gt4 does 1080i ingame

1) 960x540x16bit front and back buffer, no Z-buffer: 2073600 bytes
Shouldn't you also be able to have
960x540x16bit front and back buffer with 16bit Z-buffer: 3110400 bytes

That seems like the most obvious way to go to me.

However, I don't know how would GT4 engine just switch to this mode... there's just so much less texture buffer memory when you render in resolution this high.

And that is the reason why most PS2 games do not support 480p, they use a half resolution framebuffer so they get a bit more free VRAM. Unless you have some incredible optimizations in your texture streaming code it's very hard to have both 480p and good quality textures.
Actually, that is not the reason why most games on PS2 do not support 480p. There's a crapload of PS2 games that render in full height buffer but still do not support 480p, just because developer was too lazy to add a simple switch to activate it. It's even more obvious when you see how many of those games can be forced into progressive scan using that blaze video adapter.

Someone at GTPlanet posted a pic of the intro where there's around 20+pit workers moving away from a car as it pulls out.

Screw the intro. I want to see the GAME running in 480p or 1080i. All of this seems like nothing but hot air.

Had a thought:

iLink racing cockpit-mode still work? (link up 3 PS2s and 3 TVs - two side windows and one center)

'cause just think of three HDTVs all running the game in 1080i.

Ultimate racing game. Ever.

I'd say that most of the incredulous are haters. You need only look to their post history to see how unlikely it was they would have purchased the game in the first place -- 1080i or not. Nonetheless, ingame runs at 480p, while the photomode supports 1080i. In terms of visuals, this still puts GT4 well ahead of any other racer on the market.

How's everyone taking it on OA, so far? Must feel good to be you, at the moment.

He posted a pic of the pitcrew working on a AC cobra and it was kind of dark, I dont know if you could tell if the picture was in 1080i or not. Either way, I'll ask for a shot of the game in motion with 1080i and the option and believe me, the option for 1080i in photomode will be in the photomode section and not the game menu, now lets just hope he has a hdtv :lol

gt4 does 1080i and 480p ingame. It's not photomode exclusive :P

You know, this entire discussion is superflous to me. GT4 looks better than any racer on the market, or slated for release, thus what point is there to bicker over whether or not the game runs in progressive scan? Either way, the game will look unsurpassedly gorgeous -- and the haters will cry.

"gt4 does 1080i and 480p ingame. It's not photomode exclusive :P"

I reserve the right to disbeleive until I am proven wrong, and not by some untranslated japanese text on a webpage or by "someone" claiming it.

And I also will not have someone question my faith in GT4, for it is the ONLY reason why I own a PS2 at this point. If it wasn't for it, I'd be playing halo2 on the Xbox I wouldn't have sold because it didn't have GT4 coming out for it.

How do you all like backfire?

You people are dellusional if you think that of all the PS2 games, something like GT4 is the only one able to run on 1080i.

jett said:
I uh, find that *VERY* hard to believe. I bet my ass that the 1080i mode is only available for the photo mode.

jett said:
Well, I still doubt it.

I simply can't convey to you in words how good it feels to see jett get 0wn3d this badly!

Why would anyone else here doubt cobragt3's comments in the FIRST place? It's makes perfect sense that the PS2 can do HDTV resolution, as the company said even before it launched the system that they designed it to eventually support HDTVs in the future.

Racing down Nursburgring in those F1 cars in 1080i is going to be nothing short of NIRVANA!!!!! :D

MX Unleashed (Xbox) was also 1080i

Yup...and THUG I/II as well....

It is 1080i ingame. Case closed.

Polyphowned.

Do you have another source? Or are you going by the same some-dude-whos-really-credible-I-promise-on-some-messageboard logic as cobragt?

I really want this to be true..you guys should be permabanned if GT4 does not support 1080i ingame.

Edit: Isamu, THUG was 720p on Xbox, not 1080i. I dunno about THUG 2, completely burnt out on the series to even bother trying it.

That shot looks pretty weird. Everything is mostly smooth (and not just because of the blur) and then you have some huge jaggies (larger than a pixel) around the... lights(?).

That's a wallpaper from SCEI. Notice the SCEI logo.

What a surprise, like every other single GT4 picture cobragt3 posts, this one is also extremely blurry. :P Sorry but I'm not convinced...yet. :P

how about you guys roll over to gtp, put your input in so hopefully someone with the game will reply instead of staying here and saying bs or adding your assumptions? go to gtplanet.net and ask adban is all this 1080 biz true or not.

