Probably because servers, playlists and possible ranking systems are still tweaked and are easy to patch.

Actually, Reach went a whole year without being patched. Which is pretty unheard of for an online focussed game. The only reason it eventually got a patch was to change the reticle bloom. I expect Halo 4 to be as equally solid on day 1.

Lots of people complained about that actually... Vanilla Reach was/is pretty terrible IMO. It needed that patch badly. The reason why it took so long is because of the transition from Bungie to 343. 343 made and implemented the title update.
Hopefully Halo 4 does not have anything resembling the problems of Reach when it first launched.

The only Halo game I've ever played through was 3, and I never touched it again -- I didn't even want to -- after co-op'ing through it once. Has there been any consensus on if 4's, well, better? I can't put my finger on what turned me off about 3... If I had to spitball it, I didn't care about the characters, too many enemies were bullet sponges, and the narrative was weak.

The characters (besides chief and cortana) and narrative will probably be quite different. However if you didn't enjoy the core gameplay it probably means the series isn't for you (nothing wrong with that, can't like every franchise).

I don't see what you're talking about in the picture or the video. The smoke is semi-transparent and the environment behind the smoke is lit in blue, so maybe that's what you're talking about.
