So you can't edit the actual bases and stuff? That's a shame.... they had a chance to make a good arena for making small maps that are lag/framerate free.

Ridgeline/Timberlands has the full FW palette.

So. Awesome.

I'm still catching up on the thread, where I can I read about these?

Custom challenges is another new feature that 343 Industries is excited about. The feature is a riff on the daily and weekly challenges that 343 issues. It allows friends to create their own challenges for one another, such as scoring 50 headshots in a multiplayer match within 24 hours. The custom challenge option will be available in Campaign, Matchmaking Firefight, Multiplayer, and Custom modes.

More than just bragging rights, completed custom challenges yield Halo: Reach credits, at a rate that fluctates depending on the difficulty and circumstances of the task. Reach credits can then be spent on cosmetic upgrades, such as new Spartan armor.

Halo Waypoint's overhaul comes as the service gains competition of a sort in Call of Duty: Elite, which Activision is launching alongside Modern Warfare 3 on November 8. One notable difference between the two services is that Elite will have a $50 premium component. For now, at least, 343 Industries doesn't plan to follow suit.

"As of right now, we’re staying with the model that we currently have," Hebenthal said. "So we don’t have any plans in the short-term to operate premium versions of Waypoint. But, you know, you could see things change in the future as we think about new things that do have value and would stand on their own, think about it that way."

Wonder if custom challenges will allow for things like:

Get more kills than Gamertag1 by the end of the day - 50000 cR.

No, the system will only allow payouts commiserate with the challenge selected.

Active challanges seems like such a waste. I would have rather liked for them to have spent some effort doing something else for Reach... Oh well, perhaps this will lead to something cool for Halo 4.

Thanks.

This is the set of goal categories for Firefight:

Goals.png

There's nothing new here, as they are the same categories we see in the current Challenges. (Medals of Type would be along the lines of, sprees and multikills).

Kills of Enemy is selected, leading to this:

EnemyClasses.png

This is definitely new. The only templates we've seen show up in the pre-set Firefight Challenges are for Elites or Grunts. It looks like (going from the scroll bar), every enemy type and class subset is available. Which is freaking awesome.

My only remaining questions are:

Can we require them to be completed in matchmaking? Firefight and "Firefight Matchmaking" would then be different options.

It looks like the system builds out the cR payout, since it's not an option visible to the user. How does it scale? Is there a daily or per Challenge credit cap? People are going to set up Challenges for offline Firefight and grind that way. I assume offline, custom modes will have tiny payouts by default.

Will we be able to see how much a Challenge we've created is worth before we submit it?

I'm more excited about this custom Challenge feature than for the entire title update.

Groovy, that's one down.

Will the payout toggles be published, or left for us to find? (Kill a Grunt offline, 1 cR, online in Legendary, 10 cR, that sort of thing.)

So nothing like:

Goal - Multiplayer matchmaking kills.

Amount - More than challenge creator by 11:59 PM.

Hey look, is that "Marine Infantry"?

Friends Like HAL - Kill 7 Pelicans worth of Marines on Installation 04 in Multiplayer Matchmaking 6000 cR

Yup, I laughed at that one.

I hope we can toggle difficulty settings in the Challenge Type screen. Campaign, Campaign Heroic, Campaign Legendary, Firefight Matchmaking Legendary, etc. I think those kind of options would be required in order to properly scale payouts.

I suppose in Firefight VS (which is basically an unknown mode lawl) those marines that are on Installation 04 will be enemies. For the first time we will have a mode where we are against marine AI. To be fair its not like there are many marine infantry on that firefight map, but its going to be interesting seeing how the AI works on the few on the map.

Something like that. As Ghal mentioned earlier some of these challenges will be familiar, while others are wholly new.

You will be able to create matcaking and custom challenges, but as you can imagine the payouts will be lower in custom games. However, for campaign options such as difficulty & skulls will increase credit payouts.

