Saw it last night, loved every single minute of it except the
woof woof i'm a dog
part, Jesus that was horrible.

Saw the movie before Noon earlier today. Was really good! I'm typically not into big suspense like this, but really enjoy it. Love me some Sandra Bullock.

Mind-blowned by anyone criticizing this movie on the basis that it requires "more depth."

:\

Anyways,

What a beautiful, beautiful movie.
The ISS destruction scene
, in particular, was incredibly impressive. And this is me watching on 2D. I am gonna watch it again in 3D.

Yep, like everyone else in this thread, I'm sure. You need to see this in 3D!

It's funny too, since I typically hate it, but it was just made for this film.

I too thought the 3D worked incredibly well. An astronaut drifing in space against a backdrop of stars, it was beautiful. The 3D really added a lot.

especially considering how the camera kept doing shots focused on her legs, or aimed over her butt.

eh I think you're reaching a bit here.

There's a panning full body shot when she stands up on Earth, a shot of her torso and crotch is perfectly understandable in this context.
Then there's a shot from the back where you can just see the very top of her underwear. In my mind that's very tasteful as they could have very easily gone lower if eye candy really was their prerogative.
Any shots of her legs in amongst this scene are contextual as obviously she's slowly trying to walk again and triumphantly standing up on Earth. These shots are hardly eye candy.

Anyway I think even if there are shots that could be considered eye candy, they're incidental and it's more a reflection of Western prudishness to point it out when there's really nothing there.

Probably seeing this sometime this week, from what you guys are saying it sounds like 3D is the way to go but I'm still not totally sure. How's it compare to Hugo? That's the last movie I saw where the 3D really impressed me (I'm sure there have been other great ones since, just haven't seen them).

I saw this yesterday.

It was absolutely incredible. The score was perfect.

Although there were some inconsistencies with minor details within realistic boundaries.
Overall, it was money well spent for me and I would go see it again.

I saw it in IMAX and it was beautiful. There wasn't a shit ton of 3D effects but I was grateful for that considering how I don't enjoy 3D anything.

3D is much more important to the experience here than in Hugo.

^Quarter to Three is awesome, look forward to hearing that.

Does it all have to be 1:1 real? A lot of suspension of disbelief was required for this film, that's fine

Besides the way she was dressed brought back images of Ripley in the alien movies more than anything else. Maybe it was for eye candy but I felt like it was an alien homage

Alien

And Barbarella actually.

Saw it in IMAX 3D. First time going to an IMAX in 10 years and only my second experience with 3D (my first and only up until now being Toy Story 3).

Great film. My fiancee and I both really enjoyed it. Really tense moments that genuinely make you question what will happen next. I could go on and on about this film; it's very simple in what it sets out to do, but it does it so damn well that it doesn't need the complexities found in other films to be captivating.

Sandra Bullock, by the way, is really hot. I mean, not just "hot for almost being 50" but hot as in "wow she's hot."

I can't imaging a better use for 3d in a movie. The move is in space. It is shot alot in first person perspective. You don't know which way is up or down so the sense of depth from the 3d really helps. Stuff is floating about. It is amazing.

Mind F'ing Blown

This is why I go to the movies.
Best 3D movie I have ever seen
Best Space movie I have ever seen

My head is still spinning

if these kinds of movies don't save the cinema nothing will

Saw it yesterday and loved it. Glad that
Both of my favorite 2013 movies ended in a similar way.

Saw this with my daughter in 3D yesterday and enjoyed it very much. I'm not fond of 3D movies as a whole and they frequently give me a headache but this one just worked beautifully. It's a gorgeous film, and I thought the scripting and acting was good but I never really swallowed a lot of the main character's actions/reactions.
(I don't believe anyone with the self-discipline and intelligence to wind up a mission specialist would be subject to panic, or delude themselves about their odds in the face of almost certain death. Nor do I think she presented well as a parent who's lost a child.)
Not my film of the year, but a better than average Hollywood effort for sure, and the visuals are magnificent.

Was I the only person getting some Dead Space vibes from this movie? I mean obviously there are parallels.

Shit goes wrong. You have to go from place to place fixing stuff. Hallucinations.

