Gungho America asks about porting classic games to PC (Lunar, Grandia, etc.)

Awesome that GungHo's doing this!

I voted for Thexder. Really, though, I want Thexder Neo, the remake of the original that more people would play rather than an old DOS or PC-88 game that brutalizes you from the start. If that's not in the frame due to Square Enix being the publisher, then oh well, but any Thexder games would do well on GOG and Steam just through word-of-mouth. Everyone's suggestions for Grandia, Lunar, Alisia Dragoon, and Gungriffon are equally as valid; I feel there's an older audience GungHo can attract by bringing Thexder (not the Sierra version, just the Game Arts original) onto digital marketplaces.

All of the Lunar games, all over my face.

Honestly, I would especially love Eternal Blue to go out on PC. I've beaten Lunar several times, but I got to the last boss in Eternal Blue and could never beat him.

I hope the older audience and fans are receptive to the idea!
The major obstacle to getting Thexder available via emulation, from my understanding, is licensing a PC-8801 emulator and getting NEC's permission to package that for modern Windows OSes + OS X via some kind of WINE + Linux using .tar packages. Costs of licensing the Sierra localization (owned now by Activision) would be something enough to deter GungHo, I fear. Using the PC-8801 version would be smart also because so few in West have played the original, which performs better than its ports and has FM-synth music. I hope you can forward this consideration for us!

I think it'd probably be cheaper to re-localise it then going through activision, not like there's much text.

Only question is whether Game Arts still have the source, but I guess even if they don't hacking would still probably be cheaper.

There's no text to translate as far as I know. I just laid out the alternative to licensing from Activison in case that ends up being pricier (or if Activision simply doesn't want to do it).

Don't remember about Thexder 1, but Thexder 2 definitely has text to translate. I'd definitely be in favor of a new localization (if I'm not mistaken, the Sierra Online version downplayed the anime/manga vibe).

LOL. Did he sell it while you had the game in possession?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes he did, Late nights wasted on a whim of him, then again it was his game. Lol

The sister of this very same cousin sat on one of my games and broke it (case and disk) can't remember which game it was though .

Huh. I remember that Broderbund's localization of WiBARM, another game like Thexder 1 that introduced dungeon crawling and some anime-based presentation, was faithful. That era of Japanese PC localization was an oddity for sure.

Glad to see it coming. Hope the port is good... oh geeze guys please let the port be good!

-gets ready to throw his terrible port ps2 copy off a bridge!-

Shame I missed out on the survey, but great news regarding Grandia II. I'll buy pretty much anything with Grandia or Lunar in the title (which my copies of Grandia III and Dragon Song in particular will stupidly attest to). Lunar isn't the same without the WD translation but I'll take what I can get.

Well I wasn't expecting an announcement so soon. So this is pretty great news. will be there day one for Grandia II. Hopefully it sells well enough to encourage more ports.

It took me way too long to realise this was an old thread. I kept clicking the link in the OP and wondering why it was taking me to GungHo's website rather than the survey...

"With the rise of digital downloads, it is especially important that classic games continue to remain available to play in some form," said president of GungHo America Jun Iwasaki.

Smart guy. Hope this is a success for them and more games get ported.

Are they just going to dump the original botched PC port onto Steam, or are they going to re-do the port to bring it up to the DC version's standards?

PS I'm kind of disappointed, never really liked Grandia 2 mainly due to it having the most annoying protagonist in history.

The article says it's the DC version. And I loved G2's protagonist, he was a glorious bastard.

Dunno whether it was the translators having fun or the original script, but Ryudo filled the burn centers

Man: Look, it's a hard and fast rule: no passengers on the Skyway! There's profit in freighting cargo, not tourists.

Well, Roan should have no problem boarding. He's baggage.
