it _is_ pro-communist (note this is the PRC type of communism, not a marxist or socialist stance). the movie benefits from an assumption that the script was strongarmed into this position, as an opposing literary theme would have been censored.

I have to suck it up and apologize peeps.

I was thinking of "The One." From what you guys are saying about this flick, I may have to check it out.

Once again, I'm sorry.

No stress. :p

I saw the all-region DVD version of Hero.... and while it does have flaws, I enjoyed how the story was laid out and, of course, the army's ability to make it rain arrows.

BTW, I didn't see a connection between the movie's theme and communism. I thought it pushed national unity more than anything else.

you have to know a little about the PRC and chinese history. well, not really. all you need to know is that the PRC heavily identifies with the Qin dynasty.

For those who enjoyed Here, you should check out "The Emperor and The Assasin". It's a slow movie, but is a quite interesting variation of the story behind "Hero".....

Hero is a great movie. The first time I saw it, I didn't like it because of all the plot twists. It was really confusing. But I gave it another chance and understood it much better the second time. I own the DVD and pop it in every once in a while. Incredible cinematography and a pretty good story once you figure it out.

See, I know a little bit about Chinese history, but that bit about the PRC I did not.

One thing is for sure, it's worth seeing just for how gorgeous it is.. but as a film, it's just not very good. Sorry. :(

People are hating on Hero? I know the story can be confusing cause half of it is lies but there really are few kung fu movies with a better story. And Azumi has better fight scenes than Hero? You must hate wire-fu but that still takes more skill then having a bunch of extras standing around waiting to get sliced.
Movies like Hero (ancient costume swordsplay genre) is called "wuxia." Calling it Kung-Fu makes it sound like some dumb, Americanized Jackie Chan movie.

Hero was a great movie if you ask me. Maybe I'm just a sucker for long flashbacks, ala Pulp Fiction, CTHD, Kill Bill etc... but I love it when a movie doesn't necessarily movie chronologically, but rather in a way that makes best sense in making a fleshed out, good movie. And man was the movie gorgeous to watch. I really want to go to China some day, assuming I have the means...
