Yes people are buying blu-ray movies despite not having a player that plays them. /eyeroll.

No, as has been said many times over those numbers do not include the PS3 so you can take those bluray numbers and add a couple million more to them.
Now you can take the hd numbers and add maybe 100k and then come back and tell me how it looks.

Are you a joke character or something? PS3s too are freaking bluray players. Just because the HD-DVD fanboys keep making the dinstiction between PS3 and other players to cook the numbers for their purposes doesn't mean that in reality there's one. Why buy a 500$ bluray player when you can buy a great console and bluray player for the same price?

Yeah, I mean, a movie studios first concern is with how well the hardware is selling.

Home Media Magazine press release
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11127694&&#post11127694

the two-disc “Pirates” DVD and the two-disc, 75GB Blu-ray Disc edition come with hours of bloopers and other extras, including a detailed breakdown of the “Maelstrom” sequence, a documentary on the history of piracy and the pirate code, a look at the relationship between Keith Richards and Johnny Depp; five individual documentaries on the film’s design teams, and featurettes on the special effects used to create multiple Captain Jacks; composer Hans Zimmer, who provided the score; Chow Yun-Fat, who plays the devious Captain Sao Feng; and the legendary Pirate Lords and their costume designs, origins and personalities.

The Blu-ray Disc edition also contains an interactive exploration of the “Maelstrom” battle sequence between the Black Pearl and the Flying Dutchman, with its groundbreaking blend of live-action footage and computer-aided special effects. The BD-Java feature, developed and produced by Disney and programmed by the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory, lets viewers explore the Palmdale, Calif. hangar that housed the ships and sets, with in-feature pop-ups and icons that reveal multimedia content about how the maelstrom was created, from set construction to special effects. They can either explore the set on their own or take an hour-long tour hosted by film producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

SWEET!!!!!!

No, the one I posted is the official one. Looks like Disney made a few and they decided the swoosh thing was just getting in the way.

Cover looks much better without that swoosh crap.

I'll definitely rent this as I passed on it in the theater since I hated #2 and heard #3 wasn't any better.

I don't understand the hate for this movie :lol
The only downside to me was the Calypso storyline and the incredible growing haitian..well that and the multiple Jack thing was a bit overdone.
Other than that it was a great time.

That, and certain scenes , as the critics say, were drawn out too long. This movie didn't have to be 2:45 long.

But yah, other than those gripes, it was an overall fun movie. What was not fun was the length. Oh, and the movie took itself too seriously. The beauty of Pirates 1 was the sillyness IMO. :)

I didn't like how the kraken was just shown dead. It's an awesome movie monster. :(

Thank the HD Gods! Those swooshes sucked big balls.

Seconded.

That explains why Blu-ray is winning. ;)

I'll never, ever understand this line of thinking.

Well, it's like reading a shitty book but you may as well complete your shitty experience by finishing it.

As it stands, I'm 2/3s into the trilogy. I might as well get the third. It's like buying LOTR 1&2 but not 3 cause you don't like it. May as well complete the story line.

omg Heroes in Hi-Def is awesome. Watching it in 1080i on network tv. Damn i have to get rid of the urge to buy that hd-dvd add on....

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
It's the cheapest HD player on the market, comes with 6 movies, and integrates itself with a console you already own. Heroes with a ton of interactive extras, Bourne, PiP 300, Knocked Up, and Universal Studios. More reasons to own it than not own it, for sure.

I wish there was a comparable Blu Ray offer.

But it is still just an add on, that really just plays movies. I never bought the xbox remote to enable the dvd play back and i doubt i'll buy the hd dvd add on. If hd-dvd was integrated into the 360, i would be supporting hd-dvd.

Eh, I wish what you wrote could get me excited about the thing, but the last HD-DVD I bought for my add-on was Children of Men and I don't see myself buying any other HD-DVD titles this year :\ I don't watch TV so I don't know what Heroes is and don't care, not a Bourne fan, never saw Knocked Up or 40YV, and got 300 on Blu-ray because I only have the X360 Add-on and so I get better sound from the PS3 Blu-ray version. I need an HD-DVD to look forward to at this point :( Jurassic Park or something.

Then again I don't buy dozens of movies in the first place. I think I'll buy maybe 10-15 Blu-rays this year total.

Well, there is, you just have to happen to own another console. You need a console either way for either comparable offer. You aren't getting either HD format just by paying <$200 alone.

He already owns a 360, that's why I mentioned it. Thanks for pointing out the obvious, though.

Can you name them? It takes a very peculiar taste to have 15 titles that you are willing to purchase, but none of them happen to be on HD DVD. Not saying it's impossible, but definitely no easy task. Unless of course, you're buying the BR version of movies that will come out on both formats. Which would be understandable, but definitely puts a dent into your "no movies I want on HD DVD" argument.

Microsoft is giving you the "choice" to NOT buy it.

Sony is also giving you the choice of NOT buying Blu Ray. Oh wait.

