Did the Battleblock Theater team hire him? Dat text.

Off-topic twitter repost:
You guys will be happy to know Halysis is dead in the water for the most part. I'm gearing up to start brainstorming for a completely new IP. The feature set's a bit like Destiny mixed with Halo Custom Edition. There are a few primary components:

OPEN WORLD CAMPAIGN
Bit of a misnomer, but it's like Planetside 2 meets Dark Souls. Third-person and first-person are toggleable in a menu.

LINEAR CAMPAIGN
Feels like ODST meets Reach meets Borderlands. Focuses on 8 main characters.

Project LIVECHAMBER
A multiplayer component. 4v4 and 16v16 are the main modes. You can use any of the 8 characters in either mode. Player traits are relatively unchanged but each character has an "Affinity Weapon" or an on-map pickup weapon that gains an altmode if it has a "native" user. Heavily inspired by arena shooters. I think there's roughly 14 weapons in the entire sandbox not counting the 4 grenades.

GENESIS
Features a LIVECHAMBER map creator and Arsenal, which allows you to develop weapons for the Campaigns.

Anyways, the big news is that it means I won't be shitting up the thread with fanwank megaposts anymore. Blog posts will be linked on twitter, but given it's barely got any views in the first place it doesn't have much point. Carry on!

The problem with the white text, imo, it's the stupidly useless information

It lets me know I:
Killed someone with a Sniper
Killed someone with a Rocket Launcher
Killed someone with a Needler
Killed someone with a Railgun
Killed someone with a Plasma Grenade
Destroyed a vehicle
Splattered someone
Etc...

I'm playing the damn game with my eyes open! I know what weapon I'm using and if I destroyed a vehicle or ran someone over with one!

I agree but purely because the scoring system doesn't give the additional "+5", "+10", "+15" numbers any worth to the player. You see the numbers pop up and a circle fill up but the correllation between the two is never obvious to the player.

Yeah making a good an obvious connection between the two would be nicer. It's still too much useless information IMO but I definitely understand your opinion.

That's what I realized I missed most when I played reach the other night. Seeing who killed who and how is nice. Reach's HUD was good.

Oh yeah, and de-scoping. I'd take bloom over flinch

Guys, fun fact.

"X killed Y" means it was a kill performed by a teammate.

"Y was killed by Z" means it was a kill performed by an enemy.

You mentioned multikills once and proceeded to detail how awesome headshots with the snipers felt and said exactly zilch about any kind of mulitkill or how the awesomeness that used to accompany them felt worse.

Something you still haven't touched on. You've only talked about headshots with the sniper. Is that all white text is for you?

Speaking for myself I think multi-kills feel more awesome when accompanied by a big bright, lovely looking medal rather than dry text. It's a personal preference. That's all I can give you nockz. If that doesn't sate you you can paypal me the wonga to go and see a shrink to find out why I prefer it if you like, I can PM you the details!

I guess color coding works. It's nice when you're playing solo and don't recognize gamertags immediately, but could be messy and give bad contrast. Just stick with what works.

I like the distraction medal, it lets you know when the guy that was shooting at you has been killed. *shrug*

So they're batting 0.010 this season. Nice.

Adorable wit aside, in Halo 4 you have both. What, then, is the problem with haing it there for players who do need/like it? You have your medals, admittedly not as large, but they are there all the same and less of a clutter.

I'm not sure about the weapon icons either. They usually make the killfeed a bit of a mess. Making it so it only does so for power weapons would be interesting, though.

I think showing the weapon icon would take away some ''surprise'' away from the game. I'm all for clearly showing who killed who, but I think you should only be able to tell which weapon was used from in game stuff (so explosions, sounds), or teammates calling it out.

White text was/is an inelegant solution to a problem that didn't exist. That pre-release strafegif (why is that not on the HaloGAF site?) showed medals that popped with a "whatever" score. That was a far better solution, in my opinion.

