I liked Death Magnetic (TONS of cool riffs) but it was more of a "Yay! Metallica can still kind of play thrash songs!" novelty thing. 1000 bands do it better. Spit Out the Bone, however, is up there with the 80s stuff. It's a REALLY good thrash song, no novelty involved.
Some Death Magnetic songs are incredible though. That Was Just Your Life and All Nightmare Long come to mind. I wish we could hear those songs with Hardwired-level production.

Yeah DM had some great songs which is why I won't say this is better. Just different.

Now that we're dead gives me a real Misfits vibe. The solo in here comes revenge is pretty sweet too. One of the standout ones considering Kirk's performance on the album.

Oh yeah, it can't be stressed enough how good Hetfield sounds on this album... It's unreal he's still able to pull this off, after all these years. One of the most impressive parts of the record for me.

Yeah Hetfield's voice and the song diversity are the standouts for this album.

Can't wait for Friday. The hype is getting serious for me. Been listening to a mix of tracks that "sound" like the new tracks they've released to prime the pump, as it were.

Okay, so someone sent me a link to hear a new song, but it's on a site called Zippyshare. I only use spotify these days or purchase physical media and I'm terrified of torrenting. If I decide to give this song a listen from there am I going to lose my house in court? If so, I think I'll wait.

I know the hard times thing is a joke, but still....yeah I'll just wait if that site isn't safe. Have it preordered already anyway.

I doubt anything would happen, really. Bands don't really earn their living from CD sales these days anyway, they do from touring and merch sales. Reportedly, the reason for Metallica constantly touring the last few years, especially in Europe, was due to the hefty cost of running the machinery around the band + the losses incurred from the Through the Never movie and that festival they set up.

Yeah I agree. That Was Just Your Life in particular is a ripper. I was thinking stuff like My Apocalypse. Its a good song by old dudes who used to play thrash standards. Spit Out the Bone is just downright awesome.

Listening to some Death Magnetic songs for the first time in several years....

I think overall DM is a catchier album. I think it has more like....."annoying" parts than the new album, but they stay in your head in that sense. I think a lot of the new one is forgettable. Overall I think DM ends up having more consistently good riffs, riffs that feel new rather than deliberately trying to evoke older songs. It sounds like the Metallica that drifted away from metal, got comfortable in that space, then found their way back naturally. It still has a lot of that sound and songwriting choices but it's framed in a way more in line with the classic material

There's a lot to like about the new one. The production helps immensely, James sounds the best he has in 25 years at times. I think a lot of it seems forced, compared to Metallica's output always seeming effortless. The rest of Spit Out The Bone makes me like the earlier sections more but I'm still like "man, in your prime you wouldn't think twice about this lame Lamb Of God melodic riff"

I also still love the artwork too, compared to the garbage fire that is Hardwired's

I agree that DM's riffs are catchier. This album is more melodic with lead lines and the vocals, but there's more going on in the DM riffs. Many of the ones on this album are simpler and have less variation, less memorable in isolation.

The production on DM really sounds bad going back and forth.

I disagree. I listened to DM a lot over the past 3 weeks. I can barely remember any of the riffs. But I feel that they stand out and are overall better on HTSD, but I feel the main issue with HTSD is that it's too straightforward whereas DM is the exact opposite.

This is the best production a Metallica album has had in at least 20 years.

This is the best vocals they've had in at least 20 years.

This is the best song writing they've had in at least 20 years.

It really feels like they wanted to make this album. You can feel the passion in it.

Shame that people are already hating it cuz it's not thrash.

Obviously different things are going to stick with different people but I just can't see it with HTSD. Much of it just sounds in line with their 90's material (including Garage Inc) besides the ridiculously forced AJFA melodic harmonies. Regardless of how much you want to listen to it I think Death Magnetic has its own sound that stands on its own with the other material. HTSD leans heavily on the past without really providing much of its own, and when you're trying to evoke the older stuff it makes it more apparent when the material isn't as good

I don't think it does any of the "hard rock" stuff as well as Load/Reload and it obviously doesn't touch Justice.

Death Magnetic is not something I've actively listened to since like....2009 probably but I can't even see myself listening to half of these tracks next week

People want 20 year old Metallica.

50 year old men aren't going to sound like they did when they were 20.

I don't even know if its a nostalgia factor or those younger who want to try to witness what they never got to. I get everyone has opinions, and if you don't like it you don't like it, but a lot of the hate is extremely subjective.

