I felt really bad for Playtonic because of the harassment they received after that statement though, I wouldn't want that on a smaller team for a small dialog, so I don't blame them for not speaking up on this. But I dunno, leaving us on the dark with this also sucks too. Makes me kinda conflicted on whether I want the game.

Fans of someone won't just watch the official channel (which has had only three videos in the last nine months for obvious reasons, so they'll be starved for content). Youtube will recommend other content he's been on such as interviews, podcasts, collaborations, etc. And in these, JonTron has laid out his racist beliefs clear as day.

He's produced video content for years, and he was one half of the original Game Grumps duo for a year or so, whose views were regularly around the million mark. He's definitely not a nobody in the gaming community.

Yah, especially small indie devs it wouldn't be wise use this as a lever. Sure, it would gain them few supporters but I'd wager the amount of hate it would also attract would be more than that support.
So not taking a side in this or even mentioning it is the wise choice, as they say, "You have to pick your battles wisely".
Just a quick look at Jontrons newest videos make the situation quite clear, with almost 4 Million views and dislikes nowhere to been seen, it's not the hill they should get on. Sure, I'll applaud them if they take a stance but as it's a game I really want to succeed so I just hope they don't, might be selfish and backwards to think that but alas.

Don't make it sound like greed. You don't know just what kind of backlash they could expect to get and how hard it might hit them financially. Developing and releasing a game is always a huge gamble, and it isn't an exaggeration to say there are likely a number of people whose livelihood are dependent on this game performing when it comes out.
To call it repugnant to want to avoid that potential controversy (which we aren't even sure they're doing) under those circumstances is gross, and foregoes any consideration to the actual situation the developers are in. And that's all without pointing out the fact that not making a statement about it still doesn't really do anything in regards to emboldening or legitimizing JonTron or his views. It's ridiculous that some people are saying that by not making a statement they are tacitly approving of the shit Jon has spewed.
I've said earlier I do wish they would make a statement, but I certainly don't begrudge them if they don't.

Basically they either agree with his views or don't find it offensive enough to come out against it.

I disagree, and I don't think there's any onus on them. You're not guilty by association because you worked with someone that everyone thought was fine at the time, and then choose not to engage with the issue when it comes up later. If this came up 2 years after the game had already come out, my thought wouldn't be, "Hey, they released a game 2 years ago with JonTron in it, they probably support what he says because they haven't denounced it." I feel the same way now even if the game hasn't released yet.
As far as I'm concerned, JonTron has obviously outed himself as a racist, and the status of the Hat in Time devs is that they unknowingly worked with a racist. That's it. There's no shitty until proven innocent. It's just unknown what they think*, same as it would've been if none of this had happened in the first place.
*Although they apparently posted anti-Trump stuff on their Twitter according to some other poster.
In no way does working with someone that was unknowingly a racist and then not offering comment when the world finds out they were a racist make someone complicit in that person's beliefs, lol. It's not about playing coy, there's just no obligation and they aren't complicit in his beliefs just because they don't go out of their way to denounce it. It would be a different matter if he was hired while knowing at the time what was up with him. Would it be nicer if they made a statement? I think so, and would appreciate the clarification. Is everyone free to avoid the game because it makes them uneasy? Yes, obviously. I think that it's silly that folks are so upset in this thread over people avoiding the game for this. But I don't think it's fair to paint them with the same brush just because they haven't (yet) denounced JonTron due to their prior association with him.