Besides, the score being displayed is largely irrelevant to player behavior. Are you suddenly going to go for COMEBACK KILL/VEHICLE DESTROYED on a regular basis because you were alerted to how many points you get for it? Of course not.

edit: found it

throw anyone who had any hand in any of the ui systems in halo 4 into a pit. they get an F- on the halogaf report card

Well the new medals aren't as good as the old ones and they disappear too quickly and are also difficult to distinguish (on the screen I play on at least). The white text stays longer than the medals (I think) so naturally it's going to be compared to the old feedback system.

So your solution would be to hae slightly larger medals that stick around longer? Why get rid of the text you, personally, don't really care about?

Edit: I agree with you Squidhands. Would love to have seen the discussions that lead to those to items seperating. As for the score itself, I don't think it's trying to encourage player behaviour, rather than trying to be transparent as to what influene their actions had on the score/Ordnance.

I think a lot of my complaints with the Halo 4 HUD feeling messier have a lot to do with the typeface, honestly. The stuff they're using feels too angular for me, especially given its all caps usage; from a practical standpoint, however, it's just too thin. On SD TVs it's got to be close to unreadable for some people, but even close to my 24" monitor it can be difficult at times.

Some day I should actually just make my ideal HUD instead of talking about it. Actually, we should make it a contest here. I've got some swag I could contribute.

Man im gonna agree with knockz on the white text.

It honestly doesnt bother me anymore. Its really not that intrusive, I dont even notice it anymore. I know its right there in the middle, but its not like your gonna sit there trying to read while it someone gets the drop on you.

The distraction medal can be useful. If you get sniped in the body, and then your team mate takes out the sniper who did it, well then you know that whoever was just killed was the guy sniping you. Whats the problem with that? Its actually useful so now you can run to other cover or whatever knowing that sniper isnt still looking at you.

People stopped complaining about it because there are bigger things to worry about in 4.

Bigger things to worry about, the white text really isnt a problem.

So now I have to take you to a decent taqueria too.

that thing on the upper right is that supposed be a taco?

That's a picture of the "Doritos Locos Taco" that they sell at Taco Bell. Remember they're a fast food Tex-Mex place if you're going to give them a food genre, so it's an "American taco" if you will.

No Carbine buff??

I'd like to take this moment to reflect on the dearly departed.

So it was near 80 degrees Monday and Tuesday. I walk outside this morning to go to work and...
WTF WEATHER.

We'd just had a week of weather in the 80's. Nice stuff. Thought winter was finally gone. Then today, we get this shit: http://www.weather.com/weather/aler...ificance=S&areaid=NMZ412&office=KEPZ&etn=0000. Frickin' 20's man? Grrrr...

Dude, you're awesome in-game and all that, but your forum debate style always seems purely semantical and syntactical in nature. The guy isn't drafting legislation here, man.

Great to see Halo 4 about to be beaten by a game that was released in 2011. Do you think 343 have realized what a flop they've made yet, or are they still in denial?

I knew it was near impossible to get to 35 in the DLC playlist, but only 26 people did it? Damn. I feel a bit better about not getting anywhere close now.

Depends on if you have any actual criticism or just dropped by to troll/trash 343?

Heart wrenching.

It's amazing how far medical advances in life expectancy has come.

And I'm hopeful that we will find a cure for it completely.

Yup, Elijah's doctor is hopeful that by the time he enters kindergarten, there will be a Kalydeco equivalent for his mutation, which is the most common mutation in the population.

As if 343 listens to actual criticism. That's all this thread has been since release. But Halo 4 sold lots, so all criticism is void I guess.

Yeah, I know, right? The weapon tweaks in progress now, hiring Bravo, adding and managing playlists, putting out patches, adding static weapons, Frank and David routinely coming in here to view feedback, etc. They must have just all taken long vacations!

