I love my wife...

I just recently got a PS3 and while she was out today, she called me and asked if I wanted Crank on Blu Ray....guess they started selling them at walmart for decent prices because she picked it up for $25

So this is my first official Blu-Ray purchase :)

Why the **** did they have to come up with this region code shit for BR?

I hate this, you can get about 10 movies in europe and they cost $35+!

I really hope this changes with the release of the PS3 next month.

Wow that's cool, thx a lot.

Don't know how reliable it is though. But I'm going to buy Stranger than fiction Region A if it's listed as region free there, then I will know. :)

So i've been watching Crank and.....

ZOMG!!!!11!!.....if you EVER need a reference disc for the medium, this is definetely one of them. There so many instances when watching this on a big screen where you really feel like your there....its insane

Only thing thats kinda unfortunate is how they had to use an another version of the film on the disc with the PiP commentary.....as opposed to just running it on top of it via HDi. Hopefully they can add this functionality in released in the future no????

Haha yeah. I have a feeling that this might look really great on Blu-ray. The movie itself is really clean and I like the "special effects" in the beginning, lest just hope that it's a great transfer. Can't wait till I get my PS3.

DigitanlBits: HD-DVD fanbois are pathetic. Universal needs to end this format war

http://www.digitalbits.com/#mytwocents

Well... as expected, I've received a flood of e-mails over the last day or so in response to my high-def format war comments of yesterday. And as expected, those who have firmly attached themselves to HD-DVD weren't terribly pleased with my arguments. The interesting thing, however, is that none of these people could logically refute my reasoning, and very few even attempted to do so. In fact, while some of the responses from HD-DVD supporters were polite and thoughtful, most were defensive, overly emotional or even downright hostile. A couple e-mails were so nasty that I can only wonder at the mental stability of their authors. All of this suggests to me that even these people are starting to suspect that the writing is on the wall for HD-DVD.

I was pleasantly surprised, however, at how many readers responded to say that they generally agreed with my assessment of the situation. And it wasn't just Blu-ray supporters who reacted positively. A surprising number of retailers and industry insiders expressed relief that we had finally said what they WANTED to say, but weren't in a position to do so. I was also struck by how many people that agreed with my comments said they hadn't yet adopted either format, instead having decided to remain neutral until a choice was more clear. But many of those folks told us that they were now close to jumping into the high-def arena, and Blu-ray was where they were headed. The responses as a whole were certainly fascinating, and they have done nothing but convince me further that this format war needs to end now, before the early adopter market gets even more fractious and divisive.

So what, or who, could end this format war? Simple: Universal. If Universal were to suddenly announce support for Blu-ray Disc in addition to HD-DVD, or if they were to adopt Warner's TotalHD combo disc, that would be the end of it. You would suddenly have every major studio in town releasing Blu-ray titles (except for DreamWorks, and our sources tell us that the studio is simply waiting for one of these formats to start selling serious numbers before getting involved). By the end of the year, cheaper second generation Blu-ray hardware will available, and that's the ballgame. That's not to say that Microsoft and Toshiba would stop pushing HD-DVD anytime soon. And I'm sure some of the HD-DVD supporting studios would continue releasing titles, at least for a while. But why would any average consumer want to buy an HD-DVD player, even a very cheap one, when you can't get Disney movies, you can't get Pixar films, you can't get the Bond films, you can't get the Spider-Man films, etc, etc, etc. Universal has the power to end this format war tomorrow. We certainly hope a lot of people, both inside the industry and film fans as a whole, are making efforts to POLITELY convince them to do so. Here's how:

Universal Studios Home Video
70 Universal City Plaza
Universal City, CA 91608
(818) 777-4400
Studio website - E-mail form on website

While we're on the subject, here's more evidence of Blu-ray's advantage: Blu-ray almost completely dominates the Japanese market now (click here for more on that), and has a clear edge in the Australian market as well (click here). In fact, one of Australia's leading consumer electronics retailers, JB Hi-Fi, has announced that they won't even carry HD-DVD in their stores (click here). Why? Because they, like many others, simply don't see how HD-DVD can overcome the overwhelming studio support behind Blu-ray Disc. JB's marketing director, Scott Browning, put his company's position this way: "We don't want to be selling $1000 clocks." Ouch. Any way you slice it, this whole format war situation is just getting silly.

By the way, for you HD-DVD fans out there who are running around online today claiming that I'm somehow getting paid to endorse Blu-ray (rather than coming to the rather obvious logical conclusion all on my own), I'll bet you this: If, in the next few months, the HD-DVD camp suddenly gets all those Blu-ray exclusive studios to start releasing titles on their format, and if all those electronics manufacturers who have released Blu-ray players start releasing HD-DVD or combo players too, I'll will happily and publicly revise my opinion. I'll even exclude Sony on both counts. But I'm betting it isn't going to happen.

Very funny development in this war.

BD is announced, massive support. BD WINNER! No HD-DVD nor BD player has yet to be released.

HD-DVD arrives X months before the first BD players, BDA has problems launching on time. HD-DVD WINNER, and 6 months has yet to pass since both formats have been out on the market.

BD surpasses HD-DVD in monthly sales.. BD winner. Although I have to admit its looking quite grim for HD-DVD this time.

Bill Hunt played an instrumental part in the defeat of the DIVX format vs DVD -- that's right folks, he went against Disney, Fox so he's not as much of a Blu-ray fanboy as you think. He was also pretty much single handedly resposible for the release of Star Wars - Phantom Menace on DVD. If not for him and his petition of hundreds of thousands of names, Lucas probably would've waited until he finished filming all the prequels.

