It was a fairly cheap investment, and I'm sure I'll be buying a BluRay player when they're anywhere near economical, but for now I'm enjoying a little worthwhile content for my HD set. One thing that does annoy me is the seemingly unskippable HD-DVD propaganda bit I have to watch everytime I fire up a disc. I've already bought the damn product, I don't need to hear about how awesome it is or how badass it will sound on a sound system I can never afford.

Welcome to the club.

The previews are only on early Warner Bros titles, you won't see them on their new releases (and you can skip them ;)

Edit: Just remembered they're also on Paramount titles, and you can skip them too.

Welcome to the red team. Getting an HD DVD player add-on for the 360 was easily the best $160 I ever spent. The best way to enjoy it is to get a Netflix/BB Online account and fill up your queue with HD releases. :)

The newer releases don't have the propaganda stuff, so it's all good. What movies do you have?

Weird. I was hitting 'Menu' and the chapter forward button on my 360 remote and it just wouldn't cooperate. Probably more an issue with my remote or something.

So far only the six shown in the picture above. I should be getting The Big Lebowski from a GAFer trade soon and I may swing by Fry's later in the week for a few additions, like Hot Fuzz.

Wait, didn't you just say you liked Cars more than Ratatouille and Incredibles? So where is it on your list?

For what it's worth, I liked cars a lot. I don't get the hate, automobiles are part of American culture, and the movie is about much more than cars anyways. I know some people see this movie as something that glorifies air pollutants or whatever, but I think that point of view on this movie is kinda dumb.

Also, if those HD trailers for it and Ratatouille are anything to go by, they both should look eye scorchingly amazing on BD.

That collection is the release that has me most intrigued. I haven't caught most of these before and I don't think I want to get more than a few of the feature-length Pixar releases for my collection (Incredibles, Nemo, Monsters Inc., maybe Ratatouille once I see it) so if I don't end up with duplicates of too many of the shorts, the collection is definitely something I'd like to grab.

I've seen most of them in a youtube-equivalent quality, and even the DVD transfers of some of them weren't that great if I remember correctly. It would be nice if they would re-render some of them in higher resolution but keeping everything else the same for the BD release, and offer both the original, and 'enhanced' versions.

Fuck that swoosh, man. I haven't bought a single BV release yet because I know they'll eventually get tired of the swoosh and all their releases will be out without it. And yeah, I know, we don't watch boxart, but I also don't reward poor design choices with hard-earned dollars... there are plenty of other BRD releases to buy while I wait for their art department to make The Prestige cover look better. :)

King Kong looks fantastic, it was a good choice for pack-in imo. I just skip the entire New York beginning part and the boat trip and watch the movie from the island on. The T-rex fight looks jaw-dropping in HD.

May I also recommend Planet Earth, Matrix, the Departed, and animated flicks like Happy Feet for great HD picture quality.

Amazon Bundles Xbox 360 Elite with HD DVD add-on and Seven Discs for $599
from hi def digest

Sweetening the pot for Xbox fans who may be considering stepping up to HD DVD, Amazon has begun offering a new bundle with sales of the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite.

Priced at $599, included in the bundle is the game console itself, the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on player, and copies of both '300' and 'King Kong' on HD DVD. Add to that the HD DVD camp's ongoing "Five Discs Free" promo, and the deal represents an effective savings of more than $240.

This latest bundle from Amazon follows a similar promotion offered by the online retailer last month, shortly after Sony reduced the price of its 60GB PS3 to $499. That deal included a free PS3 remote, a copy of 'Memento' on Blu-ray, and was combined with the BDA's own "Five Free Discs" promo for over $200 in value.

At press time, there was no word on how long Amazon would be offering this Xbox 360 Elite/HD DVD bundle. (The retailer is no longer offering its earlier PS3/Blu-ray bundle.)

I honestly felt like stealing one of the DVD sleeves for that movie when I was buying it on BD. It just seemed so unfair to watch the DVD packed in that nicely designed sleeve, when BD front cover looked like it was designed with a hammer and an axe.

I've yet to watch it on HD-DVD just for how much it dissapointed me when I originally caught it. Still, I'm sure it looks amazing. I particularly want to pick up Planet Earth and a few others. A world full of new HD content, a wallet filled with...not much. :D

Don't even get me started on how retarded it is that the 'Elite' doesn't have an integrated HD-DVD drive.

I didn;t think Cars was a weak release because is was about Cars, but rather becuase it had the lamest story of any of the Pixar movies thus far. The weakest Pixar movies are the ones that are the least original, IMHO. Bug's Life is essentially a kid-friendly version of Seven Samurai, and it's also usually considered one of the weakest Pixar movies.

Yeah, I know. I understand COMPLETELY why MS wouldn't want to do that (price), but it wouldn't been perfect for me and tons of other folks, even at a Ps3-level price (which they're almost at anyway).