I see. You didn't quote anyone in that post, and the one above you wasn't related, so I thought you were talking in general.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
So you think no one really knew that info you posted? That you need an Xbox 360 to use the add-on and therefore it's really not a $179 total cost?

:D

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just saying..........

oh, and this statement:

You aren't getting either HD format just by paying <$200 alone

Won't be true for much longer. Isn't even really true now if you know where to look.

Counting stuff already bought this year? OR from this point on? Either way im over 15.
Just to name a few from this point on, just ordered Wild Hogs and Fifth Element, Cars, Pirates 3, Spidy box set, Die Hard 4, Simpsons(obviously FOX needs to get off its ass), Remember the Titans, A few good men.

While I admire your effort, you don't have a choice of Universal movies like he does, and of course there may be Warner/Paramount titles that you are interested in owning. I'm just saying it's unlikely that there's nothing worth buying on HD DVD through the rest of the year if you own the format, regardless of taste.

No need to but a dick about it man.
Im not going to sit here and say theres nothing i want on HD DVD and that its all just shit.
But just like some of you hd dvd fanbois like to say all the time(several times in the last few pages as well) "theres more than enough content on MY format so i couldnt care less about the other one."
I would also buy Clerks 2 and some other movies as well.

VanMardigan

I'm not being a dick. You really DID prove my point. The user I first quoted pretty much said there's nothing he wants on HD DVD for the rest of the year. So here you go quoting me, then all of a sudden I'm a dick when I thank you for proving my point by listing HD DVD exclusives you'd buy? :lol

whew, the tension in this thread is crazy. It's like I'm stepping on land mines every time I post.

Maybe theres a reason for that?

And no offense but you came off as a dick, whether not not that was your intention.

Yeah, well, if you think you calling me a dick was appropriate in that situation, I suppose I do think there's a reason for the landmines.

Sure, so far I bought:

-PoTC1, because I thought it was a fairly solid movie, though I hate #2
-Apocalypto, wanted to see it because I heard it was good and missed it in the theater
-The Prestige, Nolan ftw
-Big Fish, Burton ftw
-Fifth Element Remaster
-300, as I said above for the TrueHD output on PS3
-NIN concert, for same reason as above
-Departed, for same reason as above
-Planet Earth, no particular reason I chose blu-ray. But they were identical so I just picked Blu-ray.
-The Fountain, HD-DVD version is slightly better with 1.5mps audio, but for I figured I couldn't take advantage of the HQ audio with the X360 add-on anyhow, so they were 1:1 for me personally and I just went with Blue-ray
-Babel, same as above.
-District B13, was $13 at Amazon, heard it was solid
-Worlds Fastest Indian, was $13 at Amazon, heard it was solid
-Paprika (JPN)
-Wings of Honneamise (JPN), HD-DVD version is probably 1:1 identical, so could've gone either way, but since a bunch of the Bandai Visual films are Blu-ray only I'd rather keep my BV anime collection together on one format.
-Final Fantasy TSW, Like the movie

What I'm planning on buying for the rest of the year on BD:

-Tekkon Kinkreet, great movie.
-Jin-Roh (JPN), amazing movie
-Cars, haven't seen it but must own all Pixar movies like I must own all Ghibli movies
-Ratatoille, loved it
-Pixar Short collection, see above
-The Shining, should be 1:1 with HD-DVD, just getting it on Blu-ray since I have a bigger Blu-ray collection at this point.
-Clockwork Orange, same
-2001, same
-Eyes Wide Shut, same
-Spiderman Boxset (hate #3, but might as well get all 3 if I'm getting 1/2)
-Blade Runner ultimate set. Should be 1:1 with HD-DVD, but will get Blu-ray for same reason as Kubricks.

Might get:

-Oldboy, haven't seen it. Heard it's good.
-Infernal Affairs. Love The Departed and hear the original is better for some people.
-Evil Dead 2, love the movie but I have a hard time believing the master is in good enough shape to benefit greatly from HD so might stick with dvd.
-Dracula, Big FFC fan and Hopkins and Oldman are awesome.

So going by that count, I'm buying 30 Blu-rays this year and maybe a few more. OTOH, I've bought 5 titles (Children of Men, Goodfellas, Casino, Casablanca, Eternal Sunshine) this year on HD-DVD and there aren't any more for the rest of the year I want. The closest was Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz, but while I like them, I don't like them enough to own. Though if I see them in an Amazon sale for cheap I'll grab them, same goes for The Queen on Blu-ray and Crank.

That cover is sick, i wonder if they are going to redo the first two for the box set? They certainly dont come close to matching :-\
I also dont understand the hate for the second or the third, its Pirates of the Carribean, what exactly are you expecting?

And having seen the third one and watching the second again, it seems as though they were more cohesive story than one would seem. Like when they go to the gypsy magician lady when she sees Orlando Bloos character she says "you have an air of desitiny about you."
