GTA 6 just got leaked (Up: confirmed real)

Is there any reason this would affect development of the game? These seems like an IT department and Legal department issues. animators, programmers, narrative director, mission designers etc would carry on with their jobs as normal, no?

10K lines of code were publicly posted. There's a shitload of code they now have to re-write for security/anti-cheat purposes. They'll also have to go through every video which was leaked to ensure there's nothing similarly sensitive in there, and if there is, protect it. And that's after they reassess their security and workflow policies. They have a lot of work to do purely as a result of this leak.

Well I guess we can all thank the hacker for being responsible for single handedly delaying GTA6 by another 2 years minimum.

All this for internet fame, he screwed over millions of gamers worldwide.
And people are applauding him for his efforts...

The world is a fucked up place indeed........ Filled with morons.

I doubt 10000 lines of code could strongly affect the development, putting everything at risk, it could be even less if you exclude comments and whitespaces... A game engine with all its subsystems has muuuuuch more than that. It's another story if this hacker would have posted just a part of what he stole, in order to demonstrate he actually has something, and having stolen a bigger amount of the source code he didn't show. But judging from R* tweet it's not that tragic as everybody depicted it, or maybe they're just doing some damage control.

He's probably fucked eitherway. Rockstar North is a UK (Edinbugh, Scotland) company and they are the lead devs for all GTA games. So he can be prosecuted over here too no doubt.

Plus, it's a crime over here to hack into business's etc, more so blackmailing companies aswell.

We may not extradite him over to the States depending on background information of the kid. Gary McKinnon hacked into USA military systems & NASA, we blocked extradition to you guys.

So it all depends on how Take2 want to handle the ninjas. Try for an extradition via the USA govt for cybercrimes and poss fail, or do it in our courts.
Not shure. He is a minor and nothing indicates he is going to be judged as an adult. He could get quite nothing from the justice.

If it's true all he did was access someone's Slack account, then he'll get a slap on the hand.
Yeah it’s all age dependant.

Accessing someone’s account/computer is a breach of the computer misuse act whatever way you look at it. This guy/group clearly knew what they were doing or Rockstars security policies are so shit, that they were able to brute force an account or something. I am looking forward to seeing if we get a breakdown of how this intrusion occurred.

Most people think that security breaches are some mad APT group/Nation state with hundreds of members, but in actual fact most breaches are down to misconfigurations, poor code and SDLC, and really bad AAA (Authentication, authorisation and accountability) controls in place.

Yup. Gary McKinnon got into NASA because their Windows RDP had a default password.

Speaking of Grove Street Games, has the whole GTA Definitive Edition debacle kind of put some people off Rockstar a bit?. You know the sheer lack of respect shown to much loved games and a major part of their history and legacy?.

It has me a bit. Those remasters could of been legendary, and kept them relevant while bringing them to a new age of gamers.
That, and then putting out a big middle finger statement to RDR2 fans, which has sold over 50m copies (most pubs/devs would dream for that as a second place game in the studio, let alone first). To have "all hands on deck" to this... to this GTAV: Redux.

Leaving RDR2 without a patch in well over a year, which there were things they broke and needed to fix from the patch prior. Sigh.

Damage control is a thing

Believing its true just because they are telling you so is not as smart as you think it is

As stated on Neff Neff post, they will have to change thousand lines of code. Not only for GTA VI, but also V, if the source code for the game gets leaked to the public.

They have GTA Online running right now and that would be a shitshow if the source code gets out there

This is it for me also, I’d pay money for a patch as I’m a sucker for that game. But they could probably unlock it fairly easily on PS5/XSX, doesn’t even have to be rock solid, I can live with dips, but the fact that a beloved game is left stranded on old hardware whereas a lot of AAA devs have upscaled/patched is disappointing.

It’s their prerogative, I’ll be there day 1 for GTA6 and probably anything they release if I’m being honest but it does stink.

