Games and movies are two completely different industries. You can't apply the same ideals to one with the other. They're incompatible.

Telling people that they have to either have two disc players or 1 expensive disc player that plays both formats would be suicide. No one will buy into that.

We are talking about a delivery medium, not a games system.

No actually for me its more like if I buy multiple BR players I can have them on each TV, just like my DVD players now. That way I can play my BR flics on every TV. If I buy a HD-DVD I have to pick where I want to watch flics. Not going to happen. :lol

That made absolutely no sense to me...I have a feeling i'm completely misunderstanding you, and for that I'm sorry.

Why do you have to pick where you want to watch an hd-dvd and not a blu-ray? do you own multiple blu-ray players and only one hd-dvd player or something?

OK I've bought about 20 Blu-ray discs now. If I put a Blu-Ray player where my DVD players are now, I can watch the B-R discs anywhere in my house. If I then buy a HD-DVD just to get the Universal releases, it gets attached to one TV. So I have to watch it there and only there. The way I watch flics, I need more versatility. At this point I've replaced 2 of my 5 DVD players with B-Ray players. There is no way I'm grabbing a HD-DVD.

I'd rather just wait for the Universal discs to hit Blu-Ray.

Thats exactly what I was going to say. I dont see anyone saying PS triple hurry and die (with it being in third place and all). So that 360 can get ff and MGS. Seems pretty hypocritical to me

Obviously you skip the gaming side of these and other forums if you do not see that daily

The Main Event said:
What about the people who are owning both and are playing their HD DVD movies through their 360 and BD through their PS3.

They're basically playing their discs through their game consoles.

That's reasonable to me. If I had a 360 (and I almost did) I might do that, expecting that even when when one format dies it might end up being somewhat supported by future players (the way some DVD players will play VCD).

I'm just talking about what's wight for me though. I know some people don't mind owning multiple players, but it bothers me.

Days like these... said:
Nothing really. Its just console fanboy mentality. Of couirse some people think that 2 formats are causing the slow adoption rate when in reality its the price of the plaers more than any other factor.

Says one of the biggest console fanboys in the thread.

I think he's saying he doesn't want to buy multiples of two seperate formats to support every TV in the house.

Anyone else notice a grainy picture on the Apocalypto blu-ray? Fantastic movie, though.

Only on certain scenes, ie jungle chasing. It was as if they used different cameras. The overall picture I found to be quite clear throught the film though.

They most likely did. The grain you see is intended and is usually a result of fast film or high ISO sensitivities on digital film cameras :)

The grain wasn't really that noticeable but it definitely was there. I'm watching this on a 22" monitor (at 1080p downscaled to 1680x1050). I'm sitting less than 2 ft from the screen too so that probably has something else to do with it. Really enjoyed the movie, though. The whole chase scene was brilliant.

Ultimately, does this matter? In a couple of years, there will be one dominating format. Those of us who chose the ousted format can cry about it or adopt the new format. Plus our players will be quaint, like Laserdiscs and the Beta. :D

To me all this bickering seems a tad pointless. Who cares who likes what? It all boils down to what you want. I would like to see the Matrix, Serenity, and Hot Fuzz in hi-def, but the reality is I would like to see Dawn of the Dead and Close Encounters more, so I purchased a Blu-ray player. It's pointless to get up in arms because someone else I know bought an HD-DVD player.

As others have said, they probably used various cameras because the picture quality changes throughout depending on the scene.

Most of the scenes looked really good though IMO.

What do people think of the 300 Blu-ray? I'm interested in knowing how the image quality is.

Ok.

Up-close shots still look great, but the further away things get, the more the dots of grain are covering up dots of details and it becomes just ok.

Paramount Pictures (Japan) will be releasing Top Gun on HD DVD, this October 26. Fans of Top Gun will be glad to know that the Japanese HD DVD release contains the Dolby TrueHD 6.1 (English) lossless and Dolby Digital-Plus 6.1 (English & Japanese) audio tracks. DTS-ES 6.1 (English) audio option is also provided. The disc contains English & Japanese subtitle options. It is expected to be priced at 4,935 Yen (inclusive of relevant taxes).

An audio commentary (which I suspect is the one ported over from the Special Collector's Edition DVD) could also be expected on this release, pending further confirmation.

