Toshiba Announces Introduction of Second Generation HD DVD Players
Thursday September 14, 3:00 pm ET

Continuing to lead the evolution in high definition DVD, Toshiba introduces new HD DVD models and adds new features including 1080p output capability

CEDIA, DENVER, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") announced today at CEDIA its second generation HD DVD players for the U.S. market. Building upon the success of its first generation units and the market's increased demand for high definition content, Toshiba will introduce two new HD DVD players -- the HD-A2 entry-level model and the top of the line HD-XA2 model.

Featuring the superior video and audio capabilities of the first generation models and implementing key enhancements to further improve product performance, Toshiba's HD DVD players set the new standard in high definition technology.

"We are very pleased with the launch of our players and the progress we have made in the past six months," said Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Toshiba America Consumer Products Digital A/V Group. "I am confident that our HD DVD players, which provide stunning HD image quality with a variety of advanced high resolution audio options, offer a great value for consumers today."

The new high end Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player is designed to output 1920 x 1080p, the highest HD signal currently available, via High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI(TM)) 1.3. HDMI version 1.3 is the most current, major enhancement of the HDMI specification, which adds support for Deep Color technology. The HD-XA2 also incorporates a 297MHz / 12 bit Video DAC with high-quality, 4x oversampling for increased bandwidth for true playback of an HD picture to a video source. The HD-XA2 comes with a picture setting function allowing customers to optimize picture quality with user adjustable settings for color, contrast, brightness, edge enhancement and block noise, among others. The new HD-XA2 HD DVD player's 1080p output capability complements Toshiba's new Cinema Series® Pro LCD TVs, which provide true HD 1080p input capability via HDMI.

The HD-XA2 will be one of the first next generation players to support the video portion of HDMI version 1.3. HDMI 1.3 supports the demands of future high definition display devices, such as Deep Color enabling 36-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 24-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification. This allows Deep Color compatible display devices to deliver outstanding video quality.

And Warner has finally announced Batman Begins for October 10th:

http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=295

Today at CEDIA, Warner Home Video finally assigned long-awaited 'Batman Begins' and 'The Polar Express' on HD-DVD a release date of October 10, after 'Batman Begins' was once speculated to be a launch title waaay back in April.

Have they said what the MSRPs are for those players? It's nice to see that they support 1080p now (even though my set doesn't).

I don't think I'm going to be buying any HBO season sets at $130 a pop. Ouch. I've only bought a couple of their DVD sets because of their $100 MSRP.

Hopefully Battlestar Galactica Season One won't be priced so high, because that's the one set that might push me to buy a HD DVD player. I'm thinking I'll buy the 360 HD DVD player if I decide to make the plunge, since it's so much cheaper than the players out now. We'll see.

nothing announced from Warner for later than October? When will they announce Nov/Dec stuff? Still have my fingers crossed for the Matrix before Christmas.

Why in the hell are they releasing this mini-season of the Sopranos ("Season 6 part 1") first on HD-DVD, but starting with Season 1 for Blu-Ray? Hell with that, Blu-Ray wins for me based on that shit alone!

Isn't it a bit early for Toshiba to release a HD-DVD player without multi-channel analog outs?

Big mistake IMO.

All the ones out now are clones of Toshiba's HD-A1 model...

For the price (currently $400 at various online and dealer shops) it's probably the best value, even with the HD-A2 coming out, since that model will take away the 5.1 analog outputs. Other than that, probably the HD-XA2 will be the best, but that's gonna take a long while to release, though it's gonna have more features like 1080p output.

Even as a regular DVD player though, the upconversion (through HDMI only, not component) the HD-A1 does is supposedly one of the best out there, challenging even other high-end DVD players in that price range.

