Borne is good (I love the series) but it isn't as big as Bond. If Weinstein release The Whole Bloody Affair, Dinsey will undoubtably release Vol. 1 and 2.

No, not as big, but that doesn't mean that it isn't quite a significant exclusive.

Kill Bill in one disc is something I've been waiting for ever since the films came out. I haven't purchased them on DVD for this reason. I think the film in this presentation will be more attractive to most, especially as it is unrated, and is supposed to contain the Japanese cut.

thaivo, I'm not arguing the merits, just the selling power. Those aren't going to make a huge dent, and Ultimatum isn't even going to be out this year.

BluRay is slated to have its first Pixar release, plus Spider-Man movies this year. I don't know if POTC3 is coming this year. The biggest hits at the BO are headed to BluRay. I don't know about Transformers, I guess that'll be dual format.

Things loook worse, not better, looking ahead for HD-DVD. That's why I'm willing to call it. The cheaper players, heavy promotion, and strong back-catalog titles were enough to make me reserve judgement, but they've hit, and not made much difference.

The players are going to get mass market cheaper ($199 and below), strongER back catalog titles exist (LOTR, Jurassic Park, etc.) and the promotions have yet to hit full stride. You know I'm a realist about this format war, but HD DVD has NOT taken their best shot yet. I'd say this holiday season is their last stand, and "calling it" before then is premature. Not that you and crayon "calling it" will make a lick of difference, but I feel that by next January, we'll know if we're heading in a one format or dual format direction. If the current trends hold, it'll still be 2-1 in favor of Blu Ray or higher. But stranger things have happened and if it's still 60-40 or closer, HD DVD will likely not go anywhere.

Ultimatum I believe is coming out this Summer in theaters, so it would be reasonable to hope for a holiday 07 release. Not certain by any means, but the way Universal is pumping out titles, it is very likely to come out this Winter, especially considering the importance of this Winter's sales and that Universal is part of the HD-DVD committee.

I am a HUGE fan of Pixar, but I guess I'll have to buy their discs on DVD. I agree that BD has more heavy hitters this Winter. I just wanted to show that HD-DVD also has some significant releases. I think to ignore them would be wrong.

I think there's a quote from Toshiba somewhere that stated that sales for HD-DVD players saw a SEVEN FOLD increase with the promotion (i.e., 100 instant rebate). I would say that such a surge in sales would indicate that their promotions made a "difference". Now that the price is a standard $299 for the HD-A2, it is possible that it could be discounted further to $250, or less. At around $200, it would actually compete with high quality DVD only players, and at that point, why would someone buy a regular DVD player?

Again, I am not saying that HD-DVD will win this war, I am more saying that it is likely to stick around for longer than some people would lead you to believe.

I'm not buying any more dvd's (unless they are documentaries or sports dvd's). For the movies I want in HD that are Blu Ray only (PoTC, Casino Royale, Disney/Pixar), I'm going to wait. Either a standalone BR player or a Ps3 will be in my sights within a year or less. Even if I take longer than that, I'm not buying any more SD DVD's. I'm not going backwards, I'm in love with HD content.

Well, since my Toshiba purchase I haven't bought any regular DVD's, but have rented quite a few regular DVD's. So perhaps, I am much more likely to rent DVD's of movies that I previously would have bought. However, Pixar films usually look quite stunning even in SD.

Jarassic Park's been announced? I thought Spielberg stuff was not coming to HD.

And LOTR will be available in both formats.

Last, I head that big about player sales surging, but it was shortly followed by Toshiba lowering their sales expectations by 40-something percent. Doesn't sound like a huge increase to me.

Ahh... so you admit there was an increase to some measure, perhaps not huge, but an increase nonetheless. Therefore the promotions actually made a "difference." :D

First tragedy, then farce.
Ignatz, Toshiba lowered their own sales expectations.. but to be fair, dirt cheap chinese players (like the Walmart deal) are what most people are thinking will hit the 100-200 dollar range this year.

Im not saying it will make a difference or wont.. but its not Toshiba players that people think will hit rock bottom. So, Toshiba dropping forecasts doesnt necessarily conflict with those expectations..

Edit: Also, this months sucks. It needs to get to the 31st so I can get 300/Hot Fuzz/Shaun.

I was just looking at the free movie list, and it's pretty terrible for me. Only Corpse Bride and Babel were movies that I would otherwise own, and I wouldn't pay full price for either.

I'd say the same could be said of the free HD-DVD's.... although Casablanca is a great, great movie, just wish it wasn't 4:3 (yes I know all movies of that age were) :D

I picked Apollo 13 (eh), Casablanca (great!), Tomb Raider (bleh), U2: Rattle and Hum (love U2), and We Were Soldiers (meh).

I think for some reason getting them for free really devalues them in my eyes.

