Don't agree. Megadeth are much better songwriters than Metallica, always have been. Metallica are the bigger act, but they write metal that is less interesting, more straightforward and more obvious than Megadeth. Megadeth are also the more technical band, and their songwriting is much more sophisticated than Metallica.

Metallica could never write A Train of Consequences, A Tout Le Monde, or In My Darkest Hour.

This new Metallica album, from what I've heard, sounds really uninspired and hollow. It sounds like stock metal.
I disagree with your assesment of Metallica, but I dearly love Peace Sells, Rust, and now Dystopia. To be honest, they're the only three Megadeth albums I've ever really given my full attention span to.

If you could recommend only two Megadeth albums other than the ones I listed, which ones would they be?

Cliff Burton was probably the best thing that happened to Metallica.

And I'd recommend 'Killing Is My Business...' and 'Youthanasia'.

Killing is my business and business is good
Then it's a toss up between Youthananisa, Cryptic Writings and Countdown to Extinction

Anyone else finding this album as underwhelming as me, and baffled at the amount of time it's taken Metallica to produce another medicore kinda-thrashy-but-mostly-not album needs to listen to the last three Overkill albums because each one has been thrash excellence. These guys are seriously waving the flag of American thrash and they're fucking crushing it.

But all you really need is Ironbound. The rest of them, including their new single, all sound the same. And I love Overkill. But they've sounded insanely similar for years.

They evolved and expanded their catalog. I don't see the issue, they don't need to be put in a box and make the same music over and over. AJFA sounds nothing like Kill Em All and has like two thrash songs and no one complains, a lot of MoP and RTL are mid-tempo as is the vast majority of AJFA.

They also didn't spend 8 years making the album, they started Hardwired at the end of 2014 and finished this summer.

I'm glad they've expanded and explored their sound and Hardwired is a more groove oriented mid tempo album and its fine to not have a personal taste for that style of music. But there's nothing wrong with them making it. Maybe it's time to step back and appreciate what they do for what it is rather than nitpick and compare it to what it isn't.

I thought it was routinely accepted that Metallica wrote simpler and less sophisticated songs than Mustaine/Megadeth? I mean, not necessarily a bad thing...but just looking at any of the guitars or the rhythms, this isn't really up for debate.

What IS up for debate is what you LIKE more, or what you think SOUNDS better.

For me, that is also Megadeth.

Yeah, it really isn't debatable that Megadeth is far more technical. I was listening to Rust In Peace today and the way that the bass parts weave in and out of songs and how the leads interact, with the other parts and the vocals. Just a good damn masterpiece of metal.
Personally love both bands though. No favoritism here.

As a casual fan of both, I'd say Megadeath has the more complex instrumentation that interacts really well but their vocals usually just sound like noise (Hangar 18, Peace Sells), while Metallica has better lyrics/vocals but sort of lazy instrumentation that they hit out of the park once in a while (Battery, One) for sure

like tbh Enter Sandman opens really good but after the signature opening the song just sort of instrumentally becomes lazy and never goes anywhere after it. But the lyrics are unforgettable.

Anyway, shamelessly stolen from Reddit again. Unreleased lyrics from the album.

Now That We're Dead:

When Darkness falls/ may it be/ that we should see the light
When repear calls/ may it be/ that we walk straight and right
When doubt returns/ may it be/ that faith shall permeate our scars
When we’re seduced/ then may it be/ that we not deviate our cause
All sinners, a future/ all saints a past
Beginning, the ending/ return to ash
Now that we’re dead, my dear/ we can be together
Now that we’re dead my dear/ we can live forever
When all is pain/ may it be/ it’s all we’ve ever known
When flame consumes/ may it be, it warms our dying bones
When loss has won/ may it be/ it’s you im madly fighting for
When kingdom comes/ may it be/ we walk right through that open door
All sinners, a future/ all saints a past
Beginning, the ending, return to ash
Now that we’re dead, my dear/ we can be together
Now that we’re dead my dear/ we can live forever
All sinners, a future/ all saints a past
Beginning, the ending, return to ash
Now that we’re dead, my dear/ we can be together
Now that we’re dead my dear/ we can live forever
We shall live forever

Halo On Fire:

