It's a great album, I'd put it on par, maybe a little above LOAD. Better than Reload. Glad they went that way instead of another pony thrasher wannabe like DM.

I bought the 24/96 download. It sounds ok, quite hot but it's not really the kind of album that's going to shine in high resolution. Or so I thought. I just received an email stating that audiophiles have been complaining about the dynamic range so they are offering a fresh transfer at 24/44 that has a higher dynamic range.

I'll report back once I've done a comparison.

I've bought all the entire catalogue (sans St. Anger) at 24/96 from Metallica.com. Mileage may vary but some of the albums sound incredible (Black album) whilst others just sound slightly better than the original CD (Garage Inc, S & M). The first four albums sound as good as I can ever imagine them sounding without a remix. Kill & Lightning have gotten the deluxe remaster treatment so I'll be interested to see what difference that process makes to the others as they drip feed them to us over the next 5 years or so.

Edit. The 24/44 download is better. Slightly more dynamic and relaxed sounding. It looks like they have permanently switched the files on their server too, so that's what you'll get if you buy from now on.

All in all my favourite album since Reload!

Read that on their forum, seems like they gave the mastering to two separate companies, funnily enough the Flac hd files came in with worse DR then the "mixed for iTunes" mp3's.

Its like Metallica is doing it on purpose, refusing to put out good sounding records. Verdict is, LP is mixed/mastered the best but its not possible to get that mix/master in digital form - LOL

I just bought the FLAC-HD myself after Dan from their board said they switched out the file. I did think it was odd my iTunes files sounded better than the CD.

Oy, I've bought this album 3x

Also high res is still brick walled, but the volume was limited so it doesn't sound as harsh

Outlaw Torn though. OUTLAW TORN

Also, one of my favorites. Though, for Outlaw, Hero of the Day, and Bleeding Me, I actually prefer the S&M versions. The symphony adds something special to those more simple, mid-tempo songs. All three of them have some great Jason vocals, as well. The 'See me' back and forth with James on Outlaw, doubling James during the 'I am the beast' part of Bleeding Me, and the ending of Hero. All just fucking awesome.

If I could have made one change to the Loads, it would have been to have Jason record backing vocals instead of James just doing them all. I hate to even dream of it, 'cause it would have been so good.

The lyrics to Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are so good. Really good songwriting. Plus the solos!

Yep. I get some old fans flipping shit over the changes the Loads brought. But, I love the more personal lyrics. I mean, if Bleeding Me was as autobiographical as it seems, it's pretty sad, really. It shows James had been trying to fight his demons for far longer than the world knew with Some Kind of Monster. Not that there weren't more personal lyrics on their earlier works, but the Loads feel like they excel in it, not just dabble. I'm guessing those two songs mean something to James as well since they were never singles, but still find their way into setlists fairly regularly.

No leaf clover, man.

edit: Oh and 'Wasting my Hate" is so badass...the riff...mother of god. I have no idea why anyone dislikes LOAD or RELOAD.

Both are really good albums. I chalk it up to the bandwagon Metallica haters and Metallica fans that can't get past '80s Metallica. Bands change and I feel Metallica is better for it.

Yeah the S&M version is amazing. All Load and Reload songs, especially Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Memory Remains (best live song ever probably) deserved to be played more often live.
Fuel is the only one...It's a great song, no doubt...but there is so much more amazing stuff on Load an Reload.

That set was I great but I was hoping for Spit out the Bone somewhere.

I was looking at the official Metallica site and I love how they have a setlist and even photos of older gigs, going years back. They love performing live and I like how the site reflects that. I haven't seen another band with this kind of archive.

As someone who has been listening to them for 30 years of my life, I am really digging the new album. Listened to it twice today and it keeps growing and growing on me.
It is not their best album. It is for sure not their worst.
But I needed an album like this right about now.
It is Metallica. And Metallica is just what the doctor ordered at this moment in time.
For me it really is simple as that.

Digging this album and feel like this was the best possible record they could reasonably make right now. Good stuff.

Agreed! I've only gotten through the whole album once so far, but overall I found it very solid. Looking forward to digging further into it.

What is the best new song?

I think you'll find every song being mentioned by different people at least once. Some who genuinely feel that song is the best, and some just trying to be different and stand out from the crowd. But once the dust settles, I think it will be pretty clear that Spit out the Bone is the best song for the majority of people.

