Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

WOW so good. The new AR looks awesome. Also in the one gameplay screenshot, there is something blurred out. I wonder what that could be. The Elite looks awesome.

Excited about the large scale battles and the option to use complete stealth if you so require. I'm disappointed with the lack of any new multiplayer information although the confirmation of feature parity with Halo 3 is a nice bonus.

Finally OH LORD at the tech. Such an improvement. I couldn't read all of the information in the page because of a sharp flash on the page, however the pictures speak for themselves.

Now we just have to wait 10 days for the EDGE Reach cover. They should go more in depth on the game itself.

Lastly, where is my BR!?

I'd like to see the actual magazine, not just scans, but the stupid retailers around here don't carry Game Informer... Hard to tell quality without the real thing.
Even if you could see the magazine, it wouldn't be indicative. Just compare the "screenshots" Halo 3 takes compared to how it looks in-game.

Until the beta, we won't know how this game looks.

Oh God, that Lehto quote about showing natural environments and ambient life... please let it be true.
*cue pics of dead trees and Halo Brand rocks and grass textures*

I unno. I'll wait for my issue, but nothing looks remarkably different except for the character models.

Assassinations sound so cool now that they are special attacks and not just one-hit-kill melees.

Also, Spirits and Phantoms in the same game? Awesome.

Also, Jesus Christ, do Game Informer know what the word 'ascribe' means? How do these things go to print? Someone give me a job in games journalism please.

Didn't someone deduce what that was from the TM leaked pics?

Looks excellent.

I wonder if we'll be stepping into other team members shoes for Co-op or if we'll suddenly have 4 lone wolves running around :).

DMR sounds awesome, I just hope they don't put hojillion of them in SP like the BR in Halo 3. One of the best things about Halo: CE's and ODST's campaigns are how valuable and rare midrange weapons are.

It sounded like the armor things were more of a "Go here and choose from a buffet" rather than equipment which was more like picking up individual pieces.

That article was like 70% fluff sadly :(.

Now when they say Magnum do they mean Halo:CE pistol or Halo 2 pistol or Halo 3 magnum?

...

:lol

And I have to wonder about the DRM...is it basically the E3 version of Halo 2's battle rifle? Meaning three round bursts that can headshot along with single shot while in zoom? Doesn't that just cut the effectiveness of the weapon down?

My only question so far is what can we expect from the multiplayer. Camoing up to steal a power weapon back or plant a bomb, and sprinting quickly for a power weapon all sound interesting in theory but a lot of tinkering with the map design and perhaps other mechanics will be necessary to make everything flow well.
I instantly had a vision of some dude with sprint and a sword running around murdering everything, and I winced.

What's a BR? We have the DMR.
From what it sounds like, the DMR>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(x100) BR. Everyone needs to forget about the BR. It looks like it's been scrapped with a seemingly much better weapon put in its place.

From this preview, it really looks like Bungie is focusing on the aspects that made Halo 1 great and the other two games lacked in.

Whether it's the terrifying danger of facing a well-shielded Elite, or the wonder of turning a corner to be greeted by breathtaking panorama of mountains and forests, Halo: Reach embraces the sense of mystery and excitement the franchise was founded upon.

Of course, it wouldn't be a sense of mystery without Forerunner structures. Don't disappoint me, Bungie!

Conspicuous by its absence. Bungie may have scrapped it.

They did talk about a new medium range, single-shot, weapon called the DMR (IIRC). Sounds like the single-shot BR that the TM leak talked about without calling it a BR.

Still don't know how I feel about Needler Rifle vs. Carbine =/

Thing does say they are going back to Halo 1-era shit. A convenient excuse to forget it exists.

Also I'm not a fan of "Hey, we can't use brutes as idiot charging types anymore, how are we supposed to make a game now? OOooo let's just make the biker chickens do that!".

Iono, maybe I'm too critical -

Anyone feel like its a semi-updated Halo 3 engine, as opposed to a 'new' one? It looks meh to me - same simple architecture is going to be used on buildings. I understand that is what Bungie has done so far, but make Reach at least somewhat cool looking. I see better looking buildings in modular homes built in the 1990s.

They simplified shadows to allow more things on-screen. That is a great choice. Only problem is, everything looks the same with a color filter on (minus faces), and the overall functionality of 'armor equipment' seems like the same exact thing as 'equipment' in H3 with a different face. Maybe it will get used (I hope it does), but the negative nancy in me says its going to be nerfed and ultimately not needed in the core gameplay for the multiplayer. When equipment was announced, it was announced as something that would 'change everything' if I recall correctly. It did nothing except introduce a new toy to gameplay that was hardly used, and even taken out of most maps, or had high respawn timers.

I honestly hope this 'armor equipment' isn't something they tout as something brand new and redefining. It really is merely an evolution and something that shouldn't be announced as something that is OMG awesome.

It's DMR. Designated Marksman Rifle. Also known as: The Deemer, Da Mister, The Lightsaber. You can guess who came up with the last one.

DRM is the thing that protects your PC game from you after you've installed it.

Good shit, Bungie. Good shit.