Obey/Obey/Come Won’t you Stay
Sincery (?)/ Sincere/ all ends in tears
Endure/endure/ thoughts most impure
Concede/ Concede/ but both shall we bleed
Oh halo on fire/ this midnight knows it well
Fast, is desire/ creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light/ for darkness wont go away
Fast is desire/ turn out the light/ halo on fire
Allure/allure/ sweetness obscure
Abide/ abide/ secrets inside
Deprive/deprive/ to feel so alive
Obey/obey/ just don’t turn away
Oh halo on fire/ the midnight knows it well
Fast is desire/ creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light/ for the darkness wont go away
Fast is desire/ turn out the light/ halo on fire
Prayers cannot get through/ return to sender
Unto which of you/ shall I surrender
Twisting in disguise/ dark resurrection
Lighting up the skies/ wicked perfection
Too dark to sleep/ cant slip away
Open or close/ my eyes betray
Beyond the black/ come wont you stay
Hello darkness/ say goodbye/ hello darkness/ say goodbye
Hello darkness/ say goodbye

Dream No More:

He sleeps under black seas waiting/ lies dreaming in death
He sleeps under cosmos shaking/ stars granting his breath
He wakes as the world dies screaming/ all horrors arrive
He wakes giving earth its bleeding/ pure madness alive
And he haunts you/ and he binds your soul
And he loathes you/ he reclaims it all
You then turn to stone/ cant look away/ you turn to stone/ madness they say
Cthulu, awaken
He sways in abyss returning/ inhailing black skies
He shares with a torture burring/ all lost in his eyes
And he haunts you/ and he binds your soul
And he loathes you/ he reclaims it all
You then turn to stone/ cant look away/ you turn to stone/ madness they say
Cthulu, awaken
You then turn to stone/ cant look away/ you turn to stone/ madness they say
Sanity taken/ seething damnation
Cthulu, awaken/ (wake) winged salvation
Death by creation cthulu awaken/ (wake) dreaming no more
cthulu awaken/ (wake) dreaming no more
cthulu awaken/ (wake) dreaming no more

ManUnKind:

Chaos/ awaiting for adams return
Madness/ smiling as we watch it burn
Ive become
Hostage to my mind/ left myself behind
Blind lead blind/ quest to find/ faith in man(un)kind
Garden / of eden, so simple and pure
Greedy/ needy must we have more
Ive become
Hostage to my mind/ left myself behind
Blind lead blind/ quest to find/ faith in man(un)kind
Fascinate/ partner of insanity/ decimate/ lessons we never learn
Dominate/ killing of the innocence/ deviate/ and to dust you return/yeah
Seized by the day/ frozen captive by the night
Seized by the day/ all the dark days of your life
Seized by the day/ frozen captive by the night
Led so astray/ all the dark days of your life
Zero/ reset, creation of man
Foolish/ ready, to witness again?
Ive become
Hostage to my mind/ left myself behind
Blind lead blind/ quest to find
faith in man(un)kind/ faith in man(un)kind/ oh, faith in man(un)kind
faith in man(un)kind/ oh, faith in man(un)kind

Confusion:

Wake to face the day/ grab this life and walk away
War is never done/ run through the trench and battle on
Make it go away/ please make it go away
Confusion/ all sanity is now beyond me/ delusion/ all sanity is but a memory
My life…/ the war that never ends
Leave the battlefield/ yet its horrors never heal
Coming home from war/ pieces don’t fit anymore
Make it go away/ please make it go away
Confusion/ all sanity is now beyond me/ delusion/ all sanity is but a memory
My life…/ the war that never ends
Father please come home/ shell shocked from all I’ve known/ father please come home
Label from a deadwood soldier now/ cast away and left to roam
Rapid is the road to sacrifice/ just takes longer to come home
Confusion/ all sanity is now beyond me
Delusion/ crossfire ricoches inside me/ trapped in a memory forever
My life… the war that never ends.

Here Comes Revenge:

Little grave im grieving. I will mend you
Sweet revenge im dreaming, I will end you
Ive been here since dawn of time/ countless masters(?) build my shrine
I was born in anger’s flame/ he was abel, I was cain
I am (?)/ im still untouched
Burn your kingdom to the ground/ to the ground
Here comes revenge, just for you/ revenge, you can’t undo
Revenge, is killing me/ revenge, set me free
Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth
A life for a life, its my burden(?) of proof
Revenge/ just for you/ revenge
You ask forgiveness, I give you sweet revenge
I return(?) this nightmare(?), I will find you
Sleepless, cloarid in despair, im behind you
Man has made me oh so strong/ blurring lines of right and wrong
Far to late for frail amends/ now its come to sweet revenge
Desperate hands/ that lose control
Have no mercy on your soul/ on your soul
Here comes revenge, just for you/ revenge, you cant undo
Revenge, is killing me/ revenge, just set me free
Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth
A life for a life, its my burden of proof
Revenge, just for you/ revenge
You ask forgiveness, I give you sweet revenge
Here comes revenge, just for you/ revenge, you can’t undo
Revenge is killing me/ revenge, set me free
Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth
A life for a life, its my burden of proof
Revenge, just for you/ revenge
You ask forgiveness, I give you sweet revenge/ sweet revenge

