Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

OK, after watching the HD video from Bungie, I gotta say that my outlook on the trailer is a bit better. Not going to comment on the graphics due to them not being completely finished (except for the Mark V ish armor. I can somewhat see them as being Mark V, but I'm not really digging the extra attachments and stuff to them. :/) .

For the Characters, Noble Six (??. Spartan at the beginning) seems to be another strong, silent type, which I'm happy for. The Commander, Carter will probably be a favorite character of mine, and the Sniper seems like he'll be awesome (really tried not to compare them to their ODST counterparts). Not so sure about the Woman Spartan though. Doesn't really appear for too long, but I do hate the design of the guy with the Skull on his helmet. Seems like he isn't in the Reach logo, so he probably dies. The guy in the "thruster/bulky suit" really can't be commented on from me, really.

And I just realized this post was longer than I expect it to be, and I will probably have 21 questions/criticisms from most people on my comments. Oh well. :/

EDIT: Marathon-esque gauntlet on Noble Six/Lone Wolf in picture. Awesome. Also, M6D? :D

Real-time? Didn't they say the Halo 3 reveal trailer was "real-time"? I can't believe it, even though this one actually looks worse than the one from three years ago.

I skimmed the last few pages to see if it was posted but I didn't see anything...

That was surprisingly bland. All I saw was some mo-cap animation of a couple different characters with some decent shading. The effect in the clouds at the end was cinematic, though the quality of story for the Halo games has gotten pretty rocky in the past.

Oh well, just another game until something exceptional shows otherwise.

It looks like Halo 3 with anti-aliasing.

No one doubted the lighting of Halo 3. It still stands up to being one of the premiere titles from that perspective. It was the horrible aliasing and last gen animations that made it look like a marginal improvement over Halo 2 graphically.

I just care that it has 4 player splitscreen.

More of this please. Nourish me.

New engine is a HUGE step up from Halo 3/ODST. Very impressed with the HD version.

Looks like each Spartan has their name and number on their breastplate. Only name I could make out was the Commanders': Carter. Couldn't quite see the chick's or the heavy gunner's. The "lone wolf" Spartan appeared to be the only one lacking the name and number on his gear. Just another obvious sign that this is the Spartan you will play as.

the improvement to the animation is the most noticeable thing I got from this trailer. feels much more natural now. I hope the rest of the game can keep up that quality.

The new Rookie, perhaps. Though I was hoping he's be the Ensign, or perhaps the Spinal Tap drummer. We need a new Number Six! Again!

Now I remember why I don't post on the gaming side :lol

Oh, and:

Good one, Bungie.
Thank you. Slurp, slurp.

Just watched the HD version, and there is no way this can be realtime. Not a hint of aliasing in sight, that's just not possible for any console. It's at best a high res rendered version of a realtime cutscene (like the Halo 3 teaser was), at worse CG using the game assets.

the trailer was so awesome graphically that it forced thekad out of his halo trolling retirement :lol

edit: and just to be clear i don't think the in-game graphics will look nearly as good as that trailer leads us to believe.

It is a huge step, though the Halo 3 engine was so far behind other graphical powerhouse games that this seems to only really be pulling even to expectations. I would say it lies somewhere between Alan Wake and MW2 in terms of the lighting and shading. Hope it performs well in large open areas.

Looks fantastic in HD. Music is great, though with Marty at the helm that's a given. I don't get the criticism of the dialogue. Sounded fine. I really liked the MIA nod. And I hated the dialogue in "The Package." The most tantalizing thing about the trailer is what happens just afterward. They seem to be heading towards something big. And this is the opening cutscene!

I've played quite a bit of Killzone 2 and I don't remember any obvious aliasing in it.

Hey guys, I heard this isn't real time. Those guys at bungie sure like to mislead people.

hurr hurr

If you can't tell that's realtime, you should quit gaming.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
I don't remember Halo 3 cutscenes having aliasing. But then I have not played the campaign since getting a HD tv.

The dialogue actually reminds me a lot of the film Hurt Locker... especially since one of the spartans appears to be "the new guy" and his known for his "lone wolf stuff."

I think the people comparing the dialogue to Gears are way off. The dialogue in gears is what the dialogue in Madden would sound like if the football players were mic'ed.

I think Bungie answered every complaint about the old engine. Animation, human faces, image quality(looks very clean), grittyness, it's so slick looking and it's extremely impressive a game with presumably Halo type scale and features looks this good. Seeing this is bittersweet, it makes me sad it's Bungie's last Halo, the gameplay was never in question for me they've always delivered on that but they've finally nailed the graphics and got the animation sorted and now they're done. The trailer erased all doubts for me about the game, it's gonna be an epic swan song, a fitting end of an era.

This angle is so logically sound. :lol

This is what I'm thinking as well.

Hmm, so far we have Spartans 052 (big heavy gunner dude, first name is George), 320 (the chick with one real arm, her name looks to be about 4 or 5 letters long), 259 (Carter, the commander), the painted face dude sharpening his knife, the sniper, and then the "lone wolf" of course.

So theyre just lying huh?

Deception is extremely common in te gaming industry. But theyre not just gonna outright lie dude.

Even with reality goggles in check, I think the game looks pretty good.
Animation is leagues above Halo3.

the lack of any aliasing at all is kinda odd. the thin angled wires holding up some of the poles are completely smooth in the 720p trailer.

legit question: is that possible with something simple like 2X MSAA? or is this trailer pulling off more than that?

Yeah, Bungie/Microsoft would never purposely mislead us. They're good people.

You pulled this same crap prior to Halo 3's release.

I don't think it's cool for these studios to claim something is what it isn't. This isn't realtime and the game won't look like that.

Just watched it again, animation are really slick. Game looks great. I can't wait until the Mid-January Media blitz to find out more about the gameplay.