Another update on the (possible) next OT:

j3k9BZOyt9fki.png

j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
5.01.13: Tuned weapons setting will go live on May 3! Before that 343 will broadcast the setting on their Twitch account. Also new Forge maps will be added to playlist, see the details here.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
4.24.13: Another update on weapon balance. Plus updates to the Join-in-Progress.

jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Battle Rifle: We announced last week that we’re investigating the feasibility of a 4-shot. We had also mentioned the reduced rate of fire on the BR. When we brought the BR to a 4-shot, the weapon was dominating at all ranges. To balance it out, the fire rate now matches the DMR exactly in current testing.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
DMR and LightRifle: We’ve slightly reduced the range at which the reticle turns red for the DMR, and once again matched the LightRifle to this distance. We’re also investigating slightly increasing the rate of fire on the LightRifle when zoomed, which increases its viability at range.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Assault Rifle: Our current tests bring us to an optimal kill time range that lies between that of Halo: CE’s and Halo 3’s Assault Rifles.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
As of Monday, we’ve updated the parameters at which players can join games, based on game mode and playlist. While the specific settings will vary greatly depending on the game mode, score of both teams and time remaining, the following are some highlights of the current Join-in-Progress parameters:

jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Once a match has passed just over half of the total game time, Join-in-Progress is disabled across all game modes and playlists.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Rumble Pit now has the smallest Join-In-Progress window, only allowing players to join during the first few kills of a match.
In Slayer matches outside of Team Throwdown and Team Doubles, players will no longer join after one team has reached just over half of the score limit.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
In King of the Hill and Oddball, players will no longer join in the second half of the game in regards to score limit.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
In Grifball, players will no longer join single-round matches if over 3 goals have been scored by one team. We will be updating Grifball Pro to similar settings in the next update.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
In Team Throwdown and Team Doubles, players will no longer join after a small join window during and before the first moments of a match.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
4.19.13: Long delayed, long awaited, very special HaloGAF Radio with Frank O’Connor, Kevin Franklin and Andy “Bravo” Dudynsky of 343 Industries to discuss CSR, Weapon Balances and general Halo 4 topics is released. Toshi is a jerk.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
4.10.13: 343 updates about the current state of weapon balance.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Precision Weapon Balance: Our goal of the upcoming balance update is to create an even balance across all precision rifles (DMR, Battle Rifle, Carbine and LightRifle). Our latest tests have included (but are not limited to) rate of fire and damage tweaks to several weapons within this category. Additionally, it is important to create balance amongst all primary weapons, which leads into the next category.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Automatic Weapon Balance: An important part of overall balance is ensuring that each weapon excels within its intended role. As we move the dials to tweak some of the precision weapons, it demands that certain tweaks also be made to automatic weapons, which include the Assault Rifle, Suppressor and more. We are investigating modifying the rate of fire, accuracy and damage on these weapons.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Vehicle Weapon Balance: We have seen many community concerns that certain vehicles may be examples of sandbox elements that could be improved. We are currently looking at tuning some of the weapons that these vehicles have at their disposal in order to increase their usefulness and viability. We greatly value the teamwork (and fun) required in riding around in a Warthog with a buddy, and want to ensure that this and other vehicles have great draw and value.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Also, we are taking a look at many weapons that do not fit within these categories to ensure that the sandbox is providing the most ideal experience possible for all users in all playlists and game modes. As we finish up our internal testing, we look forward to providing further updates on the weapons that will be receiving attention and the specific changes that will be made, once finalized.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
4.3.13: Waypoint post an extensive look at Castle Map Pack. Also goes into detail how CSR will work:
You will be given a unique rank for each playlist within Halo 4, and the system will use the familiar 1-50 scale. We have been closely monitoring the match results and progression of players behind the scenes to ensure that this new system presents a challenge while still providing an optimal Matchmaking experience. As this is a brand new feature, everyone’s CSR will be set to 0 when it launches. This will allow all players to start on equal footing and enjoy the progression of the 1-50 system.

