Mouse is pretty annoying though. Charges fairly slowly for me and is unusable during that time. Don't have to do it very often but still annoying. Would much rather have the cable coming out of the front so I could use while charging.

Agreed, the mouse decision is strange. A misstep like the old puck mouse design.

feeling good about my decision to wait a year now. I would expect ~$200 price cut, better processors, and 32GB RAM option by the time I'm ready to buy

What was the model of your 2nd hand MacBook?
It's the late 2013 model to be fair, so I guess maybe there are other more striking differences too, but for my girlfriend it's perfect - it's had a wrap since day 1 so is in perfect condition, rarely used (25 battery cycles) and still a bit of AppleCare left. Or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself I did the right thing lol

I was seriously considering getting on of these new Macbooks but I'm really reconsidering now. It's just so crazy expensive. I mean, I could get the variant without the TouchPad but I always want the 'best' version. Maybe I should just go ahead and take that money and build an insane Hackingtosh.

I really need to invest for a proper good film camera one day. But I don't have a proper computer to edit on. It would be great to have an amazing new 13" or 15" mobile Macbook to edit on. But maybe it'd be better to just have an even more amazing desktop computer to work on. And keep my current 2011 Macbook for on the road proxy workflow editing.

I bitch about Apple but I've been playing Xbox One in another room while I left my iMac logged into Windows 10 and I come back to find that in my absence Windows decided to reboot my computer, presumably to install one of its far too regular updates. I still can't threaten to leave the Mac when Windows and its updates is still as intrusive as it has always been.

Apple has confirmed to Nilay Patel (The Verge) that it will no longer make displays.

I feel really sad about this, and don't understand how with all of Apple's money, they couldn't just continue slapping LG displays in a nice aluminum case. But then I don't understand a lot of Apple's decisions regarding the Mac line in the past three years.
Guess we saw it coming. Shame as I liked the unified design when paired with a Mac Pro or Mac mini or other Mac. Especially if they had a matching one and someone elevated it to line it up with the iMac's display. Put one on each side and you have a neat looking iMac triple display setup that looks nice. (With huge ass bezels though.)

Guess I'll be looking at that LG then. So expensive..

But USB-C goes in either direction just like the Lightning connector. I don't see how it's more awkward.
It's awkward because the plug needs to dock into the small "male" part of the phone (or whatever kind of device).

also, not sure if it's been brought up in here, but Apple says no 32 GB RAM option with the MBP because of battery life concerns.
The fuh? They're not even using LPDDR4, either. :/

Apple, pls!

I ended up going with a 2015 refurb. Seemed to be the best mix of price, performance, and portability for me. This will be my first Mac.

That's actually a really good price for that. Apple refurbs are a smart deal.

To those who changed their minds on purchasing the new MacBook Pros ( my reason is the price hike), what are you going to order instead?

I'm looking into the Razer Blade, Razer Blade Pro, Surface Book, Surface Studio, Dell XPS 13 or 15. I'm also considering the Base MacBook Pro 2016 without Touch Bar.

These are pricey options, but they seem great. I'm thinking about getting the Surface systems as a present to an artist friend.

Thank god they're getting out of the monitor business. 4K monitors with minimal bezel are already pretty easy to find. There's not a whole lot of design muscle Apple can bring to that product segment.

This is an excellent question.

The alternatives to the MBP (512GB and 8GB of RAM) are all similarly priced in my opinion.

Thats the problem, the comperable laptops all have their own issues and cost about the same anyway. The base Macbook Pro doesnt seem that expensive when you see the price for an XPS 13 with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd and a high res display

I was looking forward to these but the extremely high (higher than normal) entry price plus the lack of conventional USB ports killed this for me. I just got a MBP in May so I don't really need the upgrade anyways.

Because they simply don't need to make them. They probably weren't really a money maker.

I haven't seen any aluminum bodied glossy 4k/5k monitors anywhere.

