GTA IV: The Lost and Damned - Hands-On Previews Out Today

Well yeah since this technically isn't an expansion (the content is completely independent of the original game), they should just let you buy it without owning a copy of the original. I flogged mine a long time ago.

...

Yeah but then they'd probably price it as a full game.

Wow, this looks to add a lot of stuff. I didnt expect a new game to play.

I wonder when is a disc based version of this coming out. When both dlc are released? Id buy that.

A little hope for PS3 and PC owners:

In the last 1up yours Shane said that the episodic dlcs will hit PS3 and PC as well.

Yeah I heard that too, I'm pretty sure it will happen but the PS3 won't get it til the spring or summer imo.

He also said DMC4 wouldn't go to 360, FFXIII would remain exclusive etc. He says alot of things.

I'm not sure how I missed that yesterday, but joke material. Unless he means like a year plus later maybe. MS didn't serve up $50 million or so for notta.

Exactly. Shane's just tweaking his base.

It's really hard to care about DLC at this point, and it's even harder to trust any media site about it.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for DLC because, after all, they did make several amazing games in the pst and there was a lot of feedback from GTA4. We already see that they potentially fixed driving a bit. Then again, there was always the very positive feedback too, which is the reason I too am worried about trusting any sites.

As I said in another thread it's very clear from GTA 4 where they want to take this iteration of the franchise. That may change with the next iteration and full proper game they release but anybody whining because the lost and the damned isn't like the "old gtas" deserves to be kicked in the nads. They can go play some other series and ignore this game and hopefully any threads that pop up related to it.

No one expects Lost and the Damned to be like the old GTA games. I expect it to be like GTA4, which is a direction I don't totally hate but many aspects were a bit messy, with a bit more understanding of what did and didn't work. Even if there was a lot of hate for GTA4 (I admit that I'm not the biggest fan of it), there were a lot of specifics people listed about what could change. Driving is one, the other is now the inclusion of mid-mission check points. I'm hoping Lost and the Damned will be GTA4 if Rockstar had an editor. Again, I do want to play this when it is released. Since I own the PS3 version of GTA4, I'm going to need to either borrow GTA4 on the 360 just to play this game. I actually would be happy if they announced they would just be selling Lost and the Damned as a stand alone in stores. It released for PS3 would also be helpful.

If anything, the inclusion of mid-mission checkpoints should make some of the 'haters' feel vindicated. Not all critisim is bad. This isn't just for GTA4, but all sorts of games and the snappy attacks from the first sign if critisim gets really stupid around these parts.

Critcism is always valid. I did plenty of it myself. What isn't is the hyperbole that often came from the other side on this forum that GTA 4 is garbage and that everybody was dissappointed or that they had the right to demand a specific iteration of the GTA franchise.

There were some people who did nothing but trash the game so it doesn't make much sense for them to pop in Lost and the Damned threads to do the same since there is no reason for them to own it. (Not aimed at Duck Amuck just to clarify so it doesn't come off that way. While he was a pretty harsh critic of GTA 4 he generally discusses it intelligently without overly dropping into hyperbole)

Should have got the 360 version in the first place. Anyone with a 360 who got the ps3 version instead screwed themselves imo. Don't forget, there's still another episode coming later this year. That's potentially a good 40 hours of extra content.

It could be 1000 hours of missions I wouldn't care. The DLC I want was the gameplay removed from the other games, extra stuff to do to make the city compelling and better need of exploring the envirronement than those freaking pigeon.

The only thing I don't want more of is missions really.

At first I wasn't too excited for the DLC as I found GTA IV to be kind of dissapointing, but recently I've been replaying it and I'm enjoying it a lot more this time around. Also its pretty cool to play through the game now that I know what The Lost and Damned is going to be about and some of stuff that will be in it, as you can see all the little things that Rockstar have included in the main game that will link in with the DLC. Like today when I was playing, I noticed that otuside one of the Burger Shots you can see members of The Angels of Death (which we now know are going to be the rival gang of The Lost) hanging out, and you can even hear one of them talking on a payphone about The Lost. And also when
Roman gets kidnapped during GTA IV, you get a text message after you rescue him about how it was a Biker that kidnapped him and handed him over to the Russians
, so maybe in this DLC we will see who it was that kidnapped him.

Has it been mentioned anywhere yet if Johnny will be able to hang out with friends similar to the way you could with Niko? Also I wonder if Rockstar will add more of the random characters you could meet such as Eddie and Hossan since that was one of my favorite parts of GTA IV and I found some of those characters to be more interesting than most of the main story characters.

I assume most of the big sites are going to review this and it should be interesting to see how they rate it compared to the original content.

It depends on how you review it. Do you compare it to the other downloadable content on the market or do you review it like an Xbox Live arcade title, or like a regular title or somewhere in between or just on a value for money proposition.

I would say in the realm of something like Shivering Isles. Somewhere in between I suppose.

I liked some missions in GTAIV, but how come there was such a low percentage of innovation?

You're complaining about a low percentage of innovation... and you're a Saints Row fan?

I'd say actually in the same mindset that they reviewed Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty in. That seems like the best parallel for it, with the obvious difference of one being stand alone compared to the other.

I'm talking about mission/activity innovation/variety.

Yes.

Did you ever play the second game? Probably not heh, otherwise you wouldn't have said such a thing. I'm not talking about story stuff, because aside from the fact that it's a generic story, it's pretty awesome still. I know that the story and setting in SR have no innovation whatsoever, but at least it's got some great easter eggs, unlockables etc.

well I hope that the engine changes will be in BOTH sides of the game. :lol @ "Arm Wrestling" I dare anyone to defend that one, Id rather go on more "dates" with Roman :lol

I think it would be cool if they let this DLC be a standalone game, like you don't need the original game to play it, I think it will sell allot more cause there are allot of players who sold their copies and others bought it on PS3 (but that's not gona happen).

But then they wouldn't have people buying the full game to access the DLC. A combination of dropping to £18 and the upcoming new content has seen GTA4 at the top of the Play.com charts in the UK for the last few weeks, my friend at the local Gamestation tells me that they are burning through new copies by the day.

I can understand why as well. Just watching these short teasers is getting my 'GTA Excitement Gland' working overdrive all over again just like last year. NEW GTA IN A MONTH! I just booked a week off work in preparation for it. Points will be bought next week.

On a more tangential point is anyone else getting a vibe with the DLC plans akin to The Wire? One basic setting with lots of different characters in different social situations interrelating? I like this idea a lot. Maybe the next Episode could be set in Algonquin with Donald Love like white collar criminals, or focus on the Yardies. I'd be more than happy to see them extend this for a long time to come, two episodes a year at £13 telling different stories.

Arm wrestling was awesome in Shenmue and you can't deny it.

This is a fantastic idea. We know we're getting at least one more due to the MS contract, so hopefully they sell better than expected.

Day one bitches just watched those short trailers and i can't wait.:D

Looks like the UK won't be getting a download code to buy at retail, instead it looks like we get a limited run of 'Lost and Damned' themed 1600 point card. Wonder if we'll get a free poster too :p

Play.com have it listed for £13.99 on their site. Will save some getting a 2100pt card I guess.

I'm absolutely looking forward to this game, but really?

The first day is downloading since I'm expecting the servers to disintegrate immediately upon release, the next 3 days are the DLC, the rest is playing it again. When GTA 4 came out I did almost literally nothing else for the whole week. 10 hour sessions at a time. I fucking love this game.