I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't love that song. Like it's not bad but it's not mindblowing either. Honestly I like Lords 2016 more.

And that's totally fine. There will never be anything that's universally loved by everyone. I mean, there are people that don't really like Fade to Black as well.

I fucking love the parts with vocals, but it could have used some more trimming of some of the instrumental sections to achieve perfection for me. As is, it's still near the top for me, but I'm not sure it's number one. Gonna have to give the album a few more listens to really decide.

Yeah, it's too long for it to have as much impact as it could imo.

lol how did this happen, I started out hating Now that We're Dead, now it's one of my favorites of the album. When I want to listen to a random track, I always pick that one now.

Now that the four of us are back at home, getting settled and decompressing after one of the craziest, wildest and greatest weeks of our career, word has gotten to us over the weekend that Hardwired...To Self-Destruct is number one in a staggering 57 countries, Top 3 in 75 countries and Top 5 in 105 countries! We’re not quite sure we can even name 105 countries!

Wow... what an insane awesome ride it’s been. We are stunned, beyond grateful and truly appreciative that not only have Metallica fans embraced Hardwired…To Self-Destruct beyond our wildest expectations, but more importantly, we’re proud to see that hard rock and metal is still viable and matters in 2016…TO SO MANY PEOPLE! The support, excitement, and love from all corners of the planet means so much to us and we are sincerely blown away by the response.

The story has just begun and there is so much more to come, but we want to thank you for making this such a special time in Metallica history. We look forward to seeing you out on the road as we’re just getting started here. Please keep your posts, photos, comments, critiques and stories coming our way!!

Thank you Metallica for this amazing release.

That's a fun show. But everything from the new album just fucking pales compared to the older stuff.

I like the first CD of Hardwired good enough by now, but the second one is still just a snoozefest to me (except for Spit Out the Bone). I'm especially disappointed with Kirk on this album, I mean lost iphone shmiphone, but the solo parts sound so heartless and phoned in.
And Lars' drumming is just offensively dull, but yeah, news at 11.

So, I was thinking about this earlier today... If you took 8 tracks from DM and HSD, I bet you can make an album that would rival any of their output from the 80's.

For fun, let's give it a try:

1) That Was Just Your Life
2) Hardwired
3) Broken, Beat and Scarred
4) Moth Into Flame
5) Unforgiven III (Maybe... Maybe)
6) Halo on Fire
7) Suicide and Redemption
8) Spit Out the Bone

What say you? Oh, and usually it takes me a little while to warm up to a whole album... Right now, I'm listening to Spit Out the Bone on repeat because it's fucking brilliant. Love Moth Into Flame too. I've given the whole album a listen and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. Needs some time to grow on me, as they all did.

Atlus, Rise! and Halo on Fire are the two best songs by a mile, I'd even put Atlus up there with old school Metallica songs as the best they've done. Album is overall a mixed bag for me, and I felt trimming it to just one side would have made it a much better album, but it was better than I expected for sure.

You forgot All Nightmare Long, which is easily the best song on DM. Unforgiven III needs to be dropped in favor of it. Overall, it would be a better record, but in my opinion it wouldn't touch their early output. Their riffs tend to drag nowadays and the transitions between them can be quite unimaginative (often it's just a repeated empty E or simple E5 chord).

Spit Out the Bone is a fucking awesome song. Easily their best "proggy" style-song since the And Justice for All Days.

You can tell on that one song they really went all-in on different ideas and creativity.

It's very well-written and sounds amazing with the high-quality recording and mastering on this album. Shit, even LARS sounds on-point. His best drumming in decades IMO.

I didnt like ''disk 2" as much as the opening songs, except for Spit but after 5 or 6 listens,I really like Confusion now for example, nothing like the last 2 minutes of Halo on fire yet though...Revenge is also growing on me a lot...good album.

1. That was just your life
2. Atlas, rise
3. The Day that never comes
4. All nightmare long
5. Moth into flame
6. My apocalypse
7. Halo on fire
8. Spit out the bone

This would be my personal choices. I'd love to see people put together their 8 track (yes, make some tough decisions) load/reload. Loaded? The load? Deload?

I definitely had this thought while listening to the album. They overdid the use of the staccato E5. Even tho it's been a staple, I still felt they used it instead of a better option here.

1st half of the album is quite strong, but then comes a significant drop in quality starting with Confusion. Spit Out the Bone ends the album on a good note though.