Am I Savage?:

Ooooh, run away, the fast will bite again, ooh, no matter where you dwell
You, here again, a captive of the howl, you, welcome back to hell
Faithful, as the full moon is rising, beauty and the beast are colliding
Sharpened edge tough liquid flame, deepened seed soars(?) angers reign(?)
Arching back, shape shift derange, father, how I watched you change
Am I savage?, scratching at the door
Am I savage? I don’t recognize you anymore
Ohh/ tooth is fang, twisting under skin/ ooh foul tongue, black breath
Change/ snap inside, the beast about complete/change/ soon infects the beast
Faithful, as the full moon is rising, beauty and the beast are colliding
Sharpened edge tough liquid flame, deepened seed soars(?) angers reign(?)
Arching back, shape shift derange, father, how I watched you change
Am I savage?, scratching at the door
Am I savage? I don’t recognize you anymore
Oooooh (no idea what comes next) the past has bit again/ oooh/ the next rider of anarchy
Feel/ stretching skin so far beyond belief/ I feel/ the ever changing, you in me.
Am I Savage?/ scratching at the door
Am I Savage?/ Howling evermore
Am I savage?/ I don’t recognize me anymore/anymore
Anymore/ ha ha ha/ Am I Savage?

Murder One:

One crown/ shines on through the sound
One crown/ born to lose
One man/ does not give a damn
One man/ no excuse
Aces wild/ aces high/ all the aces/ aces til you die
White lines fading/ the iron horse rolls on and on and on
Hear your thunder/ still feeding back
Still hear your thunder, the man in black
Born to lose/ living to win
One fist/ hammers through the mist
One first/ steady on
One heart/ Die Hard from the start
One heart/ beats its song
Murder all/ murder one/ gimme murder/ second class to none
Headlights fading/ the iron horse rolls on and on and on
Hear your thunder/ still feeding back
Still hear your thunder/ the man in black
Born to lose/ living to win
Hear your thunder/ still feeding back

Spit Out the Bone:

Come into me and you will feel perfection/ come into me and dedicate(?)
Come into me, youll never feel reflection(?) come into me and terminate (?)
Remove your heart, its only good for bleeding
Bleeding through your (?) skin
Remove your thought cause its only for decieving
Deceiving(?) thoughts destroy within/ disappear like man was never here
Long live machine/ the future supreme
Man overthrown/ spit out the bone
Plug into me, I guarantee devotion/ plug into me and dedicate(?)
Plug into me and ill save you from emotion/ plug into me and permeate(?)
Accelerate, utopian solution/ finally cure the earth of man
(?) speeding up the evolution
Set on course a master plan (?) the earth (?)
(?) speeding up the evolution
Long live machine/ the future supreme
Man overthrown/ spit out the bone
The future betrays the rush/ your man has had his time
We lay man down to rest/ machine the new divine
Stop breathing(?)/ and dedicate to me/ stop dreaming(?)/ and terminate for me
All misleading(?)/ you dedicate to me/ all feelings/ you terminate for me
(?) like man was never here
Long live machine/ our future supreme
Your man overthrown/ spit out the bone, yeah

Same boat. Except I'm getting the deluxe vinyl as soon as I have the funds. (I've been robbed by Watch Dogs 2 and FFXV)

All of the songs I've heard from Hardwired all sound the same. It all sounds really cheesy, too.

Just... really insular music.

Snippets starting to leak out a bit. Heard a bit of Now That We're Dead and Halo On Fire. The former has a bit of a Load vibe to it. Halo On Fire had some cool vocal harmonies and James screaming going into a slower-tempo chorus. James honestly sounds great. Short clips, but promising sounds.

Heard it too. Personally wasn't feeling the clips but I was listening through computer speakers.
But yeah a lot compared it to load/reload but heavier.

Listened to almost all of the album.
Halo On Fire is going to blow your guys' minds. Not even an exaggeration to say it's one of the best things they've written. It's better than any of the Unforgivens.

People who expect lots of thrash on this album are going to be sorely disappointed. But for those with an open mind there's a lot here, it's really groove oriented. Visions of black and Load but heavier.

Production is really good too.

Good they have decided to move away from complete trash.

Heavily disagree. The production is really dry.

I grew out of Metallica, and most heavy metal, years ago. Listening to this new Metallica stuff after having broadened my horizons and learning to love and appreciate different styles of music reveals just how vapid and hollow this sounds. It also sounds incredibly cheesy, almost as if it's a band parodying heavy metal music. I just can't take this shit seriously. And also the title: "Hardwired... To Self Destruct"? It's like something a kid in high-school would think up.