Making their debut on HD DVD are "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" two uniquely different versions of the story about a boy who discovers a magical world after finding the winning golden ticket in a bar of chocolate. In addition, making their HD DVD debuts are "Batman Begins" and two animated titles: "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" and "The Polar Express" - an animated Christmas Classic and one of Warner Home Video's all-time best-selling family DVD's.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (w/ "In Movie Experience")
Will Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Batman Begins
Corpse Bride
Polar Express

WOW, what a great day of releases... I'm already behind on a bunch of good movies and this will just add to that probably... I'm gonna get Batman Begins for sure, but I can easily see myself wanted the whole lot this time around...

I already have both Wonkas on DVD, but they are a must rebuy for me. Although I'll wait for reviews on the older one to make sure its a good master.

The chances of the PS3 FAILING are approximately zero. Please note that I did not say that the PS3 guarantees Blu-ray will win the format war, simply that its chances will be revived with the PS3 as there will suddenly be a lot more people interested in blu-ray who may buy movies

Actually, there is some serious doubt about that.

What doubt is there?

By 2007 end, in the region of 10 million BD players in people's homes.
Dual layer problems solved
most movies will be in an advanced codec
studios will be confident enough to start including BD extras
90% of studio support vs 50%

Unless HD formats lose entirely, how can BD lose?

Show me the money!

Sony can't even meet their own production numbers!

So until then sit down and shut up...

One thing you are right on though is HD formats are probably going to lose it's too soon!

themanroom.com has just posted a bunch of covers that tell you all the details on the discs:

nice exclusive stuff like Dolby TrueHD & "In Movie Experience" features

they are using the covers from the 2-disc Deluxe DVDs

And since I never owned this on DVD, it's a definite by for me... a flawed, if not still solid Christmas comedy:

On Nov. 28, the studio will release its $197 million-grossing Superman Returns as an HD DVD Combo disc (which has HD DVD on one side of the disc and standard-def on the other) priced at $24.95 and on Blu-ray with a list price of $29.95.

That’s aggressive pricing as most HD DVD and Blu-ray titles carry list prices closer to $35 or $40. Warner has priced Batman Begins—which is believed to be a key title to help push high-def—at $28.99 on HD DVD. That movie bows on Oct. 10.
Since Dead Man's Chest, Cars, and possibly Da Vinci Code have slipped into '07 and with no sign of X3, this is probably the biggest Hi-def release for the year (not counting the late King Kong on Nov. 14th)...

This is pretty unprecedented as most HD DVD/DVD Combo titles (DVD on one side, HD DVD on another) are about $5 more expensive than regular HD DVDs, and new titles add another $5 more. Normally this would be $40, but Warner is gonna offer it for $25.

People without HD DVD Players can buy the movie now and not have to rebuy it if they get an HD DVD Player...

I'm jealous, lol...

I've been ordering a ton through amazon.com, right now I own about 12, and have about 9 pre-ordered (including all 3 MI's).

That said, I think once amazon.com lowers the price I'm gonna get Tokyo Drift. Everytime I read the reviews for other titles I get tempted... My amazon.com Prime trails ends tomorrow, but I ordered Batman Begins, T3, Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride w/ 2-day shipping a few days ago. That's my last big order for a while...

My most anticipated though ($40 MSRP, though hopefully amazon.com does one of those crazy pricedrops like they did with the MI set):

Superman (original), Superman II, Superman II (Richard Donner cut) are all strongly rumoured/leaked to be out the same day as Superman Returns, and all on HDDVD.

Just received Seabiscuit today, and still waiting for my T3, Robin Hood and F&F:TD to ship from Amazon - hurry up you buggers!

So basically, the lineup stands at:

Superman
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Superman Returns

The only one I've seen is Superman Returns (loved it)... I used to watch the black and white TV show on Nick-at-Nite, caught some of Lois and Clarck New Adventures, and a few episodes of Smallville...

After seeing the 14-disc set for $99 MSRP, I started to get tempted just over the last day, but now I think I'll settle for these 3 for the moment...

Seems weird, but no regular Superman II, III, or IV.

