I think its a bit disappointing that the forerunner aesthetic now has all these floating pieces.
I think the animations can't really be that expressive or intersting when your pieces are all rigid floating pieces.
If you're a student, Autodesk's entire suite is free through their education website.
Mudbox makes for an excellent 3d photshop and sculptor.
I would urge you to start with that and a few free tutorials on their website or Youtube.

Do you have any experience animating? I can do hand-drawn or keyframe for animation demos using Vegas or something but it'd be interesting to see the differences from a first-person perspective.
I think as far as actual game mechanics go I'm going to try and make the Combiner in Halo Custom Edition first since it essentially has all the functions it needs (charge shot, shotgun round and needler round) already in the game.