I also really dislike how insular this style of music is.

Nuh-huh dude, you just don't like the grandiose!! :p

"North noted that classical and heavy metal music both attracts listeners with similar personalities but dissimilar ages. Younger members of the personality group apparently go for heavy metal, while their older counterparts prefer classical. However, both have the same basic motivation: to hear something dramatic and theatrical, a shared “love of the grandiose,” he said."

I don't hear what's so grandiose about this music.

Most (lyrical) music has a level of cheese to it. You're taking poems and putting them to a melody. It's kind of cheesy.

I get peoples tastes changing over the years, though I've mostly added to my interests in music, not removed old ones. Whatever, to each their own. But, this slightly elitist tone people like to use when talking about why they moved away from agressive music can get fucked.

"Grew out of..."

"Broadened my horizons..."

Ooh, it all sounds so mature and interesting!

Sorry, you hit on a pet peeve of mine.

I've really liked every song Met have released for this album so far.

Can't wait to hear the whole thing

Screw it - I'll add 'em all to my spotify list. It should hold me over until the new Metallica!

Thanks for the recs!

WAIT NO

As a Megadeth superfan, I must tell you that Spotify only has the Remastered versions of those albums.

The mix on those remastered albums are absolute trash, especially on Rust in Peace where Mustaine had to lay down new vocals tracks because the old tracks were apparently lost.

Find the original mixes on YouTube, or just buy them from Amazon for like a dollar or so.

To recap, stay away from the remastered versions of the first eight albums. Those being Killing is my Business, all of the way through Risk

Heh, I had no idea. I've only started listening to Megadeth a few years ago, so everything I know is from Spotify. It does sound better. I'm listening to Rust now and Five Magics in particular sounds more ferocious in that original version.

You haven't even listened to the album.

Wait the album leaked?

edit: This sounds amazing, man.
Some very intelligent people at a Walmart somewhere in America let this dude walk in and buy the album because they advertised the wrong release date. That dude didn't leak it but he streamed the entire album, I was there to catch it luckily.

Halo On Fire is incredible, so much better than I thought it would be.
Dream No More>Sad But True (imo, could also be hype talking) but it no doubt shits all over Thingy
Confusion intro sounds like it was lifted from Am I Evil and its got some great riffs. Only problem with this song is the lyrics don't match the music at all.
Am I Savage?: Blues rock on steroids, it's also the middle song from the Hardwired album trailer, some great vocal performances here.
Here Comes Revenge: A lot of fun, great riffs, great vocals, going to be a lot of fun to play in the car.
ManUNkind: this one is really the only one I consider to be weak, its not bad it's just really odd and may take a few more listens to get into but it feels like they threw everything at the wall here.
Murder One: Not at all a bad track, cheesy lyrics sure but just really solid and straightforward. Weak in context of a strong album, still stronger than most if not all of their lesser output.
Now That We're Dead: I guess I just had different expectations for this, going to take a while before I can shed those expectations and experience it for what it is, not bad, definitely visions of Enter Sandman.
Spit Out The Bone: definitely Battery done in 2016. I liked it, didn't love it as much as others are but I was incredibly tired by the time it came up in the stream so I might just need another listen.

Lords of Summer 2016: holy fuck was this a surprise. Massive massive improvement over the original. Some lyrics were rewritten, it's faster, heavier, more aggressive, it's got a ton double bass. Production clearly improved a lot. Seriously did not expect this.

Standouts: James's Vocals are on point all around. All these riffs are really good, it's heavy, it's got groove and generally all songs can go without meandering with the exception of ManUNkind. I personally never felt that any of the songs were too long. Despite none of them being particularly complex or taking many weird turns, it feels like they arrive at their destination right on time, though I will say some intro's got a tad bit too long. But I never felt at any time the way I do with some Death Magnetic songs where I feel like the Kanye "when you're waiting for the joke to end" picture but then the song pulls out another solo and verse. Absolutely none of that here. Confusion would be a standout track had it not been for the lyrical disconnect and some over on the Metallica forums feel that the released singles are the weakest of the tracks.
I love all three singles and aside from ManUNkind and Murder One im kind of inclined to agree. But none of these songs I'd consider to be bad.

It's not a thrash album, not at all, but it pulls from their entire musical background thus far excluding DM.

I wouldnt say it's better than DM, it's really an entirely different monster. This one is a beast with a soul whereas DM is an aggressive machine if that makes any sense.

I got my hands on the album. I listened to 3 new songs so far.

I can already say this is much better than DM, and I love DM.

Can confirm that the album has now leaked. Really excited to give it a second listen in full quality. I'll do a review for you guys because I'm a boring person.
