Eh, they have consistently delivered at least one (and usually more) big single player game every year in the last five:

  • 2020: The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima
  • 2021: Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Returnal
  • 2022: Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok
  • 2023: Spider-Man 2
  • 2024: Astro-Bot
  • 2025: Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei
They did fuck up 2023 and 2024 in terms of "tentpoles" (though 2024 still has a lot of cool smaller stuff), but otherwise they have been reasonably consistent.

2020 - Demon's Souls/Miles Morales
2021- Returnal/Rift Apart
2022 - GoW:Ragnarok
2023 - Spiderman 2
2024 - Astro Bot
2025 - Yotei

Honestly, 1 to 2 AAA tentpole games a year is not that bad. They just need to supplement it with smaller stuff. If all 10 or however many studios they have release all their games at the same time, we'd be going at least 5 more years without anything from them.

2022 had Gran Turismo 7 as well.

Hermen has definitely fucked up this gen, and every day he's still around is one more day closer to the PS6 getting underway. Sony must remove him from his position ASAP.

I dunno, man. That list kind of crystalizes how dull Sony's output has gotten. I do agree that they need to supplement it with smaller stuff that experiments with a broader range of genres and that feels a bit more focused than the "one-size-fits-all" approach that most of their 1p games have taken for the last decade.

I never like him as a Sony boss. But on the bright side , looks like he is not the decision maker anymore but more like a spokesman.

2020 had Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU2. I know they're not PS5 games, but they count.

Meanwhile, Nintendo has already published Mario Kart this year, and has Donkey Kong, Metroid Prime 4, Pokémon Legends, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors, among other games scheduled for release.

And Microsoft has a list of 12 games it will publish this year. Some of them have already come out, obviously, since we are only halfway through the year.

Just saying.

Not even Microsoft considers South of Midnight a tentpole single-player game.

I don't consider it either, but as I'm seeing some people above mentioning games like Miles Morales or Rift Apart, it seems like the term "tentpole" is pretty subjective in the end.
And a weird thing to focus on when making list wars. We just can't ignore Sony publishing more (new) games this year than Nintendo, even when giving them the TPC-published Pokémon Legends Z-A.

Remember when devs themselves only took a year to make a game? Like Vice City coming out a year after GTA3. Games were cheap too. Now I'm sad.

I'd like to see at least 3 AAA premier games every 24 months along with 2 AA games every year. Sony has enough studios to make 5 single player games every 2 years to make this happen.

For sure, I was focusing on the strictly SP ones, but GT7 absolutely counts as a big tentpole first party release as well.

For what it's worth, TPCi only publishes Pokemon in Japan, Nintendo publishes it everywhere else

Yup, even Sony agrees on that:

Yes, but that just means that TPC (not TPCi, btw.) is the main publisher of the game, while Nintendo just handles localization. A big talking point on the fandom is how everything is pretty much controlled by TPC, mostly to the detriment of the games.

Wow thanks Sony can't wait to play one game.

One? Like 1 handful or 1 like my middlefinger to this guys face!?

Sony is losing its way. If they don't course correct and start to keep politics out of games, which are for fun and escapism from real World issues for a minute, then I hope they suffer worse than the xbox brand.

Like 1 game per 12 months is supposed to be acceptable? Two AAA and one AA would be the bare minimum from them. If they can't even manage that, they ain't better than MS.

1 tentpole singleplayer game is normal though. Remember it's not just 1 singleplayer game per year. It's 1 tentpole singleplayer game and this wouldn't be too far from what happened during PS4. They have never had enough studios to be outputting several tenpole games a year, ever.
Its always been 1 or 2 tentpole from one of their studios and a few smaller games with partners. 2024 was Astrobot but you still had Stellar Blade, Rise of the ronin, UD, and Lego Horizon for example.

At this point, I root for MS to deliver more games on the PS5. GoW series, Halo Series, Fable, perfect dark, Blade and many more to come.
