Yeah, I'm gay. And quite right leaning actually. I don't like the community at all and I try to stay away from it as much as possible. For me it's too much focused on lust and sex.

But I still love the way I am, in my own way, and I would never want to change it. I love it when my sexuality gets portrayed in a classy way like in this episode. But when incels even complain about that... I will get viscious as well 💅
What is an Incel? Asking genuinely not rhetorically. And I agree and said as much it was very tastefully and tactfully handled.

Yeah, Qatar still employs slavery. Should they be used as an argument to reinstate it in the West? I swear, some of these rationalizations...
Don't be a fucking idiot no it does not even though it was on the ballot in 5 states in the US this past election. Go figure.

I didn't rationalize it I said his use of the word wasn't incorrect. For fucks sake comprehension.

I know someone just like this IRL. In fact, there is a right wing gay man who happens to be on this message board as well, and doesn’t subscribe to the alphabet soup group think collectivism.

Bill was also more Libertarian.
True. I seriously doubt he would be a Jerry Falwell Moral Majority type but he did have a Tea Party don't tread on me flag in his house which is a little off since that took off under Obama who was never elected in this universe.

That flag is as old as our country.
Made during the American Revolution, hence liberty, hence Libertarians.

That's been figured out, there're lazy fucks who think pointing a gun at someone and using them as animals is OK.

And portraying something real is not advertising it. Homosexuality is inherent to life, you could kill all homosexuals and more will be born. It's a self defeating task to oppose it, but since civilized life is relatively easy compared to the struggles of living off the land and struggling with nature everyday people with time on their hands and empty minds can afford the waste of doing it.

Much better than in the game, I guess back then they weren't that brave to tell this story. I am surprised at those actor performances in secondary role got to be said. At few points it felt like I am watching some high-end movie, which is really not something I am used to in tv shows. It felt like it dragged, but then it made sense. I think I prefer this version to game one. But I do understand that taking agency to tell the story from non-main characters would be weird.

But yeah, I expect nothing less from creator of best TV show known to man, Chernobyl.

For me, this is the first lackluster episode.
  • Again, this was 1 hour and 20 minutes.
    • What was achieved? A touching vignette? Huh...okay.

Watched episode 3. It was the first actually good episode of the show so far. Its the first episode to have any good acting or good story. Its the first episode to have any characters you actually are invested in. Joel and Ellie are not likeable at this point.

Still some flaws. The actions scenes just aren't great. Bill standing in the middle of the street with no cover shooting until he takes a bullet. Frank acting like a complete moron during the apocalypse. Bill just has full electricity and toilet paper 20 years after the world ended and he's never even needed a real dangerous supply run ever. Its just got no actual tension or feeling of danger. Joel and Ellie just walking on the roads. Ellie just explores basements unarmed.

Walking dead is 100x better so far. But this was by far the best of the first 3 episodes.

Completely character-defying.

It's funny how some people are saying if you don't like this episode then you're "close minded"...... Ok, sure.... :pie_eyeroll:

I actually liked the episode, but felt it dragged on a bit. Adding the backstory to Bill was really good
Imagine writing a one hour 20 minute BACKstory for a character that isnt going to have a story going FORWARD. What. The. Fuck. was this even episode/?!?!!?!

I like the foreshadowing we got of savage Ellie in the first part of the episode where it’s clear she enjoyed cutting that infected guys forehead.

Beautifully done. That tiny sequence gave me more hope she can pull off a TLOU 2 Ellie
Nonsense. thats the jump the shark moment for me. Ellie's transformation happens after the events in Winter with David responsible for taking away her innocence. By having her brutally kill a helpless infected that early in the game, they are shortselling the character development that comes later.

what the hell are they even foreshadowing anyway? Season 2 ellie? After killing David, she mopes around and is pretty much done for the rest of the game. This was so unnecessary and out of character.
include original highlights from the game like Joel getting caught in a trap, Ellie and Bill throwing shots at each other and of course the amazing school setting with the bloater in the gym.
Would you rather see all that or a fat old bearded 9/11 truther getting his dick sucked by another dude? I know what I want from The Last of Us. I am surprised we didnt get Nick Offerman's version of this.

maxresdefault.jpg

The bigger problem is that we didn’t get any interaction between Bill and Ellie,
Bingo. Bill handcuffing Ellie and then Ellie breaking out of handcuffs and hitting Bill with a pipe was a highlight of the game. Thats when we see her feisty side for the first time and it is fucking awesome.

