Grim Fandango Remastered |OT| The Excelsior Line Edition

Hey I just found out how to do the fix for users on a secondary PS4 system. I noticed there were others with this same problem so we should post it in the OT.

How to use the PS Store fix for users on a secondary PS4 system:

Go to http://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com , Select [Deactivate All] under [Account] > [Media and Devices] for the type of content for which you want to deactivate all activated systems. Then manually activate the PS4 system you are currently using as your primary system (Select [PSN] > [Activate as Your Primary PS4] > [Activate]) and then you can download the game through the computer PSN store fix.

The important thing to note is that you are deactivating your primary PS4 system so that you can use another system as your primary account to download the game. You can only deactivate accounts using this method once every six months! However, you can deactivate the primary PS4 system manually as much as you like, so as soon as you are finished using the system or game, be sure to deactivate it manually if you want to reactivate your previous system once more as your primary system.

When does the tank control achievement start?

I walked around the first room a bit using the new controls then switched over to tank controls.

My guess is that they just have a flag in every scene tankControlUsed = 0/1

End of the game it checks you off, and if you used it everywhere then you get the cheevo. Pure speculation but that's how I'd do it.

The Unreal project is nice I guess, but it's overly sculpted.

I'm past it now, but I'd love to know where you think. :D

Seeing as how you were only 20 minutes in, I'm guessing
at the part where you need to find a way to stop up the tube system to get a lead on a good client. Using the "punched" card was pretty damn obtuse, IMO.

I had to use that hint site to figure it out.

What the hell.

Everytime I try to download the game on PS4, a notifications says I cannot download the game. No other explanations whatsoever. Just "Cannot download the game". I'm on NA PSN and it is my primary console, by the way.

Edit: Downloaded it from the website and now it works.

Well, Double Fine wants to stay closer to the original as it would be infinitely cheaper solution.

I appreciate this approach to be honest. It's the Criterion approach as opposed to so many developers who simply reimagine and retool the game (sometimes to its detriment). That said, some of the blurrier/grainier backgrounds could have used a repaint, but outside of that, I'm appreciative that Double Fine tried as hard as possible to stay true to the games original vision. Grim Fandango is a classic, this is an update for the GoG games, not for the "HD Remake" gamers that are fed by so many other companies.

Start a game, switch to tank controls, then start another new game and skip the cutscene and you'll be tank right from the beginning.

I preordered this on PS4, but haven't even booted it up due to a busy schedule and being occupied with Dying Light.

Sounds like the PS4 version is vastly superior to Vita, is that correct?

First minutes of the game and I'm already disapointed due to the ugly borders that are sincerely annoying to look at. How come it wasn't possible to make the game in 1080p?

Pre-rendered backgrounds, same as REmake.

Anyone playing this for the first time? What are your impressions?

Me. Played about 2-3 hours so far. Amazing atmosphere, writing, and acting. Very difficult, despite having a few hours I feel like I've only made 20 mins of progress. And I'm stuck right now too

Ah fuck. I moved around a bit in that first room with the new ones too. I was going to suffer through for the trophy, but if I'm not going to get it I'll just switch back to the new ones.

well shit i lost like a hour or so of progress because i didnt notice this doesnt have an auto saves anywhere and the game got glitched and got stuck on an animation. restarted to where i was my last save.

ugh

I got to put some time into this last night - my first time with this game and it's just super charming. What a cool world. I love Manny. I just joined got out of the first region.

So far I've only saved twice since it seems to take a weirdly long time (playing on Vita) - better start being more circumspect on that it seems.

I really like how unobtrusive the commentary bits are. You can check it out if you are interested, but it doesn't just start up in a distracting way when you're in the middle of something. That's a nice touch. I don't know if I've played other games with a commentary feature, but this seems like a great way to handle it.

Crazy to think that this will probably sell way more copies than it did when originally released.

If it does well, people in the industry will notice.

