Haha! Creative CEO calls iPod shuffle, "... worse than the cheapest Chinese player."

hey Josh, did some googling for the JumpGear and it doesn't look too hot. There have been reported problems with the headphone jack becoming loose (either coming off entirely, or diminishing sound quality) and the features it does have are pretty crappy. The randomizer is borked in that pressing NEXT in random mode doesn't go to the next random song, it goes to the next song. And every time you turn off/on the player it starts from the first song, i.e. no resume function.

"is that all you got?"

I'm sorry, I don't really have much desire to waste effort on you. Maybe when you're able to post a compelling, coherent post that doesn't contradict your own actions. I'll spare you the cliche` expressions.

First impressions mean a lot. The first thing that the public saw from Creative wasn't very good- I think we can all agree on this point. Creative has been very, very spontaneous on GOOD mp3 players, and the public has seen this. Take the iPod, on the other hand. Over a period of, what, four years Apple has made the iPod a household name, synonymous with mp3 player. People buy on reliance, something that Apple has a surplus of and something that Creative sorely lacks.

Also, many more-conscious consumers might hear this baseless ad hominem attack on Apple and see Creative as a bitter company getting in a few shots as they lose the battle.

It goes both ways...I was interested in seeing what Shuffle had to offer when I first heard about it, and was so dumbfounded by the finished product that I still have a hard time believing it. Come to think about it, I was pretty disppointed in Mini iPod as well when that got announced, based on the previous rumours. Still doesn't mean I think the brand sucks...but Shuffle is just a joke.

The thing is, the design of the Shuffle is based on how many people USE iPods. The idea is that you pick some songs for the day ahead in iTunes, put them on your Shuffle, and press play & ignore the player. Next day, you pick some different songs & repeat the process.

The Shuffle represents a product marketed at a particular way of listening to music -- which people actually do, even if the naysayers here don't. It's kind of like an extension of iTunes. If you don't "get it", it's clearly not the product for you. Of course Apple also offers iPod mini and the larger iPods for people who do want more control.

If the niche that Apple is targeting with the Shuffle is too small, they won't sell any of the devices and you can bet the next generation has a display. But you know, I have a feeling that's not going to be necessary.

And remember all the complaints about the iPod mini when it was introduced, and yet it went on to be an absolutely HUGE seller. I don't see the Shuffle being any different.

And now I predict Willco will come in dismiss this post as "damage control". ;)

Fuck. My friend is in SF and I told him to pick up one for me, along with the neckstrap, but they were nowhere to be found.

The initial shipments have sold out and more are coming, but you may just want to order from Apple's online store if there's not a physical one nearby or if you don't want to hassle them about when they're going to get more. The lanyard comes with the Shuffle by the way.

Look, when I'm running through my jam-packed daily routine, I don't have time to do any of that fancy "playlist making" or "looking at a screen" or "selecting a song", or whatever other useless features you want to recommend for $5 more!
:lol

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to these sorts of gadgets. I've never been interested in them, though recently I've become tired of my CD player. After reading this thread, I'm strongly considering getting the Creative Muvo Micro N200. It looks good enough and seems to be a great value. The only problem is that I have to compete the additional features against the potential that people will think I'm less cool. :\ But I'm going to check out how expensive it is in Canada. Hopefully it's around $150.

Apple Store: up to 4-wk backorder on iPod shuffle

The Apple Store is quoting a four-week wait on some models of the iPod shuffle. CNN reports that "there is a two- to three-week wait for the $99 iPod Shuffle, which holds about 120 songs, while customers face a wait of three to four weeks for the $149 model, which has double the capacity," while all other models of the iPod are estimated to ship on the same (business) day as the order is placed. Earlier this month, Taiwan manufacturer Asustek said it expects to reach 400,000 to 500,000 units a month, due to the aggressive pricing and brand recognition for Apple's iPod music players.

That was all a long-winded way of excusing Shuffle from giving people a basic choice. It isn't like people wouldn't be able to Shuffle their music if a screen was included.

Hell, what if you're gone for a week? Can't do much to change the tunes around then. Oh wait, I guess you'd have to buy a MiniMac and bring that around with you. :lol Genius move on Apple's part now that I think about it. Seriously, just give me the choice...charge another 30 bucks more for a screen model, I don't care. I don't want or need a bigger model, because the idea of carrying $300 to $400 worth of hardware in my pocket (save for the priceless model between my legs) simply doesn't sit well with me. Too many things can happen...get damaged, get lost, get stolen, whatever.

A 1 to 2 gig model with a screen...really don't think that's asking much. Bet a version like that gets introduced within a year as well...which will then be heralded by people like you as a reason for people like me to quit whining, after spending so much time arguing it wasn't neccessary to begin with. :lol

Hang out with Steve.
But they DO give you a choice:

iPod Shuffle 512K: $99
iPod Shuffle 1GB: $149
iPod Mini 4GB: $249
iPod 20GB: $299
iPod U2 Edition 20GB: $349
iPod 40GB: $399
iPod Photo 40GB: $499
iPod Photo 60GB: $599

and every single one of them works just as well on a PC as it does on a Mac. Obviously, if you can't find something that suits your needs in that range of products, you're not going to be buying an iPod...

don't know what you and tre have against each other, but there's a difference between buying overpriced products that also happen to be either feature rich or high quality, and buying overpriced products that happen to be either lacking features or low quality. Kind of like spending $30,000 on a Volkswagon rather than spending that same $30,000 on a Lexus.

You know exactly what I mean...any model offered should be able to let someone find what they want to play at a moments notice and without fuss.
