Gwent - Open Beta Thread: Not bad, not bad at all

Starting to click now about 6 hours in. Played in TW3 but not the CB. Decided to main Nilfgaard since it sounds like milf.

I'm sure I'll get countered at higher levels but deck seems super OP. With hero power plus gold guy that copies hero power plus decoy I can bounce resilience twice in first round pretty easily or if I dont I can Bounce/play 4 plus bloody cows in round 2. Seems OP???

Nilfgaard is a pretty nasty deck if you know what you're doing.

You will get countered pretty easily. I'm playing that starter deck (+swapped neutral lock guy for faction lock guy and those two spies for two more clear skies).

I really should get a proper deck eventually...

I am so salty right now over Rot Tosser. I mean WTF it has 6 STR so usually you can only kill it after 2 turns.

By the time I try to kill it, his cow either kills me or they re-summon it again

That card has to be 3 or 4 STR at the most or give it a timer that it tosses a cow after a turn or something. Thankfully this is a beta and I am sure there will be a big update for all cards in the game soon

I just lost a game because a guy used Rot Tosser 3 times in a row and annihilated me in the last round :(

Has anyone noticed that the game is more buggy now? Like playing cards and them not triggering other stuff like Roach etc?

Yea I noticed some weird things happening as well. I am also getting PS4 error and game freezing more frequently

Why are you trying to kill the rot tosser? The cow is what you need to worry about.

Yea I know but I wanted to kill the rot tosser before he could resummon him again but his str is too high to do it in 1 turn :\

I have won against rot tossers before, but that is one of my most hated nilfgaard cards atm

Do you run any locks or decoys on your deck? Cows are pretty easy to counter or just work around.

Been experimenting with a ST deck that makes use of the positioning mechanic .. it's interesting.

Dude, the synergy between cards is INSANE. Maybe it's just me, but I am loving this far more than the original game. I've never played a card game before Gwent in Witcher 3, so all these cards and synergies is blowing me away. I'm only playing Nilfgaard against AI challenges, but I can't wait to dive into other factions.

I made a really dumb Northern Realms deck that is "kinda" meant to counter weather by buffing up and playing a Prize Winning Cow in Frost. Every tick of the Frost spawns a new Chort. But its got enough going for it that it works against other decks as well.

Cows have tons of counters. The easiest, that's available to any deck: just drop a low strength card on that row as a sacrifice. It only attacks the weakest units on that row. Something weak with a single deploy ability works well.

Locking, attacking the cow directly, moving the cow to another row, removing your units (or the cow itself) and redrawing them on another row, etc. Worse comes to worst, you can just treat them like weather spam and write off the round with a pass.

Bloodcurdling Roar turns the Carcass into a 12 strength bronze.

Rot Tossers were infinitely worse in Closed Beta when you only had one turn to try and handle it.

Does anyone have a suggested defense against boosted Nekkers? They're a monster (pun fully intended) with Deathwish...

Mardrome or whatever that mushroom card is. If you decrease base strength to 0, the card is banished instead of dying so it doesn't trigger its effect. Also, locking them.

man i wasn't too into the closed beta but picking it back up on the open beta and its got its hooks in me right away. Def. a more refined version than before.

Part of me wishes they would go update Witcher 3's Gwent to match the current version (or a mod to do it) when i make my eventual replay of Witcher 3

Yeah, on my second playthrough Gwent has been feeling like a slog. Not only because I understood how to break it on my first playthrough, but also because being spoilt by the stand alone version. It's a bummer too since I'd like to gather all the cards in W3.

Yeah, I started working on the expansions the last couple of weeks and it's so simplistic it's impossible to lose.

Got to say that SK Queensguard is more ridiculous than any weather complaints.

It has such a huge counter though. If you are going against it a lot, invest in the necromancy card it's a silver card but it's rarely dead and absolutely destroys queensguard.

