Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Self Induced said:
It looks like a fan is trying to take his own favorite things and features from each of the previous Halo games and is mashing them together instead of focusing on what makes the game fun and improving upon it. It just looks like a blinged-out version of Halo 3. You know, "bigger, better, more bad-ass." That's all fine and good, but I'm tired of Halo 3. I don't want to play Halo 3 with a new coat of paint when Reach comes out. I want to play a better game than Halo 3 was.

I mean, I can only judge what I've seen, and an early preview isn't going to show much. But from what they HAVE shown, it looks like a lot of the stuff could have been taken right out of some early Halo 3 builds - stuff like design concepts and variations. The guns, the environment, the vehicles, and even the character models of the marines and enemies look like they've been imported from Halo 3 and slightly touched-up. I understand its the same universe and all, but the game doesn't really look any better as a whole - just slightly different visually. But that's the main problem with mods - it may look different but you're still playing the same damn game. Hey guys we have a ship that does the same thing as the Pelican, but its called a Falcon! Hey check it out guys if you liked armor perms, well now there are several Spartans with completely different armor! We even gave the grunts their own armor perms, and for some reason we also changed the look of the AR! And we brought back health!

A few decisions, like making the pistol a one-shot weapon again or going back to two grenade types, I'm happy to hear about though - and its about time we finally get a needler rifle cause I've been waiting for this bad boy since Halo 2. All I'm saying is it smells like Bungie is really really ready to move on from Halo. I wonder how the new IP is coming along...

I really hope they haven't revealed all the new weapons. Halo needs a huge boost in terms of its weapon sandbox...well, useful weapons, that is.

Wow I'm for sure going to be borrowing my brother's copy of ODST to get in the beta for this. The SP sounds awesome, and I'm hoping they put just as much thought and effort into the MP! :D

Can't wait for details!!

Honestly, I only really care about it running at least 720p/1080i at least. Ever since I upgraded to 1080p I just cannot play ODST or 3. It just looks terrible.

Halo: CE skewed too far toward long-range combat IMO, so I spent most of the time looking down the zoom of the pistol or hunting for the sniper-rifle.
I call this style of gameplay "Halo." Or "awesome."

Played Halo 2 customs with some GAF folk tonight. Twas awesome. Would have been better with more numbers tho. If folks are up for that later this week, we should make it so.

Apparently that isnt halo to the majority of this thread. They want to run at you with their non scoped weapons while holding their triggers down.

I don't like you.

On topic now though. Just looked at all the info and tried to catch up on most of these last 10 pages. First off: F*** all of you who said they wouldn't be Spartan III's (except for Jorge obviously). I was right dammit! :) Still laughing at all of you who said "Spartan III" was a typo.

Second: Eazy, I can't believe I am saying this, but you need to chill out as Dax said. Don't be so emo if there isn't a BR. The gun didn't exist at the time anyways. I also hope you realize that it is very likely there will be no chopper. I wasn't sure if you were joking or not, but I would bet on there being no brutes or brute weaponry and vehicles in this game since they said that there would be no spike grenades. Anyways, we don't want a Halo 3: Redux do we?!

Third: Jorge was born on Reach? Interesting. Wonder if that will be brought up at all. Also, what's the deal with all these Spartans being born in different years? Usually it seems that every batch of Spartans who are trained together are born in the same year. Makes me wonder about how many different groups of Spartans we have yet to hear of.

And fourth: This is directed at NOKYARD. Before you revealed Clippy, I had always seen it as this:
Clippy.png

So whereas the nose on yours would be the unibrow on mine, and then he has a nose, and then the mouth farther down. That's what I can't unsee anyways haha.

That shit was rough for me. No bumper jumper + different movement (momentum, speed, etc.) had me feeling like a complete nub. Though automatically getting headshots with those snipers had me feeling MLG :p That headshot hit box in H2 is off the hook!

Wasn't the BR in Contact Harvest (set way before Reach)? Maybe I'm just mistaking it with all those DMRs, needle rifles, and skirmishers I was reading about in The Fall of Reach...

It's not so much that I care if the BR is carried over, but Halo's already limited mid-range weapon pallete doesn't need trimming.