So some of you wanted impressions after i got my new Onkyo 705.
Just in case someone missed and asks again, im running:
Pioneer 5080
PS3
Onkyo 705
Fronts Polk R50's
Center Polk CSi5
Rears and surrounds Polk RTi4's
Sub SVS PB10 NSD <- yea this thing rocks
They are setup in this fashion, due to limitations of the room.
Speaker_71b.jpg

So far i have watched Crank, 300, The Patriot, Mission Impossible 3, The Departed, and Pirates 1 & 2.
First and foremost how Crank isnt a Tier 0 title at AVS is beyond me, in my own personal opinion it looks better than the pirates movies.
The sound was amazing as expected, and it is as far as i know the only title with uncompressed 7.1 sound. The box says 6.1, but the PS3 says 7.1 and the receiver says 7.1.
Mission Impossible 3, the bridge scene, i was smiling.

The movie that surprised me the most soundwise though was The Patriot, very very good full featured sound. If you like the movie and dont have it, pick it up on blu-ray you wont be disappointed. I double dipped, i couldnt help it, i had a gift card and it was right there next to 300, but totally understand others not wanting to double dip when i told myself i wouldnt and here i am doing it.

The pirates movies soundwise... Idunno if im biased or whatever because i had several issues with these discs. First and foremost it HDMI handshakes seriously like 10-15 times before i can even get to the damn movie(no other movie has this problem). And getting the movie to play was a FUCKING pain in the ass. They didnt load into that stupid pirate skull at the beginning and then whatever i did to get that up after selecting PCM sound, the movie for whatever reason didnt play until i fast forwarded it at which point i had to go back and rewind. >.< And what the hell is with disney making it so the fucking buttons(outside the fast forward and rewind) on the sixaxis dont control shit during the movie, seriously what the hell?

The strangest problem however was with Curse of the Black Pearl, at exactly 1 hour and 54 minutes 47 seconds for whatever reason something in the movie literally turns the Onkyo off. At first i thought this was caused by the onkyo overheated. But i was able to duplicate it 4 more times. I have posted in the 705 thread at AVS and some others are going to try and test and get back to me.
The sound was very good, but it didnt blow me away.

Up next im going to watch Casino Royale, Black Hawk Down and Tears of the Sun.

I must give props to the SVS sub, it really makes the system. This sub is just amazing. After hearing my friends little, yes little compared to the SVS monster, 10" velodyne its not even a fair contest. My friend had to set the crossover on his Denon to 80hz before he could even get respectable bass out of the thing. The PB10 however no matter if i have the crossover on, or the fronts and center set to full range produces a deep thundering bass.
Whatever hz vibrates my couch, i freaking love it.
Not to sound like an SVS salesman, but if there is a better sub in the same pricerange i have not heard it.

/end long post, sorry.

I've only bought a few DVDs since I made the high def jump. Not because they're Universal, but because they're obscure/old indy films that will be a long time in getting the high def treatment.

I still buy DVDs when it's like those extended edition ones which won't appear on HD anytime soon..

Or would the upcoming Spiderman 2 BRD have the extra few minutes of footage?

If Universal was clever they would put Bourne out only on HD-DVD 2 months before the regular DVD hit. If they were to do this before Thanksgiving they would get a pretty big amount of attention.

I'm actually surprised Sony didn't release Spiderman 3 on Blu Ray day and date with the theatrical version just to encourage BR adoption.

I know, but i cant set it up like that. Imagine the room in that picture is extended to the left by about 5 feet that turns into a hallway and then 10 or so feet starting from the left surround is a open area to my kitchen area.
I wasnt about to put speaker(s) over there so my dog and whoever else can knock them over. And i really didnt want to devise something to hang the RTi4's since they are rather large and i may or may not be moving in 6 months.

My parents theater will be hooked up in that fashion however, as they have the space and the room is designed that way.
I cant wait to hook it up for them, they are going to love it.

Any Disney/BVHE BD feels like you're buying into some kind of cult. They have the annoying swoosh thing on the front to fuck up the cover art and the text on the back goes on about enjoying the movie on this "mind-boggling format" (actual quote from the back of POTC). Sony stuff isn't as bad but is (unsurprisingly) pretty heavy on it as well. On top of the BD leaflets in the box - which also come in their standard DVD releases, incidentally - it plugs "Blu-ray Disc™" on every available surface and puts ads for the format at the beginning. By association I feel very uncomfortable about buying any BD with Tom Cruise on the box.

As if the fact that they come in gaudy bright blue boxes wasn't annoying enough.

Yea, I noticed your rear speakers are RTi4s. I got them confused with the FX variety of Polk Speakers, which are dipole, and should be placed more tat 90 degrees.

Is that point on th4e Pirates disc that cuts out particularly loud? My receiver has an audio limiter that cuts sound if it exceeds a certain level, so if I have the sound up and hit a particularly loud moment of the movie, it cuts all sound.

I dont recall, its during the last fight scenes on the ships and the treasure of cortez.
But it straight up turns the receiver into standby mode.

The 360 HD-DVD drive has flash RAM that you can store disc content on just like any other HD-DVD drive. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
