Hard Rock in the mainstream has returned...

Men_in_Boxes

Snake Oil Salesman
Jimmy Hendrix, Zeppelin, ACDC, Guns n Rose's, Nirvana, System of a Down...(NOTHING)...

Hard rock music has been a staple in pop music starting in the late 60's to mid 00's. It's been absent ever since. They've been playing this band (Turnstile) on my local FM station non stop the past few weeks and it feels like the drought has ended...

I mean, in the mainstream? A local FM station is too little to judge that by. Doing a quick Google search (as the band name didn’t ring a bell) their newest album debuted at #30 which is respectable, sure, but the actual whole genre making a comeback (at least in the mainstream, as far as I know indie rock remains popular in the indie scene)? Not seeing any evidence of that.

Hell, I’ll sometimes check Spotify’s top 100 in the US and I’m struggling to recall if I ever saw a single rock song there. Even fucking country music will usually manage to nab a few spots, but finding a rock song there is like trying to find a cactus in Antarctica.

Rock music has become slightly more fashionable than the last few years thanks to popular groups like Greta Van Fleet, but it's still a far cry to even the early-mid 00s when new big rock acts were popping up all over the place (with varying amounts of staying power).

I haven't listened to what you linked yet, but it seems the majority of big rock acts these days are known for having a sound that is very evocative of older acts like GVF or Dirty Honey (to the point where they are highly criticized for the same reason), or bands that achieved their popularity long ago and are just continuing to release successful albums like The Strokes and The Killers.

Truly unique, new rock artists seem to still be a niche. I would love for the tide to change but it seems like we are still at the peak of Pop Rap being the main fascination of the public (at least here in America).

I would absolutely love for rock music to become more mainstream again. Hearing nothing but pop or rap really starts to wear on me--it's also sad kids don't seem to have an interest in playing instruments anymore, either.

For the other drummers out there, the first track sounded like the dude used a stock kit that came on a TD-50. Even the panning on the toms sounds just like one of the stock kits. :pie_roffles:

I remember reading somewhere that the new stuff does not sell very well and the big companies are trying to sell the old stuff

I think in general the 80's/90's/00's sounds are coming back. There's even a 90's section in clothing stores... I guess I'm officially old.

I remember reading Greta Van Fleet comments on YouTube a few years ago. Lots of positive comments from the older generation who grew up on that sound, and a lot of them like myself were surprised they were young.

top 50 global and top 50 usa. not a single "rock" song. it's mostly latin pop, rap, hiphop, dance, etc. Playing guitar isn't a cool mainstream thing anymore unless you're some good looking emo boy like MGK.

that being said I still find a great deal of hard rock/metal/posthardcore/punk/etc music nowadays, you just have dig a little deeper and look at more underground lables/artists/bands. rock is still alive and well, but it's not 2009 anymore, no non-rock focused station is interested in playing bands like Breaking Benjamin anymore