Based on the current information that I have, it seems that the North American HD DVD/BD release of Top Gun is missing out on these features. The North American HD DVD/BD release contains 5.1-channel audio whether uncompressed, lossless or lossy - Dolby Digital (Plus) - and does not have any of the DVD special features ported over.

M'fucker, is it really possible that i'll have to buy this another time after i buy the BD on Oct. 2. Hopefully 5th time's the charm :lol .

I gave Hotuabi a complete answer, as did Krypt0nian. What are you talking about? Jesus fuck you are annoying. Likewise, you keep bringing up the console war and then complaining about it-- yet you've been banned for trolling on the console side before. You're Bizarro, I'm convinced. Everything is backwards.

Yes, you should. But make sure it's the BBC version. The Discovery Channel one apparently has a worse encode, not to mention cut footage.

First of all, you twisted what Hotarubi said.

Second, Hota, it's a bit different with watching movies because we're all used to not being able to get every game on one system. But with movies, by now it's pretty strange not to be able to buy any movie on a single format.

But it's not a bad point.

Doesn't matter who brought up consoles or whatever. Just drop it. Stick to the topic of discussing Blu-ray and HD DVD. I'd much rather people bash a format than people.

I recommend Crank. However you won't find another film like it. This truly demonstrates what HD technology is all about.

Other reliable titles, Pirates 1&2, Casino Royale and The Departed. 300 is good but the intentional film grain does not show favourably in HD. :(

The first two tiers of Blu-ray from AVS (titles in order of quality). Use this list to find which movie to get in order to demo for friends:

TIER 0 -Blu-

Completely flawless picture. No artifacts whatsoever, no matter how small. Demo Material - These show just what Blu-Ray is all about and everyone should own one to show any guests in their home. Show someone one of these films and they'll want to join the Blu side

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (PCM)
Corpse Bride

TIER 1 -GOLD-

Demo Material, but minor artifacting may be present which the untrained eye may not necessarily spot. Little if any visible compression. Sharp image that has a lot of HD-POP effects. If you are thinking about buying a movie in this tier don't hesitate. Show someone one of these films and they'll want to join the Blu side

Chicken Little (PCM)
Open Season (PCM)
TMNT
Apocalypto (PCM)
Black Snake Moan
Crank (PCM)(IME)
The Messengers
The Host
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (PCM)
The Fifth Element (PCM) (Remastered)
The Patriot
Happy Feet
Battle of The Bulge
The Wild (PCM)
The Ant Bully
A Scanner Darkly
Curse of the Golden Flower
300
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Happily N'Ever After
Black Hawk Down (BW)(PCM)
Kingdom of Heaven (MA)
Roving Mars (This documentary includes some SD 4:3 shots which resulted in lower placement. HD Quality is top of tier one, however due to SD and feedback this film is placed lower).

Complete list here:

Just to let you know though, not every shots were filmed with 1080i/p cameras, so some of them will appear soft and maybe not as sharp. But outside of that, yeah, it's one of the most impressive discs around.

Don't forget the collection of their short animations, same day also!

Argh, I can't wait for Ratatouille on BD. It's probably my favorite film of this whole year.

Pixar should let Brad Bird do everything. This guy is a genius! His storytelling is so fluid that it's scary how he manages to pace animated flicks so well.

The picture quality on 300 is incredible, they added plenty of digital grain, but it's clearly intentional (looks like the Photoshop noise filter) but it doesn't hide any detail that's not meant to be hidden, IMO.

But Corpse Bride kicks it's arse, it's the best looking HD film (on either format) by a country mile.

I don't care if you love animation or not. Fans of good movies MUST BUY this!
Is the big ass swoosh thing officially gone from Buena Vista releases now?

That very much looks like a fan-made placeholder IMO. The Beyond High-Definition thing is clearly a bad cut/feather/paste Photoshop job.

Ok, so on the subject of Pixar (my main regret in terms of Blu Ray exclusives), I didn't like Ratatouille as much as everyone else did. I also didn't care much for Incredibles. I actually enjoyed Cars more than those two, but then again, I'm a big Owen Wilson fan. So my top Pixar movies are:

1. Finding Nemo
2. Toy Story
3. A Bug's Life
4. Ratatouille
5. Incredibles

All are purchase-worthy for me except for Incredibles.
