Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Testing CE would have been so awesome. See, I would have loved to have been there at the start.

This thread is making me feel like a little kid. :p

It was a blast. Imagine playing Halo:CE MP matches for 8 hours a day and getting paid. We did that. :lol I also spent weeks playing the single player for hours and hours. Good times.

Did you get to test the Halo: CE pistol that was super nerfed before the late change that doubled the damage?

You would have been among the first to realize MP was epic. It took us "regular" gamers a while to figure it out with System Link.

Got any comments on the 6 shot pistol (since we seem to be headed back in that direction)? Did you ever get to fool around with the gravity rifle? I envy you like you wouldn't believe.

Also, re: XBL Halo 1 courtesy of 343i (please please please Frankie)... just do this and the world will worship you. I would pay a silly amount of MS points to play Damnation and Hang Em over Xbox Live. I don't need Uncharted 2 graphics (especially not if it means Guardian-esque grenade swallowing ramps) - just a move into the XBL era. And if co-op could be made to work over Live too? Well then, aces, stinkles, fucking aces. And please don't Griesemer the sniper rifle.
Perfect Dark dev said:
Well, the starting process was we took the original N64 game and had it running on the 360, with the original graphics. And really from there, uh, we went around upgrading all the textures, replacing the character and weapon models, and just adding little tweaks and polish aspects here and there to keep it up to date. The key really was not to go overboard and try and make everything look like Call of Duty

Edit: ^Haha good timing on the Frankie plea (also, Ssparks, great minds think alike).

So I had a meeting yesterday for my Co-op placement for my 3rd year of university. The Co-op office aren't really used to dealing with the games industry here in Ireland and last year only 50% of the Multimedia and Computer Games Development course got placement. This time rond they actually had a few things extra they wanted us to put on our C.Vs... namely, a keen interest in the industry outside of college including time spent on developers forums and other sites related to the industry.

Does this mean I get to put Gaf and Bnet on my C.V?? Brilliant hahaha.

I too thought the Halo 3 PP was from CE compared to the reach one. I remember looking back on Theater the other day and looking at the lighting of the weapons as you ran around with shadows being cast everywhere. The Beam Rifle was bloody majestic in appearance.

I think I first played CE when I was 11. I couldn't get past the first level. Then my friends and I tried playing MP, I think we got motion sickness or something and never touched the game again.
Halo 2, on the other hand, we played quite a bit of. I was always the best even though I didn't own the game :D
I play Halo: CE when I was 13, back when the Xbox 360 came out in 2005. The first game I played on the 360 was Halo: CE. Actually, one of the reasons I wanted a 360 was to play the Halo games in a higher resolution than found on the Xbox.

If you wonder why folks put you down for being a kid, re-read that sentence.

Digital Hero, you were a Halo : CE tester? Must have been one of the most fun jobs to have back then. When you were testing it, did you ever think the game would have gone on and done so well?

That was one of my highlights playing the campaign. I got to that point with not a whole lot of ammo. I must have died abot 15 times at least. Every single time the scenario played out differently (only in Halo could that happen)! It was truly satisfying to get past it!

Brutes in MP would certainly be a secret worth hiding from us for now... but a boy can dream on :p
I've gotten the B.U.N.G.L.E. set for tomorrow night, what other maps & gametypes are you getting?

I must be the only one who loves push to talk. I like not having to constantly toggle mute on my mic. I have a cheap one with the mute on a dongle on the cord, so it's kind of a PITA.

The new xbox headsets with the Mute in the cord are retarded. I prefer the mute right near the controller jack. In Halo 2 I became a master at toggling mute on and off between the game and my cell phone while my girlfriend ran her mouth.

And also to mute while I whined like a 12 year old girl after most deaths.

I never really paid attention to that picture before. It actually looks like a real, potentially dangerous space weapon now. I love it.

Definitely.

However, even in Halo Wars, with Ensemble's great talent, and the oversight of Frankie et. al., the brutes didn't depart from what was already established and weren't scary even in the early war. I doubt we're going to see *scary* cave-man brutes.
I'm hoping that at the very least, using their own language instead of the wrestler-voices can make them seem more scary/intimidating
"He was my lover!"
. A dirty, guttural language, complete with terrifying howls like at the beginning of Sierra 117.

I think I want to cry old man tears. I was 28 when Halo: CE came out.

Have you ever used the Halo 2 Plantronics headset? That thing was amazing, such a nice headset to use... I miss it.

Wow... You tested Halo: CE. I am extremely jealous.

Are you allowed to discuss much about it? What were some of the biggest changes you saw in development. Was there anything didn't end up making it into the final game that you wish did?

The Halo 2 Plantronics headset was superb. Unfortunately, I broke mine so I can no longer use it when I fire Halo 2 on the OG Xbox. Sad face

On the dongle that is in the controller...

I don't think there was anything on the headset itself, though there may have been a small switch.