I mean look at Ellie here. It wouldve been by far the best moment of the show for Ellie. We are three episodes in and she's done nothing so far other than psychotically kill a trapped zombie.

Agreed ^

A little note though: i think Bill standing like an idiot with no cover actually fits his character, as he was basically you typical redneck/Qanon/flat earther retard, as Frank pointed out.

Did not expect Episode Three to be a mini-movie about people who aren't Ellie and Joel
Bold Strategy Cotton GIF by MOODMAN

Nice love story, but given how the games go, its weird to spend so much time on B&F. I wish to spend as much time as possible with Ellie and Joel because pretty soon
Abby has to wake up at Joel's face o'clock for an early tee time

It's good to see the back story. I was actually hoping the part 1 remake was going to focus more on the lore of these two. Didn't expect what I saw, but it was good for what it was.

That goddamn score before the last meal

people who liked it, be honest, in a rewatch you will skip this episode, it was a short film inside a tv show that adds nothing
I loved it, but I won't rewatch as I typically only watch shows once. So, that part doesn't really apply to me.

This was an amazingly well done episode, period. Not just of this show, but just in general for shows. The acting, writing, direction, everything about it was great. I felt it offered plenty to the show and its weight. It showed us who Frank was, and what Frank was to Bill. Hell, it makes what Bill said to Ellie in the game weigh even heavier as you get to see Frank and their relationship. Personally I feel like what was done here in Bill's arc was much more powerful, and resonated even more so than what we got in the game. By far. Bill's interactions with Joel, offering what he can,
the letter mentioning Tess
, the fact that Joel is clearly still struggling, etc. The bond between Ellie and Joel is strengthening and you see it more in this episode than you did previously.

To me, this felt like the best episode yet. It was different from the game, and in a lot of ways the path was better IMO, and a lot heavier. It's really cool to see a change, and a good one. It's fine to dislike it, it's fine to like it, but it's still funny to me to see folks knocking it cause it's "not like the game." Lol. They made it clear that there would be SOME changes, changes that they think would be better for the show. That would benefit it more. I think watching this show and expecting it to be like the game is a misstep. It's amazing that some things have even been as similar as they have been IMO.

Huh. Offerman performance was great, but this is the weakest episode for me so far. It's weird that they spent the entire episode introducing Bill and have him die in that same episode with minimal interaction between Joel and Tess. Surely they will have more flashbacks to dig deeper into their relationship but still I feel the ordering is just all wrong here. Anyways, looking forward to the next episode.

Neil said post episode in the short behind the scenes that indicated if they could do something better than the base story that they'll deviate.

Now sure I'd love to have seen the trio go through a series of encounters with the infected, but its good to see them deviate and not make it a 1:1. It's a risk here certainly. There will be more deviation for sure. We'd best expect that.

Next week does seem like it will appeal to the people who want some action. I think this is where we will see just how savage Joel can be.

I hope in season 2 we get some background on the Seraphite prophet and how they came to be. One of the notes says she was a prepper who helped to feed her neighborhood and kept the infected at bay and the Seraphites grew from there.

Desperately Seeking Steven

Dear GAF,

There's this guy that I'm totally into. We'll call him Steven. We met while I was trespassing on his property and I clumsily fell into a hole he had dug as a trap. Anyway, he's really hot, has a nice beard, great pecs, and is a fantastic cook. Problem is, I just can't tell if he's gay.

Anyway, while hanging out at his place the other day, I found myself rummaging through some of his belongings and found a Linda Ronstadt music sheet.

Is this a sign that my hole-digging hunk is gay? And if so, what does this mean for Denzel Washington in "Man on Fire?" If my memory serves me correctly, Hot Chocolate himself spends 5-10 minutes of that movie purchasing a Linda Ronstadt CD in Mexico City, getting piss drunk, and listening to "Blue Bayou" over and over again. Let me just say: my imagination is on fire just thinking about the possibilities!

Also, if I like the Roy Orbison version of "Blue Bayou" more than Linda's, does that make me less gay or more gay?

Sincerely,

Hunk in a hole

I feel like this was a woke 'gotcha' episode in the fashion of druckman.

The original game story with Bill, relationship stuff was much more low key and it all ended in an epic action sequence with some good comedy sections along the way.

In the show, they kinda forced this relationship in your face when nothing like that happened in the original, and then close it off and kill the character for no reason. I feel like that cheapens the story.

The episode was well acted, but not true to the original and frankly (pun) worse told.

