Growlanser IV: Wayfarer of Time - Vita Compatible! |OT|

If you don't have the stone for an ability equipped, you learn 1/20th of the ability points. So you can learn more without having it equipped, but it would take much, much longer. For that matter, you can multiply the rate at which abliities are learned by equipping the same stone multiple times.

What the fuck, why couldn't they just keep Japanese voice intact?
Licensing.

I can't say I mind too much, as it lets me read through the story quickly and get to the good parts.

Edit: Beaten. I guess I shouldn't spend five minutes typing a reply.

I sorta agree for some parts.

I do miss the voicework but my reading speed's faster than how fast the actors read the lines, so I can get through the non-battle bits fast. Kinda sucks that you can tell that they took the voicework out.

Thanks for clarifying; I thought it was zero points. I guess it's more worth it to learn skills you need more faster by having stones (multiple) equipped.

greyed out dialog options just mean i'm locked out of a particular story path?

No. It's personality related. Your dialogue choices change as you respond to people. Respond nicely and jerk comments get greyed out, respond negatively, and nice comments get greyed out. GL3 had a similar system, as I recall. It doesn't really affect all that much (or at all as I recall) but it's kind of fun for folks that want to act a certain way as they play the game.

Don't get me wrong, I would've appreciated it, but while I loved Persona 4's voice acting, I was skipping it by the end, so I definitely wouldn't be listening to Growlanser's Japanese voice track.

I'm not far enough into the game to have any dialogue options grayed out, but can you choose the dialogue options even if they're grayed out, or are they locked out altogether?

I don't mind either. I kind of prefer it, actually. It reminds me of the PS1 rpg glory days. And I also play the game on mute mostly
not a fan of the music, sadly..

I'm not a fan of the music either. When Aeana mentioned the music lowering in volume during the dialogue, I couldn't remember if I had heard the music at all. It's not bad, it's just completely forgettable.

They'll be locked out until your personality shifts in that direction, as I recall.

Thanks. I remember it was in GL3, but for some reason I thought GL4 dialogue options were attached to paths. I've been busy making Crevanille have a nice personality for some reason.

Ironically half of why the lack of VA is mildly offputting is my experience with Langrisser IV/V's imports, back when I was really interested in elusive stuff like this that stays in Japan. This team's games seem to always want to jump at loads of VA if possible, even with Devil Survivor!

Yay, managed a complete in the mock spell battle. It's not like it's difficult, but the way to do it easily didn't strike me until I tried it two times unsuccessfully. The reward you get for it is pretty neat. Too neat, maybe? I wonder if I'll ever even use it, or hold onto it forever waiting for the "right time" that will never come.

I heard the trick to that battle involves using
the gates.

Or simply getting a killing blow at the right time.

Boy is the new gem system weird coming off of II and III, but I think I get it now.

So, is it safe to assume that this is one of the harder Growlanser games? 30 hours in and the last few mission battles have been tough. Why is there no load option?! I've had to restart a lot because I wasn't satisfied with what I did.

About 11 hours in the game so far and I'm really enjoying it. Battle system is fluid and the artwork is pretty nice. Haven't played many SRPG games so I'm glad I took the chance with this one.

Yes, it's probably the hardest of the GLs.

Damn, and I thought Growlanser II was a pain.

Though it does seem kinda bullshit at times, throwing you into a tough battle with little way to prepare, or making enemies respawn almost unreasonably fast.

For some reason, the game looks "cheaper" on the Vita's screen. Particularly the backgrounds. It can't just be the size, because TV out via my PSP Go actually looks really great, and I think the game might even look better that way than it does on the PSP Go itself. On the other hand, as usual, the Vita is much more comfortable for me to hold than the PSP Go. I can't always do TV out since the TV isn't always available, plus it's a pain to transfer my saves constantly and re-register the DS3 with the PSP Go and the PS3 constantly. Dilemmas! (#firstworldproblems?)

Shame they never created a all-in-one charger/video output chord. If they had, you could just play using a registered PS3 controller on your PSP Go.

I kinda regretted getting the UMD at first, but playing awhile on the 3000... honestly, with this color scheme I can't imagine it looking "right" on the Vita. Maybe I'll grab that version and try again when it goes on sale, but now the most appealing part of the Vita is the system being more comfortable to hold rather than the screen.

Well, if you get the cradle for the PSP Go, you can do video out and charge at the same time. The problem is that we only have one DS3, and any time it's used with the PS3, it's de-registered from the PSP Go, so I have to go through the registration process again (hooking PSP Go and DS3 up to PS3 via USB, going through the menus, etc.)

Well damn, I should get the cradle, huh? I didn't realize you could do that.

Eh, I dont have a ps3 so Sony doesnt give a shit about me. If you own a Vita and no PS3 Sony doesnt care about your money. It's fucking hard to update that store.

I'm think about getting this but I've never been into strategy RPGs. What I don't like about strategy RPGs is that you have a whole bunch of characters (like a multitude of classes) to maintain and the very slow pacing of battles.

Is this any different?

I'm 8 hours in and the most characters I've had control over in a battle was 3. I think this goes up to 4, but yeah, it's not really comparable to others ones. It's more RTS-like too. No class system either, I just equip three spellstones and learn spells/knacks off of them, sort of like a mash up of FFVII's materia and IX's equipment.

Yep, very different. This game has a traditional RPG mold with towns/dungeons/fields (with free movement and exploration!), and normal fights end in less than a minute most of the time. The battle system is a semi-realtime system rather than completely being turn-based. Battles themselves are also smaller scale, since you'll only bring 4 people into battle.

This game starts a new storyline, so you can jump right in no problem.
Worth noting too that, interestingly enough, the same can't be said of any other Growlanser. II continues I though you don't NEED to play I, III's a prequel to I, and VI continues off of V though V itself is unrelated to I-IV. Only IV is completely standalone outside of MAYBE references in the OVA or whatever, but I don't really know much there and I'm assuming they're the vague ones you can interpret however you want.

Normal battles end in less than a minute? That's new for SRPGs, any vids on it?

So I'm guessing this is not your typical SRPG game, eh.

I really want to slap whoever thought it would be a good idea to put escort quests in a game like this.

All the positive word of mouth on twitter and over here has forced my hand.

I'll probably be grabbing this after I finish Nayuta and The Golden. Gonna need a great RPG to hold me off till Celceta.

Do it! Would you be getting the English version or the Japanese version? I actually don't know if the JP version is on PSN, but since you understand Japanese, it might be a better idea since IMO the voice work adds quite a lot, and there isn't any in the NA version.

loving the battle system, but i rarely get the bigger battles right on the first try. can the outcome of a battle influence the story?

No. It's personality related. Your dialogue choices change as you respond to people. Respond nicely and jerk comments get greyed out, respond negatively, and nice comments get greyed out. that's good to know, thanks.

Not sure honestly. It's up on the JP store but it's still about 5,000 Yen. It is on the passport list though, so if I can find a physical copy for cheap I can just work the system.

On the flip side, I want to support these kinds of English releases given how few and far between they can be at times.

The L+R+Start+Select soft reset works here.

I still haven't figured out what the numbers and symbols in the Enemy Scan lv2 window in-battle mean, could anyone clear that up for me? I tried analyzing an enemy to cross check if any stats matched, but got nothing.
