cool, but so does the original; what will you pick from in cases like that?

Is an old version/new version swap button a possibility (like with Halo or Monkey Islands remasters)?

Any possibility of a limited physical edition?

Will Moonlight/Twilight Syndrome be considered if the game does well? Though I guess those would be after a FSR remaster.

That's not happening, Suda doesn't own the rights to those. Thankfully TSC and FSR are all him. Killer7, not so much, but why improve on the perfect GC version anyway. FSR still deserves a perfect version, though.

I'm mostly sure I can answer this without waiting till tomorrow to confirm with the development team, but please do keep in mind that my job is developer relations / production and I'm not directly involved with the remaster the dev team is making.

The plan has been to go with one new version. The old assets are very low resolution, especially including the 2d assets that make up the UI and other elements that pop up on screen. They had to be remade to display well at all. Having a swap feature would mean remaking all the old assets at a higher resolution in addition in the exact style of the old version which is a lot of extra work on top of an already very serious project. I feel your pain that it would be nice to get the original experience. I feel that to the degree that I play on Japanese PS disc on a 1st gen PS3 to get something as close as possible without buying more hardware that won't fit in my tiny apartment. But this is an aspect of the original game that created the need to remaster the game. I can pass on the sentiment, however.

Limited physical run >> sure, that's a possibility, but I can't promise anything either.

>>Do you foresee anything in the game being controversial? Are all the rights issues clear, I.E. the music, live action content, and such?

To my knowledge there were no issues with asset rights. Japanese companies are incredibly risk averse so there's no chance anyone would move forward on a project like this without either a) there being no problem with the rights or b) there being another plan in place. I'm sure you'd be concerned about "another plan" meaning assets that are not original or at least faithful, but afaik there haven't been any problems like that.

Gonna have to check on the original vs. DS art thing. I think I could answer rightly, but I'd rather check just to be sure.

And as a general reply to whether the loc team is up to the task of localizing the game, yep absolutely. The guy heading up the project has an incredible grasp on both languages, on the subject matter and on writing generally. Team's been systematic which is clutch for a project of this size, but also flexible which is clutch in maintaining the nuanced feel of the context-heavy story-telling. I'm very confident it will be excellent.

Appreciate all the info. Awesome to know about the project lead, too. I'm confident it'll be excellent as well.

This is very interesting to hear! Thank you for sharing so much. Can't wait for the game!

May I ask, does that mean the live-action content of the game is going to be remade, as well?

Hm, I figured the new assets would be remade in the style of the old assets anyway. I'm hoping for something that's as faithful to the original as possible simply because I likely won't ever be able to experience the original. But I understand we might not be the primary audience for this remake, I'm sure there's plenty of interest in Japan alone.

The amount of coverage that this has gotten from the western media is astonishing. And Japan's going nuts, naturally.

I can't fathom they'd redo the live action stuff, especially with Suda having put so much work into it and having hired a real editor to cut it.
