How did you figure the lack of deformation from that one trailer? Looked pretty spot on in this comparison shot.

Looking at the feet of the old sprites.

They are kind of liefeld-ey.

I don't think it looks like SFIV at all.

Are Sol & Ky a bit bulkier? Yes, but not to the degree everyone was in SFIV. Plus, the models themselves are far more appealing aesthetically IMO.

This is why I cannot really determine if this or sf4 looks better, they are going for two radically different things.

I do like the old style better but again. THIS IS THE FIRST WE'VE SEEN OF THE GAME. Things might change along the way.

It might end up not looking as good as GGXX but I'll take a GGXrd that takes risks and invigorates the franchise than being stuck with revisions for GGXX forever.

Its not as bad as SFIV, but it most definitely takes a lot of cues from SFIV's art style and I don't like it at all. Hopefully they change it and make them closer to the original games. Even that pshop photo would be good.

The 3D lacks details for hair and small details on clothes as well on shadows on the muscles.

I can understand not being 100% happy with the transition, but this seems a little nitpicky. The outfits look just as detailed as the 2D ones and I don't think the shadow on his muscle looking different is gonna make or break the art style.

So a while ago a friend of mine found what looked to be an auction for artwork of Guilty Gear characters. I assumed it was fanart at the time, but it did look like reference sheets and such for something in production. Unfortunately the item has been taken down by the looks of it so there's no source, but I can share the (admittedly low-res) images that I do have.

Things of note: Well if these are legit Jam's confirmed, something that makes me happy. The art style does seem to be very similar to the art style used in GGXrd, so there's another point for it. Sol's outfit here though is completely different, instead based from his outfit from the GG2 short story that came out a while ago? But the symbol design matches the ones used on his gloves in the trailer, so there's another point for it. In addition, the sword looks VERY similar, many similar design choices, only looking like it's lacking an edge.

I'm not saying this is anything more than speculation and take it for a grain of salt considering there's no source, but it is interesting.

What do you guys think? I for one would be very relieved Jam is in the game. :D

Please stop reading fanfics

It was officialised in an official novel made by arc. It's one of I-no arc stories if I remember correctly, a story were Ky dies in the holy war, and sol is so mad/sad about losing him (because he loved him) that he goes nuts and everything is messed up.

Then That Man came in, asks I-no to get back into time and save Ky by actually... Beating his ass so he do not dies while fighting a Gear. Then Sol is angry or something like that.

I know this story. But you can be pissed that one of your best friends died with out it being gay. The one that goes nuts in that story btw is Dizzy not Sol

I think this looks so much better than SF4, I didn't know 3d models could look this 2D.

and lol with the "omg it's animu" now guys.

I wouldn't go that far. Street Fighter 4 is a fantastic looking game, the backgrounds are very detailed and the characters animated smoothly.

Also Guilty Gear has always looked animeish, If you take it away it wouldn't be Guilty Gear. That's why those 3D models amaze us.

I agree that some of the changes take away from the original aesthetic, but transitioning into a 3D engine for what is essentially a 2D fighter will inevitably lead to some compromises. That being said, for a first attempt, Arc System Works has done really well.

My only gripe with your arguments is that some of your points stress that it's too anime, but Guilty Gear has been wildly Japanese in style since its inception. The tropes have been there from the start: just look at Bridget.

The deformations and silhouettes I can agree on; Sol's arms have been bulked up way too considerably and they take away from his original form for example.

Yeah and I don't see how a character taking the death of his friend hard is proof that the other was a frustrated closet gay. lol

Yeah and Dizzy went crazy from another event that happened later in that timeline IIRC. (The death of Justice)

I think Ky just makes Sol the leader of the Order before dying or something

It looks the same to me. In fact, some of those frames have his arms bigger than what the 3d model represents. The game looks amazing so far, and I hope that a few fanatical comments don't derail the designs they've gone with. It doesn't matter what they go with; people are always going to complain about art direction.