He was a fan favourite and for very good reasonings. Unfortunately in the TV show all of thos fan favourite elements are removed!
I quite liked the episode but as I said earlier - they removed all of the fan favourite parts!
Well yeah, I didn't mean to say he was a fan-favorite for no reason.

I'm saying the ep was a bit shit because it only revolved around Bill and Hank's backstory and it completely scrapped what happened in the game.

Lol it feels like the flood gates have opened, anyone who seems to say they didn’t like the episode seems to be labelled a homophobe or has a problem with gay people LOL.

Have Resetera rats infiltrated GAF already?

I just wanted to see the damn bloater in this episode but hey I’m a homophobe or have problems with gay people 🤷🏽‍♂️😂
This is exactly what happened on resetera.

The fans of TLOU are not homophobic. The LEAD character in that franchise is lesbian. The entire DLC of the first game was about a gay teen romance. No one gave a shit. The second game had a lesbian makeout scene that leads to a sex scene much like this episode. no one cared then.

If anything, it was the straight sex scene that was mocked and memed for years and still is to this day. What are all those haters? Heterophobics? incels? the incel digs make no sense because incels hate women for not having sex with them and there were no women in this episode. Hell, i remember people who had issues with Tess literally sliding next to Joel in the first episode, no makeout, no sex, no nothing. she just sleeps next to him and people were like this is too much, too needless, too on the nose. Were they homophobic incels too? GTFO.

The problems with this episode are not hard to understand. Imagine remaking a game and then removing fan favorite sections of the game. No bloater? Check. No upside down Joel shooting setpiece? Check? No confrontation with Bill and Ellie? Check. 1 short convo with Joel and apparently we are supposed to be happy with that. Not to mention the fact that the show looks super cheap all of a sudden after a stunning Episode 2. Like someone shot this with an Iphone 3. Bill's town had this bad UE3 quality orange lighting and even that looked more atmospheric than this day time soap opera lighting. But hey, i guess my cinematography complaints are homophobic.

Someone mentioned Up earlier in the thread. Now thats how you do a good love story without stopping the entire fucking show. Do a cold open. Maybe an extended 10 minute one. use that overplayed soundtrack from Max Richter if you have to for the entire montage. But then fucking end it and move on to the main characters who actually survive and go on.

Also to everyone who thinks this is a great love story. go watch more movies. Brokeback Mountain shits on this episode. Now that is a well acted movie. Nick Offerman in this is a parody compared to Heath Ledger's gut wrenching performance in Brokeback Mountain. Watch Atonement. It's not a gay love story but its still way better than this. Then there are love stories featuring side characters in Last of the Mohicans and Legnds of the Fall that are gut wrenching, beautiful and haunting. Which is clearly what they were going for but they made it front and center and failed.

I don’t understand how people are shocked that changes were made for the tv show. HBO knows it has to appeal to a much wider audience than just gamers.

I’ll respect anyone’s opinion if they didn’t enjoy the episode (gay love story isn’t for everyone), but to completely shit on the episode is bonkers. So what if HBO went woke, they diverse the originally casting from the beginning.

It was a wonderful episode. The best episode so far in the series.

Trust the process, there is 2/3 a season left. They will stay true to the game.

Top class episode. My girlfriend was sobbing on my lap multiple times throughout 😂😂😂

I'm really liking the way they keep the general story going but give us a completely different outlook.

Can't wait for the next episode. Things will be getting serious.

Went back and showed her the cutscenes on YouTube for the equivalent part of the story and she really liked seeing that too. The last of us as a game was so far ahead of it's time. True masterpiece we were so lucky to play.

I have to be honest... just finished the ep. I thought it was good. Great even. Decent performances.

But I'm not getting the "literally crying right now" people. Or the people saying it's one of the best episodes of TV ever made (and I'm someone who ranks tlou in top 5 games).

There's definitely a crowd trying to make this ep more than what it really was. I watched it with 2 roommates. One a bisexual woman and not a single tear was shed and we all basically thought. "Oh... that was good". Then chucked on the next ep of mayor of Kingstown and completely forgot about the TLOU ep🤣

Ngl this show looks unstoppable. HBO just dropped gayiest episode I've ever seen, primed for all the usual anti-woke mob throw all the hate they can muster at it, and they've barely made a dent in the show's reputation. The show is so big it's now at the point where it could survive without game fans.

This makes me even more interested to see how TLOU2's story and Abby will be recieved by the TV audiences who tend to be a bit more mature than the general gaming audience.