I have heard so many horror stories related to Razer's quality control and customer service on the Blade's I have no idea why anyone would consider them given how expensive of a purchase they are.

All the ones I've seen are inelegant black, plastic things. I mean, I have a couple myself right now, but it doesn't mean I like looking at them. Apple's displays always looked leagues better than other PC display manufacturers.

I would assume this is because not many people were buying their monitors and instead were buying from other vendors.

Just a guess. They could have also discontinued to be greedy fucks.

So if no monitor business - iMacs are dead?

iMac is still fine, just no more standalone Cinema Displays. But it might be a sign that the Mac mini and Mac Pro's days are numbered.

If they discontinue the Mac Pro, they'll give the same reason. "No one was buying our three year-old Mac that we never updated." Seems like they set up the display to fail because they never cared about it in the first place.

Apple has I think been selling standalone displays since the early-80's with the Apple ][ line and then early Mac II's, then the Studio Display line, and finally the Cinema Displays. It hurts to see a product line with such a deep legacy be casually discontinued with a tweet.

They have really gotten shitty about upgrading the internals of their hardware.

I don't really understand it. It did not seem to be this bad in the past.

They are making a mistake if they get rid of the mini, air and Pro completely. They can't just serve the high end consumer. It benefits them greatly to make pro machines and budget machines to get people on Mac OS.

What annoys me though is people acting like Apples under Jobs never did any whacky shit. They had plenty of failures and bad decisions under him as well. I still like a lot of what they do and they definitely deserve criticism for certain failures such as taking forever to upgrade internals and selling old ass shit without reducing price.

To be fair, I don't think anyone was buying the Mac Pro when it was brand new either. That's probably why they never bothered updating it.

They did, but it was never quite this bad.

I work at a production company. We mostly edit/do post work and my boss is probably one of the only few people who use Final Cut Pro X and loves it. My coworker and I were talking about the event and how neglected its making us 'professionals' feel

It kinda dawned on me that Apple's next step is ARM, right? They don't care about professionals, no more cinema displays, no Mac Pro update, and they're tired of waiting on Intels new chips to release their products. As soon as they get to a certain point where power/performance/battery is 'good enough' for college kids and whatnot, I think they're gonna switch. And that made me feel awful.

A move to ARM on the Mac at this point would be suicidal. Professional market would completely evaporate and even casual users would have to get new software, forget about using Windows, etc.

When the majority of your business now centers around selling $600 phones to people who mostly use it for Instagram, Twitter, and messaging, I guess it's harder to keep your eye on the professional ball.

This drum beat started back in 2013 with the introduction of the redesigned Mac Pro. Apple got rid of the venerable and amazingly efficient Mac Pro tower design and replaced it with a small tube in which professionals are expected to have a small island chain of external devices attached to it. The Mac Pro is not a form factor in which power efficiency is a high priority, and yet they still neutered it. People like me who have a MP tower saw nothing good in that design, and so we've kept our slowly-decaying towers. Combine this with no updates to the new design in three years, and Apple now has a great reason to can it.

So is Apple purposefully trying to set up reasons to kill off members of the Mac product family? I don't know, but it's a good conspiracy theory.

The display business doesn't make much sense for Apple today anyway. It made sense back when Macs used different video connectors than PCs, so you didn't have as much choice in displays, but now it's all pretty standard.

A lot of pro's are feeling burned by Apple. I believe Leo Laporte said that his video editors have moved to PC workstations for editing the podcasts since Adobe Premiere works on Windows.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Ye its weird to me why people getting all upset and worked up over displays. Its not like Apple invented their own technology, they were just LG displays. So much choice in the market right now why would you want one more over priced product from Apple?

Can someone describe how the best Macbook 13inch with the oled bar stacks up with the best 15inch one? Apple.com is extremely slow for me right now

Yup. There's worse things to be upset about, like stuff Apple actually makes. (Mac Pro, etc.)
