Hey I play all of it. Though I haven't done much spvp since beta. (New map types please.) I did leveling, then at 80 I hit a bunch of dungeons, then I started doing some Orr, then the past two weeks I've been heavy into WvWvW.

On that note, it doesn't seem this laptop can handle the game. This poor baby overheats like a mofo. So I won't be in-game again until I get back from visiting family. Probably sometime Saturday.

edit: Maybe it's because I'm a Mesmer, but I do enjoy WvWvW. I float in and out of zergs, do small groups, and go solo.

I need to get to 10 so I can start getting some ascended rings. Still using greens that I bought yonks ago.

On a side note I have been slacking on my dailies lately. I blame real life and 3D porn.

My friend showed me 3D porn once...It was confusing. 2 chicks just dancing in there underwear throwing random articles of clothing at the camera. 3D!

Anyways, just take up JC and craft some baller rings. Once you get an ascended drop, there's still a good chance it won't match the stas you want, haha

Clearly the 3D implementation you watched was tacked on at the last second. The ones I watch to keep me awake during late night dungeon runs is basically like real life.

I am so bad at levelling peofeasions. I have none on my main and my alt is a level 70 jeweller. Fail.

Mega-post time!

A while ago I made a post on how to quickly identify and interpret items which can help you when hunting for the perfect gear.

In continuing my series of explaining the cool things about their game that ArenaNet constantly obfuscates or leaves indirectly explained (intentionally or not :p), I wanted to illustrate why and in some sense how you would put together multiple exotic sets, keeping them all in your inventory to swap between at will.

Theoretically you could have all of them look identical, if your one look is that important to you, or you can use it an an opportunity to have multiple themed sets for different purposes.

Putting Together Your Exotic Armor Sets

Unlike many RPGs, every aspect of an armor set in GW2 is completely unrelated and interchangeable (stats, looks, effects). Many games have the "set bonus" thing going on, but the fact that you can get any set bonus on any set in the game and have it look however you want is really compelling to me. For those that don't know- having 6 Superior Runes of the Whatever, one in every armor slot, enables all 6 of the rune bonuses.

Many of them are boring- kind of standard stat bonus fare. But some of them are really quite interesting and fun. The Lyssa rune removes all conditions and gives you all boons when you use your elite skill. The Ogre rune, which has a somewhat uninspired 4% damage boost on the 6, allows you to summon rock dogs with the 4. The Centaur rune, which I absolutely require for my Mesmer's overworld set, gives you a speed boost when you use your healing skill.

During the Lost Shores event I put together my Eagle set finally. I now have three sets as I always wanted to, one each for each of the three roles a class can assume at any given time (the new trinity, I guess, though it can occur within classes now as well).

jAJ2WPltOaFie.jpg

What Do You Have Multiple Exotic Sets For?

They play pretty differently. They're all thieves, of course, and you can't retrait at will from anywhere just yet (templates were eventually added to gw1, though), but you can get a lot of variety switching up trait slots and using different effects. The Mad King set is the most fun, honestly. I made it during Halloween, obviously, but the build is great if your party doesn't have an elementalist or engineer, and needs conditions on lots of stuff. It's fun to spam the rune effect every 45 seconds with Basilisk Venom, and worth it even though it's currently a bit bugged- the venom effect doesn't always apply. Still a blast. Very kinetic, moving all over the battlefield with stealth even more than usual.

As a Golemancer I have over 16k health and boosted toughness, which while still thiefy-squishy, allows me to avoid getting one-shot by certain moves in EXP dungeons I'd otherwise be very susceptible to. The two golems very much complement each other, and they're both big, bulky, high-HP aggro targets with their own CC moves. The Defensive one has a condition removal field and the red one hits hard. I'll usually wait til the rune golem procs to bring out the elite. Then the major piece of this build is the Shortbow. Thieves have the opportunity to play a unique support role because of Cluster Bomb. Best blast finisher in the game, and if your party sets its dynamics up right, it can completely change a lot of very tough runs. One or more guardians with some combination of Purging Flames/Hallowed Ground will enable the group to get quite close to 25 stacks of might for a long time in almost any fight. Plus area healing, chaos armor, fire/frost, AOE weakness, and even stealth as needed. It's a lot of fun.