I dont like this ep , not that its gay . Even if Frank was a woman I still dont like it .

They spend 2 episode to show you how dangerous the fungal are . And in this Episode , you have two dude who "survive" in the apocalype with wine and candle and steak , shiny house , new cloth ,clean curtain ,electricity with the 100dp power generator running 24/7 , still living more comfy like than most people nowaday for 20 years (or sth) in a post-apocalype world .

This show is turning out like Bethesda, each new release is worse than the last.

Didn’t hate EP3, but it was way too long for what it was. Also, why tf was Bill standing in the middle of the street with a scoped rifle, trading shots with heavily armed raiders? Hard to believe a guy who owns 30 guns wouldn’t understand the concept of cover.

Quite embarrassed to wake up this morning and seeing that people can't handle that excellent episode.

Amazing to see a heart warming love story and fleshed out character for Bill who was a fan favourite to me.

I feel this show is adding some alternatives and building on what is one if my favourite games of all time.

Just amazing to me.

Really good episode but not without issues.

My biggest issue was being completely dragged out the world and episode with the stupid 'government is nazi's' bullshit.

It was just so out of place and felt super shoehorned in there just to make a nod to pop/internet culture.

The other was Bill kind of wandering round the street trying to pick off people with a rifle like an AWP in CS1.6 - he had the perfect angle and height from the rooms in the house with cover.

Anyway, aside from that the episode was really strong as a deviation. It will have its fans and detractors. I thought both actors did an amazing job for such an intimate ask. Bit disappointed we didn't see the bloater are are unlikely to now until a big set piece.

Interested in how Pittsburgh is directed now.

Yeah wasn't a fan of the third episode. Could have chopped down the love story by 30 mins and added some Joel/Ellie stuff in there.

Wasn't expecting a love story when it started like a badass post apocalyptic survivalist stuff.

Twist at the end was good though. Got me.

Yes when they go to a place called bills town i expect those events to take place.

And You had no problem with me showering praise all over episode 2 just last week. Literally telling Neil’s haters to suck a dick. I even vehemently defended the kiss all the metoo people went nuts over. It seems to me that I must love everything the gaming industry puts out. Forspoken, dead space, tlou all flawless. All best in class. Is that what you want to hear? Now that would be a miserable existence.

The episode has a 5.8 rating on metacritic. After the 8.9 and 9.1 ratings of the first two episodes. Yes, the fans of this franchise with a lesbian lead have all a sudden turned homophobic…… or like you said in my case insufferable.

I enjoyed the episode. I really liked it.
But it has no place in the bigger picture, this is TLOU, not The Life of Bill and Frank. We didnt have backstory for Tess, Ellie or Marlene, but hey when we have characters happens to be gay, then LETS. MAKE. IT. BIG!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ND Narrative deparment. Int.
Neil Druckmann have some ideas for the TLOU show on HBO and its telling them to his team with enthusiasm.

-As you know, straight people are not worth a cent, they are just worthless, boring, normal. Not worth our time, because what will give us the awards and the recognition we deserve, ladies and gentlemans, are the gays!
So you know what? At this part in the story, we have this couple, which in the game are just more secondary characters, but since it happens that they are gay, we will give them a full length episode, and we will make the gay drama of the century! Everyone will praise us (again!) and everyone will know how incredibly progressive and inclusive I.. I mean, we... are! It's the perfect oportunity to show the world that... we are the most gay caring people in the world!

-Oooh booi, I cant wait, praise is gonna rain all over my face. Dudes. Did I tell you how much I love gays? I can put them all ooooover peoples throats, and it will be fine, because they are gays! If anyone dares to resist, the other gay lovers will fight them and we dont have to even move a finger! This is sooo good. Ooh boi, lets go. Lets go full gay drama in this episode. Yeees. Fuck Ellie and Joel and the infected. Fuck TLOU. We are gonna get our Crown with this, I can see it!!

-But Neil, looks to me that you are more worried about sending a message than telling the story we are trying to tell. How does this 1 hour of secondary drama that ends with both characters dead, contribute to the main story which is the one TLOU fans are looking for?

-Oh my little child, who the fuck cares about that? ITS GAY, AND PEOPLE WILL LOVE IT. BECAUSE ITS GAY!! Thats just how this works. Trust me.

And that scene in tlou2, while being awkward... it was the whole point of that scene. Her relationship with Owen was just awkward and tragic in the end.