No there's tons of counters for queensguard, have you played against SCO weather with Ithlinne? They just spam weather with epidemic and you literally cant play shit. Then they just drop power 15+ dol blathana protectors.

It's the epitome of a cancer deck.

I'm only 8 or so hours in but this has been a lot of fun
getting my ass kicked in MP though

any viable deck recommendation early on? My Northern Realms one just isn't making it

Finally got my first gold selection after around 30 kegs. Had the choice between another standard Geralt, some SK guy and Bloody Baron. I took the Baron.

Funny enough. I played against that last night. Who came up with that idea?

I can't beat the very first tutorial match. :/ Think I'll give this a miss. Pity because I absolutely loved Gwent in Witcher 3.

Edit: Thought I'd try the practice AI and got absolutely demolished. Not sure what I'm doing wrong when even the practice mode and initial challenges are much, much too difficult.

Are you reading what all the cards do? They are more than just the number in the corner.

When does the beta end?

No word on it, doesn't matter, think of this as an early access release. All progress just rolls on from here.

I wouldn't recommend going against the practice AI (Turing Machine) as it plays on a very aggressive tempo.

It's best to do Challenges and Casual matches until you feel comfortable with the gameplay mechanics.

I actually started playing against the AI because I found the challenges too rough. I played Gwent loads in Witcher 3 so I understand how it's supposed to work, but it feels like I'm getting steamrolled despite my best efforts. I'll give it another bash tomorrow but it's not started out with a very good first impression.

Yea I actually do. I have the demetrium shackles and the dwarf that locks abilities. It was just unfortunate that that round they didn't come up for me.

I think a better counter for rot tosser is using decoy on it and throwing it back at them. The only problem is that usually when I play against nilfgaard they have a ton of spy cards and just resummon the rot tosser again when I do that and it goes back and forth like that until one of us runs out of cards :P

My faction is sociatel and I usually have it easy against monsters and northern realms, but my #1 problem is nilfgaard. I am sure that once I have better cards it will make things easier for me. I am 25 scraps from getting a new gold card!

What you might want to do is add a bloodcurdling roar or two to your deck. You want to save your locks, decoy's for your own combos and to stop your opponent from creating a big with resilience.

Roar will give you maximum value in those situations, killing the spy or carcass and creating a big of your own. It's a good card even if your not playing against nilf as you can sacrifice a low unit for an instant big.

Sco weather with epidemic is so much nastier than monster weather.

Decided to give it a try in Casual for the first time .. and played a mirror match against an ST running a variation of the same deck. I laughed..

I feel dirty playing it though... like players who played Consume Monsters during Closed Beta.

The actual rot tosser card is not the real issue I face, it's the fact that every nilfgaard deck I play against they have 3 of them and then either use decoy or that nilf medic card and keep reusing it over and over. I think if that card had a STR of 3 instead of 6 it would solve the issues with that card

Also can someone explain this card for me? Vrihedd Brigade

Promote this Unit when you play a Weather card.

I know promotion means that the card becomes gold, but I swear I also saw someone use it to move units around the board. Was I seeing things or does the card do something else beside becoming a gold card?

Consume monsters wasn't the dirty one, PFI buffing was the real cheese deck of closed beta.

There is nothing wrong with tosser

The nilf medic is a neutral. In fact, you can use rot tosser against Nilf decks if u carry it since it pulls from opponent graveyard

There are tons of rot counters. If u have one, its also better to wait until the next turn to trick them

Yeah, the description for this card is wrong.
I put it into a weather deck and it didn't promote at all, just moved around another character.

I'm getting a "Servers are busy, try again later" error?

I'm one round away from completing my win 12 rounds rewards T_T

Only barely reached level 8 (I'm trying to not play beyond the win 12 rounds reward), I guess I'll start playing Ranked next week. Matchmaking in casual is definitely getting rough though, I'm running into opponents who aren't level 10 yet but have swagged out borders/titles from closed beta ladder position.
