Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Another question regarding assassinations:

How many variations are there? Do they change depending on the weapon or AA (besides the jetpack example above)? For example, would a Gravity Hammer Assassination use the blade on the back, or would Assassinating using Active camo result in a "stealthy" throat-cut, or something else besides the standard combat knife sticks we have seen?

Wait, jet pack mid-air assassinations? We are spoiled rotten. :D

I'm not to worried about the weapon and AA tie ups, mostly I can see myself choosing the AA I want and hunting down the perfectly complimentary weapon if I don't spawn with it.

Although I foresee far too many stealth shotgun deaths in my future.

I highly doubt that light, or any light for that matter, can be destroyed. Reach is still using static lightmaps for their lighting system.

hmm, i seem to remember bungie, or some article, mentioning that there was loads more environment destruction in reach, including lights. ths was after the first vidoc reveal...

What about assassinations while you're is in full Sprint?

For example, you're in full Sprint and you're approaching someone from behind, you can hold down the melee button and you would tackle them and knife them or something. :D

My bro is watching some Reach vid on the dashboard... latest Inside Xbox.

Brian said that we won't be changing perspectives in game, always play as Noble 6.

Screenshots, stats and some surprises for bnet during the beta. Said there would be a subsystem form of Forge. I could be interpreting that wrong but he said pretty much that the beta will feature some small portion of the major features... someone confirm for me.

It's less about Halo Reach not being able to handle it, and more about Bungie not wanting to go in that direction. I could already imagine every classy young gentleman on live shooting every light in a map with brightness settings on the tv cranked up, to try and get an edge over the opponents.

And HAHAHA you guys don't like the name Swordbase HAHAHAHAHA

If by mid-air assassinations, you mean the jetpacker being the assassin, I'd love to see (but probably won't) an animation of you carrying your prey and snapping the neck of that Spartan/Elite.

Kind of like a demented owl on steroids with jets for wings. :lol

Maybe funny isn't the right word. :|

Counterstrike years ago had light switches. What game has that for multiplayer?

Comments like this are beffudling.

There is a difference between

"Zomg the Halo Reach engine can't handle destructible lights!"

and

"Bungie could give a baker's fuck about something that means fuck all in the greater scheme of things in a game that offers a broader package than any other console FPS before it"

you dig?

Watch the latest Inside Xbox on the dashboard. He is asked about Forge for the beta I believe... maybe my fatigue is letting me hear what I want... just someone double check for me please.

He said some we'll be getting portions of the game but specifically mentioned they were holding some stuff back in relation to being asked about Forge.

So no Forge but a large chunk of the multiplayer. No new information there. =\

So it looks like I'm not going to be able to play Halo 2 on the 14th.

Any news on what kind of 'unlock' that will be in Reach for Halo 2 players? Will I have to be playing on April 14th to get it? Or anytime is ok?

I always wanted a game where I could have a shootout in a housing estate of some kind and pull doors open, pull a couch in front of door, or pull a curtain so you kept hidden. I personally feel it is very strategic to have lights that can be switched on/off. Maybe not for Halo but meh, I love interaction.

It was said you needed to have played Halo 2 on the same GT as you'll use in Reach and nothing much more than that.

That's fine, and on some level I agree. Switching the lights off before walking into an ambush would be fuckign great.

But when some says "Halo Reach can't handle destructible lights" it just makes them sound like a juvenile peon.

Who said every Halo 2 player would get something in Reach? IIRC prizes are just for the last person to get a kill in Halo 2 online and the person who sends in an email and guesses or gets closer to the total number of games halo 2 will be played online in it's lifetime. There might be extra prizes for special stuff too, like last stick or something.

I say it to get attention (hopefully the attention of the developers, so they put it in, because I want it), not because I believe it.

It's an exercise of rational self-interest.

How's this instead:

I think it's ironic that Perfect Dark N64 could handle destructable lights, and although Reach obviously could as well, it doesn't.

It doesn't grab your attention as much.

I get you, but yeah, your wording was just icky.

To be honest though, a LOT of games back then added little 'features' to their games that had no affect on gameplay, and were there as bullet points if you will.

I don't think I ever shot out a light in Perfect Dark once. At least not that I can remember.

Unless a developer finds a way to make it a core gameplay mechanic, and incorporate the use of that mechanic into the gameplay properly, what's the point?

for example.

If Bungie were going to allow for taking out light sources then that would mean adjusting the AI of both enemies and NPCs.

They'd need to play differently in the dark, not to mention be blind in the dark as opposed to other games where enemies can see you as if it were daylight. :lol It just doesn't seem like something Bungie wold both implementing into Halo at all, let alone this late in the development cycle.

Its too bad that boneyard is the only map that will have vehicles. Then again, it seems that if any vehicle would work with the other maps it would be a mongoose. And as far as we know the mongoose is not in the beta.

The maps really do seem awesome though. I really hope we can get some more solid details on the maps and what makes them unique tomorrow.

Speculation time.

Invasion = Versus[L4D]/Firefight in 1 mode.

Control 6 Elites, along with "other" AI controlled jackals, grunts, hunters thrown in the mix against 6 spartans.