I feel like a lot of the hate Metallica gets is knee jerk reactions from people who don't even listen anymore because they aren't what they used to be.

I really like DM, my comment wasn't a knock against it or anything and I've refrained from calling HTSD better than DM. They're just different beasts.

DM is more thrashy, HTSD is more groove. It's not hard rock like load/reload it's just metal through and through. It doesn't sound like Load/Reload at all, it's incorporates the same kind of grooves. I'd say Garage Inc is a more apt comparison but it doesn't sound like anything they've done before.

Every Metallica album stands on its own with its own material and no two (Load/reload excluded because they're technically one album) sound alike and HTSD is no different.

I understand that it's not for everyone and I can understand why people don't like it, but don't knock it's merits because of that.

If it sounds like I'm bashing I apologize, that's not my intent. I'm also not hating because it isn't thrash, as I've said my favorite song is Am I Savage (which I think is also better than anything on DM). I just want to hear them write something good, no use in crying about a change in direction 20+ years ago.

Halo Of Fire is also very, very good

Someone just put the whole album up on youtube, which was promptly removed, but I got to hear Spit Out The Bone!

I'm shaking from how damn good that was. The energy and intensity in the playing and James' delivery....something I haven't heard in years. This song ranks up there with the best of their album closers. Can't wait for my 3CD Deluxe Edition to get here Friday!

Ok third listen of the second disc done. So thoroughly mediocre aside from Spit Out The Bone :(

I love Spit, Atlas, Moth, Dream no More and Hardwired, but that's where it stops for me.

James sounds great on this, but holy hell does his effort get buried under some of the most uncreative riffs and drumming I've heard this year. Halo of Fire is my favorite so far. Kirk actually makes an effort in that.
Album sounds best when they copy themselves.

Disc 2 (sans the closer) really sounds like one big excuse to make this a double album. Why won't it eeeeend

Still early days, but so far what would everyone rank each album? Here's mine for shit and giggles:

MoP
Justice
RTL
Black
Load
HTSD
KEA
DM
Re-Load
St. Anger
Lulu

The top 2 are liable to change depending on what mood I'm in.

The new album's great overall, but not quite as great as the 80's stuff bar KEA for me. And even then it's close.

Too early for HTSD, I think. I guess it would be around Load/DM.
Also, not sure if KEA would be before or after ReLoad

This is tough so early, but here's my ranking:

Master of Puppets
...AJFA
Metallica
Ride the Lightning
HWTSD
Load
KEA
Death Magnetic
Reload
St. Anger

Master of Puppets
...And Justice for All
Ride the Lightning
The Black Album
Death Magnetic
Load = Reload (I can't pick, I actually love both)
Kill 'Em All
St. Anger

Not exactly sure where to put Hardwired yet, too early.

1. Master of Puppets
2. And Justice for All
3. Ride the Lightning
4. The Black Album
5. Hardwired... to Self-Destruct
6. Kill 'Em All
7. Load/Reload
8. Death Magnetic
9. St. Anger

Middle of the road album. Death Magnetic had better riffs. HTSD seems like it has more variety in the music and better songwriting. DM for me was a lot of random riff machine mix and match. Still love it though. I actually like St. Anger but could have used some editing to shorten songs and a better drum sound.

Actually my problem with Hardwired is the LACK of variety. When you get to Disc 2 the songs start to all feel samey. The majority of the album are heavy mid-tempo songs. Ideally I would have taken out ManUNkind, Savage or Murder and added a ballad.

Some thoughts after listening to the whole album twice just now:

ManUNkind is undeserving of it's intro.

Halo on Fire is my favourite track so far. Love the chrous. I was switching between that and Bone for ages but Halo edges out for me.

Confusion is like Cynaide for me, hated it at first, warmed to it and now I'd consider it being one of my favourite tracks of the album.

So glad Rob's bass is as audible as it is. He sounds great with these groovier riffs.

I'm really disappointed that there's no instrumental. Metallica's instrumentals are amongst my favourite out of any band I listen to.

My Ranking (Based on Play Count in iTunes):

Load
Death Magnetic
Master of Puppets
Ride the Lightning
Reload
And Justice for All
Metallica
Kill 'Em All
St. Anger

As of today, I'd stick Hardwired... To Self Destruct between Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning.