Oh, I'm talking about 360 headsets. There aren't any good ones and the standard Microsoft ones now have the mute and volume on the cord.

<3 that plantronics. I'm sad that mine broke while I was moving back to CA after college.

It was my standard hands free for the car too. I looked awesome :lol :lol

The mute button was on the adapter you had to buy to make ANY headset work with an original controller. (There's a company that makes one that works with headsets like this for the 360, as well.)

I loved this headset - I wore out 4 of them over the years, but not just for Halo; I used one as my phone headset in my day-to-day work.

Edit: didn't see the '360 only' requirement until after I wrote this - here's the adapter I was talking about. Plugs into a 360 controller, has mute/volume controls, and can use any 2.5mm-jacked headset (one you might have for your cellphone, for example) as an input.

Yea, something like that is what I'm looking for. Thanks.

I've been using the first party wireless mic for the 360 for over 3 years now, same one. Thing is a trooper.

Bought this at PAX last year. Never looked back.
A friend of mine picked up a pair of Tritons last year at PAX.

I gave them a try, but found I liked the Astro's much more... I would highly recommend them to anyone.

The A40's are just much more elegant I find.

To each their own though.

How much did those run at PAX? I'm going to it in a few weeks and have no idea what to expect.

Most of HaloGAF doesn't remember me much these days, I played long long time ago. Looking to get back into it shortly and become full timer again for Reach.

Yup, I hear the Astro A40's are amazing. They've become the default headset to use by players on the MLG Pro-Circuit so they've really grown in popularity. There's even an MLG branded headset now.

They really are... They add so much to the game. The immersion is incredible when you have these things on, I really cannot say I have ever experienced anything close to it.

Not only that, but they are perfect for late night/early morning gaming... I can wake up early before my girlfriend and play video games or watch TV without worrying about disturbing her... I love it.

And yeah, they have had the MLG Branded ones for a while. The ones I have are actually the MLG Branded ones.

I have a pair of Bose headphones that I sometimes use for gaming. But I live alone and the thought of me not being able to hear someone coming in my house and stabbing me in the neck freaks me out.

The games did sound quite amazing though.

I've got tritons and they are alright sometimes sounds get muddy most of the time I can blame it on poor sound design in a game but other it's clearly the phones.

I will pay $50 a month for dedicated servers. "Prefer Good Connection" does not mean give me Hungarian, German and UK opponents and have one of them pull host JESUS CHRIST

Astro A40's are AMAZING.

They have sponsored me through tournaments and I'm pretty tight with the company (/ego building) and they honestly have an amazing product and great customer service.

Plus, what's better than buying headphones from the same people who designed the xbox?

PAX East? We should definitely meet-up. I'll have other HaloGafers in tow.

Been a while since I seen an old headset, forgot that they use to go behind the head but damn were those things fragile, I broke the mic holder once when I was swapping it from left to right side, a friend who broke his before me stuck his mic to the side of a baseball cap :lol

It also shows how cheap the new 360 headsets look, so tacky.

1. Love the avatar. 2. Tag story: can we have it?

I've been wanting A40s or something similar for a while, but I don't want something so expensive to get wrecked.

Depends what you use your headphones for. If I were going to buy headphones to play all my games I'd invest in the A40s or something better, but for strictly Halo I've had no problems with my Turtle Beach headset.

Comfortable and relatively cheap.

Oooh headset discussions for Halo!!!

Question: Can the A40s or Turtle Beach set work in conjunction with a surround sound receiver? I have a surround sound setup right now in our new place but the master bedroom is directly above the living room and the fiance has complained about the sound traveling to the bedroom. I already warned her about Reach coming out soon with its gauranteed all night sessions and she offered to buy me some new headsets so that she can sleep in peace! :D

In short, I want to be able to easily switch between the surround sound speaker setup and the headset setup when powering up the 360. Do either headset support switching sound output natively or will I need to invest in some more HDMI/toslink splitters. Any thoughts would be appreciated as it may save my future marriage.

My current setup is HDMI from the 360 to the receiver for both sound and video with another hdmi connection from the receiver to the tv.

Man, I'm not one to nitpick and it's obvious just looking at it, seeing how pixelated it is. Looks really weird.

Not really seeing the pixels you speak of but that specific render does have a bit of a chalky/pastely quality that makes it seem like it's just concept art. Looks fine in game though.

I can see what you mean. It looks like the textures have been a bit over compressed, or the light maps just have kind of a weird texture to them. There's something that looks a little weird about it, but I'm not sure if it's the in game textures, or the photoshoping done to it for that image. Overall looks a ton better than the H3 version though, and the small bit of texture weirdness probably won't be noticeable.

Did anyone else notice the synthetic arm (i.e. Kat) during the reload animation of the pistol?

Combine this with Bungie saying you can bring your customized Spartan into MP matches (I'm assuming the LW). I am confused.