I do realize that the chopper won't be in the game. I just hope vehicular combat doesn't devolve into warthogs and ghosts holding down the trigger at each other until one dies. As far as Halo 3: Redux. We are still getting plasma pistols, magnums, ARs, snipers, etc. so I don't know why I'd be excited if one of the most awesome aspects of Halo 3 isn't being carried over while all the other stuff is.

Trasher, about the brutes not being in Reach, I personally do not mind them being gone, however why in the world cant we have a game with both enemies? I thought they could be used together for some massive battles. The Elites would be the commanding forces in the skirmishes, while the brutes would be used to run at you [push you back], yes I understand we get a new species [the jackal's cousin or w/e] but its still a jackal. I am not sure why they wouldnt be able to use both brutes and Elites in the battles. That would have been awesome. However I do not care either way.

The way that the new enemies look I would almost think they are to replace the brutes, they look more animalistic. I expect to see forms of them that will rush you and have some more sparatic movement possibly. I was never a fan of the brutes because really to me they never seemed as furocious as they looked. I wanted them to knocking over shit constantly and cutting the distance. Cut you off when you move and possible move more ape like when they ran. Having them run upright I felt was an interesting design choice, I felt it made them less menacing but it did serve well for the story to have them favored over the elites (they had to appear somewhat intelligent).

I personally don't care if we do or don't have brutes. I'm just happy that the elites are back. I always preferred battling them compared to brutes. Are there even any documented events that tell of brutes and elites working together in battle? Just curious if they can even get along together in this sort of situation since I don't believe we have ever seen or heard of it happening.

You people act as if Halo 3 was a crime against humanity. I respect that your opinions that you enjoy Halo CE better than the other games and that the brutes are inferior to the elites, but "Halo 3: Redux" just because they bring back brute weapons and vehicles (many of which where fun to use)? Come on. It's still going to be a Halo game, which will include certain things.

And while I certainly wouldn't buy it at full price if it was just a graphical upgrade, if Reach is going to be a 'redux' in terms of having the same spirit as 3 (cinematic moments coupled with open ended gameplay) and including weapons like the hammer and vehicles like the chopper, then sign me the fuck up, because I LOVED those things.

Anyway, I agree with Nutter. While Halo Wars may not necessarily count as canon, it's placed 20 years before Halo CE and it had Brutes in it. I don't know just why CE didn't have any (I presume that it was an elite only ship that followed them, so no brutes aboard due to specism), but since this is a planet wide invasion, I don't see why they cannot put both Elites and Brutes there. They can even work together, if they would get over their prejudice against each other, which would make for an epic fight.

Is there going to be an AI in this game? Doesn't look like it =\
Maybe Oonsk will be a sidekick of sorts :lol

Seems like they're going for an Oldschool kind of thing. But a modern oldschool, if that makes sense.

What's awesome about this is that clearly Bungie listens to the fans and they're trying to fix most of the things they can for reach.

Unfortunately, my wish of an AR only game will not be fulfilled =(

What about firefight? They said if people liked it in ODST, they'd include it in Reach.
If it does get included, I hope they fix it. Finding people to play with is awful, and the time between waves ruins the pacing.

I loved Halo 3. That's not what I was going for when I said "Halo 3: Redux." That was more sarcasm than anything because obviously we are going to get a lot of the same things from the previous games. Was just trying to point out that we will likely not have any brutes, and therefore no brute weaponry. Here's hoping that they DO add some new and worthwhile weaponry though.

SMH

It seems like people are forgetting this is a videogame. Brutes weren't in CE because Bungie hadn't created them yet. They weren't on Reach because Bungie hadn't put them in a game yet. The BR wasn't on Reach because Bungie hadn't created it yet.