Here's a new link or ya.

It's fake. Nicely done, but definitely fake.

"Be Like Dax" – Complete Tip of the Spear using only the Pro-Pipe, Assault Rifle, or the Needler – 12,000 cR.

"Stephen's Halo Justice" - Earn two yoink medals in multiplayer matchmaking.

"An armor lock hero" - Earn 5 rejection medals in multiplayer matchmaking.

"Rubber bands delivery" - Finish a game without a single kill.

"Facking grenades!" - Earn 7 grenade kills on a single multiplayer matchmaking game.

"Mike Dongblain was here" - Finish a multiplayer matchmaking game with more than 17 kills.

Can we link to these challenges across the internet, or are only people on your friends list able to participate in them?

IE I could add a link to a challenge, people can click it and add it to their challenge queue without being a friend of a special gamertag.

What if you're foreveralone and don't have friends.. Can you challenge yourself? More specific, if no one sends you a challenge directly, do you miss out on being able to participate in these challenges? I thought I saw where only 7 people could participate in one challenge, so there couldn't be a "halogaf daily challenge" that we could all jump in on, right?

I love you.

It's a much more robust set of options than were baked into the shipping Challenge templates, because it provides access to the full spectrum of categories. Enemy class and type goals were limited to a few (Infantry, Specialist, Leader, or Grunts and Elites), and only a few weapon-specific goals are available (or weapon class, such as automatic). Now we'll be able to pick them all.

The limitation - at least, from what we can see - is the goals are limited to a single objective. We pick the goal, and then establish the circumstances for it. I think the holy grail of these kinds of meta games is the ability to link multiple sets of criteria (Complete ONI with Famine and Tough Luck enabled, on Heroic, while killing 120 enemies without dying....).

But it's an enormous step forward from the current system, a nice, natural evolution from it. Hopefully Challenges are going to part of Halo 4, and continue to expand on the idea.

Seriously awesome feature. Huge kudos to the 343 team for putting it together.

It would be much neater as an end user to "subscribe" to another player's challenges. This would obviously fuck with cR payouts, though...

Yeah. If 343 is doing all of this for Halo: Reach, I expect to see challenges 2.0 in Halo 4. Customization from the start with multiple objectives and criteria.

I will just say this right now, do NOT allow for Long Night of Solace to be used, people are already planning on boosting LASO for Cr since you can beat that map in under 10 min with all skulls on.

I'm guessing there's a cap to the cR earned from custom Challenges each day to throttle, if not eliminate, that sort of thing. lybertyboy?

Or maybe just make completion Challenges for Nightfall pathetically small.

Can someone answer this?:

I have 2 360s and 2 copies of Reach. (one Games on Demand, one retail[installed])

If I want to play the Anniversary maps on both 360s at the same time, do I need one copy of CEA or two?

Some of this stuff is still fluid, but the current plan is to have certain challenges only have an end timer of 24 hours. This will help to keep folks from just adding new challenges over and over again since you can't add a new challenge if your other custom challenge slots are currently full.

That works too, thanks.

Is there a time frame for when the system/Waypoint update is released?

i know its been said a lot before but really, thank you guys for answering questions when you can.

Also the Waypoint update hits when CEA hits correct?

anyone else key into the narration in the ATLAS video?

Allison said "premium feature" a whole lot of times. i can't remember if she referred to custom challenges under that umbrella too, or if it was something else...

I heard that a lot aswell, kind of worried me BUT I doubt they mean anything by it, if it was a pay to use feature then im sure they would have announced that clearly.

Preordered mine recently as well but nothing extra like that.

I know 343 said there isn't a LE, but they did say they were doing something that hasn't been done before with the packaging. Has that been talked about more?

The game will be released with a paper sleeve that has some foil parts. And behind the Paper sleeve, there is something cool. lybertyboy teased us this information. I don't want to know more about it. I want to have a neat surprise.