Bro you clearly have no idea how the real world works.
They have an obligation to tell the truth to investors. Take-Two Interactive has issued an 8-K SEC filing informing investors about the Rockstar Games hack and subsequent GTA 6 leaks.

Just like CDPR never lied to investors regarding Cyberpunk, right?

Go read or listen to the investor calls before release

You are being naive

Not saying that's the case here and they are lieing, but its a possibility, yes

People have their own reasons for doing this, we know about these threats when we connect everything to the internet, work remotely etc. git, collaboration, data is absolutely everywhere. Security of this data needs to be taken more seriously obviously over at Rockstar. It’s a bad day for them and I’m not happy to see this, but at the same time I’m not going to necessarily have any sympathy for a multi billion dollar conglomerate.

The devs and artist sure, but not the company. The devs and artists will get paid either way.

If it’s attacking a health institution or physical devices that cause physical harm, then that is when “hacking” crosses over in to something more nefarious like stuxnet etc.

This is low level stuff though, oh no leaking code for a game. Some people on here need to get outside more if they think this is some truly awful, evil shit.

This is a silly strawman.

No one is saying hackers hacking into video game companies is going to cause anyone physical harm or cause cancer.

If GTA6 however gets delayed by a year, or if key parts of the story get spoiled, or if key features or mechanics of the game intended as a surprise by the creator get spoiled by these shitstains, then it's causing very real harm to people's gaming hobby.

And your point about sympathy is redundant because it is not the multi-billion dollar conglomerate corporate overlords of these gaming companies who are affected by this sort of stuff, it is the very devs and artists who design and intend to delight gamers with a designed gaming experience who get their work exposed in a light they never intended before it was ever ready. The corporate overloads couldn't give a toss. So you should be sympathetic by your own logic.

That said, I care more about my experience playing whatever the eventual GTA6 game will be, and i'd rather not see parts of it spoiled, or misrepresented in a way that destroys my excitement for the game before the devs ever intended for it to be shown. And if the game gets delayed because of this... well.. there's a special place in hell for the wankers who caused that, imho.

That you go so far to defend hacking, is in my view frankly disgusting.

Not sadder than living in a world where you trust whatever corporate bullshit companies throws at you

Thinking that thousand lines of code being stolen would cause delays should be just common sense. It's not a reach.

Do you think that they will ship the game with those lines in it?

It's like seeing that ship closing the Suez Canal and wondering "could it cause any delays?", and then someone saying "nah man, the ship's company told investors that it was no biggie"

1. Source code. Is it really that hard to understand!?

Remember Cyberpunk 2077's source code leak? Yeah, CDPR started over from 0. Imagine the implications when R* has to do this. If this is the case, 2 years is nothing and maybe they'll just scrap the whole damn game.

10 years of secret development, up for grabs to the highest bidder.

Get it now!?
Nobody starts from zero. What would be the purpose? "I guess we gotta write new code that works exactly like the old code" isn't what they're going to do, but if it is what they do they're stupid.

Anyone have a link to an analysis of the source code?

It's always fascinating when we get a glimpse into a major developer like this. I don't want to download it myself and go through it, but surely someone has analyzed and posted some insights or interesting bits?

Just wait for a Youtuber to do the work for us while we watch it with adblock on

Get over yourself. I’m not defending hacking. I actively work in the industry to prevent these types of incidents.

I’m saying that it’s an eventuality that any company, if a group wants to get in….will.

I am sympathetic to a degree, but I’m a realist. It’s sucks if this delays things. But it’s not the end of the world. If it increases security within Rockstar then that’s a positive right? Every cloud has a silver lining. If this had happened later down the line when the game was nearly complete then this would be 100 times worse. The stuff in the leak is pretty meaningless in my eyes if they can shut the loop on the source code, with cheating etc. they have saved face quite well.

Get some perspective in your life, if this is the worst thing to happen to you this year. I advise you go over to the off topic forum and read the Russia begins invasion of Ukraine thread and then appreciate that this is an insignificant thing to get wound up about.

