You could probably fit a third to half of "The Silent Cartographer" into the Battle of The Citadel.
I never finished CEA. So that noted, I did think a lot of the art was a turn for the worse. Two examples are the way dark areas (such as the light bridge area of the second mission) were brightened up to the point where you could see the whole space clearly, no flashlight needed. Totally robbed the scene of the atmosphere it held. And a lot of detailed ornamental texture work (most notably on Silent Cartographer) was replaced with simple repeating hexagons.

Later things like the removal of fog on 343 Guilty Spark hurt the rich atmosphere Bungie created as well.

Now as you said this stuff is very subjective. A lot of people liked those changes. But they are ones that for me at least were a big step back. I played many sections with the original graphics instead, which to be fair is a great feature.
Night doesn't look like night, too. Two Betrayals felt like you were still fighting in the daylight.

I wish it didn't take like 50 hours to get past the "intro" segment of new Zelda games

That WAS a huge drawback to Skyward Sword. I'm going to be really conflicted when the new Zelda game eventually comes out for WiiU...I may end up buying a system just for it.

You don't need lots of vehicles for them to be big. Look at what Halo and Silent Cartographer were in CE. Huge, expansive areas that allowed players to do whatever they wanted.
True. Still, Halo 3 had an equal amount or more big levels than Halo CE (depending on how you see the "Halo" level of Halo 3 - is it big or not. Personally, since there is no expansive area to roam about, I think it's small)

Halo CE small:
- Pillar of Autumn
- The Library
- Keyes
- The Maw
- 343 Guilty Spark

Halo CE big:
- Halo
- Silent Cartographer
- AotCR
- Two Betrayals

Sometimes, when the light is right, you can mutter Urk's name in this thread and he'll show up.

That is...if you believe the rumors are true...
Butt conversation brings in the urk. Notice that the last time he posted here was the butt chugging night.

So having played through all the Zelda games I own and since we're in the Zelda cycle of the thread right now, what do you folks who like 3D Zeldas actually enjoy about the games? What is it that makes it special, and stand out from games in general?

I cannot stomach the idea of the intro segments being that long, despite the fact that I'd probably like what comes after them

WAIT WHAT

A sequel to the FPS version?

You are a terrible, terrible person.

Although funny moment in one of the kickstarter videos they have the guy who worked on the FPS apologize for it.

Shadowrun Returns, think of it like X-Com but with the Shadowrun skin and magic. but for Ipad/Iphones/PC, with a mission editor (which X-com Unknown Enemy should defintely add)

Also Shadowrun Online is being worked on which is going to be an online free to play buy to get stuff model game. Which might be really interesting.

Well yea we don't exactly know why that drop off occurred. No one does. You can't go to those that stopped playing and say, "Hi! Why did you stop playing Halo 4?" I'm sure a lot of people just moved on. Probably happens with every game.

Well, I know this is just anecdotal, but in the case of many people on my friends list it happened because of awful lag, long matchmaking times, and many of the same poor design choices (random ordnance, instant respawns/bad spawning, poor weapon balance/exploits) that have been crowed about on these forums since day one.

Where did these people go? COD, of course. Which has seen so such population drop in its first month after release. And these are not fairweather Halo fans. Many of these guys played H2 and H3 with me through their entire lifespans. These guys want a great Halo game to play, generally loved 2 and 3, hated Reach, and aren't liking 4 much better.

Now, again, I know this is anecdotal evidence based on a dozen or so people on my friends list who I talk to several times a week, but I don't think I'm totally alone here, either.

So I used to post a lot in the Halo 3 thread, what happened to so many of those regular posters like Cocopjojo, Tieno, Mr. Vociferous, godhandiscen, op_ivy, SpudBud, Buttonbasher etc.

Are they just not into Halo so much anymore? And forgive me if any of those dudes do actually post here and I just never noticed :p

We also never see urk or LukeSmith or any other Bungie dudes posting here anymore. I'm sure they're busy but still...

i'm here and post about as frequently as ever. downergaf gets me down, so post halo 4 this community thread is a bit hard to bare.... but i'm still here

Can I join the "jellis of heckfu's weather" movement? This is fucking insane. End of the world confirmed.