They've done an amazing job capturing the 2d game play with the Unreal Engine. Really hope this gets Steam release. I want to see this downscaled from 4k.

This might make me get a console if it's console only. I definitely don't want to go that route.

This is how 3D 2D-plane fighters should look like. Sure it's not on the level of great 2d sprites, but it's levels above what capcom is doing. Everything looks great so far. I hope we see Jam soon

It's probably because Sol didn't say "No homo" after his revenge.

The one storyline related question I have is this: will Ky finally do something of interest?
He's one of the most popular, prominent characters but everyone overshadows him.

Well Capcom has finally nailed 2D to 3D conversion with Ace Attorney 5, so hopefully that will bleed into their fighting games now too.

Another comparation :

Indeed the third one is better...
It's pretty obvious that they bulked him up something fierce, guys. They definitely gotta tone them shoulders down a tiny bit. Kudos to Arc nonetheless. Sol would look absolutely fucking perfect if he stopped using steroids.

Still can't wait to see Baiken, Jam, Pot(holy shit) and Eddie in action.

He's popular because he's pretty.

I'm not complaining. I think it's totally within character for him to be that way.

Plus, as I mentioned before, the graphic style of this game totally suits the new designs of the characters. I'm very pleased with the look of the game so far.

I do not think that they are comparable. Street fighter 4 and Mahvel have heavy western influences on their art style. Despite street fighter 4's having the Japanese water paint motif.

This is more eastern , anime kind of thing.

Neither one is bad, I don't really think this better than marvel or street fighter . Just different.

There isn't any technological argument to really be had here.

Showed this video to my child hood friend over Skype and he actually started getting tears. Said it made him remember when we were teenagers playing Guilty Gear religiously on PSX. Pretty sure he's getting it day one.

This is actually the same kinda response I had. Legit nostalgia blast.

After watching the trailer a few more times...I take what I said back, game looks legit.

If they made Sol less bulky though it would be perfect. Millia and Eddie looked absolutely spot on.

Eh, I think it's excessive with Sol in particular. Millia looked great and Ky looked pretty good for the most part.

The same exact way my cousin reacted lol.
Wonder if they'll go VN style for the story mode like in Blazblue. Although I imagine with the 3D models that might enable them to do a bit more with the presentation.
These models are amazing. It'd be a real waste if they didn't get story mode use. If this were next gen it'd be ASW's chance to actually nail some first month six digit figures in America. I honestly don't know of any fighting games besides Capcom, Netherrealm and Namco ones that hit that target.

Haha, ArcSys/Aksys does not have the marketing money for that to happen.

I said six digits, not seven. Put up a five minute short of Sol walking around and talking with the cast live and I guarantee it'd actually show up on the NPD charts for once. I ain't talking 600k Injustice prep time sales here lol.

How would this appeal to anyone beyond those already into the franchise?
It's possible it hits 6 figures eventually, like BlazBlue, but there's no way that's happening in 1 month.

Actually, the VN style was used quite a bit throughout the GG series as it is. Starting with a very early trial with the GGX+ port for PS2, and more in XX and AC+.

So, if anything, I can just imagine them possibly doing more with what they already started.

Considering the original Guilty Gears had story modes that were essentially a fixed Arcade mode with persudo-VN dialogue in between, I can't see why not. Then again, with the move to 3D models, I'd like to see some MK9 style cut-scenes in the mix.

Yep, I have no issues with the way either character is portrayed right now.

I can't be the only guy who noticed Milia's gigantic calf muscles. Those things are gorgeous. Damn, I really like her model aside from the pointy ass anime chin.

Six figures is not a million units, man. It's not that hard to break into that 100k zone once you go 3D like they have. It's a MAJOR wall to some people who just DON'T want play 2D games.

It's not that hard to get.

BlazBlue hasn't broken a million in the US, I know 6 figures isn't a million.
It's still a very difficult hurdle.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 couldn't break 6 figures.