Star Wars, at least right now, would be on Blu-ray. However, George Lucas dragged his feet on DVD releases, and I don't see him changing his ways anytime soon. My best guess would be at LEAST 2008. I've heard 2008 for LOTR as well. (Which is from new line- who has yet to release a title for either format. They are supposedly taking a wait-and-see stance on support.)

Yup, though there hasn't been a formal announcement by Disney about them, they said they'd wait until the user-base grew before releasing major hits like that... Da Vinci Code has been announced and is available for pre-order, but Sony said it wouldn't hit the same day as the DVD (even though the date put out by some retailers is Nov. 14th)...

At X06, exciting details about the much-anticipated Xbox 360 HD DVD Player were also revealed. Available in mid-November, 2006 in North America for $199.99 (ESRP), in the U.K., France, and Germany for €199.99 (£129.99) (ESRP), and other territories in 2007, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player comes with the Universal Pictures blockbuster film Peter Jackson's King Kong on HD DVD (for a limited time) and the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote. Users can just add the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to their Xbox 360 to create the ultimate home-theater experience.

"The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is the best high-definition movie experience and value on the market," Moore said. "The reviews, the word of mouth, and the consumer response have all been crystal clear—HD DVD is the format of choice. We're not forcing movie technology on game players, but are instead letting them choose how to personalize their experiences. If they want HD DVD, there's no better value out there."

The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player offers up to six times higher resolution than DVD, and as part of the fall 2006 console update all Xbox 360 consoles will have the ability to output native resolution 1080p games and movies. Users can enjoy blockbuster HD DVD releases, with more than 150 titles available by the holidays from major movie studios including Paramount Pictures, StudioCanal, Universal Studios, New Line Entertainment, HBO, and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Microsoft is going to own with this add-on, especially in Europe where the cheapest HD DVD Player is 600 Euro. That said, there aren't any details on how they could possibly get Dolby TrueHD out of the system or what sort of audio specs it supports...

you'll get advanced codecs out the optical cable on the 360. TBH, while analogue out would be good, anyone wanting it would likely prefer a standalone player anyway. and coax out on my A1 sounds great - way better than DVD.

I'm tempted to get one of these even though I have an A1. I'm gettting Kong anyway, so that drops the effective price by £15.

I've been waiting for this news since the A1 came out. It had just enough wrong with it to know everything would be made better with a gen 2 machine.

I am a little unhappy that it won't do 1080p though. I couldn't wait an extra month and got an HLR56 at a good price instead of holding out for the HLS's. However, if I get a 1080p tv in the next year or two it will also mean the $500 hddvd player will need to be replaced.

So do I get the A2 when it comes out or somehow hold out? The only thing making this a possibility is just how damn expensive November is going to be anyways.

And on the other hand, in 1-2 years, hddvd players will probably be at least half the price.

Looks like the 360 is going to be my HD-DVD player, and looks like I'm getting into HD DVD in November. And I get King Kong to boot.

thank you microsoft.

(funny that for the price of the HD DVD kit and Wii I still won't spend as much on that as a PS3).

You know what, that's a pretty damn good point. If I can't get 1080p right now anyways, the $200 360 one should suffice until I'm ready.

I've been so anti "consoles shouldn't be used as dvd players" that I never even thought of the possbility.

I'm thinking I might jump on the 360 HD-DVD player. Especially if you factor in a free King Kong disc, which I wouldn't mind owning. That, and the Superman I and Superman II: Donner discs, along with Battlestar Galactica season one will prove too tempting for me to resist, I think.

Oh yeah, I remember why I didn't want the 360 hddvd. No HDMI. Boo.

Even if there isn't a quality difference, I don't think I could ethically go from using HDMI for my upconverter to back to using component.

according to the way the PR is worded from MS, the 360 WILL be capable of 1080p. from the sound of it definitely out VGA, and possibly out component (can 1080p sets even accept 1080p over component?)

Well if I get the 360 hddvd, it will be because I'm not worrying about 1080p at the moment.

I guess the comparison then would be between 720p/1080i over component or hdmi. I haven't seen any actual side shots, but I'd assume hdmi looks better.