You know iv never got this. CE:A looked great the art style was really good in my opinion and I had no quarms with the soundtrack.

I kind of understand what people mean when they say it looks different but I'd never say worse just different.

CE has faults and for w.e reason people are less quick to jump on It because of them.

A lot of it is personal preference however
I like the art direction of the original better in most levels. Most of the redesigned environments were a bit overdone and were a mess compared to the clean look of the original. Wasn't a bit fan of most of the character and vehicle models they ripped previous Halos either.
The Library looks a lot better, though. Also, finally being able to use Bumper Jumper in Halo 1 is a godsend.
Wait so what exactly is wrong with Halo 4?

Oh yea, no doubt some people just think the game sucks. We just can't say for sure.

It's a serious question. What did the game ship with or not ship with that makes it so bad? It seems a unanimous opinion, but I can't find specifics on why it's bad.
Off the top of my head I think the gist of it seems like the AAs returning, ordnance in general, CoDifying with loadouts (and weapons like boltshot within them) and perks and what have yous, map design, split screen performance, DMR dominance, stuff like that.

I love me some Halo, but this HaloGAF isn't the same HaloGAF. 2007-2010 was pretty awesome though.

Glad to see you guys still here, along with Ghal and Dax and a few others I remember from 2007.

It was indeed a totally different HaloGaf back then. I dropped out during the Reach days because I just wasn't a huge fan of that game, but Halo 4 has really reignited my interest in the series. Looking back though, the period just before Halo 3 and just after release was probably the most exciting time I've had in the series. Forge, file sharing, theater, being on the "new" Xbox, etc...it was just awesome.

Game has strong potential, but small issues make the game a lot worse than it is. A lot of older fans are turned off too.

Here's some gripes with the game, do note that NOT everyone feels the same way for certain issue:

Game Announcements (Multikills, Sprees, etc.) Are Not Made In Theatre Clips
-When you create a clip from a full film, the announcer no longer is audible.

File Share Not Online (via Halowaypoinit)

Spartan Ops is highly repetitive

Theater clips have no announcer

No theater/scoring for Campaign

Lack of Small Maps

Playlist Management

Lack of Precision Forge Controls
-Reach's Forge controls allowed players to move objects slower and more precisely when holding in the Left Analog Stick. Additionally, players were able to zoom in on objects with the Right Stick to get a better handling of their precision movements. These controls have been removed without explanation.

"X" Waypoint for Dead Teammates No Longer Exists
-Another feature that has been removed without explanation.

Grifball "Ball Arm Time" Is Bugged
-Setting the Arm Time to any other setting than Instant does not actually change the Arm Time.

Lack of Party Indicators In Matchmaking
-Another feature that has been removed without explanation.

Party Details Tell Significantly Less Details in Halo 4
-Another feature that has been removed without explanation.

Setting Ammo Count for Battery-Based Weapons in Forge Does Nothing

-Changing Ammo Count for batter-based weapons hasn't had an effect every since Forge was introduced in Halo 3. Surprising to see this bug make its way into another game.

Weapons De-spawning Too Quickly If Not An Ordnance Weapon
-Players have noticed that weapons are despawning at a ridiculously quick rate after they have been dropped in comparison to past Halo games. This makes drop-spawning weapons (which creates static weapon spawns) a very inefficient method to spawning weapons.

Games Beginning With No Players On Opposing Team
-Games will somtimes begin with no players on one of the teams. This usually occurs when an entire team backs out after a game or the game after a game has ended because the entire team quit out. This bug is costing players Double XP games.

Alphabetical Order For Active Rosters
-Really confusing when you try to look for specific players through your Active Roster. Essentially forces you to just scroll through the entire Active Roster to find players.

Tactical and Support Packages Earned Through Specializations Are Not Options In Custom Games

-It seems very unneccesarry for these to not be included as options in custom games. It almost seems as if this was an oversight.

Cannot Change Max Player Count of Lobby Once a Player Joins
-Very annoying bug. Requires the leader to leave the party and make a new one to set a new Max Player Count.