He was also the first journalist to confirm that no studios would be switching at CES 2007. He has pull in the industry and when he says that industry insiders want this format over quick and they support Blu-ray, he has the credintials to back it up.

EDIT: I just dropping in at AVS for a second to take a look at the HD DVD forum. WOW! Take a look for yourself. The end is near and they know it.

I'd be happy to support Blu Ray if the movies released thus weren't bare bones, if the codec for all film releases were unified, the interactive menu features were established, if the PS3 had a scaler, and if there was a good stand alone player that wasn't extremely expensive. If the Companies involved with Blu Ray got their shit together in short order I'd jump on the wagon and ride it to the end.

Looking at the release list for upcoming exclusive movies on both formats things are pretty weak for the general audience until Pirates hits. Casino Royal is probably the biggest BluRay exclusive between now and then.

It's crazy how passionate people are about this. I mean, I know it sucks to buy a $500 player and then read about how it may be come obsolete, but surely it crossed the minds of those who bought EITHER Blu-ray or HD-DVD that a winner could emerge. If someone can afford an HDTV and a home theater surround system (presumably), I don't think $500 will end their lives.

I don't understand HD-DVD fans logic at AVS. They all bitch about how expensive BD players are, and yet a lot of them import many movies from UK or French sites paying premium prices. Not counting HD-DVD combos are 5-7 bucks more expensive

Just got "Chicago" in the mail yesterday, with the PS3 remote, from Amazon. Watched it last night with the girlfriend. Perfect "date" movie. She loved the film, I actually liked it a lot too, even though musicals are typically not my thing. The PQ is amazing. The sound is right up there with Black Hawk Down at the peak of perfection. We are having dinner tonight with another couple, and my girlfriend was so impressed she is insisting they come over to my place and watch the three showcase scenes before we go.

Between this experience and her recent discovery of Go! Sudoku, my girlfriend is falling for the PS3. Never thought that would happen, since when she comes into the room on Resistance Clan nights, she tends to study me like I'm from Neptune or something before retreating back to her own world.

Bill Hunt is a smart man. Movie fans should be hoping for Universal to go neutral and end this.

There are probably contracts written up and down to cover a format war and I doubt, though possible, that Universal could just switch when they feel like it. You don't just put down a deal with companies that invested multi billions of dollars to release a format.

The worst part of that whole "porn is exclusive to teh HD DVD...Blu-ray is teh DOOOMZ0RZ!" episode was that people who are supposedly smart based all these talking points and predictions of doom on nothing more than the hearsay of a pornographer at a convention.

The same journalists who will scrutinize every word of a Bill Gates or Steve Jobs presentation with great skepticism, swallowed every word of the presentation of a porn director who calls himself "Joone" -- hook, line, and sinker -- and parroted his words practically verbatim on all their news outlets.

For some reason, a leader in a legit industry with thousands of employees and hundreds of billions of dollars in FTC-checked revenue is to be viewed especially critically, yet a leader, who doesn't even use his real name, in a relatively small, highly-secretive business, based in no small part on telling naive yokels at Hollywood bus stations that they are going to become movie stars, and which has been outright lying about it's revenues for years...well, we need to TRUST this guy.

I know I've been giving the gaming press a hard time lately, but I can't help think that even Garnett Lee would take a hard second or third look at this one, even if it was written on Microsoft Games Division stationery.

I enjoy O'Reilly. I don't see what that has to do with anything here, other than as another lame liberal jab.

From Digg to TWIT to DL.tv, practically all of the old TechTV people have always been down on Blu-Ray for whatever reason - I've never understood whey everyone from that whole "cliche" tends to hate Blu-Ray and hate on Sony in general.

Yeah, I've noticed it often too. I think Leo just goes along with the group, though, and assumes HD DVD is beating out Blu-Ray due to what he hears from Kevin/Digg and early on from Patrick and Robert, when Blu-Ray was stumbling out of the gate.

I mean, just in the latest Tech Guy podcast, Leo recommend HD DVD to a caller over Blu-Ray, mentioning that HD DVD is outselling Blu-Ray. I just think he isn't aware, and nobody in that community seems too quick to bring it to his attention (or are themselves still oblivious). Leo never seems to be the kind of guy that harbors any kind of irrational hatred for a company (though he certainly has his favorites).

Bill O' Reilly does that samething ALL the time. He will talk about the "SPs" and liberals all day long. Even make a book about them, yet and still only spend 5% of his week talking bad about conseratives.

It's as if Conseratives don't do anything wrong in this guy's eyes. And don't get me started on how he views hip-hop.

I mean he will host a 5-8 minute arguement on how hip-hop is HORRIBLE for the community and how Ludacris is basically the worst thing in life, yet when somebody or people in hip-hop does something good he barely ever reports it.

He got Ludacris fired from Pepsi because he curses in his lyrics and talks about drugs. But now that Luda has a huge song on the radio about young girls running away from home due to bad conditions (like being rapped) he doesn't report on that.

Wouldn't talking to Ludacris about that song help his case with the Jessica law? Couldn't he hit 2 birds with one stone? Yes he could, but he would rather tear Luda a new one before he sides with him.

It is niche cos its soo old, no one would buy it on a new format. You either own it already or seen it a billion times.

Warner can release it if they want to, but they want to put true picture in picture, which is currently not possible on Blu-ray at the moment. This will be finalized in June. I expect Batman Begins will be released this summer, along with Troy, T3, etc...