Then there's the Assassin build of course. Lots of backstabs and heartseeking. Waiting for the 50% mark for the executioner trait to kick in makes every boss fight feel like two separate encounters, which keeps the longer HP bouts a little more interesting. Even without fury, at least 1 out of every 2 hits with any weapon in this build is a critical. A full spike starting at full initiative (trait that adds dmg % per initiative, yum) when the opponent is below 25% health is quite an enjoyable thing.

I can switch up based on the needs of my party, the needs of the situation, and just for fun.

How Can I Put Together My Set(s)?

Like I said, there are 3 components for you to consider:
-Rune
-Stats (distribution)
-Appearance (skins)

Personally, I'd look around and decide on the rune you want first. They are acquired in different ways, and to some varying degree you'll be basing your build around the rune you choose.

Some runes can be bought outright on the TP (the vast majority). These are typically crafted, so if you have the right profession, you might be able to get one cheaper than buying it depending on mats.

Each dungeon also has a unique rune that can only be acquired by completing this dungeon. Yes, this is something that affects gameplay that you have to do dungeon runs for if you want them, so it's a perfectly valid criticism if you want to level that one against ArenaNet, since there's no other way to get the effects. I'll be frank though: most of them suck quite a lot. There are a few exceptions, but most have undesired effects.

Finally, you can salvage superior runes out of Exotics containing them (or just buy the Exotic piece you want with the rune already in it, if up on the TP). With a Black Lion kit you have a 100% chance to get them out. Search for Exotic armor pieces just on the off chance someone is selling the perfect one for you.

To get the stats you want, you need to acquire the right exotic pieces. The easiest way is to just save up the gold to buy it on the TP with the distribution you want. Hint: don't limit yourself to only level 80 items. The savings you get from a level 78 piece are pretty damn substantial and the stat difference comparatively negligible. Plus, you wouldn't need to use a fine transmutation stone. You can always replace the piece when you're rich one day.

Dungeon gear has a variety stat distributions you can seek out and work toward as well: From the dulfy
Finally, the Karma sets in Orr have a unique look and some unique stat distributions as well, which is sometimes overlooked: More Dulfiness

Pick the stat distribution that works best for your build and complements the rune you've chosen. As far as looks, well, it's all personal preference. You can go to www.gw2armor.com to see full sets, or preferably, www.gw2db.com, grab codes, and preview in-game. More fleshed out explanation of this is in the first post I linked to.

Isn't it Awkward to Keep and Switch Between the Sets?

Thanks to some cool design decision, it really isn't. First, a single 18-slot box can hold all three sets. A 20-slot can hold all three plus an extra weapon set. Even if you didn't get one from the Lost Shores event, you can buy them with Fractal Relics now as well, and they're not all that expensive!

Once you've got your sets, switching between them is a breeze. What was a confusing and inexplicable feature for me while leveling is a godsend at 80- right-click on the armor piece you want to switch, and go down the line clicking the pieces you want to switch to. No hunting through your inventory, no getting similar icons confused, no muss no fuss. Literally takes 4-5 seconds to switch sets.

I highly recommend making having multiple exotic sets one of your goals for high-level play. Doing so is a very good example of horizontal progression. Though you hit a stat ceiling quite rapidly compared to many games and do not continue to become objectively stronger, over time you can acquire more and more options to facilitate the best approach to any situation. Despite hundreds more hours of play, I'm not any better statistically than I was one month ago- but I do have much more to choose from.

What About Ascended Gear?

I know the addition of Ascended gear is a cause of major concern for some, especially those who aren't even currently specced out with exotic gear.

