Henry Cavill is the new Superman

I thought they weren't using Williams music

and if they are, they shouldn't. I know, I know, you're never gonna improve on it, but can we PLEASE do some new Donner legacy Superman? Please?

"We're expecting something really cool for Warner Bros. Pictures' Man of Steel this weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con, but in the meantime we've got news on the first teaser trailer for the film and quotes from director Zack Snyder and composer Hans Zimmer.

The Alberta Film Ratings has given the new teaser a G rating and states that it is 1 minute and 27 seconds long, so stay tuned for when it comes online!

Zack Snyder also stopped by the Art Center of College of Design in Los Angeles yesterday to speak about his entire career and he offered a nice tidbit into the pre-production and casting of his Superman movie:

We had about 500 guys initially. We did this massive auditioning madness. It got down to the usual suspects in a pretty quick order. Henry Cavill was actually the first one we physically tested on film. We actually tested him in the Christopher Reeves Superman suit. And that was a big deal. That’s a hard suit to pull off. Trust me. If you’re just standing there in that suit, it’s dodgy. It felt like we just bought it a costume shop. Plus, there’s no mask. I’ve been around a few superhero costumes, and it’s weird because when you’re in the Superman costume it’s just you from the neck up. And somebody just combed your hair. But Henry came out of the trailer when we were shooting a test and everybody thought Okay, that’s Superman. He was awesome and did a great job.

Another man tirelessly working on Man of Steel is Hans Zimmer. Having just wrapped The Dark Knight Rises, Zimmer spoke with Danny Graydon about working on the film and was asked if he's confident taking on the project:

I don’t feel confident at all. I never feel confident. But, a little bit of fear has gone a long way to being inspiring in the past. John Williams is the master and I am not even going to try and go in that direction. I’ll try my best not to embarrass myself and my colleagues on the film. I’m definitely going to have a go! In a funny way, it’s exactly because Superman is such an opposite character to Batman that I am welcoming the opportunity to do the music.

It looks like this adaptation of Superman is gearing up to be one for the ages. The June 14, 2013 release also stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Harry Lennix, Laurence Fishburne and Richard Schiff."

Williams score *theme* isn't being used. No reason at all to use it in a teaser/trailer.

We got a trailer coming folks...

Oh shit. 1:27?

The movie has sounded and looked like crap so I don't know why anybody should be surprised at some early negative reports as dubious as they are.

wut :\ Casting and even the small plot summary has already made it more interesting then Superman Cosplaying the Donner film Returns.

Snyder spoke at my school yesterday (Art Center College of Design) and he was a pretty nice, affable and funny guy. Didn't talk too much about Man of Steel, but said they were currently coloring a trailer to play in front of Dark Knight Rises and at Comicon. It was interesting to hear him talk about the casting process...apparently it was a few hundred people over the span of a few months and he talked about how it came down to Cavill, Matt Bomer and some guy from True Blood, whose name I can't remember. He said that one of the things that sold him on Cavill was that when he wore the original Christopher Reeve suit, he was able to pull it off pretty stunningly (which is apparently pretty hard to do with the suit in real life).

Anyway, yeah. Still don't really care for any of his movies besides Watchmen, but he's an alumnus of my school and a pretty nice guy so I'll wish him well on this one.

hah I posted about this above. Cool that you were there in person. Wonder if the comic-con trailer might have more footage.

Hans Zimmer Talks Superman Score

"Last week, I interviewed composer Hans Zimmer for EMPIRE to discuss his score for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES for the mag’s TRACK BY TRACK feature. At the end of our 40-minute chat – and before a Warner Bros flack called time - the subject inevitably turned to Zimmer’s equally high-profile follow-up gig, SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL. Zimmer had pointedly nixed the idea of potentially doing Superman (“ No - and I’m not thinking of rewriting Beethoven’s ninth either. It just sounds like a thankless task, you know? So that’s unequivocally a “no”…”) before, surprisingly, doing a complete U-turn and accepting the gig to score the highly-anticipated feature, likely down to the fact that it is being produced by his Batman and Inception collaborator, Christopher Nolan.

“When the rumours came out that I was going to do Superman, the fact was that nobody had asked me!” says Zimmer, who swiftly realised that his off-the-cuff comments could be interpreted that he was actively being sought for the film. ”The horrible thing was that I had never met Zack Snyder and, suddenly, poor Zack must have been reading that the crazy German is going to be doing my movie and I’ve never even met him! So, I had to squash those rumours. Plus – and let’s be honest – I am only human and John Williams is super-human. That Superman theme is beloved and iconic. It’s a pretty hard act to follow and it’s like me saying to you can you turn this interview in to a decent piece of Shakespeare. You’ll say “Maybe not today…!”

”I phoned Zack and said I am really, really sorry about these rumours – it wasn’t me, it’s just a misunderstanding. You’ve got your composer and I never tried to get in between relationships or anything like that. We started talking and he told me about his ideas for the character and his take was really interesting. I started getting a couple of ideas as a result. I said to Zack – and Warners and Chris [Nolan] and everyone involved – “don’t talk to me about it until we finish [The Dark Knight Rises]“ …. and, within 15 minutes of finishing it, we were talking about it.”

