Hands on with PC Tekken 7 from E3

One of my favorite previews are from the EZA crew who are even more casual than Max. Really goes to dispel the myth on how you need to have high level execution to get some enjoyment out of Tekken.

3D fighters in general are good for that, you can mash out a lot of cool stuff due to the nature of their inputs.

"Wasn't TTT2's criticized on how it was too complex or whatever for casual play?"

Not executionally (for combos, at least, movement is a whole other subject). Tekken's biggest problem is simply *how much* information players needed to know. Or at least, in TTT2. There's far fewer characters in T7, so that barrier is lessened.

The complexity issue will never go away. More characters will come to the home release, and they all will continue to have 100-200 moves each.

With that said, T7 will definitely be easier for intermediate players to do well vs. advance players (and they will fare better vs. some experts). I played the game at E3 and the limited arcade release last summer.

Namco made a lot of changes to help players do better agInst tougher competition. Okizeme is weaker, evasive movement was nerfed (but improved slightly in FR), comback ultras and "Rage Drives" are in for easer damage, custom string breakers in the form of Power Crushes were added, wall damage is noticeably less, and more.

We don't know if it will be enough for success, but it looks, sounds and plays great. I hope it does very well.

Guy with little Tekken experience does an 8-minute video of how good the game looks.

We get it.

How about actual gameplay feedback?

All the new characters have far fewer moves than the older characters, and execution wise the game is far more forgiving not just to help attract new players but because the game is meant to be played on netcode from start. Even if the game is played local, it's built to be on a LAN and not offline like older games.

I'm going to roll my eyes and laugh when console players start complaining and whining by calling this "input lag" come next year.

Well there are hunrderds of videos online of the arcade ver. you could watch for that @_@

Tekken 7 has been out officially since March 2015, and as far back with its fall location test of late 2014. If you wanted gameplay feedback you could watch the countless number of videos of match vids or read discussions from players.

Even Fated Retribution, the version console is based on went into location test this past spring and will launch on July 5.

I've been dying to get a Tekken game on the PC, so I'm glad that there seems to be a positive impression around this port.

Also, Tekken 7's dynamic battle story mode intro thing looks unbelievable! I can't wait and I hope crossplay gets announced.

Just going from the character select screen, it looks like my boy Lei Wulong is gone. :( if that's true, my Tekken days are over. He's been my go-to guy since Tekken 3.

That's not going to be the final roster. There will be more character announcements between now and launch, and maybe even more added through post launch support.

I wasn't going to buy it, seeing as how I don't think there's much innovation in the sequels these days. I haven't been impressed with this series since T5, and I've played them since T2.

But I'll definitely be going for it on PC, just to test the waters. Hopefully a beta.

I didn't even realize it was confirmed for PC

It was kinda a stealth confimation. It wasn't announced on the Microsoft conference because it's Steam, not Win10 Store. The trailer Namco uploaded on Youtube had the Steam logo among its platforms at the end screen.

There wasn't a specific thread, but PC was in the title at least, if you were curious.

I'm so looking forward to Tekken 7, its been far too long since 6 came out and that was a pretty disappointing port, with its long load times.

Great to see this coming to PC too, although I will be getting this on PS4, so I can play it on my 55" TV and because Tekken is a game I've always associated with PlayStation, since it was one of the 1st games I got on PS1 and a lot of the early games are PlayStation exclusives.

Hopefully all the ports won't suffer from the problems Tekken 6 did.

Tag 2 was fine so I think they've learned their lesson. Still, it's a new engine so we'll just have to wait and see.

Totally forgot about Tag 2, I didn't play it much at the time of release but I still have it, so might have to pick it back up again get some practice in ready for 7.

I was referring to returning classic characters as opposed to the addition of even more new characters, but good point.

BTW, I didn't mention this above, but do you feel the nerf to throws helps or hurts average skilled players when facing better opponents? For those thaat don't know, in T7 you can break generic throws with either punch button instead of watching the arms of the character you are fighting for a specific break input.

I think the change is tougher for casuals because they throw more than advanced players and can benefit from someone decent who is also not skilled at escaping. Either way, the change is another way Namco is trying to assist players with the Tekken system.

Game looks pretty cool, I've only ever played a couple Tekken matches in the arcade, but I'm interested in this one. Is Tekken Tag Tournament 2 getting a PC release as well?

Wasn't there something about Namco considering Steam Workshop support for the PC version? There are going to be unofficial mods regardless (especially since it's a UE4 game) but having official mod support would be something else. That could open up some really interesting avenues that haven't really been touched by any fighting game yet, even if the official support was limited to customization items and the like.

Tekken on a keyboard. Finally!
I don't know if this comment was in jest or not, but seeing how well some people play Tekken on Hitbox controllers (which are basically arcade sticks but with the joystick replaced with buttons for directional inputs), I could see some people having some absurdly clean movement on a keyboard.

MMCaffee also made a Tekken-on-keyboard demonstration some months ago. They probably used a keyboard adapter for consoles.

It's also listed on Steam already.

Been playing a lot of Tag 2 since it became free for E3 week BBC and there's actually players online now.

I'll be there day 1 for Tekken 7.

Have to start murdering newcomers with Kazuya tha gawd.

Tekken is a game everybody can pick up and play and have a fun time especially against other casuals.

If we have guests who've never touched games/fighting games I always start Tekken Tag 2, tell them which character's are easy to pick up and play and tell them to repeatedly press X and Y or A and B to do combos and it works great.

Tekken Tag 2 is no different and the tag feature is perfect to do 2 vs 2 teams where the first players are the beginners.

Games like Street Fighter, Mario Kart or even Smash Bros. are way to complicated for most people.

The perfect party game in my opinion.