Idunno i own some and i dont have a hard time picking a movie from each.
This is what i would pick.
1. Pearl Harbor or the Guardian
2. Corpse Bride
3. Stir of Echoes
4. Devil's rejects since i own babel and italian job.
5. The Omen

Not bad really.

yeah, but out of those options.. how many would you pay 25 bucks for in a store?

If I could pick any 5, that would be awesome.

The HDDVD list is a bit better actually (pick one from each category)

1) Apollo 13, Seabiscut, Chronicles of Riddick
2) Casablanca, Constantine, Dukes of Hazzard
3) Four Brothers, Tomb Raider, Sky Captain
4) Rundown, Blazing Saddles, U2 (easily the worst category to choose from)
5) u571, Perfect Storm, We were soldiers (not alot better).

Categories 1 and 2 are pretty good options.. category 3 isnt terrible if you like stupid action movies. 4 and 5 to me are pretty meh.

Still, of those movies.. I would only pay for 2 of them with my own money (Riddick and Casablanca)..

I just found both lists. Both are lame, but there's more for me on the HD DVD list-- maybe because I've bought some of the Blu-Ray list already.

On second look, I actually only own one Blu-Ray from that list-- Blazing Saddles. The HD DVD list is just more to my tastes.

The Digital Bits updated their rumor mill today with this:

7/9/07

Here's some news that's likely to get you Disney animated fans excited - at least those of you who have (or are considering) moving into Blu-ray Disc. A press release issued over at the Disney Consumer Products website indicates that the studio is planning to release its first Platinum animated title on the format in 2008... Sleeping Beauty. In a section talking about the company's Disney Princess line of products, you'll find this text:

"The entertainment will continue as Sleeping Beauty is planned for re-release on DVD in 2008 and will be available on Blue Ray for the first time."

Also today, our industry sources have sent us word that Fox is quietly planning to release at least some of the Alien films on Blu-ray Disc in 2008.

As always, this information should be considered unofficial until the titles are actually announced by the studios in question. Stay tuned...

Most of the rumor mill stuff is true, so I hope this continues the trend

Does it matter? You're getting them for free.
And actually i would buy Pearl Harbor, The Guardian and Stir of Echoes, but not at 25, for whatever amazon has them for + 10% off and no tax and free shipping.
I already bought Italian Job and Babel.

And i would very much like Apollo 13 in high def, i watched it just the other day just because it was on bravo.

Neither of those lists are really my cup of tea I guess. They do have a nice mix of different types of stuff though.

Speaking of lists, hopefully nobody forgets the original Sony rebates that are due at the end of the month.

I need to remember to take care of it when I get home ._.

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
The newer Battlestar Galactica series is supposed to be winding its way to HD-DVD sometime soon, and between that, Batman Begins, The Matrix, and some other titles I'd love to own in HD, I'll likely wind up breaking down and buying the add-on drive for my 360.

I hope they just do the Quadrilogy so I do not have to double dip on the Alien movies in HD.

I hope not, because I only want the 1st 2. Who in their right mind wants to watch that clusterf*ck Alien Ressurection? I enjoyed AVP more than that.

Matrix

LeBron loves his girlfriend. There is no other woman in the world he’d rather have. The problem is, Dwyane’s not a woman.
So Im about to mail in the 5 free hd dvds and I cant for the life of me decide which shitty movie out of category 3 I should get :\

Tomb Raider or Sky Captain? ....ughhhh.

Sky Captain, easily. At least it's intended to be corny.

Good point :lol Plus I just looked up some reviews and Tomb Raiders quality is only a small step up from standard.

The October of 2008 Sleeping Beauty DVD release (it's a double dip of the two-disc SE already out) has been known about for a LONG time. It must make him feel special to put it in his rumor mill like it's a major scoop, when http://www.ultimatedisney.com/ reported on it over six months ago.

Are you really that bitter? While the DVD was reported the Blu Ray is relatively new, although not a major scoop as I posted it in here sometime last month.

I'm not bitter because I'll get the BRD (already have the two-disc SE). I just hate how Bill Hunt has transformed the Digital Bits into a BRD fansite.

....You know he was also the one that broke the Universal HD DVD release list after he sided with Blu Ray.

I got one for these same reasons and I really believe it wasn't worth it. I barely ever find an HD-DVD that I want to purchase while BDs are coming out every month that I'm into. Anyway, if you want one, I'll sell you mine at a reasonable price, is what I'm trying to say. ;-)

How much? I have a friend with a 360 who is interested.

Batman and the Matrix are Warner and so will be on bluray sooner or later (hopefully sooner)

thats why I'm still not re-buying HDDVD. Its only Universal and I can wait them out (at least for a while)

The 3rd and 4th are vastly inferior, but I like them both enough to want the complete package. The extras on 3 alone are more entertaining then the film itself. Ressurection was pretty bad, but AVP is on a whole other level of suckage.