There are two things to consider at the moment:
1) What's impacted now
2) What's coming in the future

1. As far as right now, the only Ascended pieces are rings and back pieces. Strive for them and save up, hope they drop for you in higher-level fractals, etc. Just don't stress about it. Besides Agony resistance (which is solely for high level fractals), these three slots will have very little impact on gameplay or your build. I promise. If you have an Ascended ring drop for you, it's not particularly likely to have the stat distribution you want. The back pieces are on the order of mini-legendaries; good long-term goals to strive for but far out of the reach of the casual player.

No Ascended items can yet be traded on the TP, so it just really shouldn't be concerning yourself with when "gearing out" your level 80 character. Go for the exotic rings that fit your build; go for the best back piece you can find (rare ones have started to drop as of the last patch).

2. When Ascended versions of all armor pieces are released into the game, things may change a bit. My instincts are that "best-in-slot" versions of these pieces will be relatively easy to acquire, compared to the existing ascended gear and of course far, far easier than legendaries. But you will have to get them somehow to reach the new statistical ceiling.

However, that said, it's definitely worth noting that all the existing ascended pieces don't allow for traditional upgrades (runes in the case of armor), but accept only infusions. My sneaking suspicion is that one day the metagame will involve Exotic and Ascended armor sets coexisting to some degree; exotic sets offering the benefits and fun effects of full rune sets, Ascended gear offering a slight statistical advantage and protection in the fractals. This would be a great way to continue to encourage further horizontal progression within the framework of having nominally added more vertical progression to the game.

I will say that there is no way I'm giving up my rune sets. Worst case scenario is that Ascended armor is just legitimately, objectively better and does allow for runes too, in which case I'd have to "upgrade" each of my three sets to Ascended over time; probably a lot of work and gold to reach what would be a new stat ceiling. But I hope it's clear how even that would be worlds removed from the ongoing loot treadmill in other games that so many people seem to fear.

Have more than one full exotic set? Show them off!

Very cool post about the gear sets Hawk.

What sort of traits do you run for Support ? Heavy acrobatics I assume?

I'm yet to find traits that really feel great when supporting as a thief. I always end up feeling all over the place.

Thanks!

I have 15 in Acrobatics at all times. I find the 15 minor trait, Feline Grace, quite crucial for any build in my opinion unless you don't really dodge, but... how. I do often switch the 10 trait to traps recharge 20% faster on that set- because Ambush Trap means I can have an extra target, extra AoE, and crowd control up more often in the form of the extra thief. If you like this aspect you could also throw on Merciful Ambush (in Trickery) since you're going to be rezzing a lot ;)

Actually, the two traits I'd say are most important for support (of the ones I use in my typical build) are Thrill of the Crime and Bountiful Theft (which you need 20 for) in Trickery. Thrill of the Crime gives you and nearby allies fury, might, and swiftness for 10 seconds. This works even if you don't have a target to steal from- it basically turns F1 into the "boons for everybody" button. Position yourself so that allies are in range before hitting the steal. Bountiful Theft adds vigor to the boon buffet, and if you are stealing from the right target, eats two of your target's boons and gives them to you and nearby allies. Without being able to generate any boons for allies natively except regen from Shadow Refuge, you can stack up a pretty impressive number of boons on your party with these two traits.

The most important skills I'd say for running support are Cluster Bomb and Shadow Refuge. Make sure you and your party know all of the things about Shadow Refuge that are important:
1. When you first throw it down, people who stay in it get 3 seconds of regen
2. If you stay in it past those three seconds (when the field effect goes away), you can move out of the field, and have 10 full seconds of stealth. Amazing for sneaking your party past stuff.
3. It is a Dark combo field. Using projectile finishers from it will steal health from your target. Use a rapid-fire projectile if you have one.