I thought the same thing! I never really saw her that way before. I always thought she was kind of average. But then the scene where she disrobes, I said DAAAAAMN! Great body.

Really wanna watch this. Had to close my eyes and ears when the trailer came before Prisoners. Sucks that I have to wait until November in the UK :(

Has anybody seen this a second time? is it worth it?

I am still pissed that when I bought the tickets for the first viewing, I thought I was getting the IMAX version, but mine was just a regular 3D showing. I wanted to be more blown away the first time, but I think I might bite and watch it again in real IMAX.

Anybody seen it a second time?

Ugh. This is why I hate any view from deGrasse

I don't see the harm really. He points out stuff which is true, and whether it does or does not detract from your enjoyment of the movie really depends on the individual. It's kinda funny when people get mad at nitpicks on something they like. :p

I know but its nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking and like one tweet is ok but a stream of tweets over minute stuff really is irritating over something who enjoyed it for entertainment

Yeah, I find the Tyson stuff to just be some fun tidbits I otherwise wouldn't have thought of. And it doesn't harm the film for me at all.

Also, I saw it twice and it was just as great of an experience the 2nd time. Looking forward to a third.

I haven't seen the video, but considering he has access to tons of footage, I'm betting they asked him to do it.

Edit: DISREGARD ABOVE. I am a butt

Probably gonna see this at Movie Tavern tonight. The 4th time, and the definitive one :p

I've thought she was gorgeous ever since she was that "Wildcat behind the wheel." The Net is fantastic with her in it as well.

I normally dislike 3D but it's just so, so good for this film.

Saw it this morning for the second time, it was still GLORIOUS! Definitely my favourite movie of the year.

It stays in IMAX 3D for 3 more weeks until Thor: The Dark World, so plenty of opportunities to view it again. Maybe 2 or 3 more times.

So I just saw this on a brand new (opened this summer) ginormous 4K projection Cinemark XD screen with RealD. Would I gain anything at all by going to see this in IMAX 3D? I didn't feel like I could be missing anything in terms of resolution and brightness.

Most amazing part is the 3d was converted.

Clearly the movie was conceptualized and designed with 3d on mind, but yeah the quality was phenomenal for a conversion effort.

The Soyuz/capsule/station shots were VERY obviously post-converted, distractingly so at times. That said, the 3D in the exteriors were HOLY FUCK, though of course it was CGI with faces pasted inside the helmets.

Did you watch it in Atmos? If not, I would say it's probably worth looking around to see if there's a screen with Dolby Atmos rather than double dipping on IMAX 3D. The sound is amazing.

Yep, I saw it for the second time last night. It was better than the first time for me. Not as many surprises on the second viewing as I knew what was coming up after scene, but that also allowed me to "take it in" better too. When I get this home on blu-ray I'm going to watch this dozens of times just to see the scenery and pay attention to the details. I noticed a few details on the second viewing that I missed the first time around, probably due to my shock during most of the film, lol.

I thought the movie was gorgeous and extremely suspenseful. I just really really disliked some of Sandra's dialog to herself. Especially towards the end. It literally pulled me out of the moment it was so jarringly corny. Otherwise it was a heck of a film.

Is there an Atmos locator somewhere? I'm striking out for information on Atmos theaters in Greater Cincinnati.

Yep, the
dog bit and the "I'm not just driving anymore" lines were my only two issues with the film
.

He shouldn't have had ranted about the film on his twitter feed though. He went through a lot of the details of the movie. I unfollowed him so that I won't be spoiled anymore.

Watched this yesterday in imax 3d. What an experience. Of course we have all seen space in movies but usually with aliens, future, or super heroes but this was something different.

Everything worked for me. The message, tension, the look, and acting. Loved it!

He was whining about some really pedantic shit. "Why do people like fictional movies?" I don't know why he's so antagonistic about something that's very clearly helping build enthusiasm for NASA and the like.

Some of it was funny. Others was just grating. And the fact that he gleefully spoils the movie... I mean, come on.

Yeah that's a dick move. Agreed. I didn't even think about that, since I've already seen the movie.

Science guy constantly whines about lack of interest in space, space movie comes out, science guy makes it all about himself and keeps whining about shit.

Probably mad at the prospect of two lifetimes of fundraisers to equate a weekend at the box office.