I wasn't trying to prove anything with that pic if any of you are getting that impression. I just wanted to show off the backfire, looks fucking real.

i should be able to get this tonight so everyone can stop being mincing great cockmasters later today....

Holy shit dude, it was a whole, what, 4 posts below yours? I don't refresh every 2 seconds, and you edited your post. Lighten the fuck up.

Whippy do wa..so the backfire looks real!!!1111 How old are you? I bet you like doing burnouts with your bicycle :D and looking back at the dust you kick up on power slides

i just smacked myself...

i remeber i was really sad when sony said during e3 that gt4 wouldn't even support 480p.

oh boi oh boi!!!! my 61inch is going to be in heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

would i actually import a game i don't like just for a taste of 1080i goodness?

...sources say YES! at least the japanese versions of gt have good soundtracks. let us know, dcharlie.

As some others have mentioned, I would have expected a HUGE uproar about this if it were true...the game is just about to be released in Japan, and NO PS2 game has done 1080i before, and only a few XBOX games do, and none of them are as graphic intensive as GT4. IF it is true ingame somehow, I expect it to be like GT's HiFi mode...in other words, it comes at the cost of some cut backs. You don't have to be a damned hater to doubt this...simple logic would demand some cautionary skepticism.

Backfire in a game isn't exactly an accomplishment...any rally game since Sega Rally 2 that's been worth a shit has had it in some form.

1080 in game on the other hand is a ridiculous achievement...quite possibly the greatest programming achievement in the history of video games. I'd take a trip down to a store just to see that sucker in it's full glory, since my TV can't take advantage of it. Having said all that, I'm still a little skeptical about how it's being achieved, if at all. The next couple days will tell the story.

Just hope the game is fun to play...I really couldn't get into GT3 at all. But racing on the real Nurburgring and Le Mans' Circuit de la Sarthe at 60fps is too tempting to pass up.

My most anticipated game of all time is almost here! IRJJKENNI*@U(U^&*(UIJNDOIJ(*#@U@U)(

That's about how I feel at the moment.

i'm gonna say that they are making the same mistake i have made tons of times in the past and they are mistaking standard resolutions for 1080i that are bumped up by the television and not by the actual system. i swore up and down that pgr2 had 1080i because my tv let me scale it up and it actually looked way better BUT it wasnt any of the xbox's doing.

let me tell you kids something, looks like you all dont keep up with gt4 at all. I'm kind of sick of having to say this over and over but the proof is in your face and if you dont like why dont you just leave and stop worrying about it. Some of you come off as haters or something. I have posted links to threads of people who have the game and I even posted a link to a discussion that contrasted 480p and 1080i in gt4.
Well, you're right -- I don't keep up with all the Gran Turismo 4 news. But I'm still going to lecture you anyway.

First of all, I'm going to remind you that citing other message boards -- especially when you keep calling out one particular person -- is NOT "proof." When I have a copy in my hands that I run at 1080i on my HDTV, that will be proof. I'm also inclined to believe a review from a major site indicating that GT4 does 1080i in-game, or a photograph from a reliable source of the GT4 manual or configuration screen indicating that 1080i is a valid option for in-game graphics, or a first-hand report from someone on THIS forum that has been reliable and truthful in the past. (DCharlie's word would be just fine by me.)

No offense, but I don't know any of the people you are citing, and quite frankly, I have my doubts about YOUR authenticity. EVERY SINGLE POST you've made on this forum has been related to GT4, and that makes me think that you have an agenda of some kind. I'll stop short of saying you're on the payroll, but I'm highly suspicious. Short of my own experience examining the game, I can only rely on my own web of trust.

Second, I take offense to you characterizing people who don't believe you as "haters." There are hardware experts on this board who are VERY familiar with the PS2 limitations, and also have several people who are game developers in their own right. A lot of the doubts in this thread have been expressed by those experts, and they have provided some plausible rationale about why they think it may not be possible. You, on the other hand, keep pointing to some other board member as your "authority." Want to guess who comes off sounding more credible?

I'm honestly tempted to say that if GT4 DOESN'T support 1080i in-game, your account should be permabanned because of the way you've carried on in this thread. Then again, it might be more fun to listen to you getting mocked until you leave on your own. We'll just have to see how this plays out, hmmm?

haha, that is funny.

I have also seen this guy on other boards for months and suprise -- all he ever talks about is GT4.

Isn't that what Dragons Lair on Xbox does? Just sets it so the TV does the work? I don't know for a fact, just what I've heard.