Then there's Cluster Bomb. I actually stumbled onto the build focused on this skill during an Arah run. The key is that, the closer your character physically is to the spot the shot is targeting, the faster it will hit there. You want to constantly position yourself in combo fields so that the radius of cluster bomb covers your allies, and spam 2. 2, 2, 2, 2 in all the fields. Shadow Step can help. Regen your initiative as often as possible (steal, trait from Shadow Arts or Roll for Initiative if that's your thing). Just keep hitting the fields. The fact that the bombs are doing constant, pretty damn good AoE damage becomes a secondary bonus- it really feels that different in the support role.

Despite having no native support skills, in this build you can heal your teammates, stack huge amounts of might for the full party, bestow AoE chaos/fire/frost armors, grant retaliation and more. Just depends what your party members bring. It's a good idea when running it to ask your party members to include at least one combo field consciously if they aren't yet.

Took a much needed break during this week and now I'm feeling the itch. Anyone want to run fractals from 5 to 10 tonight?

Pretty bad for non-TP barons. 1 gold for <100 gems.

When the game first came out I pumped all my gold into Gems, to buy character slots.

Glad to see it paid off...I miss the days of 1 gold netting 450 gems.

For anyone reading the thread who hasn't picked up the game yet, the Digital Deluxe edition (which includes some one-time use items, an exclusive Rytlock mini-pet and the Mistfire Wolf elite skill) is on sale for $59.99 today online; https://buy.guildwars2.com/en/

So essentially, you're getting the $79.99 version for the price of the regular version. None of the exclusive items are worth $20, but if you're thinking about buying the game anyway you might as well get them for free now.

Nice, I'm hoping to hit 10 tonight as that's a good ending level before agony starts setting in, so I can finally work on my alts.
Agony is avoidable with skill btw :)

Also damnit. Still want that Mistfire Wolf elite for completion. Not paying 20 bucks, hahaha

Yes it is, but damn if resistance isn't helpful. Doing 10 and 11 proves to be a treat when you get clobbered with Agony haha.

Back when the gold->gem rate was still around 30s to 100gems, I bought a couple hundred gems worth of stuff, including the digital deluxe edition upgrade. First thing I did was try the elite

It sucks.

And I keep losing Rytlock to collectible convenience.

Got a tome of influence at least...

As a Mesmer, are there any better Elites for PvE than the Mistfire Wolf? Moa is single-target and the others seem to be team-oriented. Tried the Melandru one and it seems underwhelming.

...yes. Mistfire Wolf basically seems to be showy garbage.

The Melandru one is a cultural elite. That means you're human, so no help there- the human ones all seem to blow :(

Moa Morph is good if you will be fighting strong single targets as you note, but I keep Time Warp with me by default. Note that its effects apply to your Clones/Phantasms too, so it's not just a team skill. Mass Invisibility is situational but can be incredibly potent in PvE even if you're just sneaking yourself. Need to get past a dangerous area solo, Mass Invis then Veil then Decoy then The Prestige gets you quite a few options for staying hidden.

The human ones need to be changed or something. They are TOTAL garbage.

I still don't understand why they just didn't make them comparable to profession elites. I know that they didn't want people picking races because of special abilities, but damn, you can't even use them in sPVP and even in WvW it's not about the skills but more about strategy and tactics. So that makes PVE the only area of the game where they're used a lot.

I'd use the hounds of balthazar if they

A) were actually not dogs but just fire that comes from you periodically or something so it could fit any profession (more like a ranger elite than anything)

B) not on a fucking amazingly long ass cooldown

Currently as a Guardian the only really elites worth it (at least for my build) is Tome of Battle in groups sometimes, or Renewed Focus for getting my virtues back (in my virtue centric build, it's awesome, it also helps me avoid dying, etc). Tome of Support is also baller for full HP recovery.

I just feel like some of the skills in the game could use more "flash" or better design mechanically to draw people to use them and really give more choice to players rather than ones that are utterly stomping over other utilities. I have all of them unlocked except two elites and I barely use most of them.

