edit: And does anyone else think St.Anger is fucking amazing? That garbage can snare..lmao...I love it. also, songs like Shoot me again, Sweet amber, The Unnamed Feeling, etc....Fuck it. This album is amazing. They just went crazy and said "Fuck you all". I love it.

Wouldn't call it "amazing", but yeah: I absolutely like it.

Similar to how I think Dark Souls 2 is not just my favourite, but perhaps also the best Souls game, I adore St Anger and the way it sounds. I revel in its silliness, as well.

I actually really enjoy St. Anger, minus Invisible Kid. That song does zilch for me. But Sweet Amber, All Within My Hands, the title track, etc., are all great listens.

I think the material on St.Anger is good but it sounds like they stuck the band in a tin industrial trash can, rolled them down a large and rocky hill then pressed record. Much prefer the fan rendition.

Ill throw my name in the hat of St Anger fans. If anything, the riffs alone made that album for me.

But it very much felt like a modern day Kill Em All for the band imo. Some bandmates trying to find not only that spark musically, but also with each other again. It was rough, far from perfect, but it was a proper step towards regaining that "edge" they lost.

Death Magnetic would then be a refinement of sorts, piecing together the bits that werent there in St Anger and generally being more comfortable with themselves and their music again.

Which brings me to Hardwired...to Self Destruct. Some very promising material already out in the world, and sounds like plenty more killer stuff on the way. Potentially another Master of Puppets with this renewed Metallica? Possibly, but only time will tell.

Now I hope nobody takes what I said as a "these albums are better/as good" or "just as influential", but instead as my opinion on how their career seems to be reflecting a similar...pace? Growing improvement? Not sure of the best way to describe what Im trying to say.

Imo, that's the best thing lol. It sounds like rubbish...let's be honest..it's sounds like shit. But that's the intention. They mixed the awful sound with melodic parts (known from Load/Reload) combined with thrash metal riffs. The only thing I miss is solos...really. I'm still amazed by the fact that a band like Metallica releases an album like St.Anger. It proves that they don't give a fuck about criticism or charts. They're just doing what they want to do...
They listen to fan feedback but they're not writing songs to please the fans.

St. Anger is a rough listen, but it kind of had to be for them to get all their shit out. I'll forever say Some Kind of Monster and The Unnamed Feeling are up among their best.

I listened to Atlas, Rise some more. Certain parts really remind me of Blackened, and others are a mix of KeA and Lightning. I love it.

I'm liking it.

What is James holding? That looks familiar...

What a weird song

Everything they've released so far has had a pretty clear influence from AJFA but this very specifically sounds like Load era trying to write a Justice song.....and I don't love it

I don't hate it or anything but it sounds like they sat down and said "ok I'm gonna write something like Justice I guess" but the choices made in the song reflect their more "rockin'" direction of the late 90s

St. Anger is their best album since Justice. People blame the production but Death Magnetic and this new album sound worse. I just love the big dumb riffs.

There is no possible way that anything in this statement is true.
I like the St.Anger material, but I'll only listen to the fan mix. And after not liking reload and relistening to it right now, Reload is a god damn incredible album and Death Magnetic is great too, but I have a feeling Hardwired to self destruct will be god damn incredible too if what those fans were saying is true.

I don't agree with anything you said, but I still love that you said it. Because it's always nice to have more and more people saying positive things about St. Anger.

I just have a weird soft spot for it. Death Magnetic and the new album so far sound so empty and tinny and everything is mixed too loudly. It's mixed like a pop record. St. Anger had Lars' "homeless man hitting his head on a mailbox" snare but everything else was nice and crunchy. Plus those downtuned riffs are better than the 80s reject stuff they use now. Death Magnetic would have made a great EP but it has so much filler.

Christ that ESP was passed by the lawyers just enough to stop another Gibson lawsuit wasn't it.

Bet he recorded the whole thing on his original (Fake) Gibson flying V and the So What ESP Explorer.

