I can't tell the difference between this and the HD-Dvd take over watch thread now. :lol

Sony must be aggressive with the viral marketting going on here in OT.

EXTRA EXTRA!!! Read all about it! 4 Blu-ray titles are now in the top 100 on amazon. That's never happened before (HD DVD never had more than 1). The sales keep rolling on.

Wow. Four titles in the Top 100. Another milestone.

I'm actually kinda surprised now that the "Pirates" movies' preorders haven't joined those four...but I suppose the release dates for those two are way too far away. I know I don't even think about pre-ordering something that far out. (Actually, I can't even if I wanted to. I'll be moved in to a different place by the time those come out.)

Disney 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Booty to Include Two Discs, BD-Java Features

In two Blu-ray firsts for Disney, the studio will unleash their premiere two-disc and BD-Java-enhanced titles when it brings the blockbuster 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films to the format this spring.

As first announced late last month, the studio is set to debut 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' on Blu-ray on May 22, just in time for the theatrical premiere of the third film in the trilogy, 'At World's End.'

With expectations high for both releases to be a "trojan horse" for Blu-ray -- meaning the kind of huge A-list titles that will entice new consumers to finally dive into the format -- Disney appears to be pulling out all the stops to ensure fans are not disappointed.

Each title will be a "75GB" release, meaning a BD-50 dual-layer disc for the movie, and an extra BD-25 single-layer disc with additional extras.

Tech specs include the usual 1080p video transfers and uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround tracks. Extras will replicate the existing, feature-packed standard-def DVD versions.

And exclusive to the Blu-ray releases will be two BD-Java bonuses. 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' will include "Scoundrels of the Sea," an interactive in-movie feature that presents facts on-screen about the legends and lore of pirates. 'Dead Man's Chest' will include an "exciting" new Java feature called "Liar's Dice," a single-player game shot in live-action HD video.

Disney has set a $34.95 suggested list price for each of the 'Pirates' flicks.

Full specs for both titles have now been added to our Blu-ray Release Schedule

.We've also set up dedicated threads for both titles in our Forums area -- click the following links to discuss 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' Blu-ray release and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' Blu-ray release.

Wow ... didn't realize the price would be so low. They should be attainable for $30 online.

That's not bad considering it's Disney, and 2 BD disks.

Damn, I have to admit that Pirates looks sexy. With Casino Royale coming out too, damn!

I have my Children of Men and Blood Diamond at least :) I'll be able to watch Blu-Rays this summer maybe...

Dang, so they couldn't fit it all on a BD-50? Goes to show that people will find ways to use up all available space; no matter how big it is.

I hope this means they are really pushing the bit-rate for the audio and video ... and didn't merely end up a tad bit above 50GB for everything.

If you read the article correctly, this title is to showcase what Blu-ray can do. So they're using the 50gb for the movie only. The idea IS to use up all the space. That means, the absolute best video possible. All the extras are on a second disc in high definition.

I hope that's the case (and hope the audio is equally good).

I assume this is using AVC? Anyone hinted at the peak bitrates for this movie?

I did read the article, but I would have assumed that they would have enough space for the movie and extras with 50GBs; especially if they are using AVC or VC-1 (but I guess the movie is a tad long). Regardless, great news. Hope they can give Sin City the same treatment.

It might be using AVC or VC-1. I don't care either way. Disney's latest transfers have been phenominal. Audio, there's nothing to worry about. It's the 48/24 master track in PCM. There's nothing to process.

Could anyone who owns "The Prestige" check if it is region free like the other new buena vista releases (like reign of Fire, which is A/B/C iirc)? Can't find a picture of the back online. Thx a lot.

All I see on the back of the case is the letter A.

??

I haven't seen the second movie, but I thought the first was pretty damn entertaining.

Regardless, for a format to be successful ... it needs to release the big hits to the mass audience. Otherwise, the format won't live long enough for all the niche content to come out.

In this article, I like how the term "trojan horse" is used when the proper term should be "killer app." People spouting "trojan horse" this and "trojan horse" that, don't seem to have a ****ing clue what they're talking about. This "trojan horse" BS is stupid. >=|

wtf :lol Just noticed that.

This shows how incompetent half the so-called journalists are. There's been a lot of talk in the media how the PS3 is a trojan-horse for BluRay.

Obviously, half of these morons just reach into a topic's buzz-word jar when writing this shit.

Sad.

Also has anyone heard anything new about the 24 and prison break release?
YES, I need to know this. Prison Break Blu-ray is top priority for me, as great as the other releases are, nothing else comes close to this for me.

That said, awesome deal on POTC, I'll have to preorder that soon.

CES 2007: 24, Prison Break Hit Blu-ray
Fox to ship the first seasons of both hit TV shows on Blu-ray Disc in early 2007.
by IGN Staff

January 8, 2007 - According to the CES 2007 trade paper Blu-ray Today, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release both the first seasons of its hit television shows 24 and Prison Break on Blu-ray Disc "early this year."

"With DVD, Fox was one of the last and most tentative but we are not tentative at all now," said Peter Staddon, executive vice president of marketing at Fox. "We're very aggressive with catalog rollouts and complete support of new releases. There is no comparison to the first six months of DVD with the amount of product on the marketplace."

No word on exact pricing or availability yet, but these two sets are definitely big releases for the Blu-ray format. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

Disney going all out with the Blu Ray Pirates flicks. Very nice.

Consider them purchased from amazon. :)

I hope they do the same with Pixar releases, and their classic content. If anything could use super-high bitrates, it's those.

As a matter of fact, I'm hoping Sony comes up with a DeepColor solution for their newly updated AVC codec. That would be awesome for Pixar's stuff.

With the surge of POTC pre-orders, Blu-ray could soon have 6 top 100 movies. I also expect a top 10 movie for a brief moment some time this spring.

Three more movies that'll make my girlfriend happy. Good. All the action stuff is great, but sometimes you need some different entertainment.

Volver is probably my favorite Spanish-language movie of all time, (though I'm hardly an expert) because the way it blends comedy with drama is so unique. Penelope Cruz's best performance ever, IMO.

Pre-nosejob Jennifer Grey was so awesomely cute.

Haven't seen Night at the Museum yet. Can't wait.

so, top 10 average of blu-ray at amazon has broken into top 300...

Salesrank of top 10 products:
Blu-ray 293.6
HD DVD 724.8

'b' = bits, 'B' = bytes.

That I know. But I thought he might have had them mixed up, or didn't know the difference... Because I thought 6MBps seems a little low for a 1080p movie on 50GB media... is that bitrate for video and audio combined or only video?

Alright well I've got a few bluray movies and have it all hooked up over HDMI through my PS3 to my 1080p 40 inch tv..why are there black bars on the top and bottom of Superman Returns?

I've got

Superman Returns
The Marine
The Prestige
Babel
The Gridiron Gang

Which of those is supposed to have the best video? is Open Season still the best one out there in terms of video?

Many movies are shot at a wider aspect ration than 16:9