Immobilize is godly against some bosses though, especially in Fractals.

Trying to play this again...levelling alts is WAY too painful. Are fractals at lower levels decent xp/can you actually contribute? Sitting around LFGing doesn't sound fun if I'm not going to be useful in there to level an alt anyway.

If you want faster groups, I recommend using gw2lfg.com. The site specializes in getting groups together fast. Spare me the diatribes of how the game itself should include something like this (they're working on it).

Yes, you can contribute in fractals, and you'll get drops relevant to your level as well. The XP however is kind of negligible. You'd have more XP doing regular dungeons than that. And with the increased dungeon drops, you still get good rewards now.

...For some reason, I never considered that. And I use almost only special bags. I probably can fit him into my pvp bag if I carry around less runes.

I use a safe bag to keep my minis on me! It's so much fun now that they won't get deposited, haha.

I think minis should have a chance to drop from the world enemies. It would be a lot of fun that way.

Well screw it if the xp isn't any better. bleh. I REAAALLY wish there would be stronger incentives to roll alts. Heirlooms are basically the best things ever, stupid tedious grinding :/ Makes me think a lot of Star WArs - I want to do then personal story stuff a LOT, it's the other 90% of the levelling process that blows.

Proven

It's the opposite for me. Hate the personal story. It takes much of the personality type of your character out your hands.

But when rolling a new character, there's fun. I can't just roll them into sPvP and succeed; I'm the type if person that gets choice paralyzation. And I'd jump around with builds too much, not pay attention to each and every weapon skill... I wouldn't sit still learning anything anyway.

So then I roll them in PvE/ WvW. I painstakingly sit with each weapon (including the underwater ones) for at least an hour. I think about what traits and skills I want to build for, and while I can test a lot of those things in PvP, I just stomach the trait switching price anyway. Once I get around level 30-40, I figure out what weapons I want, what grandmaster's I'll ultimately take, and which utility/armor/runes complement my playstyle most. Then the character is just a dungeon/WvW alt for when I get frustrated with one of my other characters, with quick bursts into PvP thanks to the dailies. Within a month or two, he's level 80.

I've done this with two and a half characters now, and about to start with another. I just have to decide if I want to do Wintersday with a decently leveled Ele or Engi.

You can contribute in the fractals and it is decent XP, but (obviously) it isn't enough to entirely level an alt from 1-80.

Dungeon tokens are Account Bound now, and the rewards for dungeons have been drastically increased since the days of comments like this

Having played every MMO ever, I'm pretty sure this is a grind on the Lineage level of fuckassery. Nothing you did in DAoC or AC was ever that bad. It's also the entirety of the endgame content in the game (grinding for visuals, not necessarily grinding for legendaries, which are just the royale with cheese of grinds).

This kind of shit is why other games in the west have crashed and burned. They need to either put something else in to do, or tone it down. Who wants to devote months of real life time to getting ONE item. If you're saying 'the time to raid endlessly' I suspect you will absolutely never finish one of these weapons, so saying you're ok with the grind makes no sense. You'll never get one.

Rather than have a free trial that's always on, ArenaNet has instead had Trial Weekends. Unfortunately, you just missed one which ran during the big Lost Shores event last weekend.

If you want to wait, just watch the Gaming side as we usually start new threads for the major content pushes and events. If you'd still like to give it a try, all I can suggest is that the Digital Deluxe edition (which is only deluxe in that it has useless but still kinda neat items) is on sale for the same price as the standard edition.

Most of the people who have picked it up really enjoy it, and even those who dislike it tend to find enough to say they got their $60 worth.

EU GAF kind of fell apart; there weren't enough active players to keep the already small break-away guild active. However, a lot of people have rerolled on Stormbluff Isle and report a very lag-free experience. You might want to give that a try (don't worry if you can't get onto SBI immediately, it tends to fill up quickly).

Feel free to ask any questions you want, lots of people here to answer them.
