Well, I never re-bought my VHS Disney movies so I doubt I'll do the same with Blu-ray films. However there are some favourites I must have, mainly:

-Finding Nemo
-Lion King
-Ratatouille

Others are just gravy. Wait, I hate gravy. Maple Syrup.

i rebought them all on dvd and now they are just about done. i thing `0` dalmations and pinnochio are hte only ones left. ill probably just rebuy the pixars and lion king/alladin.

i coulda made a shitload of money off of disney movies if i would have though ahead. have you seen how much sealed copies of some of the older vaulted dvds go for, about 4 times what you could get them for at retail...

Yah, it's ridiculous the prices of those vaulted films.

Fortunately, I don't have kids, so I'm not really looking out for them. :)

And yes, I forgot Aladdin. I'd probably get that as well. Robin Williams is the fucking man.

i actually started buying all the dvds because i figured id start having kids in the coming years and i wouldnt want them to miss out on any of the classics. i saw a trailer of aladdin on blu ray somewhere and it looked stunning

The last update for the built-in DVD player software in OSX added support for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. And yes, Apple is on the BRD Group; but they still added player support for both.

Interesting. Ideally I'd like a MacBook and iMac that supported both. I plan on getting new computers in a year, more likely two.

why would they get pissed off over people posting their collection?

I'm wondering the same thing. I'd post mine but I deleted my photobucket image. I'll post again when I'm home tomorrow. If i remember.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I think mana is talking about the nice BR folks that got mad when he posted his image collection when he bought an HD DVD. They were whining about bandwidth or something. :lol

We believe so and have put our support with Blu-ray at this time and that's because largely it has the better specifications. It can deliver a better picture because of the bit rate, beyond the fact that the disc has more capacity. So there's two different discs - Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Blu-ray, the dual layer, holds 50 gigabytes of data. The dual layer HD-DVD holds 30. So when you want the best picture, would you rather have 50 gigabytes of information or 30?

"So we found this meant Blu-ray had the room for the best picture and sound. The other thing it has is what we call a peak bit rate. What this is is how much data can you send over a pipe in a given second. Blu-ray can send 40Gb of information per second. HD-DVD can only do 29. So when you have an action scene and you have all this information on the screen - you've got fire, you've got people running about - you need to use so much bit rate. You have all this stuff happening and you suddenly need all this information to be sent through. Blu-ray has less limitations, so that's another benefit. It has space and it has space in the pipes.

....So we think over time Blu-ray will emerge as the single format. And we think that's best for consumers. Consumers have said that, too.

Neato. BD for me.

Oceans 11 was awesome, 12 was bland and boring, 13 was alright. Not that anyone asked...
Hopefully they'll be sold separately instead of just 13 by itself and a box set of the three... I loved the first one, and despised the two sequels.

its been shown in king kong that its the effectiveness of the codec thats used and not the bitrate that make the movie look good. king kong gets no where close to the 30's like DMC, yet it looks on par. how is it disney can use this excuse?? throw true HD on the disc instead of pcm and im sure everyone of their movies wouldve fit on a hd-dvd and looked just as good if encoded at VC-1

im not knocking disney because they are putting out wonderful BD's (prestige is my favorite hi-def movie), but that PR line is a load of bullshit.

edited for truth :) sorry klee

Dude no one got mad that you posted your collection, people got made that you posted 2 or 3 pics posting a new one after you added like one or two movies to your collection/

I have plenty of bandwidth. However get a better camera, or clean the vasoline off the lense.

And for all your HD DVD cheerleading 12 boxes is all the support you can muster? :p pfft and you call yourself a member of the red team.

2mp camera phone with bad lighting. :(

lol, how much money do I have to spend on HD movies to impress you, lil guy? I have a family, ya know :lol

btw, I only got King Kong for free. If I bought an HD DVD player now, I could get up to six movies (half my total collection) for free. I could also get five BR for buying a Ps3. Now's definitely a better time to get an HD player. I had to build my collection the old fashioned way: buying the movies.

