Gun and THPS Review (IGN)

In actually reading both reviews, I fial to see exactly why either game warrants a purchase on the X-Box 360.

Well, I don't feel that either warrants a purchase period...BUT I believe they were created for those who are already going to purchase an XBOX360 and would like to play these titles.

If you are already going to buy a 360, why not play the best versions of the games?

alternatively - why encourage companies to believe that they can get away with producing shovelware ports to next generation hardware and charge a premium for them by purchasing either game?

Fair enough, but I dunno, it is just a bit too much like the Dreamcast way of thinking (ports of PSOne/PC games onto the system with little to no alteration.) for my tastes.

I totally agree.

In fact, this is one of my biggest problems with the XBOX360. Microsoft seems perfectly content with allowing developers to essentially release "current gen" games with 720p support. They also don't seem to give a shit about framerate.

It's as if they want support so badly that they are willing to accept ANYTHING. This is BAD for us. Very bad.

As far as launches go, you have no right to complain. This launch is pretty much the best yet.

For the sake of your future, never tell this place that they don't have the right to complain about anything.

Depends on who you ask. As I see it, there's PGR3, RR6... maybe Condemned?

Feels like the PSP launch was better. Maybe not if you throw the Live Arcade titles into the equation...

Seriously?

I'm still thinking the PSP (US) lineup was better.

It's always easy to call something "the best ever" when you're excited for it, but I don't think this one is going to stand out in the long run. It could have been, at one point, but I don't think it will be now...

I dont factor handhelds as consoles, thats a different genre all together for me. But i am serious when it comes to the quality of the launch lineup. I wont throw stones, but their have been some shithouse launches in my 15 years of gamming.

I cant get past the dispertion that just because a game isnt someones cup of tea they knock it. Quality game is a quality game, who cares if you dont like the art, the character, the genre - it doesnt make it crap. Why cant people move on and say its just not for me.

For the sake of your future, never tell this place that they don't have the right to complain about anything.

My future isnt worth worrying about.

But i am serious when it comes to the quality of the launch lineup
OK, if you're that serious, could you explain why? What makes this launch so special?

I'm seeing a decent sized selection of titles of varying quality with none of them truly standing out as AAA. I'd go so far as to say that the original XBOX launch was better.

Yes, but you'd go as far as needed to troll the 360 across the entire forum. :D

And?

It's not as if I'm doing it just for kicks or for some stupid fanboy reason. I have legimate issues with the thing, despite the fact that I've had mine paid off for months now and plan on buying a decent number of the games launching alongside it. I'm excited about the system, no doubt, but it is not moving in the direction I wanted next-gen to go.

As was the Dreamcast's, Gamecube's and PS2's really (IMHO). When the star attraction is a sequel to a N64 game which was a spirtual successor to another N64 game, but wasn't as good....

But hey, I'm amazed that PD0 is even coming out... I was sure that it would be delayed somehow, but I guess that fate went to DOA4, which is a shame,

You guys are nuts.

Other than Halo, name one good game missing from this launch that was in the original one. We have Amped, PGR, plus tons of sports, heck even a Ridge Racer game, which was supposedly TEH KILLER APP of the PSP launch.

No, when your best title is a puzzle game and most of the rest offer experiences you could have had in 2001, the launch isn't that exciting. Not to mention that the PSP launch delivered 7 fewer games than originally promised.

The N64 launch had ONE game. Saying any launch is worse than that is just insane. No variety = Nothing to play = Well, why the Nintendo 64 sold what it did.

The PS2 and Dreamcast launches I'll give you, because there were simply more games and more variety, but the quality present in this launch is very high. The worst games are 7's, no Azuriks or Fantavisions.

PGR3 is AAA. There's your AAA title.

Oh, and the US Gamecube launch was HORRIBLE.

Rogue Leader, Waverace, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Monkey Ball. Super Monkey Ball is the only game I'd play for more than a few minutes, and it's just a B-grade game, let's be honest.

Wrizzong. It had SM64 and Pilotwings 64.

As for GameCube launch, you forgot Tony Hawk 3, which was definitely a big deal, as was Rogue Leader, which I guess is not to your taste but actually almost outsold Luigi's Mansion, which is itself a fun game but certainly not a classic. Waverace is technically outstanding, impressive even today in some respects, and it helped fill in for the hardcore crowd.

It took me about 5 but the story mode is only one part of the game. Classic mode is about the same length (4-5 hours) Multiplayer and especially online is the REAL bulk of the game though, IMO.

Slightly OT, But DO NOT trust any review of TH:AW that does not complain of it's length (3 HOURS!!!).

3 hours! WTF?!?! How long did it take you to beat the other Tony Hawk games?

I'm really not that good at them so I'm wondering if your three hours is going to translate into a somewhat longer playtime for me :)

I beat both in 3 hours. It's just that, I expected it to be as long as THUG2, which was quite long. (not big on multiplayer)

It is if you're not a TH veteran.
First times- THPS: 7HRS THPS2: ~11HRS THPS3: 10HRS THPS4: 25HRS THUG: 17HRS(Sick) THUG2: 33HRS (Both modes, Sick) THAW 3HRS (Both modes, Sick)
I recently had a 24HR marathon where I did ALL goals up until THAW successfully within the 24HR limit!

rented Gun for the PS2...I'd say they gave it too high of a score...the game really isn't that good IMO

Don't worry, Neversoft will have the formula nailed by the time we see Gun 7: Western Wasteland in 2010.

QFT

for me the launch line-up sucks as I am not into racing games. I was looking most foward to Kameo, and Perfect Dark, but neither of them looks to be that kiler app I hoped they'd be. I'll take one Halo over this stuff any day.

I think a lot of people could very easily argue that Halo by itself would be enough to put the original Xbox launch above that of the 360. But since you seem eager to shrug off that glaring omission I'll go ahead and name another series that's missing from launch. DOA.

As for RR. One of the reasons RR was a killer ap for PSP was because it looked damn good for a handheld game. Heck it'd even look good if it was a PS2 game. RR6 for the 360 is much less impressive. PGR3 wipes the floor with it visually and gameplay wise, judging from what others have said, it is essentially a remix of the PSP version that shipped almost a year ago.

Dark just has bad taste in most games (MGS2) and has a habit of pointing out useless details to justify his hint of sony bias, but he is definately not a troll.
