anyone here see this? its geting shitted on @ rotten and really dont want to waste my money if its not any good (since i saw like 4 movies a thte theater last weekend :lol )

My only qualm with seeing this is that I feel like I've seen the whole movie in the trailers.

Same with Death Race (which I thought looked cool for the first half of the trailer until they started throwing out spoilers like there's no tomorrow) and ESPECIALLY the same with the new Mummy movie (though I doubt I would have seen that anyway).

Not that I've seen the full movies or anything, but honestly if they throw any twists into the movies that aren't already in the trailers it will be reaching MGS2 level out-of-left-fieldness.

I believe the exact words I used to describe Wanted to my wife were "totally balls-out fuck-awesome." After seeing it for herself, she agreed.

Im going with the ballsoutfuckawesome

thanks guys, will be back next week for "choosemalley's free movie night"

I saw Hancock last week, also at an early screening.

I would say the Variety review is pretty spot on, although he doesn't give enough credit to the first half.

Seriously, the first half of the movie is one of the best things I've seen. It's such a great concept and it works really well. Superman as an asshole. It's perfect and often very, very funny.

Then a twist is introduced half way through and it literally ruins everything. All of the charm and humor of the first half go out the window as the movie refocuses on being about the stupid mythology of the character and the rules of his powers. And it's lame.

The draw of the movie is that first half, putting a Superman-type character in a real world and having fun with those possibilities. The second half is just so awful it almost wrecks the entire experience.

Who the fuck was in charge of making these trailers? They've spoiled so many things already, jeez.
What really sucks is that if you GO to the movies, you basically can't avoid them unless you bring in noise-cancelling headphones or something.

I've started to enjoy video games more now that I've actively avoided trailers and too many screenshots. Fewer spoilers, and everything seems new and fresh instead of "Hey, I finally got to the part of the game with IGN screenshot #25!" Unfortunately, that just doesn't work with movies.

One of the writers said in Creative Screenwriting that the movie drew much inspiration from that scene in Superman 3 where evil Supes is flicking peanuts at the bar, breaking shit.

At a whoppingly AWESOME 32% at RT. Some cream of the crop reviews:

Newsweek:
The superhero genre screams for a makeover, or at least a smart deconstruction, but Hancock isn't that movie. It just ups the foolishness ante.

LA Times:
It's a strange feeling to see the summer's most promising premise self-destruct into something bizarre and unsatisfying, but that is the Hancock experience.

Chicago Tribune:
In this highly superheroic summer of Iron Man and the forthcoming The Dark Knight, Hancock can offer only an A-list headliner in a D-list project.

Variety:
This misguided attempt to wring a novel twist on the superhero genre has a certain whiff of The Last Action Hero about it.

Boston Globe:
What does one say about a movie that wants laughs from a shot of one inmate's head up the derriere of another?

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SEE WALL-E AGAIN THIS WEEKEND! It's still at 96%

Surprising turn of events, I really wanted to and still kinda do want to see this, but this is starting to get depressing.

I'm being forced to see this tommorow instead of Wanted or Kung Fu Panda. If I go in with low expectations, I shouldn't be disappointed. Right?

just getting back. It was not the best cut movie ever but I went in not expecting much... I think this is the first time I heard Will Smith curse, for me that was worth the price.

I enjoyed it from beginning to end but I really wished this movie took itself seriously as Batman and Superman movies this was a comedy. Pretty fun if you think of it on that level. Pretty bad if you go in expecting a Superhero movie.

Rated R and more dark would have been very interesting.

If they filmed flashbacks to
Miami 80 years ago it would have been dramatic and epic. A Black man and a White woman in the Racist South yeah I think he should have know the would be a target for a beating or worst. Like I said that alone would have made a very dark movie... that said I really enjoyed that she was his weakness... kinda sad that they cannot be together but with such a long history I think it was wrong that they did not film flashback of many points in History for the two. Stupid move seriously

I hope it does well Will Smith was awesome it was not his fault that the writers failed to flesh out the story. He really did a great job. A cursing Will Smith is some funny shit. a little letdown but still a fun summer movie, the soundtrack made me sit through the credits

So do you ever think for yourself or do you just listen to what pretentious critics tell you to like?

Will be seeing myself tomorrow. Saw Wall-E today and it was fantastic. But Hancock looks great.

And I won't be bothered if it goes from comedy to serious halfway through. As long as it's entertaining, that won't bother me.

By the way people, critics have never liked Will Smith.

The FIRST (and awesome) Bad Boys has a 40-something%. Even his unarguably good movies (Hitch, Happyness, Ali) are in the 60's.

the first half is an A.

the second half is a C+. will smith is totally awesome, but halfway through the story takes a strange turn that i disagreed with. a 32% rottenwatch for this is brutal and completely misleading. this was so much better than wanted (which i saw yesterday) that it's ridiculous.