I've only played an hours, but so far the puzzles remind me of stuff like the infamous cat-hair mustache. I would have never put together the solution to getting the lead by myself. There's so many steps and assumptions
even if you realize that you might be able to intercept a message through the tube system, asking the balloon guy for two dead worms, finding the server room after you break the machine, and then fitting the marked card through the barely visible slot in the tube is crazy.

Would I have eventually figured it out if I was dead-set on using a guide and had a bunch of time and patience? Probably, but in a story-based game I just want to see the next character interaction or cutscene.

I'm still really enjoying it though, characters and dialogue are great.

Hate to moan over £1 but I prefer to buy things from Humble. DRM free + Steam copy for £1 less than Steam. Shitty staggered launch strategy DF. I suggest people hold off for next week when it will be even cheaper on GMG with a code.

never played the game, love it so far. vita version is great, despite the low framerate in remastered mode. touchscreen controls work really well.

super charming game, hope it does well enough to make more lucas arts adventure ports possible.

The game pops up a text box literally telling you it doesn't have autosaves and you should save often. :p

Probably, but in a story-based game I just want to see the next character interaction or cutscene.

This is a classic adventure game though. The puzzles ARE the gameplay, and through examining every object you encounter and going through all the dialogue with everyone you meet, you should be able to get enough clues to piece things together. This game is all about patience and thinking things through.

Nothing in GF really came close to GK3 despite your reference.

It's a tough game, no question. I played it back in the day and got stuck so many times, never ended up finishing it. When play it on PS4 I'm gonna have no qualms about consulting a walkthrough when I hit a roadblock. The story is good enough to stand on its own.

Me.

I love the writing and the humour between characters, but I don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing half of the time, and that's really hurting my experience with the game so far.

Reposting what I mentioned earlier:

Advenure game puzzles 101 is basically make sure you exhaust every possible dilaog option in conversations, examine every viable object in each location and try to pick it up, examine every item in your inventory, and always be thinking about possible item/object interactions as you progress.

The information you receive from conversations and what Manny says when examining objects should give you enough clues to figure things out eventually. Since the game doesn't keep any notes or relevant information for you, you really need to pay attention. Not everything mentioned are going to be throw-away flavor text descriptions!

Well I'm near the beginning of the game and went to visit the big orange guy at his shack. It says he's in the junkyard, but the junkyard door seems to be locked. The secretary tells me she's busy and I exhausted all conversations with the other guy down the hall.

Now I'm stumped.

I have a scythe, playing cards, a loaf of bread, some balloons, and a fire extinguisher. None of those seem to help me right now

There were no Grim Fandango walkthroughs or hints online when I first played this game many years ago... Just had to stick it out and sometimes become stuck for days on certain puzzles until a literal "a-ha!" moment came about. The reward for completing the puzzle on my own was much more satisfactory than using a walkthrough would have been.

So, for those stuck just keep at it. It might take you a while to beat it in the end but surely you'll be happier for it,right? Right?

Put in a few hours

For someone who has never played this i am really enjoying my self!

The only old school adventure games i played like this was the first 2 broken sword games on Playstation.

Heh, this is bringing me back.

All of the gameplay involves figuring out puzzles like that. Go everywhere, talk to everyone, examine every fixed object and eventually you'll figure out what to do.

In the mean time: Run you pigeons! It's Robert Frost!

Are you sure you explored every location you could possibly go to?

This is a good site to use to get non-spoilery hints to slowly nudge you in the right direction if you're completely stumped:

Pretty sure.

I explored the side alley, the festival w/ balloon dude, both rooms on the main floor (one with the weird machine and one with the table and the 2 different hoses that create foam).

Explored the back alley/parking lot with the junkyard and shack. Explored my main hallway and office.

I don't think I missed anywhere. I'll use those hints as a last resort but I really want to try and figure this out on my own. There must be something I missed.

What about the office basement?

ahhhhhhhh damn, i just made it to the mail sorter part.

hope it wont take that long to restart

You might not have to restart your game if you only moved in the first room but I can't guarantee it. Restarting with a new game keeps your options saved so it's the only I way know to make sure you're tank from the beginning.