This is why I'm really skeptical about how far into the "this franchise is a universe" thing that MS is pushing. I don't care what what kind of Bungie does within the fiction as far as continuity and all that other stuff. Skirmishes have obviously never been mentioned in the Halo universe nor have the needle rifle or the DMR. I don't expect Bungie to retcon some explaination as to why these weapons and creatures never popped up anywhere else. A single sacrifice to the gameplay in order to maintain some story element is a step in the wrong direction. I believe those at Bungie feel the same way and have no problem adding shit to the "well orchestrated universe." Sometimes they'll hid away changes within fictional explainations (ie no dual wielding in ODST because they aren't spartans) but Berton even said it was just because he hates dual wielding. I fully expect a handful of brand new vehicles that were never seen before and effectly popped out of the Halo space-time continuum to add extra awesomeness to Reach. There's no reason Brutes can't appear on Reach because they'll only be one of a dozen things that were never mentioned in The Fall of Reach. That said, the skirmishers look to have replaced them so Brutes are most likely gone.

That would be disgusting.

What do you guys like about the AR so much? My problem with the damn thing is how there is no headshot bonus with it. All these machine guns [function wise] , SMG, AR, Spikers, why isnt there a headshot bonus. All guns these days, scoped or non scoped are headshot cappable. I want these spray and pray weapons to have some sort of bonus for the headshot capable guys. So that way I know if I am shooting at someone who is just running at me with his AR, that my AR pointed towards his head would mean I kill him first.. Not just who started to spray his AR at the other first. : [

In Halo 3 doesn't someone die quicker if you hit them in the head with an AR when they have no shields rather than say shooting them in the leg with no shields?

Actually no.. They die quicker with the AR [compared to the BR] no matter where you shoot them. In fact I have had many people run away from me when they have no shields and I am still pumping them with BR bullets, but when I have an AR, a tiny little spray from the gun will kill them. :lol As it is there is no benefit of shooting someone in the head with the AR.

So the same burst from an AR to the head compared to a burst from the AR to the leg will kill someone with no shields?

i am not sure i like the fact Covenant won't speak english.

Well, it makes sense, but being able to understand them when they yelled stuff at each other did great things to immersion.

other than that, sounds very promising. The series has been in need for a significant overhaul since...well, halo 1.

Yup yup. The only weapons that deal extra damage (and even then it's only headshot vs. not headshot) are the snipers, the BR, and the carbine. With every other gun it doesn't matter if you're shooting their tippy-toes, their chest, or their grill; same amount of damage.

They could at least make weapons like the Plasma Rifle more useful. Will we see the Carbine again? Or will the Elites primary weapon be the Plasma Rifle, as it was in Halo: CE?

I disagree, I felt a lot was lost when the elites spoke English in Halo 2/3, the grunts always spoke English and it was used for comedic effect, but when the elites started speaking English it took a lot of their mystery away from them

While I like giving automatics a damage multiplier, it would eventually give the game an (Even more?) random feeling. "Hey, WTF, I sprayed randomly with my SMG, and that guy went down much more slowly than normal." I mean, we already see that with lag, and we all bitch, now imagine if it was determined by lag and some random spread pattern from the gun.

It could work on the AR though, since the AR is relatively accurate if used properly. Bungie could also compensate for that with a another type of hit animation, sound, or UI element to let the player know why the guy is dying/faster/slower than normal.

But why do I like the AR? I like the sound it makes, I like the way it feels when I properly pulse the trigger to get a short-midrange kill, I like that in AR start games, people seem to move more. I like how it mows down the flood and grunts in single player.

Seriously? The AR has some of the lamest sound of any gun in the game.

Well, Halo Wars is as much canon as the novels and comics are, so I don't see why people would discount it.

The Brutes joined the Covenant way, way before they encounter the humans, they just didn't have a equal role until after the Heresey. They only commanded a few ships, but they were the ones that first encountered humans at Harvest.

There is equal argument, story wise, as to if they would be on Reach or not. I would argue that there were at least a few, but maybe on a different side of the planet from Noble Team.

Nutter, you're not a troll, but I'm really tired of this kind of statement; there are DEFINITELY positions between "all scopes all the time" and "spray and pray". Those of us who don't want to spend the entire game playing long-range cat-and-mouse are NOT all interested in running at you with our non-scoped weapons while holding our triggers down. We're interested in the variety that Halo has always offered. And the "if you're not with us, you're against us" attitude is wearing thin.

It will be replaced by the Elite version, the Mandible.