Armor abilities are the natural evolution from equipment, and I'll finally get to use the recharging camo from the Arbiter in Halo 2 again (which rocked).

Lots of good stuff, but the emphasis on making Reach a more natural place is what intrigues me the most. The environments, ambient life, people and vehicles are all fleshed out.

Oh, and there's a nightime mission. Thank god!

Sounds (and looks) just superb. :D

All what I find using google is blurry. I hope that isn't bannable.

EDIT: Oh shit ignore this then. I guess I'll have to grab the mag when I can.

Is it a replacement for the Battle Rifle, or does that remain in the game? I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the DMR in the Beta.

Also Dax, how you can determine the DMR is 100X better than the battle rifle is beyond me. The Battle Rifle is what makes Halo multiplayer fun for me, so any tinkering with it's abilities are going to get my ears perked, let alone if they scrap it. It seems sometimes you like to shit on the BR just to go against the flow.

Mere excitement. The DMR sounds better than the BR, though.

If only one weapon out of an entire game make said game fun for you, you should look somewhere else.

Bungie has not, and will not, ever put so much focus on one gun as HaloGAF does with the BR. No matter how much the majority of HaloGAF wants it that way.

By that comment I meant if Halo 3 was constantly AR starts I would not play it. Different strokes for different folks. Thanks for the advice anyway Dax oh lord of Halo but I'll continue to play.

I still think the DMR sounds cool. Just wondering if it's inclusion means the scrapping of the Battle Rifle. Of course if the AR has evolved in it's design as much as it's aesthetics, we may not need the BR.

BR is in. The DMR slots in between the Sniper Rifle and the BR on the range/power continuum.

My apologies, but I wasn't sure whether I should've taken your comment at face value or not.

I'm glad we are moving back to a one shot weapon for mid range combat. As much as I <3 the BR, burst fire has some problems,

a) it makes headshots too easy
b) it muddys the water as to how much damage i've done, and that makes things confusing, which leads to some of the "OMG, Shot him 10 times and he killed me in 2 shots" whining.
3) the timing of the three shots makes glitching easier.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
Out of all the weapons thus far, besides the DMR, I'm interested in the needle rifle.

If you only need 3 hits to trigger the needle explosion, that thing could potentially be OP as all heck.

Ok no worries. I'm no Juices, I just enjoy the competitive gameplay the Battle Rifle brings. You're right though, the DMR would probably fill the gap of the Battle Rifle should it be purged.

Also I can make a pretty assured guess that the armour modifiers will be placed on the map similar to overshield and active camo currently. This would promote map control which fits Halo's play style, whilst incorporating the new additions of Reach. They will definitely be in multiplayer at some point due to their activation with the X button.

Totally wasn't expecting the U-shaped covenant dropships to make a comeback. My eyes got watery from the awesome of seeing the shots with them flying overhead the fights (against elites) halo 1 style. Oh gosh. Come out now!!!!!!!!!!

I'm still so fucking glad Elites are back to being the primary antagonists-- where they would've always stayed if it were up to me-- and that they will once again speak alien gibberish.

The DMR will finally allow us to relieve the E3 2003 single-shot goodness before it was so cruelly taken from us. Wonder what that means for the Carbine, but perhaps the Needle Rifle is actually its replacement (sort of).

Can't say I'm all too pleased with the return of health packs, but I'm willing to give Bungie the benefit of doubt. Hopefully, they've implemented a less intrusive way of conveying the fact you're mortally wounded than ODST's idiotic red-screen filter and incessant beeping.

It's also remarkable how significant a visual leap over Halo 3, (which I always found perfectly acceptable, poor image quality aside), Reach is Can't wait to behold some snazzy nighttime lighting now that we'll finally have some proper nocturnal missions again.

It's a shame there weren't any details on the changes to the AR. It's possible there hasn't been any (which would be disappointing), but usually if there are aesthetic changes there are gameplay changes.

Are you sure? Looking at the context that statement is found in, it looks like it's just helping describe the DMR.

:D

Enemies don't speak English.
:D

I though this was MP info, like how the H3 reveal introduced us to High Ground, Snowbound, and Valhalla, six months before the beta. Only four months until the beta this time, when will we be getting MP info?

Oh and Shishka, does this mean H3 Seven won't have any DRM? :D

Not bad, not bad at all.

Multiple spartans, larger scale battles, Elites, additional gameplay choices, a touch of civilian life and perhaps some interesting charaters for once!

As for the graphics, they look pretty good. Character models have recieved a big upgrade (they needed them), and as long as they have smoothed out the image (no jaggyz plz) then I'll be more than happy. If the animation is better, that's a bonus.

My last hope is for Bungie to shake up the stale multiplayer. I've been playing the same MP game for years now, and Bungie can surely throw something interesting in. I have faith!

I am liking what I see, but everything is soo blurry. Can somebody PM me with their source?

I think the most exciting part of the article may be the little bit about animations, and how Bungie has started to use MoCap, and added tech to blend animations better. No more popsicle MC when turning, and actual acceleration animation when sprinting. That is going to make things pretty awesome. It reminds me of how cool it was when we first saw IK used in Halo CE, and watching marines hold position in a warthog was so goddamn cool.
