The thing is, the design of the Shuffle is based on how many people USE iPods. The idea is that you pick some songs for the day ahead in iTunes, put them on your Shuffle, and press play & ignore the player. Next day, you pick some different songs & repeat the process.
The Shuffle represents a product marketed at a particular way of listening to music -- which people actually do, even if the naysayers here don't. It's kind of like an extension of iTunes. If you don't "get it", it's clearly not the product for you. Of course Apple also offers iPod mini and the larger iPods for people who do want more control.
If the niche that Apple is targeting with the Shuffle is too small, they won't sell any of the devices and you can bet the next generation has a display. But you know, I have a feeling that's not going to be necessary.
And remember all the complaints about the iPod mini when it was introduced, and yet it went on to be an absolutely HUGE seller. I don't see the Shuffle being any different.
And now I predict Willco will come in dismiss this post as "damage control".