Impact and Erosion Dynamic Lighting Bugs
-Both of these forge pallets have bugged or glitched dynamic lighting when about $6000 of the budget is spent. Impact will only cast shadows in proximity of the player, and leaves the rest of the map outside of this "sphere" without shadows, making the map super bright. Erosion loses dynamic lighting entirely and selects what appears to be random tones for the pieces.

Bugged Assassinations
-Players have experienced very buggy assassinations, sometimes allowing their player to navigate out of the assassination animation and kill the player assassinating them.

Setting Respawn Time in Slayer, Infinity Slayer, KotH and Oddball Gametypes Does Not Negate Instant Respawn
-Instant Respawn is always an option to players during a game no matter what the Respawn Duration setting is set to.

Bugged Flag Physics

-The Flag in CTF will sometimes get caught in map geometry and players aren't able to pick up the Flag.

Inability To Set Ammo Amount on Initial or Random Ordnance
-In Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, you were always allowed to set the amount of ammo weapons would spawn with. When spawning weapons through Ordnance, you do not have this option any more. This is especially an issue with Initial Ordnance.

its funny, i think i'd say that halo 3 may have been my favorite halo (despite laaaaag), but i played it MUCH less then 2, reach, and likely 4. must have been an odd/busy time in my life...

If thats the sound of an orgasm I agree. I can see where hate might come from lovers of the RPG version.

But the FPS version was soooooooooo goooooooooooood. Just very unpolished.

I wouldn't say unpolished at all, but I know what you mean, very bare bones in features, but gameplay is superb, so who cares. I just wish someone would finish whatever maps FASA had nearly completed and release them. Game is perfect as is, more maps would be awesome. Game will never get a sequel because it bombed and hardly anyone cares about it, but the people that love it would greatly appreciate more maps.

It's a serious question. What did the game ship with or not ship with that makes it so bad? It seems a unanimous opinion on HaloGAF, but I can't find specifics on why it's bad.

I think it's a great game in dire need of a significant TU.

My biggest complaints are the UI issues and omissions, lack of custom options, and some balancing issues.

Well yea we don't exactly know why that drop off occurred. No one does. You can't go to those that stopped playing and say, "Hi! Why did you stop playing Halo 4?" I'm sure a lot of people just moved on. Probably happens with every game.

This isn't really right. Its denial.

We know exactly why the drop off occurred.

Casuals played the campaign which takes two or three days to beat. Depending on schedules this means you give campaign casuals about 5 days of gaming. Thats when the #'s dropped first. Next was directly related to the release date of Blops II.

The third gradual decline was due to the casual MP fans.

The people playing now are a mix of the really hardcore, the occasional casual player, and people coming back to try new maps or new switched playlists.

The # will continue to decline because Blops II whether you agree or not is the technically the best FPS. Its smoother its quicker its got the players by the balls.

And I can guarantee if you stop catering to those players that huge chunk that left..and focus on the game the people who are still playing or hanging around these forums and not playing you can get them back. By just making a good game that people WANT to play.

Tons of posts here have stated this but Halo actively goes out of its way to make you stop playing by terrible matchups, wasted time, uneven matches, trueskill eventually requiring tons of time before getting a game, and the declining population making trueskill matchups worse. Framerate is a disaster game plays slow. Its 2012. People want to play a game thats been made right. Not Halo 4. It literally contains features that still arent active... and it has less features than the last Halo. How is that progress? The name of this game should be Halo 2.5 as its in between 2 and 3.

Off the top of my head I think the gist of it seems like the AAs returning, ordnance in general, CoDifying with loadouts (and weapons like boltshot within them) and perks and what have yous, map design, split screen performance, DMR dominance, stuff like that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but CoD has OP weapons, and has perks, and has all sorts of things wrong with it, but the gameplay is fun, and the rewards system is addicting (especially with game-modifying results).

Halo got almost everything right, but it was outshone by it's competition is all. It's a Mac in a PC world to me - beautiful, elegant and awesome, but overshadowed by ubiquity and the ability to game/do whatever you want.