I do really want something like this. It's a stretch though because its so different from what most people know and love about halo multi-player. But I love firefight and I love l4d versus/scavenge. I think I would mainly just love to play as all the different covenant. They all have their own unique abilities.

The AI in PD does act differently when there are no light sources nearby and if they have nightvision and you decide to flip a lightswitch you temporarily blind them.
Though you freely admit it, you never shot out a light in PD. How were you to know? :p

Also, enemies are NPC's.

"NPCs" typically refers to allies (Marines, etc) or neutrals (Civilians, etc). I think the term comes from RPGs, specifically referring to characters you could go up and talk to, but couldn't kill (Or play as, obviously).

Okay, serious question for bungie: How will you ensure you get enough data on all of the maps, gametypes, armor abilities, and weapons? Will you just keep the delta open longer if you don't get all the info you need? Also, what data are you looking for, other than balancing of weapons and aas, making sure the maps don't have exploitable glitches in the maps, and making sure the gametypes are the right pace and length?

InvincibleAgent said:

No, well. I can remember a time when NPC really wasn't mentioned all that much. It was all AI's, but AI now refers to the more intelligent things as opposed to simply a Non-Player Characters... or so i always thought...

As in... The Arbiter in Halo 3 was an NPC, but he used AI to decide his movements and what not. I am studying this sort of stuff for my degree... T.T 3am folks. I will blame that.

It was said in a previous Bungie Weekly Update that everyone who has played Halo 2 on the same gamertag they use for Reach will have some type of special emblem that shows you've played Halo 2. Urk compared it to something like the B.net symbol that's in Halo 3's lobbies.

One thing I've never been good at choosing is a good looking font. I'm adding some text to label the weapon renders for the beta thread OP, but I can't find a decent looking one (using Gimp). Stuff I use around the office just doesn't quite do it for a Halo thread. :lol

If anyone has some suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

LOL, fucking PDZ 64 and CS have the most retarded "lights off" system ever. Going completely dark like PDZ and CS would fuck up the visual consistency of the environment. If Bungie actually wanted to pull off a "lights off" mechanic they would need to load twice the amount of baked textures for all environments affected, a waste of resources.

Likely because it's a really dumb statement.

"The engine for the new Splinter Cell game can clearly handle segments in which the game turns into Guitar Hero, but it doesn't do that. How lame is that? How dare that game not be like some other game!"

I just finished reading the article. I haven't visited IGN in ages. Good article, but it feels that whoever asked those questions had not been following the information of the game closely. I feel the interviewer could have asked more pressing questions. Anyway, it seems Bungie has a lot to balance with the jetpack and other abilities. If it was any other FPS developer I would say they are dooming themselves, but in Bungie I trust.

For some reason I can't find a link on a normal font site, but that one seems to work. Hanzel is a sort of sci-fi font that is already used on a lot of Halo stuff.
EDIT: I also have the font on my computer. I could try to host it somewhere if you don't want to trust a random site.

Well I don't know about Firefight being in the beta. But I believe it'll be in the final game. Marcus was quoted as saying 'we've never been known to leave a good idea behind'. So I think he is saying Firefight is in, without actually announcing it. Maybe it's a marketing tactic to wait and reveal it later. Who knows. Maybe it's just me (and others) hoping Firefight makes a return.

Also I hope Invasion doesn't replace Firefight. Firefight is fun because it's only cooperative. There is no player vs player. Sometimes gamers want a chaotic, but non competitive game mode to play.

Oh yeah I wasn't expecting Firefight in the Beta at all, I'm talking retail. But I was expecting Firefight to evolve into Invasion, as a gametype where 6 spartans fight waves of Covies and 6 other players take the roles of specialists in the Covenant.
I understand now why having both is good, and I'd love to see both.

Yeah, to be honest that sounds awesome. I'd love to have AI covenant to fight alongside with. I'm not gonna hold my breath on this though. I don't want to be disappointed.

So I just watched the Halo 3 reveal video, and as pumped as I am for Halo Reach(most wanted game since Halo 3), I miss Master Chief, and the Halo theme song. I hope one day we get another Halo with the Chief.

PDZ 64? What are you going on about? Pd zero or the N64 one? lol I don't think you're too familiar with PD to be making such statements. PD 64's light system was actually impressive.

A feature like that in Halo would be cool, but seeing as the game is more a run n gun type shooter it would make little sense. Currently there's no real sense of stealth in Halo - aside from a few select parts - which isn't a knock on the game its just not Halos style.

I can't say what things will be like in Reach but if its reminiscent of H1/2/3/ODST then it would do little to the game-play. On the other hand Reach does have night vision and there seemed to be a "sneaking" part in the vidoc so who knows. I would just feel weird shooting out lights without a silenced weapon[assuming]; of course the AI would have to respond to that accordingly otherwise its a pointless feature.

What we should be lobbying for is WEATHER! I just want to play a really boisterous thunder and rain doused campaign - like Hard Rain in L4d2.

That's the one thing I think Halo could use. Snow, Pouring rain, fog, extreme wind etc.

Lucky for you, the team at Bungie spent their time putting in Forge mode instead of destructible lights with no tangible effect on gameplay. With this neat mode you can add/remove anything you want from a MP map, its crazy!
I wish Perfect Dark had a feature like that.... too bad.
Interesting, wouldn't you say?