I know he used his EET FUK on Moth.

Ah cool cool. I assume the shot of him playing the new fuggly ESP was a promo. He seems to be very set in his ways on what he uses when it comes to tracking the record.

Dont know why he insists on using that when he got that beautiful Ken Lawrence.

It's nothing about the beauty of them more about what he prefers sound and feel wise. It's why EET FUK, SO WHAT and the his OG V never go on tour anymore.

I'm liking how the solo goes directly into that badass slow riff.

And I'd definitely agree with someone saying this sounds like AJFA mixed with Load. Really diggin' the sound tbh.

Another good song but I still like Moth better, and also Hardwire...to me its a nice quick fast short song with punch,I love the drum on it...yeah the chorus is a little lame but overall great song,I figure since its going to be a double album, there will be enough long songs so Hardwire is perfect...for me:

Moth.
Hardwire.
Atlas.

Never heard of this, can you explain?

ESP EX history

Basically ESP made a line of guitars in the 80s with the same shape as the Gibson Explorer. It was very popular and Hetfield had a bunch of them(such as the EET FUK model). Gibson sued ESP and ever since ESP has changed the shape to avoid further lawsuits.

They now have the ESP EX series and the SnakeByte which is one of Hetfields signature guitars. Both look similar to the Gibson Explorer but are different.

Ah got it, thanks for the info! I was thinking Gibson sued Metallica.

The riff after the second chorus is fucking amazing.
This song could be on Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. Atlas, Rise! is damn good. If they wrote this in the 80's it would be a classic.

Now That We're Dead:Killer riffs, subdued pace, tribal galloping drums, has groove Iommi styled guitars, harmonious, Dio-esque melody in the bridge, lush instrumental "legit" drums, has a simple structure, could be a new fan favorite(Emphasized in multiple reviews). More "traditional" metal, likened to "Enter Sandman" and "Black Album" but with more force and thrash, speeds up near the end. Catchy but not too pop-ish. Lyric snippet: "Now that we're dead, my dear we can be together"

Dream No More: Unexpected vocals from James, gloomy, slow groove intro, he harmonizes on the track, fat mid-tempo song, likened to "Sad But True", lyrics include "You turn to stone!", mid-tempo song, its a "tough monster" lyrics are Cthulu influenced. Brutally heavy with some lines sounding disoriented. Lyric snippet: "Cthulu awaken!, Wake, dreaming no more" (Hetfield sounds like a monster here) "You turn to stone, cannot look away!" "You turn to stone- madness, they say Cthulu awaken"

Halo On Fire: A "One" like ballad, epic, emotionally charged. opens with clear (assuming this means clean) vocals, no gruffness. The speed picks up in the latter half of the track as it also gets heavier, thick grooves, pounding drums and guitars. Has more intricate sections, twists and turns than any other song on the album. The opening riff is melodic and soft. Incredibly simple chorus, very powerful and catchy. Lyrical snippet "Hello darkness, say goodbye" "Oh, halo on fire, the midnight knows it well"

Confusion: Bombastic riffs, fast and confusing, marching drums, likened to "Disposable Heroes" and "Death Magnetic", the lyrics also deal with war, post traumatic stress disorder. The song is a grower. Older "vintage"styled riffs, also likened to "Am I Evil". Kirk's solo's are similar to his work on "...And Justice for All". Lyrical snippet: "Leave the battlefield/coming home from war", "Confusion, all sanity is now beyond me. My life, the war that never ends" "Coming home, pieces do not fit anymore. Make it go away, please make it go away."

ManUnKind: Rob Trujillo has writing credits on this track. Riff compared to Iron Maiden with a bassline intro that's similar to "Load/Reload" in a good way (Their words). "Challenge for air drummers" (also their words) the song is in an odd time signature.Compared to "Black Album" and "...And Justice for All",many starts and stops. more progressive but also compared to "Load/Reload" with a hard-rock groove(Load/Reload influence is mentioned in most articles), "The God That Failed" along with "My friend Misery" is also mentioned. There are clean guitars, a lot going on in this song.Heavy and "chunky", jazz like, staccato riffs, solo rhythmically trickled, likened to "Rage Against the Machine", a very special song. About mankind's cruel nature being measured Lyrical snippet: "I've become hostage to my mind, I've left myself behind, faith in manUNkind!"