The Campaign was close to perfect for me, and multiplayer is addictive and fun.

It's a serious question. What did the game ship with or not ship with that makes it so bad? It seems a unanimous opinion on HaloGAF, but I can't find specifics on why it's bad.
I'll start with Spartan Ops. I'll try to be as objective as possible.

- The enemy combat is poor and doesn't scale depending on number of players, making the missions feel cheap and unfair when playing solo.
- Spartan Ops was touted to scratch the itch that fans of Firefight would have with it's removal from Halo 4. To that effect, there is no theater, no skulls, no scoring, no customization of any kind beyond standard level difficulty.
- Netcode for SpOps is far worse than Reach's Firefight.

off the top of my head. I'll let someone else handle campaign and/or multiplayer.

Lack of Campaign scoring,
lack of campaign theater,
theater without improvements,
firefight gone,
spartan ops without scoring/ skulls,
Return of AAs like Jetpack and Active Camo,
Global Ordnance, random ordnance,
infinity gametypes,
loudouts and weapons like the boltshot in them
, perks,
too many big maps,
the new weapons are too strong in my opinion,
bad maps except Haven,
broken File Browser,
no video rendering,
no fine tuning in forge,
bad weapon balance,
flinching,
Gametypes are missing like Assault, VIP and more, Flag can't be tweaked in custom games to the classic style

I could go on the whole day.

That's what CoD is for, if people want that they can play that. Halo doesn't need to try and awkwardly include those elements to "me too" its way to inferiority.

Wait so what exactly is wrong with Halo 4?

Boltshot
Plasma Pistols/Plasma Grenades in BTB Loadouts
Random Global Ordnance
DMR OP, ping from everywhere
Boltshot
Rock Paper Scissors design with the AAs' and Perks being in customized loadouts.
Have to grind to get some perks (specilazations)
Jetpack and Camo in 2012
Fileshare not working (at least they acknowledge this)
Custom options not working (no acknowledgment on this)
Not nearly as much custom options as Halo 3 or Reach.
Forge got gimped (but they added lighting!)
No campaign theater
DLC fiasco
Boltshot
No Red X's on Dead Teammates
Boltshot
Scattershot is inconsistent.
Perssonal Ordnance is also a random roll, so you could get nades, speedboost, and needler, other person gets damage boost, rocket, or sniper.

Actually because of the pick 10 and quick deaths in CoD. Most of the stuff is balanced, in the fact that something will counter what you have.

Ok slow down because you started on one topic and then switched to another.

I'm not denying that:
-Tons of players buy Halo for the campaign so they beat it and moved on
-CoD's release took a bunch of the population
-People just flat out didn't like the game so they stopped playing

I'm just saying that you can't account for all of the players who stopped playing. You don't know exactly why. Also, it being the holiday season with so many games coming out, there were definitely people who bought the game, played for a little while, got their fix and then moved on to the next game they bought. It happens with every game.

And yea, I would love if Halo games would stop catering to the casuals. But it's been happening since Halo 3.

I will also say that I feel like sometimes people are playing a different game than I am in regards to matchmaking times, TrueSkill efficiency, JiP issues and lag. Not going to try to explain why, that's just what it is. My experience has clearly been better than a lot of others.

Wow lots of hate...err criticism...

There are many 'bugs' with shipped titles from even the AAA folks. But I see.

Do you think these lists of things 'wrong' with Halo (like Campaign scoring and forge issues and repetitive Spops) deter the base multiplayer population? Because they don't really affect Multiplayer at all.

The DMR's power doesn't seem to really affect much in multiplayer to me - its' like the 1887 shotguns in MW2 - you adapt or die. Not quit the franchise.

Those guns work fine. Where they place them is aside from that.
One hit kill snipers work fine?

Two of those two weapons have no business in MP, and the other should be something lying on the ground for a pick-up, but the game obviously does not use that system. Besides, they already have a human Shotgun and Scattershot. Toss it out the fuckin' window.

I think one hit kill weapons are fine with limited ammo and availability and predictable spawning. It's not the functionality of those weapons that's the problem.
