Halo 2 still the biggest this Gen - Media Create reports on DQVIII

The distinction between "sold" and "sold through" is rarely ever made by the press....and is pretty often glossed over in company PR or financial reports. I took that section of the article to be pretty inconclusive, particularly with the sub-headline specifically saying "shipped" and specifically mentioning the Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Microsoft Game Studios today announced that the highly-anticipated game sold through 2.4 million units in the U.S. and Canada, driving cash register receipts to the $125 million mark.

Seriously, wait for NPD numbers. If Halo 2 only did 2.3m or something for the whole of November according to NPD I'm gonna laugh!!

It is inconclusive, but you posted it as though it was proof that the 2.38 million figure was shipped and not sold. :) When in reality, it was most likely a simple misprint in the headline... it's the only reference to 2.38 million shipped online, and it's inconsistent with the body text of the article it prefaces, as well as any Seattle Post-Intelligencer article about Halo 2's sales.

Virtually every other reference to the 2.38 million figure specifically mentions sales, nothing about shipped numbers.

Regardless, the only number we have is from Microsoft, which is true of every single first day number we've ever gotten. The retail tracking sytems report weekly in Japan, weekly in the UK, and monthly in the US (although, it used to be weekly up until the end of March 2002 in the US).

If we took Squares, Nintendos, EA's, or Sony's numbers, we have to take Microsoft's as well.

November NPD won't prove or disprove Microsoft assertions and they are essentially guaranteed of having over 2.5 million units sold for November in the US (probably over 3 million easily, and it could be much, much more), which is so far past the number of units sold is a single month that it isn't even funny.

Biggest selling initial months for games this gen (US NPD)

GTA:SA 2,053,983
Madden 2004 (PS2) 1,445,950
GTA: VC 1,412,429 (although second & third month were 1,452,729 & 1,581,519)
Madden 2005 (PS2) 1,112,588
MADDEN NFL 2003 (PS2) 930,329
ZELDA: THE WIND WAKER 826,352
DRAGONBALL Z: BUDOKAI 787,173

Hmmmm... an "initial month" can be anything from 2-3 days to 31 days though.

GTA:VC would have done upto 2.5m in it's first 3 weeks. I'd be suprised if Halo 2 did more than that according to MC.

By the way, you forgot GBA Pokemon games first week numbers...

Lolz, comparing first day sales and ignoring total sales is like playing a fighting game and getting owned round after round and then declaring "HEY GUYS! I STILL ALWAYS SCORE THE FIRST HIT!" :lol

1) Given that GTA:VC didn't crack 3 million after the end of November, and that included 2 weekends after Thanksgiving, I'm pretty sure it wasn't at 2.5 million in it's first 3 weeks.

2) No. I didn't forget GBA Pokemon numbers. They just didn't quite make my cutoff ;)

POKEMON SAPPHIRE 585,098