Here Comes Revenge:Riff reminiscent of "Harvester of Sorrow" but with a new style, an anthem, mid tempo, changing dynamics, pre chorus also reminiscent of "Leper Messiah". Very biblical, "Cain and Abel, Eye for an Eye, Forgiveness and Revenge" are lyrical themes, likened to "Black Album" and "AJFA", the speed picks up at some point in the song and is reminiscent of early Metallica, James' vocal style is aggressive, also has a great solo!. Lyrical snippet: "You ask for forgiveness/I always ask for revenge" "He was Abel, I was Cain" "Here comes revenge, just for you. Revenge you can not undo"

Am I Savage: really heavy track, clean and slow intro, thick groove blues influenced, likened to Black Sabbath in one article, also considered to be "Metallica at their most melodic" from another article, no dramatic twists and "uncomplicated", Lyrical snippet: "Am I savage? Scratching at the door. I don't recognize you anymore"

Murder One: Tribute to Lemmy, has Motorhead titles for its lyrics, mid tempo song, could've been done by Motorhead and Metallica (I guess this means it sounds like a collaboration musically). Lots of riffs, mid tempo song. Lyrical snippet: "The man in black, Born to lose" "Aces wild, aces high, all the aces till you die", "murder all, murder one, gimme murder, second class to none" "Till the end, finished living to win"

Spit Out the Bone: Machine gun drums, likened to 'Damage Inc' and 'Battery', closes the album the same way 'Hardwired' opened. Uptempo speed metal, a youthful sounding James. Theme is about the extinction of Mankind by machines.Breakneck guitar solos, likened to "Kill Em All" era Metallica and "Metal Militia", Kirk and James harmonize vocals. Lyrical snippet: "Finally cure the earth of man. Exterminate, speeding up the revolution. Long live machine, the future supreme. Man overthrown, Spit Out the Bone".

This sounds fucking amazing. I love all the Load/ Reload references. Moth into Flame already sounded like Reload...just faster and heavier. I love it.

So glad to hear there's a song like One/Fade to black/ Sanitarium.

My god, I can't wait..

The reddit poster updated their post so I thought I'd update mine with the new information too, but seriously this album sounds incredible.

Oh man. I was already pumped. but now, SO. DAMN. HYPED!

I wonder if this album album will be their swan song album? Seeing as how they are very concerned with their legacy at this point, if this album is extremely well received it just may be. Although I always envisioned this album and one more after. They definitively don't seem the type to milk it like other bands have/will(*cough* Slayer *cough*).

Nah, James said today he doesn't really give a fuck whether people like it or not, if people don't like it, whatever, they make music they want to listen to, if people do then listen to it with them. They said they wanted to do what they're doing for as long as they can and Rob is already thinking of the next album.

Should add to this that ESP literally carbon copied James' original 84 Explorer. As you put up a more classic looking one.

SO-WHAT-2.jpg

Dimensions identical. It's the sort of thing that goes on a lot in guitar making (especially cheap brands) but when GIbson see a company carbon copying a guitar and it selling bucketloads they will go after companies.Gibson sell an 84 reissue Explorer which is a recreation of the exact model Hetfield used to play. So they don't want ESP muscling in on that market.

Personally i think the newer Metallica ESPs are horrendous but he plays them because he has a contract with them.

There is gear discussion with James' tech on Youtube where he says James buys original EX's off ebay all the time as well. He didn't buy mine when i sold it though :( They go for crazy money now. I sold mine for the price i paid for it. Doh!

Yeah I was trying to find a pic of his explorer from the 80s but couldnt get a good pic. Thanks!