I mean, all the cyberpunk hack did was delay a patch by a month or something. Not sure why he's saying started over from 0.

If I remember rightly it was delayed due to CDPR still doing remote working and work stations where locked out due to the hack then CDPR requested all devices to be returned to be scanned for malware etc etc.

Seeing takes like "think what this did to the developer!" are something else. Any developer that is emotionally hurt by this leak need to take a step back, or possibly a week off, and re-evaluate their priorities. It's a product that they're being paid to make. It owes them nothing and they owe it nothing, including emotional investment. It got leaked? Did that affect their salary? No? Then who cares? Move on.

Developers are getting paid. We see leaks. Everyone wins. The only losers are the ones who have to suffer through reading "work is my passion" tweets.

Even if the hacker got 100% of the source code, what real-world effect would it really have? It's not like some company can buy it and suddenly release their own GTA. It doesn't work like that, at all. No legit developer would touch that code, because of the legal ramifications of doing do.

And there we go.

People can stop simping for them and offering messages of sympathies on twitter now.

Rockstar to all those concerned:
I literally had a friend argue that corporations are people. I was like what are you Mitt Romney?

People have lost it with this whole moral outrage cycle. Everyone just wants to cash in and get some pats on the back for showing how much they care. Now on era, people are upset that because the alleged hacker is 16 years old and autistic, he should not be jailed. Like wtf is going on? Why do we have to show sympathy for every fucking thing that happens? When PSN got hacked in 2011, we all ripped Sony a new one instead of saying my hearts go out to them. I remember Kaz Hirai going up there and literally bowing for 2 minutes in shame. Or as an apology or whatever the hell he was doing. He wasnt even the CEO of Playstation at the time, but as CEO of Sony he went out there like a man and apologized instead of asking for thoughts and prayers.

If they were Doxxed, received death threats, or had their bank accounts hacked then ok, my thoughts and prayers. But this is a hack just like so many hacks over the years. Naughty Dog, CD Project Red. Ubisoft gets hacked by airplane stewards everyday. No one cares.

All this distracts from the real dialogue which should be DOMINATING twitter. i.e., is the game last gen? when did the game start development? Why has it taken them 9 years to reveal the next GTA? 10 if they reveal it next year? Is the game in development hell? Over an hour of footage leaked and a not a single new or innovative feature in the game? Maybe the game is next gen. Maybe the game isnt in development hell, and maybe there are alot of new innovative features in the game that the leak didnt show. But surely talking about a massive leak's content is more important than talking about whether or not this 16 year old deserves to be prosecuted. Who knows maybe it would force Rockstar to issue a statement definitively declaring the game will be next gen only. Or at the very least reveal it earlier than normal.

A developer can make tweaks to the code to avoid legal consequences. It's easy.

Lol, no. Do you think a UbiSoft would buy stolen code for a GTA game, make "tweaks" to it, and use it themselves? Get real. No way in hell.
EDIT: Not to mention that the initial act of purchasing said stolen code is highly, highly illegal.

doubt 10000 lines of code could strongly affect the development

It's certainly small potatoes in terms of the game's body of data, but it's public, raw code nonetheless, and you don't want it out there, for numerous reasons. It's not the worst thing to happen, and the code will almost certainly be updated as time goes on, but they have to be careful about what's been exposed regardless, since it gives anyone looking for exploits and weaknesses a terrific head start. Entire games and systems have been breached over less.

missed the posts, anyone have the footage reloaded anywhere ?

I don't wish to upload it anywhere because I don't feel like getting banned off a service but it's nothing but walking around in debug mode. If you've seen a few clips, you've seen them all.

Did everyone forget that GTA is traditionally a console release? How are exploits and weaknesses going to be effectively used in a closed platform like Playstation or Xbox?

It can happen. The Wii was hacked early on using a weakness found in Smash Bros Brawl.

It's simply not good to have your code out in the open.