The long and mid range combat in CE is enjoyable in large part because the enemy has no ability to fire back at that range; it's a one-sided shooting gallery. The best they have is a plasma rifle. :lol

I was just about to say something similar. It's getting quite tiring, and one of the reasons why we see people come and go quickly rather than sticking around to discuss the new information. Any person that comes by, wanting discuss the information, and if he enjoys aspects of Halo the majority of HaloGAF don't enjoy, he's immediately jumped on, along the lines of "HOW DARE YOU!" Or that person is made fun of, it's ridiculous.

I'm really happy to hear the mention of human insurrectionists. All the Halo games so far have portrayed the Haloverse's humans as one big happy bunch united under the banner of the UNSC seemingly until the Covenant come along and nearly wipe them out.

As anyone with even a slight interest in the Halo expanded universe will tell you, this is simply not the case. In fact, the Spartan II project was originally created to lethally stamp out well funded and armed insurrectionists and anti-UNSC rebel groups as signs were pointing out to further escalating human infighting and warfare. It could also be argued that the Insurrectionists were key to the UNSC winning the Covenant war, heh.

While I doubt we will ever learn more about human society in the era just before the Covenant war, the fact that Bungie have included a reference to it makes me smile.

More Halo= sign me up. I think the scans look good. I'm not looking for bungie to reinvent the wheel here. Same core gameplay + few new weapons, better graphics, nice large encounters (two scarabs) + some tight corner battles (Crows nest) is a win for me.

I could do without the useless magnum and equipment in H3. I like H2s more simplistic map styles/geometry and battle rifle heavy nature.

H2 MP maps + H3 weapons + .5(H1 campaign) + .5(H3 campaign) = Instant win.

Spartan II's were all taken when they were seven years old.

The Spartan III program took pretty much any pre-pubescent kid they could find that had the genetic make-up to survive the augmentations. The first class of Spartan III's had conscripts as young as 4 years old, and judging by Carter's DOB, as old as 12.

Not only for the Spartans, but without the years of ship-to-ship space combat the Insurrectionists forced the UNSC to fight, they would have been totally unprepared for the Covenant armada. They wouldn't have been even able to mount the slightest defence, and all Human worlds would have been glassed or humanity enslaved in very short order.

For a dumb RTS, it's balls amount of fun though. Even the story is enjoyable and the godly movie quality cutscenes are great.

This is the one I disagree most with and, I think, the fulcrum around which our debates over weapon balance as a whole has been circling. I think the AR is the perfect starting weapon - strong enough to earn you kills, but not so powerful that you forgoe picking up weapons on the map (which is what often happened with the CE pistol).

The problem doesn't really lie with the AR itself. It's that you have BRs around the map because people like BRs, and once you die with a BR and can't find one again, the other team can pound you from a distance. Then when you have the upper hand and push map control with BRs you whorde all the power weapons and well there goes the game for the other team. I think one of the brilliant parts of Halo MP (maybe the most brilliant) is the strategy created around keeping power weapons while holding certain points of the map. It's not like COD where you can run around with some camo gun and knife people in the back the whole game. With the AR you cannot effectively play the game the way you should be able to. The AR is useful and should be in Reach, but not as a starting weapon. I don't care if you give me that new dong gun, a long distance Dax rifle or whatever as long as I have a chance at pushing people back when they start hammering my base.

AR meets a shotgun at close range, it loses.
AR meets a BR at medium range, it loses.
AR meets carbine at medium range, it loses.
AR meets needler at medium-close to medium range, it loses.
AR meets dual-wielded anything at close range, it loses.

Radar frequently nullifies distance. The appearance or disappearance of radar in Reach MP will be a HUGE reveal. It would be ballsy to the tenth degree to totally remove it from all gametypes.

The HW campaign isn't really tactical, with 2 players it just isn't really. Having more than 4 players trying to out smart the AI? :lol

For a dumb RTS, it's balls amount of fun though. Even the story is enjoyable and the godly movie quality cutscenes are great.

Sweet. Would you like to co-op one of these days?

And unfortunately, I seem to have started an AR discussion. I was kidding! I did not want an AR only game! :lol :lol