So, despite his earlier, extreme reticence about the task of remaking one of the most famous themes in Film music, does he now feel confident that he has a strong course to pursue?

“I don’t feel confident at all. I never feel confident. But, a little bit of fear has gone a long way to being inspiring in the past. John Williams is the master and I am not even going to try and go in that direction. I’ll try my best not to embarrass myself and my colleagues on the film. I’m definitely going to have a go! In a funny way, it’s exactly because Superman is such an opposite character to Batman that I am welcoming the opportunity to do the music.”

Has he seen footage from the film? “Yes. All you’re going to get out of me is a “yes”! No elaborations! I’ve started it and am in the ideas phase. I am driving people crazy with my experiments and am trying to write a tune.” The one thing Zimmer will say is that his signature use of percussion – which he jokingly refers to as “his endless quest for the perfect drum-hit” will not be as prevalent in MAN OF STEEL as on his Batman scores. “I am going to try and avoid it. It’s a big conversation I am having with myself right now: how can we avoid that…!!“

It’s interesting to speculate whether there was actually another composer lined up to do MAN OF STEEL and who was dispensed with once Zimmer expressed serious interest, or that there wasn’t and Zimmer just assumed there was someone in place. Whatever the case, it’s very encouraging to know that Zimmer is entirely aware of the enormity of his task and that he will not only be steering away from the dark, sturm-und-drang of his Batman work but also Williams’ approach. Time will tell…"

Sounds right for a first teaser. I expect that the SDCC panel might have more footage.

If they pull it off as well as they did for the teaser with RETURNS then I can last the wait until December for the first full trailer.

That's kinda funny that the made up rumors about Zimmer working on Superman is what made him contact Zack Snyder which resulted in him actually working on the movie.

I like Zimmer, and I'm glad he realized that aping Williams will only lead to a pale imitation. Make your own sound for a Superman film for a new generation.

Jesus that cast is terrible. Best of luck to Zimmer, love how humble he is

What is exactly terrible about the cast?

IMO, John Ottman did an amazing job of incorporating the original theme and expanding upon that. The score for Returns was amazing.

Haha that's insane. I thought he was terrified of the prospect of working on the Man of Steel due to John William's legendary score. Glad he's back on it though, if anyone can create another iconic Superman score, it's Zimmer (possibly with the help of James Newton Howard lol).

Yeah I think the casting for the Kents and Jor-El is great. I'm not a fan of Amy Adams though.

new Batman theme is cool but I don't think it's exactly iconic. Nothing will top Williams' Superman theme so that's out. But he will probably do a good job.

The last truly iconic superhero score was probably Spiderman imo.

Laurence Fishburne as Perry White comes to mind. Russel Crowe as Jor El is a sign that once again Jor el is going to get far more screen time than he needs.

I'm just not a fan of sticking a big name in as many roles as possible in one film.

Fuck that noise. Whenever I hear Molossus I instantly think Nolan's Batman. In fact, I remember last year when I traveled to Indonesia when I was watching some good ol Trans TV newstation, and their cheap ass used Molossus during a news report and I shouted to everyone, "THEY'RE USING THE BATMAN THEME SONG."

It also doesn't help that I regularly work out to Molossus as well. GETS ME PUMPED UP.

no offence to Cavill, because he's solid, but the right kind of weight training can tun anyone into a physical masterpiece. Matt Bomer in Magic Mike can attest to THAT. I really do think they dropped the ball on this, because Bomer is just WAY MORE 'other worldly', stop the presses good-looking. Some may disagree, but Bomer was probs passed because he's gay. (-_-)

People always argue about their favorites in comic book movies, and its usually fruitless I think caville looks great. But differing opinions and such. Claiming he got passed over just because he was gay is quite the strong accusation too. I know a guy that still swears up and down that triple H should have been Thor.

... Shits all over the Returns cast.

Here have Matt Bomer as Supes lol Even bulking up he would not look like the Man of Steel. He would look like an even smaller version of Routh.

"Some may disagree, but Bomer was probs passed because he's gay. (-_-)"

Don't agree with that at all. Singer (who's gay) passed on him as well. He just doesn't fit, esp for this type of Superman Synder is going for.

Matt Bomer is so hot.

Is Superman supposed to be that kind of good looking, though? Handsome, yes. And I'm pretty sure Cavill is gay, too.

Did a search on Bomer in Magic Mike, and yeah he can pull off the look muscularly, but something about him seems too boyish in comparison to Cavill. Cavill's the manly man Superman deserves.

Yes, this. And Kevin Costner no thanks.

In stills Cavill looks perfect, but I'm not at all sold on his acting. His performance looks nauseatingly flat in his upcoming Bruce Willis film:

I want this to be good but I have absolutely no faith in his acting ability.

Pretty sure the True Blood guy was this guy:

Joe Manganiello (the guy who plays Alcide)

I like him but I think they got the right guy in Cavill. Matt Bomer has the look but he always struck me as short. Maybe that's because I'm used to seeing him stand next to Zach Levi all the time though.
