Depending on how a small map might be designed, it could lend itself to some really fun times.It's 343's responsibility to design maps that work well with the sandbox they've created, including their design ideas for what kind of maps will create the style of play they want in their game, not one from a past game that they didn't even make. Nothing else.
It's not just sprint in H4 that makes larger maps play so much smaller, it's a sprint that lasts a LONG time, has a very short recharge, it's more powerful weapons across the board than the past two games including tremendous range of combat on some of the core weapons, it's a global and personal ordnance drop that is designed to spread powerups and weapons across different areas of the map keeping the gameplay more dynamic than in the past, it's a set of armor abilities that require space to deploy and use alongside global sprint, it's instant respawns in Slayer, and it's a spawning system that has been design to spawn you closer to teammates and the action than in the past few games.
343 has made a significantly faster paced Halo game than 3 or Reach with much larger maps. Old maps to not apply with the exact same design principles. It took me all of 5 minutes with the game to know that maps like Midship, Lockout, and Guardian would be a clusterfuck of a disaster.
I want to hear about the meta game. Stat tracking, ranks, APIs, Waypoint, etc, etc.

I'm actually less hyped for Halo 4 than I was for Reach. With Reach, I was naively oblivious to how damaging some of the new mechanics would be. I had given barely any thought to reticle bloom, how jetpack would destroy map flow, sword + sprint, etc. It all sounded awesome to me.A game has never felt so far away even though its only a few weeks from release.

I'm not gonna lie, while I am excited for Halo 4, I'm nervous for faster kill times. I was never good at Halo 3. Its going to be hard for me to adjust to a much faster paced game. I'm excited though.

If I were in control I'd just add a few people from the hardcore community to the Cartographers / consultants and get them working on grabbing maps for a hardcore playlist. Release the first version, get feedback / have them also collect gametypes, update it the next month, keep going this way until people are happy with it. Let it actually evolve so it's hardcore while still being Halo 4 and not Halo 2x4. Least voted for gametypes get dropped out of the list each month.

Halo 3 killtimes were slow. 4sk BR in 3 kills slower than a 5sk DMR in 4 i believe. Not to mention how innaccurate the BR was at any sort of ranged shooting.
Ultimately, high budget or low budget, good filmaking should be able to captivate the audience and capture their sense of wonder and curiosity. If it is done right, the budget and special effects will be sidelined by what truly matters. I am not feeling that from the trailer. It feels very predictable, and a little lacking in heart. I have no doubt many passionate people poured countless hours into making FUD awesome, but I still do not feel like things turned out as good as they could have.
That said, I may end up eating crow once the series starts. I am simply judging off the trailer the shorts released thus far.

I agree with this perspective. Implementing remakes should be done with extreme caution. Look at Battle Canyon in Reach. The map wasn't designed to accommodate jet packs and look what happened. The map straight up broke with them.

I noticed that there's a lot of parallelism between the two games - what with both being set in a Dyson sphere / shield world. The Dawn or Infinity landing vs The Spirit of Fire. The large "Spires" vs the Forerunner ships. Hell even the Mantis is reminiscent of the Cyclops.

I really hope community cartographers gets overhauled before Halo 4 - I appreciate the effort you put in but I don't think the current set up brings the cream of the crop to the top. - I would hate if hardcore settings where run in the same way.

I'm just going to leave that as a matter of opinion, because you haven't seen the mountain of shit we climb through to find the diamonds. There's also the fact that not all the community maps in matchmaking are a result of the CC - there's plenty of them that Bungie and 343 just put in themselves.
As it stands though, the majority of the content submissions we've made were successful in terms of maps being voted for and adopted by the matchmaking playerbase. I don't like all the maps that come through either. But that's why there's a multitude of people involved so a map that one person would outright reject gets in and is well liked.
I'm bored so I'd like to hear the problems you had with certain maps.

Edit: seems like your already planning to change things up - awesome - I still think a hardcore mode would need its own 'staff' who are specialised in competitive play.
You also missed the part in my post where I mentioned that I know how much work you put in.
I don't play reach enough to even know map names - never mind list problems with them - but the process behind the cartographers seems like it wouldn't work for what would need to be a fast changing competitive landscape.
Don't take it personally - I don't think there is a way you can have a more streamlined process - which is why I wouldn't want competitive modes to have the same processes - you do a good job with what you have - but I think ultimately the underlying issues with a community driven effort make the end result suffer.
I can get more into the specifics when Im at a computer - mobile browsing isn't designed for this kind of thing.

Really? REALLY? Obviously a new game doesn't have to adhere to any old principles from a previous game. All i was stating was that small arena style maps are petty popular. Whether or not playing on one in Halo4 would be a complete disaster has yet to be seen. Based on what we have seen from game play and first hand accounts, sure, perhaps they wouldn't work. But everything DOES fall on 343's shoulders whether or not they decide to completely revamp the game or not, because Halo has a massive following and anything 343 decides to do is going to be met with some type of criticism.