Im surprised this movie is only 90 minutes...seemed like something that would be 2 hours

Wonder how much stuff was cut to get PG-13 from an R rating...

That's what I thought when I saw this and found it really funny for some reason. :lol I think it helps if you read it with their voices in mind:

On a side note, I need something besides MSPaint. I need to get better with GIMP.

So basically if Hancock was from a comic book he'd be called
Candy
Man?

I just came back from it. A little cheesy, very light on the plot, but still a good time. The final action scene was pretty well done, I thought. Sappy ending total, but hey, it's a family movie. I wish they fleshed out the story a bit, as the movie's pretty short at 90-some minutes.

On a side note, Charlize Theron was totally unexpected. I had no idea she was in this!

*sings* Mr. F...

Arrested Development, go! j/k

Hancock was overall an enjoyable ride for a 90-minute summer flick.

The first half had its funny bits with Hancock being a burnt and bummed-out asshole-ish anti-hero. The second half, however, changes in tone once the "twist" is introduced. The camera-work also suffered from some jitteryness which was unneeded.

I couldn't help but think that a lot of scenes were cut out to keep the pace up, though. Perhaps the DVD release will see an Uncut or Extended version to fill in more of the backstory.

Hella funny parts with the
Vietnamese thugs
and the fat jab at
McDonald's
. :lol

Well I saw WALL-E and Hancock last night. I enjoyed both movies and cant say I put one above the other but hey thats just me. Surprisingly my gf enjoyed Hancock more. That goes to say that with WALL-E I expected something more and kinda knew the premise of the movie. With Hancock and went in not knowing anything. So I would say both movies are enjoyable.

This, sad so many people cannot think for themselves. I'll see Hancok and Wall-E and not even care what critics think.

I saw them both yesterday too (*Wall-E for the second time) the choice is easy Wall-E by light years is the better movie

yes. but how this is pertinent is beyond me. i'm still confused why manabyte insisted on coming in here to pimp wall-e, besides the fact that it's a disney movie.

Can you please explain in general terms what happens that changes the movie from an A to a C+? A lot of reviews are saying the same thing and without actually seeing it I would like to know why.

I enjoyed it. The best parts were all before
the wife turned out to be a superhuman as well
--that particular device made the latter half of the movie a little hokey and less enjoyable than the first half, but it's still one of the better films I've seen this summer.

As far as superhero movies are concerned, you could do a lot worse.

sure, i can try. i would say in the most general of terms that the movie has a distinct focus in the first half on what the trailer presents as the primary conflict: how can we take this boozy guy with powers and turn him into a superhero? and it works. it just completely, utterly works. this movie will make you love will smith, if you're not a fan already--it made me want to run out and see every will smith movie ever made. jason bateman is also charming as hell.

at about the halfway point (roughly, i guess), it just splits the focus of the movie in two, shifting it away from "can hancock be a hero to the public?" to a very unexpected turn in the plot. i won't say any more about it, beyond the fact that it surprised me, and it's not the way i would have taken the film. it doesn't ruin it--there are still plenty of fun moments to be had--but it makes it a weaker, not stronger, movie.

About trailers spoiling too much, I totally agree. I loved Iron Man but I felt a bit cheated that I'd seen all the best lines in the trailers. Is this becoming a bigger problem because I don't remember it ever being this bad?

WANTED was the shit!!!! wow..

thanks for the heads up.. hancock next tuesday..

Saw it last night... and it was the definition of mediocre. I like Will Smith and I love Bateman, but even those two couldnt save this mess. The acting between these two is the only good part of this movie, since it adds much needed humor. I had a lot of issues with the film, and heres my negatives list:

CGI: Absolutely craptacular... Looks like it belonged on a TV show. I honestly think Heroes has better special effects.

The Villain: I'm not lying, this movie had the cheesiest (the costume looked so stupid), dumbest, weakest, most retarded villain ever.
they even gave him a hook hand GOD was it bad

The Score: Shitty, shitty, shitty. Wow, I've never seen a more pretentious score. It blares during minimal action scenes and the movie would have been better if they had just left a lot of scenes without music.

Charlize Theron: She's sooo hot, and she ruins the twist. The second she sees Hancock, she puts up like a HRM OMG I KNOWS SUMTHING look that gives the twist away.

Lastly, the film had tonal and mythological problems. Tonal problems because its not sure if it wants to be a character drama, a straight comedy, or a traditional superhero. And mythological problems because you're never really sure how the "rules" of these superheroes works. You'll see, there are scenes that happen and you just go... "oh, so that just automatically happens cuz theyre superheroes?" huh

Overall: Iron Man>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hulk>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hancock

Saw it last night. What a freaking mess. They could have done so much with this. I half expected to see Bill Cosby or Robert Townsend pop up. But damn Charlize Theron is hot. Worst Will Smith movie in a long time.

Basically every movie Will Smith has ever made has been completely forgettable. I expect nothing less from this movie.