There are two different ways we calculate your CSR. CSR is closely based on your TrueSkill rank, which ensures that you’ll be ranked – and matched – against opponents of comparable skill. Your CSR is dependent upon your personal performance as well as the rank of those you play with. While several playlists will use a win/loss system to determine whether or not you rank up, others will use individual scoring, which will rank you based on your performance against everyone in the match, teammates included. In some playlists, you’ll rank up faster than others – these vary in order to create the most optimal experience for each playlist. Much more info at Waypoint.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
3.28.13: HaloWaypoint posted the Pax East Q&A. Here are the more interesting tidbits:
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[Halo 4 support] While there are no announced map packs after Castle releases later this spring, we have some cool ideas about future content and support that we’re tinkering with right now.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[Universal balance changes to base game] You can expect to see global tweaks to the sandbox much like the adjustment of the Boltshot in the previous title update and the Warthog’s Gauss cannon in this one.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[Range of the TU weapon tuning] We have several knobs that we can use when it comes to weapon tuning, a few being auto-aim, projectile accuracy and rate of fire.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[TU weapon tuning in custom games] Unfortunately, the title update does not allow for weapon tuning in custom games.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[Enabling/disabling Sprint] Currently there are no plans to add a custom games option to enable/disable sprint. We may look into experimenting with that, though, in a game type or playlist at some point.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[Basis of CSR] For the mainstream playlists, your CSR is based on your individual performance in each match and the CSR of those you play against. In select playlists, your CSR will be determined on whether you win or lose as a team, as well as the CSR of your opponents.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[How CSR updates] CSR is based on the previous full game played, so the data from that session is processed, applied to your Halo 4 account and then displayed. You won’t see it update on the fly as you play, but rather between games. So you will basically always be one game ahead of your CSR as you play.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
[Bringing back flag dropping/picking up] Currently there are no plans to add the ability to drop the flag or pick it up manually. But I never say never, so we’ll see.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
3.24.13: During Pax East, 343 revealed Castle Map Pack (Trailer, features three medium-to-large maps), Forge Island (Which will be FREE!) and they went into detail about the upcoming title update and competitive ranking system (CSR). Watch the full panel here.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
3.20.13: 343 details upcoming title update. The following is outlined (This list is not final, according to 343):
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Enabled “X-Markers” on the HUD to designate when and where teammates are killed.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Updated Active Camo to fully reveal players when they fire all weapons.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Reduced the auto aim, magnetism and damage on the Gauss Warthog.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Fixed an issue in which some players at SR-130 did not see their Specialization on their in-game Player Card.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Fixed various issues with ordnance navigation markers.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Fixed various join-in-progress issues with Flood.
jTEDAow7qLfQb.png
Added the ability to make weapon adjustments via backend tuning.

"If your ears perked up with that last one, you probably understand what this means. Previously added weapon adjustments, such as the Bolt Shot Nerf that went live last month, needed a title update in order to be released. With this title update, we are adding the ability to make weapon adjustments outside of the standard title update process. This will allow us to fine tune and tweak the Halo 4 sandbox as often or not as often as needed." - Halo Bulletin, 3.20.13
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
3.06.13: New playlist added: Team Action Sack. 4v4 based, featuring the modes Binary Slayer, Lightning CTF, Rockets & Rails and Team Fiesta. HaloWaypoint goes into detail what each mode is.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
3.01.13: 343 hires Josh Menke as Senior Multiplayer Designer (His twitter). Previously of Blizzard Entertainment, where he worked on Matchmaking and ranking design and implementation for Black Ops II, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft, and all other Blizzard games.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
2.25.13: 343 streamed the Majestic Map pack and you can fully watch it here. It features Lead Multiplayer Level Designer Kynan Pearson, Sustain Producer Andy Dudynsky (Better known as Bravo) and Designer David Ellis.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
2.20.13: Majestic Map pack released on February 25, featuring 3 all-new small to medium sized maps - Monolith and Skyline are the smaller maps and Landfill is the medium sized map. See footage of them over at HaloWaypoint.
j6xHLaw3JWvsg.png
2.01.13: 343 hires Quinn Delhoyo as multiplayer designer (His twitter). Previously of Epic Games, where he worked on Gears of War 3 and Judgment.

Putting out patches and updating playlists is expected, even then they have been weak. The rest is small shit that only attempts to polish a turd. The real test for 343 is acknowledging that Halo 4 was a failure and to put the criticism to better use; improving their next game. If Halo 5 releases and its all the same bullshit with tiny improvements.. well...

Halo 4s number continuing to flop makes me happy because it should wake 343 up from their denial and we maybe, hopefully, get a decent sequel. I highly doubt it though. But admitting that Halo 4 was terrible would be a start.

As for the idea that Frankie and David are in here to read criticism, bwahahahahahaha. Have they even fixed the Banshee in Reach yet? They are basically PR heads.