4th time with +1 movie... not cool. Plus it wasn't even a real picture, just some database generated image.

Pssh. Get that shit outta here!

Boohoo reading comprehension.

Anyway, how come 40YO virgin has a yellow case? Is that just camera/lighting error or does it actually have that color of a case?

Your collection is smaller than I imagined too, for someone that argues so much about it :p

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
I'm up to 22 movies now with the most recent being Bourne Supremacy, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. I'll post a pic as soon as I get around to it. Nice selection you have there Van. I want to see a pic of pet's collection. I think I remember him saying his collection is nearing 100.

Judging by the size, I'd say that's the slipcover on Virgin.

this is why, I've seen it in stores.

Ocean's box set, Pirates box set, Spider-man box set...those alone will probably run me close to (if not over) $300 total. and that's not even the tip of the release iceberg for this fall!

Sadly, as pro-Blu as I am, I only own 9 releases myself (Casino Royale, The Departed, The Fountain, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Layer Cake, Purple Rain, A Scanner Darkly, Weeds Season 1 and Weeds Season 2), but I'm super-particular and have also been buying a lot more stuff on the gaming side of things recently... I'll go 20+ by the end of the year, though, with plans to pick up Planet Earth (BBC), Blade Runner (5 disc, no bonus shit), and just about any foreign film that gets released, in addition to some stuff for the wifey (Pirates trilogy, Spidey trilogy, etc).

I've got 18 titles right now (in case, y'know, you're visually impaired) but will probably be trading away a few of these -- Goodfellas and V aren't even opened yet.

don't mine me, just randomly popping in here asking questions...

so how is it that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray both came to use the same packaging for their discs? Is there a story for this that is available to read somewhere, or is it just a weird coincidence?

Not in the picture - King Kong. I rewatched it yesterday and I must say that the insects pit is one of the most disturbing scene ever. Especially in HD. *shiver*

Yeah, it's a slip cover. Pretty hilarious though.

jet, any specific reason you got 300 on BR instead of HD DVD?

edit: btw, Hot Fuzz is on the way from Amazon.com for me and I'm watching Children of Men and so far I'm very impressed. Definitely picking it up.

Main Event: Is that Imax Blue Planet any good? It doesn't seem like a lot of content for the price, but I'm a sucker for space-related shit.

Just got home this past couple of days so I didn't have time to watch it yet. Considering that it also features another documentary "A Dream is Alive", I thought it would be a good blind purchase.

I'll watch it tomorrow and let you know.

My collection hit 100 movies (and Digital Video Essentials) today when I finally got around to buying The Bourne Identity. I have 12 movies, 13 titles total on Bluray, but that number will grow significantly the next time Fry's has one of their crazy Sony Bluray sales.

Just got a new samsung tv and since I already have a ps3 and have seen Casino royale i'm really interested in getting some new Blu-ray movies. I'm not sure if it's the right thread but for you guys that have a collection or just watch some is there any movies you would recommend getting. I'm easy with any genre cartoons, comedy, horror etc Just want to test out the tv some more.
Thanks.

AlteredBeast

Fork 'em, Sparky!
you want to test out the TV, eh? Get Apocalypto. The PQ is really, really fantastic.

Which brings me to my question: What's the best place to buy HD-DVD's online? I am specifically looking for imports that are Blu-Ray exclusive in the USA due to distribution differences.

The Prestige and Apocalypto are at the top of my list.

You'll get the same responses from others but...

-Crank
-Pirates 1 or/and 2
-The Departed
-The Fifth Element rev 2
-Planet Earth

Others will suggest Corpse Bride but the ones I listed are more inline to mys taste. ;)

Crank will blow everything out of the water though. You have to see it to believe it.

You can get Apocalypto here; Xploited is a great US-based shop that stocks a lot of other HD imports (including the Prestige). Aside from that, it's sometimes easiest (and cheaper) to go right to the source: Amazon UK + Amazon France.
